Keep rewatching this video through the years, it's a good video... maybe i'm not big enough yet but to be honest it's really not THAT hard, at least not most of the time or maybe in the US it's different idk, one of the most important things i have found out with this business is the saying "work smarter not harder" has never been more true, there are so many repetitive tasks in mushroom growing that if you aren't always working towards being more efficient you are going to have a hard time. Cutting a few extra seconds per bags means less hours per week, less labor cost, more competitive prices, more mental health, etc. Also prepare for the worst, have a backup of everything, like a pump, bag sealer, mixer, etc.

A farmer's life. 7 days a week, hail, dry weather, you have to be prepared for failure. Same with mushrooms. Good job.

I got a degree in biotechnology and concluded at the end that I just wasn't good enough in a lab. There were several occasions when I totally screwed up a project using the wrong pipette after a few days of insomnia. However, I did design a successful methodology to alter a bacterial chromosome using plasmids, restrictions enzymes, PCR, electrophoresis, and some other stuff (whole class had to approve and adopt it before materials were ordered; iirc we had to splice in a promoter sequence from a different plasmid to get it to work), and I saved my whole class from making a major error on a final project by staring at gene sequences, so that's kinda cool. Never got a chance to do any molecular studies or genetic experiments with any fungi besides yeast, though.

Finally, someone who's honest about business.
Currently doing my research into mushroom farming. As a former bakery business owner I understand the struggle.
I already know that despite my sound business knowledge, the transition ain't going to be easy. It's these hard facts that I need to hear.
    Thanks for the honesty.

    • @nikolaizaicev9297
      @nikolaizaicev9297 4 года назад +2

      My advice, forget about it.
Use porter's 5 forces framework for an analysis and read some basic chapters from microeconomics and industrial organization books.
After that, it will be obvious to you, that starting ANY farm business is a really bad idea, unless, you invest huge money from the start, to gain a large market share from the very beginning.
Baking business has more options than farming, it is also a hard business, but at least you can differentiate yourself a little bit, and the market power of the distributors is weaker.
Finally, I would advice you to seek some help from a business man or at least read more books, because even though you think that you have some knowledge/experience in business, it is clearly not enough for a sucess. Baking is a service industry which has higher added value than any farming business, if you have a problem making money in it, you will have even bigger problem in a primary sector, where the added value is on the lowest level!

      @@nikolaizaicev9297
Umm... Its not the business model that I wasn't sure about.
Its the specific hurdles relating to productivity, and product loss that I've been looking for.
You're right about bakeries tho. If you're willing to think outside the box, match product range to the demographics of your region, and tailor them to wholesale clients needs; you can make quite a bit of money.
Sadly due neurological damage sustained in a motor vehicle accident, I've now got partial paralysis to one side of the body.
As such I was no longer about to do the more physical side of the business, so I sold up.
Now I'm looking into business ventures that I can still be hands on with, without being so physically demanding.
      Mushrooms
      Microgreens
      Aqauponics
They all have potential for where I live.
They all have risks of their own
They'll all cost money to setup.
Once I know the risks involved, along with the regulations and zoning requirements for each of them. Then I'll skill up on the one that's most applicable and get started that way.

    • @nikolaizaicev9297
      @nikolaizaicev9297 4 года назад +1

      @@mathewpoole3589
Well, the main risk with most of them is, that you will not earn any serious money.
Unlike the bakery, you accept the price from the market /supplier.
So, if you start this business, and in a year another 100 people do the same, they will push the prices down, and you can not do anything against it.
If you have a large market share, you may negotiate for a higher payment with the buyer, but on a smaller scale, those sharks will eat all your profit.
This is one of the reasons, why most people start it as a side business first, untill they reach some degree of scale.
I would recommend you, to stick with the service industry instead.
If you still want to test all possible waters, I highly recommend to you those books :
1)Bob De Wit, Strategy (gives a nice overview about different views on competetive advantage and business competition, )
      2) Michael Porter - On Strategy and Competetive Advantage.
Those books are the minimum, if you want to increase your chances for surviving in any business.
You need to know what a Value is and how to use it to differentiate yourself. in business
And you need to know at least the 5 Force's Framework and the VRIO Framework.

    • @mathewpoole3589
      @mathewpoole3589 4 года назад

      @@nikolaizaicev9297
What you are saying is no different to what I did with the bakery.
I undercut competitors to gain new clients.
I made products that no one else in the area could make, or didn't want to make.
I made sure to provide a service that was much better than any of the local competitors.
I offered the flexibility that the big boys couldn't afford to match.
I understand competition, both current and future.
I know how to calculate profit to the gram or second.
One of the advantages that I have over others, is that I still have contacts from the bakery trade.
All of my wholesale clients use fresh produce.
They are all limited to one of 2 distributors in the region. Both of which source their goods from the same marketplace in the city.
This means that neither of them can or are willing to tailor their product range, client to client.
The cost of their produce is market up three times before the clients can get their hands on them.
      I've assessed the market potential.
      I've crunched the numbers.
Now I'm looking at hurdles, regulations and crop failure.
I've done my research on the how tos.
Now its planning and assessing time for the cost of failure rates, low yields, repairs, and crop loss.
      Counter measures and backup plans.
What you are saying isn't anything new to me.

Thank you for making these videos! Damn it's good to hear someone say that things go wrong, and that they're hard and that you'll cry. I'm a really small scale grower in Australia, and just starting out with almost no network makes you feel crazy when you fail and feel like you're messing everything up, and that just being more paranoid will make everything better. Turns out when a few of us small scale growers got together for the first time, the main thing we wanted to do was talk about how hard it is and let out some pent up anguish! I'm going to keep watching what you're up to and use that for the inspiration to keep going :)

Scads of farmers do it every year trying to get crops in during a weather break, etc. I've done it multiple times in my machine shop. Any small business that has deadlines to meet will see it from time to time. Are you concerned about chemicals leaching from your treated grow racks when spraying them? To amplify the sage advice provided here -if you have not sat down and formulated a COMPLETE PROPERLY done business plan complete with SWOT & TOWS analysis, you are not conducting a business but simply playing. There are plenty of good sites online to walk you through all of these steps - and PLEASE - make sure you do them, as you are building a roadmap for how things will go - including the anticipation of problems during inception as well as the setbacks that WILL occur along the way - and precisely HOW these will be addressed! In other words, what will happen will be narrowed due to the foresight provided by the process as well as specific steps to be taken in the event the various scenarios play out. Without this, you are wandering in the dark filled with great intentions but without a clue.

This sounds a lot like software development as a contractor for small businesses and start-ups. I've worked months or years at a time on projects that left me with nothing to show for my efforts, meeting with investors and clients and the whole shebang. In one case, one of the co-founders absconded with all the money of a company I worked on for around three years at a substantially discounted rate in exchange for equity (while in college getting my bachelor's degree). And even when I get paid fairly, sometimes I'll spend a few days investigating and solving some major underlying issue to fix a piece of critical infrastructure, and then five minutes after everything is running smoothly again a totally unrelated issue emerges that totally breaks the whole thing again (just happened today). The cycle of working half to death and recovering half back to life is fucking brutal. My longest single work session ever was 27 hours just a few weeks ago. This industry is fundamentally broken, and the solution is always to apply the smallest piece of duct tape possible to buy enough time to shower and get a few hours of sleep.

Has anybody ever though of using a mixture of rock dust powders mixtures mixed with activated carbon and moisten with enough water to make it nearly wet and spray it with clean mineral oil or liquid wax or liquid petroleum jelly and plant a mushroom at the edges of that patch to act as a catalyst starter until the entire growing bed is covered with mushrooms. It is worth a try, besides mushrooms needs a clean environment and cool to cold temperatures to multiply. Get a group of mycologists and nutritionists to gather all of the different species of edible mushrooms and all of the different edible varieties of each specie of edible mushrooms and analyze their nutritional composition and of what kind of proteins, vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients, trace elements, carbohydrates, fats, fibers and their content level and measure their proteins, vitamins, minerals, micro-nutrients, trace elements, carbohydrates, fats, fiber contents. And then try to combine them in such a way so as to provide an all mushroom breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And in between snacks-meals.

There are only really two pieces of information in this video: be a businessperson first, dont assume because you enjoy something that you will be good at doing it for a living. Having owned two and managed a total of three food industry businesses I agree with this wholeheartedly. Just because cousin Larry makes the best macaroons doesnt mean he should start a bakery. The other piece of information in the video is that shit (contamination) happens and its hard. Well, the first part of that is covered by reading the first chapter in any mushroom cultivation book: contamination is a major issue. The second part is more or less implied by the first point that you should have some business skills and be willing and able to work hard. I agree, there are not enough videos that talk about how to start growing commercially, but this video doesnt really touch on any of the nuts and bolts i.e. how to best approach restaurateurs and chefs and establish a clientele or how to appropriately price your mushrooms so as to have a competitive price but not be just giving away all your labor and investment. I do appreciate hearing someone say how hard it is to start your own business, because some folks just focus on the positives and give people the wrong idea, but how about a video talking about the above mentioned issues? Other topics could include appropriate storage and transport (should one be thinking about a commercial fridge or walk in cooler for instance), how to maintain a consistent yield so as not to leave customers hanging, how to get paid in a timely manner (this can be an issue with restaurant clients that are used to dealing with larger distribution companies that offer credit lines). Just my thoughts as a former business owner and aspiring small scale commercial cultivator.

If it werent for youtube channels like yours and Paul Stamets' book I wouldnt even be considering this undertaking! Your video is great! Thank you so much for it! I have to disagree with you about there is no other business that makes you work this hard. My husband and I have a dental laboratory and for the past 10 years, we have never had a full weekend off. We wake up at 3 in the morning and work until 10 at night except one day a week. But, you are absolutely right when you say this is happening because of lack of employees. I am glad you found people you can trust. We were not that lucky.
Good luck with everything! You are doing awesome! It is not easy being a business owner, but I wouldn't change it for anything.

Would it make sense to rent out a 2 bedroom apartment and use one of the rooms to fruit my mushrooms in? My parents won't let me grow in their basement and my girlfriend is a hoarder so I ditched my king oyster grow and I'm feeling the sadness right now pretty bad. I need to perfect my technique, but I have nowhere to do it. I can't justify renting commercial space until my technique is perfected. Any advice would help
