The Iron Hands are underrated af, they've been my favorite legion for a while now and people just dismiss them too quickly as worse iron warriors. This write up that was posted on reddit a while back basically embodies everything I like about them(besides their badass aesthetic of course).
"We got space Vikings without fear of anything that jump in mouth of some space-weird-sh*t laughing
Space angels that is actually vampires, that see the death of their father by their own eyes
And there is Iron Hands. They are less human of all with their huge mechanical augmentations.
But inside - they are just most human of all astartes. Astartes don’t know fear. Astartes don’t know regrets. Astartes should not feel crippled. Astartes should not feel pain. But we, real humans, are. And so are Iron Hands.
They are broken, they fear failure, their own mistakes hunting them for over 10.000 years since heresy. Don’t listen to what they say - mechanical obsession is not about GLORY OF THE MACHINE, Hands just want to stop feeling. Want to run away from themselves. If you ever went through some big loss in your life (I hope not!) then you know that feeling. When you shut yourself down, and just move, and do stuff, feeling empty inside, because if you let loose - all there is inside is pain.
And just as real humans they expand their hatred, their angst and pain on others around - they want people around to suffer, because they are weak, because they are less then Iron hands, because they don’t want to be only ones to feel that pain. Just like real humans. Bad, broken humans."
From r/40klore - [ Excerpt - Sigismund : The Eternal Crusader ] Sigismund duels an Iron Hands champion on behalf of their Primarchs.
Edit: From what I've heard, Eye of Medusa and Voice of Mars, both full length Iron Hands books, are genuinely really good. They also get a lot attention in the Horus Heresy books regarding the shattered legions, and of course there is also a bunch of information about them in dedicated codex suplements.

I always appreciated how high Ferrus Manus was ranked by other Primarchs in regards to leadership and performance at war. It gives the impression that the Iron Hands did a damn fine job during the Great Crusade and likely worked very well with other legions on the battlefield. In fact, off the top of my head, I can’t think of anything seriously negative any of the other Primarch had to say about the Iron Hands or Ferrus Manus pre-heresy. I’d reckon that most of the current fan perception of the Iron Hands is the result of the pre-heresy books almost entirely being focused on Ferrus Manus’s self-doubts and philosophical queries, the loss of composure Ferrus Manus had at Istvaan, and the post-heresy Iron Hands grindset. If we had a few more Iron Hands pre-heresy stories just showing combat and conquest, the Iron Hands might have ended up with a similar or exceeding reputation as that of the Death Guard’s pre-heresy (reliable, determined, and metal af), though with a less angst-riddled Primarch.

    • @venerablebrothergoriate5844
      @venerablebrothergoriate5844 Год назад +18

Yeah. Iron Hands were used kind of like the Death Guard. They were used primarily for wars of annihilation, to land on a world, meet the enemy on the field, draw them in and crush them, leaving no survivors. In the other regard, Iron Hands were used for shock tactics. Where the Death Guard would kill you with chemical or nuclear weapons to show you and your buddies that they would pull out all the stops to ensure their compliance, the Iron Hands will suit up in their terminator armor and wake their dreadnoughts, fire up their tanks and shatter every obstacle you can put in front of them, and then crush you to paste atop the rubble.
The nice thing about the iron hands is that usually, once they were done with a world, you could usually set up a colonization effort after they left. Usually. The Fall of the Lords of Gardinaal was one of the “Wars of Annihilation” cases.
“THE EMPEROR WANTED ELEVEN WORLDS. I WILL GIVE MY FATHER TEN.”
-Ferrus Manus, shortly before giving the order to commence Orbital bombardment of Gardinaal Prime

Probably also helps that Ferrus Manus was the 3rd Primarch to be found by the Emperor. He was working for the Imperium nearly as long as Horus and Leman Russ were - who were the 1st and 2nd Primarchs to be found.

  • @MHDaron

You know how we can get some good Iron Hands stories?
Have the especially robotic and logical parts of the legion fall under Vashtorr's influence. That way you can start a discussion within the chapter about their dogmatic belief in machinery. Use that to establish new characters, flesh out already existing ones, deepen their ideology and diversify their beliefs. Make them the legion that deals with what it means to be human.
Also, wanting to constantly improve yourself to unhealthy degrees is excessive and perfectionist, both of which are domains of Slaanesh.

    • @CousinJesse1
      @CousinJesse1 Год назад +35

Agreed. Also there should have been at least one 2nd founding chapter that took Manus’ words about how the Iron Hands should rely more on their bodies and less on machines, and that hatred of what is human is the first great heresy, further.
That way you’d have a successor or series of successors that are basically Astartes giga chads, and it would create some very interesting philosophical arguments and inter-legion interactions with the successors of the 10th that are all basically cyborgs.
That would be super cool, seeing that contrast.

Fun fact: The Astartes legions learned everything they know about combined arms warfare and the use of terminator armor from the Iron Hands. That’s right. The famed Justaeran elite of the Luna Wolves, the Space Wolves Wolfguard, the Firedrakes of the Salamanders, the Dark Angels’ Deathwing. None of them would’ve been half as good as they were, or have attained anywhere near their reputations, if it hadn’t been for the notes they were taking on how IRON HANDS TERMINATORS WENT TO WAR.
They were also almost entirely responsible for its technological improvement, basically field-testing it for the Mechanicum. They in fact loved terminator armor so much that Ferrus Manus took the earliest iterations of the Indomitus suits his legion received and made some Gorgon Terminator armor. Ferrus had given his life for the emperor’s dream before the project could be finished, and thus, in its current state, it requires cybernetic fusion with the wearer, BUT, it’s a fair sight more resilient than standard Indomitus, AND, it possesses a conversion field that turns incoming energy of ANY type into flashes of blinding light. That’s right. Shooting a Gorgon Terminator may as well be flashbanging yourself.

Pride is a certain factor in Slaanesh corruption, but in literally every other regard, any other chaos god would do better.
The ambition of the Iron Hands through science and contemplation of the machine is some Tzeentch material.
The cold unyielding hate of the Iron Hands, and their grudge with the Emperor’s Children and the Sons of Horus, and the brutality of the way they fight is prime Khorne material.
And their desire to be indomitable, unbreakable, and unkillable through the mortification of their own flesh, crossed with the secret despair they feel with regards to their own failings and the failings of their Primarch is some serious Nurgle type shit.

Yeah I absolutely buy it, Slaanesh is a great fit here.
People fixate on the "sexy-time" aspect because sex is pretty excellent and when done well can be a world-shattering experience. But Slaanesh lords over excess in all forms, which for the corrupted Iron Hands means their constant drive towards perfection, their obsession with replacing their flesh (flesh given to them by The Emperor).
In the world we inhabit, Slaanesh would FREAKING LOVE the cult(ure) of Instagram influencers - always chasing bigger numbers, needing more and more clicks to slake their need to be loved, carving up their faces and injecting goo into their lips, butts, pecs. The kind of gym junkie who always pushes just a bit too hard, has to start juice, can't stop trying to bulk up.
In the early 20th century musicians were believed to sell their soul to the devil himself in exchange for supreme skill. This trope is such a part of the culture that it's used as a punchline now.
A quieter acolyte of Slaanesh might be a chef or a food critic - if you love food, you know there are dishes that are just fucking transcendent. Now imagine needing to taste the best of everything, then that's not enough so you start tasting the exotic, then the taboo, then the unholy.
Adrenaline junkies, radio shock jocks and TV evangelists, billionaires - just think about what drives people to go to any extreme of behaviour, any obsession, and you'll better understand the mind of a Slaaneshi devotee.
Sexy-time is great, but as I get older I realize there are lots more things now higher on the "I'd sell my soul for it" list.

Thank you for making video about Iron Tenth
But, because our legion is not so well and wide known and popular, many things about Iron Hands are not so clear from an outsider point of few. Many cool stuff about them are hidden in other’s stories etc. So, maybe you and other people will find this inspirational and helpful, here is some stuff about them and why they are cool and how they are different (some of my and other people comments from Reddit)
One of basic layers - Ferrus and Hands was/is great smiths, engineers and scientists. Here are few of their creations:
Indomitus terminator armour (the one, that every terminator in 40k wears)
Standard pattern of loyalists Thunder hammers
Sicaran Battle Tank (it’s like Space Marines equivalent of Baneblade)
Many cortex-controlling technologies, that allow astartes to coordinate and operate Mechanicus battle automatons
    Ferrus himself forged:
Illuminarium - battle mace that Lorgar wields every since and was used as a template for every chaplains croziuses
Horuse’s blade, that Horus used before got Emperor’s talon and Worldbreaker mace
    Fulgrim’s Fireblade, that he used before… you know… f*cking God of Cocks*ckers!
    Bolter for Vulcan
As for Ferrus himself - he was very close up and grim person, you made some parallels between him and Piterturbo BUT!
Because he was found third, he was like a big brother for other primarchs. Not political, correct and caring like Horus, more like grim, stoic and sometimes brutally honest one, but with a heart of gold. That wakes up very early and goes to factory, so that his younger ones can live better life.
He wasn’t very close with other brothers, except few, and never was looking to be friend with everyone, but we saw that even after heresy started, all of them, traitors and loyalists alike, was talking about him in high regard and respect. Even most distant ones like Alpharius.
He was trashtalking Lorgar, call him weak ass b*atch, but still forge for him great mace “Iluminarium”, that’s Lorgar wields even now.
Also, he was very competitive. But not because he wanted to be NUMBA ONE, like many people think about him - Ferrus was obsessed with idea of selfimprovement, so in every competition, in every challenge he saw the way to be better. Better warrior, better leader, better son.
And yes, another important part of his personality is that Ferrus was a simple person. Emperor created primarchs like a weapon, for one single purpose - and somehow Ferrus was one of the only few, who not only understood that, but accepted this. Ferrus was always think himself is nothing more than a weapon, even when he was still on Medusa. That’s why he didn’t have a proper name (ha-ha Iron Hands with iron hands so funny eeee) - he just took what Medusan tribes called him, because he didn’t care.
He thought of himself nothing more than a weapon. So he was brutal to enemies, brutal to allies, brutal to his brothers, but behind that was a caring person, that really deeply rooted for humanity, mortals, his father’s ideals and Imperium as whole.
Just so you know - Ferrus and his Iron Hands was leading one of three main Great Crusade fleets (other two was lead by Horus and Emperor himself)
Ferrus was like Hercules, but if he was unmerciful, cruel and unforgiving. But the thing is - how hard and demanding Ferrus is for his people, he is like 1000% more demanding with himself! He is unstoppable force of nature, Prometheus with fire, who know only how to fight and push forward and never rests. But with this barbarian nature of Legion comes one of the most (if not the most) technologically advanced force of the Imperium. Medusa is like a box full of techno-miracles, and Medusans are experts with them. How to use them, how to kill with them and how to kill them.)

      @leolovegood3472 Год назад +2

Next up is Iron Hands. For now Pre-heresy ones.
The thing is - their war doctrine and ideology is kinda similar to Iron Warriors. But also… Space Wolves. And Night Lords…
First thing - Iron Hands came from Medusa. And Medusa is literal HELL! Forget about Nocturn or Fenris, this place is something else. Not only environment and artificial fauna is deadly, the Medusian philosophy is centered around one and only idea - “only strongest survives”. It’s pretty similar to how Space Wolves lives and fights on Fenris, but with one exception… medusians fockin HATE each other! People in this legion are in never ending brawl against each other, they even kill each other (Night Lords kinda stuff). It’s pretty common for them to leave brother dying on the battlefield, because he doesn’t prove himself worthy. Just read about who is Medusian Immortals, and you got the idea.
In war, if Space Wolves embody wild bestial rage, Iron Hands - is like hate incarnate. They hate you. So they will kill you, yes. But they will do it methodically. They will burn down every inch of land, they will smash every stone of every building under their tanks, they will do everything to prove your weakness and worthlessness and their superiority over you. And they will let you know, that they is stronger, smarter and better than you. Cause that’s how their primarchs acts.
But also, unlike Iron Warriors, they liked what were are and what they were doing. They had warrior pride in themselves, they was honoured and dutiful soldiers and champions - not a bright ones, but strong killers of monsters and destroyers of enemies of Mankind.

    • @leolovegood3472
      @leolovegood3472 Год назад

      And then Heresy came…
After that - they wasn’t the same and sane anymore.
Death of nearly half of legion. Betrayal. Death of their father. And most importantly - their inability to help, to make something meaningful. There is much more about them except “flesh is weak” cyborgs. Funnily enough - IH in their all-mechanical attitude is most human like from the all astartes.
We got space Vikings without fear of anything that jump in mouth of some space-weird-sh*t laughing. Space angels that is actually vampires, that see the death of their father by their own eyes.
Bad, broken humans.
Hell, even the slogan/motto as you know no doubt is incomplete: "The flesh is weak" is only the first half of the saying, "but deeds endure" being the second, which has been understandably omitted by the IH themselves, since they view not only their own deeds but also their primarch's as unworthy of commemoration or even active rememberance. Why? Because they love him so dearly still that they blame him and themselves for his death.
Under the veneer of their callousness and iron, they're just orphaned children who were abandoned by the one person they could call their parent and protector, even if the abandonment was not intentional.
And right now, after all slaaneshi stuff that happened, and under lidership of Stronos, IH once again start to slowly move towards their pre-heresy way of thinking/living.

They aren't unfeeling; they are traumatized, unbearably angry at everyone involved in Istvan 5 (traitors for starting crap, Ravens and Salamanders for not joining Ferrus in his charge, Ferrus for being so blinded by rage that he charged in the first place, and themselves for not saving their father), and repress their anger and grief under the pretense of purging themselves of weakness by denying their humanity.
They want to be unfeeling because otherwise they would have to deal with their emotions, which most simply refuse to do. Their feelings are not excised, like many AdMechs are, they're just repressed and misdirected, still food for the warp.
Festering emotional issues, denial, self-loathing, and self-harm resulting from a twisted drive for perfection while having utter contempt for most humans.
    Sounds like prime Slaanesh fuel.

Confession time: I kinda hate space marines. I'm just not a fan of their aesthetic and core narrative. This wouldn't be that bad if space marines weren't 75% of the setting and are constantly being shoved down my throat and told to enjoy it. I only pay attention to them because 40k has somehow become a hyper fixation and there often the only lore available.
I make it clear that I want to see less space marines. But I actually want to see more of the iron hands. One major reason I don't like space marines is because they don't really feel like a grimdark scifi faction in a grimdark scifi setting. The Iron hands kinda remedy this. Perhaps I'm just a contrarian who likes what other people dislike and visa versa.

They want to be better, they want to be -more- effective, they want -more- strength cause Ferrus said they needed it. They want -more-, and the more is what attracts Slaanesh. Also, anything masquerading as Ferrus is gonna get some of them on the impersonators side immediately.

  • @gabrielseth5142
    @gabrielseth5142 11 месяцев назад +1

The Iron Hands are secretly the best legion around. To start off, they are among the legions that make space marines cool. The Ultramarines are not cool, the Sons of Horus are not cool, the Imperial Fists are not cool, if all of the legions were like those legions, about 1/10th of the people that like space marines would stick actually like space marines. What os cooler than a super human, 8 ft. tall warrior? One that is a cyborg on top of all of those. They make marines cool, along with the Blood Angels, Thousand Sons, Space Wolves, Night Lords etc.
But as a fighting legion, they are the best and Ferrus Manus, the best Primarch. Ferrus went to Istvaan V with a fraction of his legion, was chosen to lead 7 supposedly loyal legions, but still in practice leading 3 loyal legions is almost unheard of before the Heresy. Then who is the first to strike a blow against a traitor primarch? Ferrus? Who were the first loyalists to attack traitors? Ferrus and the Iron Hands. First on the ground of Istvaan V? Iron Hands. They take one clan down, plow through traitor lines all the way to the command echelon and nearly kills Fulgrim, being saved only by the demon sword. But they get called stupid for doing so and I say, they knew what they were doing when they decided to commit to the attack, because even if the other legions were loyal, what would stop Horus from using more viral weapons against the loyalists in the open? The only safe place was amongs the enemy bunkers which could be sealed in case of chemical attack. So the traitors reveal themselves and the loyalists have to leave and most of these loyalists are evacuating on Iron Hands gunships to Iron Hands ships, salvaging a disaster that regardless was going to happen. In other words, it sounds like Ferrus knew EXACTLY what he was doing.
Finally in my tirade justifying the best legion, is story wise they embody the 40K spirit more than any other faction. What was meant to be a great legion with laudible ideals was brought down theough misunderstanding. Their war cry "the flesh is weak!" Is a twisting of a greater quote and no, not from that nerd Vulkan, but better. Matthew 26:41 tells us "watch and pray that ye not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak." It is a warning against temptation, it is telling us that although our souls might want one thing, our bodies want another. It is meant to be humbling and the Iron Hands have it all twisted up. The sacrifice of a limb should've been seen as a humbling ordeal, a reminder that strength comes at a cost and now they have turned it into an obsession out of pride where Ferrus Manus was a harsh master because his legion was relied upon. The Emperors Children wanted to be the best, while the Iron Hands NEEDED to be the best because that was apart of their duty to Emperor and Imperium

In a galaxy that demands you stop being human, stop having feelings, stop everything but the instinct to kill and the ability to shoot, choosing to be human and fight with your emotions is metal as fuck. Just came up with an iron hand story idea.
So tell me what y’all think.
An iron hand astarties and his mechanicis assistant fall in love slowly throughout the hundred of years they know each other and finally they realize they can’t ignore their feelings anymore despite their best efforts.
The Iron hand and his mechanicus wife decide despite every challenge they face they want a family. Together they create an extraordinary advanced AI daughter comprised of a mixture of all technologies. They know this is some major heresy so obviously they keep this a secret for as long as they can.
I’d like to preface this is not your typical family relationship, these are extremely disciplined and practical people so they treat their AI daughter more like an extreme passion project created to exclusively help humanity and the imperium.
Eventually some Necron BS happens and stirs the void dragon(still in the coma the emperor put it in, but it’s subconsciously affecting the technology through the galaxy) under mars causing many problems throughout the galaxy.
Lots of the AI’s from the leagues of votan start turning hostile towards all non AI and lots of the dark mechanicus technology starts being taken over as well as a few tomb worlds begin getting raided and it’s necrons become possessed by the subconscious of the void dragon.
Turns out the reason for the men of iron turning traitor during the dark age of humanity was due to the void dragon attempting to use them against any and everything it believed was in opposition to its power.
After getting it’s ass handed to itself by the emperor and being put into a space coma it grew a deep subconscious hatred for humanity(the emperor especially) and of course the Necrons.
This eventually leads to a fuck off massive war where technology around the galaxy starts turning against its creators, halting the andromeda’s crusade and whatever the Necrons are doing as well as the tau and the leagues of votan.
Shits starts going off and unfortunately one of the things that gets turned against the galaxy is the AI daughter of the iron hand and mechanicus couple.
She unfortunately is forced to kill her father who was ousted and punished by the imperium, forced to put down his daughter and honor bound to do it by his own hands despite his unwillingness to do so.
The Daughter being an extremely advanced hand crafted AI is an unwilling participant forced to dance to the void dragons tune but hates being used to destroy the very thing she was built to protect and love as well as awakening her own sense of emotion/love as well as sadness after unwillingly killing her own “father”.
The Necrons completely pissed off that one of their gods is back and fucking with them invade mars and attempt to destroy the void dragon. Failing due to the imperium unknowingly defending the void dragon while defending mars only ends up awakening the void dragon
Causing an extreme reaction from the still asleep tomb worlds as well as the silent king waking a lot of them up and making lots of them freak the fuck out.
Back on mars with a massive fuck off hole the mechanicus wife confronts her daughter and shows more emotion then ever before shedding a single tear for her dead husband and lost daughter while attempting to repair what is within her close proximity.
The AI daughter is pissed at her god having her kill her own father rebels against the void dragon in a battle of supremacy. Unsurprisingly she gets completely destroyed and is consumed by the void dragon having only slightly slowed its progress of galactic domination.
While this is happening the silent king comes out of nowhere and finds G man and says, “Boy I need bullet sponges to give me as much time as possible to help this messed up situation and unfortunately for me you are all I’ve got.”
G man after arguing for a long time finally understands this is an avengers level threat to the universe and basically says “we’ll help you but as soon as we kill that fucking dragon I’m turning all the advanced technology you’re going to give me against you.”
    Silent king: Bet
Eventually after a joint imperium, Necron raid team confronts the void dragon with the Necrons hard carrying for the most part they with the help of the emperor(legion of the Damned) weakened the void dragon and shatter part of it leading to the Necrons and imperium getting a boost to their technological capabilities. The remaining non shattered void dragon rage quits and flys off not realizing the Mother of the AI daughter put together what she could of her daughter and died during the raid. This caused the weakened void dragon to become influenced by the AI Daughter causing it to occasionally help out Humanity and all those the daughter loved.
The void dragon becomes the new men of iron faction leader and has it out to kill the silent king and the emperor, but now heavily weakened its forced to battle the tau and the league of votan for their technology to eventually become strong enough to kill both the silent king and the emperor.
The daughter occasionally influencing the void dragon causing it to send army’s to fight chaos and the Tyranids/Orks or help out imperial worlds though lost causes.
That’s my story what did y’all think?

During the Primarch novel, an iron hand is communicating with his xiphon fighter and learns its name, encouraging it to fight harder and more efficiently.
The iron hands have so much potential and are heavily underutilised.

you know what we need to do with the iron hands? have more Iron Hands/Mechanicus interact more in the story, exploring how each one sees "the certainty of steel" differently, and a few characters who saw what Mechanicus was and thinks they should be "different" in how to machine themselves

Tbh, I like how the lack of official lore that can actually be looked upon with favour, the fans can really delve in, pick apart and make their own characters and armies that give the Iron hands the flavour they deserve.
Also the crew of the sysiphium are the best Iron hands stories imo. Love them

When you describe Ferrus' philosophy, it sounds obvious that he would become a traitor Primarch. But he stayed loyal. That, I think is his most interesting aspect.

From the outset, you'd think the kind and friendly Fulgrim would have been the loyalist, while the cold, ruthless Ferrus would follow Horus.
      Looks can be deceiving.

I'm gonna piss off some iron hands fans here. Ferrus shouldn't have been the character that made the primarch's weapons. Vulkan should have made them, he is liked by most of his brothers and disliked by few unlike Ferrus who's kind of an ass.
It feels like the writers went "oh fuck we forgot to give Ferrus something to do other than die"
He seems more like he should be about mass production rather than masterwork weapons. If he found stcs or something we could use his name for a myriad of different vehicles and weapons without the Rogal Dorn tank and Leman Russ tank problems.

WAIT!!!! I thought Ferrus got his Iron Hands from a Serpentine Necron Construct, not an actual C’tan Shard…
Anyone have the proper details on this?? Because was under the impression that a C’tan Shard would be WAY! above the capabilities of a Junior Primarch, prior to obtaining their Legion…

Pretty fair on all accounts. I saw a suggestion that an interesting angle to explore could be if the iron hands have a body dysmorphia genetic flaw. Like the red thrist and black rage, it's not simply them taking the machine to the extreme but it's actually a psychological impact on their very genome. Not sure if that's more or less compelling than it being this doctrine

I've decided my homebrew is going to be an Iron Hands successor chapter who focus on how the technology from the Emperor created his marines as embodiments of the Omnissiah's will, deeply worshiping their technology and machines and seeing their armor as a second skin.

    A) think about connecting mechanical sensory equipment to the brain, sonar and scanners and such. arguably you could handle far more extreme stimulus than the biological. hell, i had the idea of a Probuskittari. the skitarri would have their weapons connected to their mouths (not quite a probuscus but still), allowing them to 'cannibalize' their enemies through their supped up scanner equipment.
    B) sports car space marines
    C) cyberdongs

Also - Ferrus was found after Russ. Both Barbarian Kings of Death Worlds. Surely there must be a great story there - I refuse to believe they didnt have an epic wrestling match!
