- A South Philadelphia man turned to the Action News Investigative Team after he unknowingly purchased a stolen vehicle.
It turned out to be part of a sophisticated scheme called "VIN cloning," where police said thieves take a VIN from a legally owned vehicle and then transfer it to a similar stolen one.
It cost Dan Iero thousands of dollars.
Iero, who runs a peer-to-peer rental company online, said he was looking to add a larger SUV to his fleet when he came across an ad on Facebook Marketplace. #investigation #scheme #scam
A 2 year old Ford Expedition with an actual book value north of $60K, for $31K on Facebook.... Now what red flags could there be? 😛
Well, lol. Pay cash? 2021 Exp for $30k, looking at pic of the criminal? How many red flags does a person need? Lol
There is a roofer in town that only builds scams. For all his effort, he could make money easier by installing roofs.
Them damn ofays!
Their is a fool born every minute you just have to find him.
U ninjas are getting slicker and slicker . I wouldve never bought shit from that dude the second I saw him.
Yeah that ofay looks shady!
Bro could have used an OBD tool that even my grandma knows how to use. Bro could have bought the vehicle from a dealership, bro could even have brought a mechanic to inspect the vehicle. Bro wanted to make easy money by renting the car out on turo. Bro lost money. Bro likely did not learn a lesson.
This is nothing new been happening since the early 90's.
Its only going to get deeper some have showed up on car lots they are that good
It sounds so easy. About to go sell a rental car.

Why the hell didn’t he just go to a dealer if yu got 30k in cash that’s his fault live nd learn 🧏🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
How did they track it?
If they are vin swapping doesn’t take much effort more to just change the vin in the obd. Seen it done many times. It’s easier on vehicles depending what type.
The news story says its best not to pay for a USED CAR in cash. Well what kind of idiot will allow someone to take his car with a check, or money order or anything? You would be a complete fool to sell and sign your title over to someone for anything but cash. Even a certified check I wouldnt take unless I can go into the bank with you and watch you draw that certified check from a bank teller
I REALLY WISH THAT PEOPLE WOULD GET A JOB AND STOP STEALING !!
Ofays are always trying to get over!!
Then police and insurance companies wouldn't make money
This is why I buy new. Sidestep this problem.
