That one about boats and armadas... I think it’s called Vergecast

Gary Vee is my personal favorite.

Surprised to see the word “Podcast” wasn’t patented by Apple.
Is that a fact? Are we sure Apple isn't being paid royalties from streaming providers?
The term and the technology predate Apple's explicit support for them. People bicker a bit about who did it first, but no one credits Apple with the invention or name..
Well despite what Jobs implied there, Apple apparently weren't the ones who originally came up with the term, at least according to Wikipedia.
I was there in the beginning days of podcasts and other people coined the name before Apple started embracing it. We used to have a host of programs we used to download episodes before iTunes started supporting it.
There was a rumour that Apple would trademark it around 15 years ago
Wooow that fact about Apple introducing Podcast was completely new to me! :O
The the fact the Podcast is iPod + broadcasting is even more fascinating!
They didn't. They already existed as their own thing, created outside of anything to do with Apple.. Apple simply added them to iTunes in June of 2005. In fact, the idea of calling them "podcasts" was hotly debated by content creators at the time, as they felt it made it sound like something people could only listen to on an iPod (loaded as separate files prior to iTunes), even though people were listening on all sorts of devices. But the name stuck.
I listened to my first podcast cause of Apple. It's how I got alllll of my house music before soundcloud.
@@Comedy4cast Leo Laporte kept trying to use the term Netcast I remember.
@@smersh007 Correct. In fact, you can still here the phrase "Netcasts you love, from people you trust." at the beginning of each of the shows on his TWIT network.
Jamie pull up that verge video about podcasts.
i was looking at the comments for a JRE reference
I want Podcasts to have a comment section... that would be cool.
Soundcloud has
Spice Captain true, but I feel like most people use iTunes or Spotify to consume podcasts though
you mean “RUclips or Twitter cesspool” cool?

Podcasting predated the Jobs announcement referenced in the video. Adding podcasting support to iTunes did a ton to popularize it, but there were several popular podcasting clients before iTunes.
I am really missing the time when podcast weren't all about money. No ads, no exclusivity on a platform. Just some people talking about stuff. Many podcasters even had time for their fans because there were relatively few listeners compared to today.
There are a lot of those still around, just more difficult to find. It's the same in the game and movie business, indie is great but difficult to find.
@@Baxtexx I know, I am still listening to a couple of them. For the vast majority it's just going downhill unfortunately.
@@MeisterYodarkus I fell you, I have this one RUclips guy who's discord isn't some crushed place, he replies and even talks about his videos later if someone couldn't get it, it's not same as podcast but less content people to talk to who really think of you as some audience instead of money making machine
I listen to podcasts of my favourite radio stations when I drive, sometimes also when I clean the house. I discovered podcast when I bought my first Mac, thanks to iTunes.
How can you make a video about podcasts without mentioning JRE?
The level of disrespect
Ikr I was waiting for them to mention Joe
Or Tom Green
Casuals
Who is JRE?
The beginning of the end of podcasts has begun. RIP.
For horror, there's NoSleep Podcast.
I'll grant you that Apple was early to podcasting, but some of us remember listening to Adam Curry's Daily Source Code before you could download them on itunes.
Hey man that's cool! I'm writing a research essay on podcasts, can I call you up and chat about that for a minute?
I used to see the podcast app on my Ipod touch and thought it was for old people now i binge listen one everyday
Wouldn't binge listening mean you listen to at least multiple a day 🤔
Listened to one podcast in my entire life. Prefer video.
Great episode, very interesting and informative 👍
Kudos for bringing this in at 5:04, very well scripted and edited with no fluff.
My question is why doesn't everyone has a podcast still ? There are so many voices that I would love to listen to (like Zack from JerryRigEverything, Rebecca from WatchMojo, Morgan Freeman) for hours and there are so many content creators that mostly does RUclips videos they research and gives us the information as shortly as possible. But sometimes I want the longer and deeper version of that information that's when podcast comes to rescue.
Shows laptop in video's beginning just to close it
Google Podcasts moved to a search based version of Podcasting by episode and it really is the best thing since Podcasting was released.
This video could be a podcast and would make no difference. The video literally shoes nothing helpful. Exactly why podcasts are so popular today!
Another big variable in this: it's content that can be consumed while doing other tasks, in ways that TV, print, etc. can't.
why only 1080p?
The serial music gives me goosebumps. However, stuff you should know is the best podcast.
LOL! I love that ending...
This is a very knowledgeable video. Thanks for uploading it on RUclips. I've leaned a lot about podcast from this video. :)
Great video 👍 I really was wondering about that.. Thanks!

Joe “DMT” Rogan will always be the GOAT
This video was very informative. Thank you so much.
I made a podcast in 2007 till 2014, this video inspire me to awake my podcast again. :)
Very true, i was also thinking why now this topic
This was awesome! Listen to Strange Flavors, a podcast where strangers are invited from all walks of life to talk about the experiences that make them who they are :) it’s fun and hilarious
The top Podcasts I listen too:
1. Ear Biscuits
2. Tailosive Tech Podcast
3. Mostly Nitpicking
4. Lew Later
5. Tailosive Talks Podcast
6. Bacon and Eggs: A Movie Lovers Podcast
Idk if the numbers are a ranking or not. I like all of them tho.
2020| 1 hour Podcast = 30 minutes of Ads
I started listening podcasts since I bought my iPhone XR and I like it. when I had Android never see an app like this free .
Imagine where Apple would be if Steve was still here
Sure everyone has a podcast but theirs only one experience
The JR experience 😎
Hi Ashley, when are u going to post another video...in the Making?? That's the best!!!
wait! so this video had an ad in it ?
I haven't played the video yet
I recently started listening to various podcasts after I downloaded the google podcasts app. And I thought, 'Maybe I'll tweet/DM Verge why Podcasts are trending nowadays'
5 days later, here's this video.
What podcasts do you listen to?
I really loved that shameless plug at the end HAHAHAHA
when you hear "new podcast arrived at 2014 that changed everything" and you start hearing weekly planet pod theme song.
Hodinkee radio is super awesome, never miss an episode!
I was listening to podcasts since the original Ricky Gervais show on iTunes..in 2006
Also streaming subscriptions
Why you changed the title of the video?
Excellent video.
I didn’t know that podcasting was an apple thing omg
Everything is nowadays
Why was Adam Curry the "Podfather" not mentioned
Shout to the Reply All sample
I actually love your podcast
I heard about the term podcast a while ago n seen it on the large ipad as well back in the day. But I actually started by listening to Joe Rogan. Came across clips on youtube which convinced me to listen to the whole thing. It's not scripted and the guests are often cool n it's honest like listening to friends. I even sometime chk out some really old episodes
talking about podcast, does anyone have good podcasts to suggest to me ?
i need something to listen to but i can't find anything interesting
Lydoudou Here’s a bunch of shows I like. 13 Minutes to the Moon (this one is IMO the best podcast telling a story ever made). Vergecast. Story Break. Giant Bombcast and Giant Beastcast. Slow Burn. Caliphate. Why’d You Push That Button. 99 Percent Invisible. Casefile. Ear Hustle. White Lies. Hardcore History (specifically Blueprint for Armageddon). Recode Media.
@@decdeclanlan Thank you very much!
Its basically RUclips for audio! But here RUclips could be anything (mostly Spotify ).
I do love The Verge, but I'm disappointed this didn't scratch past the surface layer, like coverage of other topics has.
So many overviews of why there are this many podcasts completely subverts the human element that drives all the banter-based shows, or even the more heavily-produced/narrative indie projects. Noone is baffled at the idea of people enjoying making music together, or posting clips online without expecting a reward, people like to create. If the vast majority of podcasts are unsponsored talkshows between friends, it's because of enjoyment, connectivity, and creating a unique space to talk about what you love.
The real story is how this is enabling diverse voices to create media that represents them and their experiences, and maybe how Spotify and others in the podcast space have the power to make it even more accessible.
What podcast is?
@@ecmhands and where they are to find?
0:30 predicted my pet peeve of modern youtube. why are everyone's mics in frame???
Podcasting is getting destroyed by advertising - once it’s been pillaged there will be a new format that hits the mainstream.
Ah, yes. Another audio format that is somehow even more decentralized and accessible. How would that even work? Also, the ads are skippable so who cares?
I paused the Vergecast to watch this video.
this is nice
I love her missing acrylic
I love the new zoom out effect for The Big Picture moment
The Rooster Teeth Podcast - the all time best !
..formerly The Drunk Tank
4:43 NOBODY I GUESS
It's ham radio. And there's something very awesome about that.
I started listening to tech podcast in early 2000s , Leo Laporte, This week in tech, Macbreak, etc . Then years later talking heads like Joe Rogan and Adam Corella (neither who I still listen to) . But it’s interesting to see podcasting go from people asking “what’s that ?!” “Who would listen to that ?!” To everyone and their grandma starting a podcast .😂
Lmao, I see the Podcast "subscribe" button is broken for everyone.
The Ricky Gervais podcast was my first and fav podcast - true crime pods are far too addictive too.
You forgot to advertise a grocery delivery service and/or a mattress/pillow

Ashley just wanted to promote her podcast.....😂
I already knew podcasts were related to iPods. It is just obvious. I would have been surprised if it was not the case.
I don't even listen to podcast but still watching this video. Lmao
Try it out. It basically replaces the kind of background noise you get from leaving your TV or radio on.
Shout out to @jrepodcast
Wow, missed a lot of info on this video. First apple didn't coined the term Ben Hammersley. Also missed some of the big players to run with it. This is a great opinion piece. People go research more.
Two Guys, One Movie podcast.
Heh.
But i dont have podcast
Obviously great quality since, you know,...it's The Verge!
You could get even better if you would provide context to all the numbers you just mentioned! "Half a Billion Dollars in Revenue...." Great! Compares to everything relevant and related here,... how exactly??? We don't know, but if it's spelled in Billions it must be a lot.... :(
I think more people know about podcast because of Adam Carolla he had the most successful podcast ever and then Joe Rogan people like him are the reason people are podcasting to the day because I Joe Rogan said. All you need is a way to record audio and send it out to the world I would say if there was no Adam Carolla or Joe Rogan doing podcast podcast wouldn't be big like they are
They should have nodded to Adam Curry, the Podfather and awesome former MTV VJ
I have a podcast too called tech popo. This is an easy way to make money.
What we need more of are True Crime podcasts. Can’t find any!!!!
Try my fav murder with kareb kilgariff and georgia hardstark or serial
If you speak German I got some recommendations 😅
finally someone with correct grammar, "link below" instead of the popular "link down below" thanks Ashley!
