  • So today I’m working on a 2005 Chevy equinox that has a 3.4 V6 in it this is also gonna be the same information for any Saturn Vue that has the 3.4 V6 and any Pontiac torrent that has the 3.4 V6 you might want to watch the whole video because there’s quite a bit of information in here that you may or may not know changing the thermostat itself is actually very simple it’s the burp procedure that is actually complicated and or misunderstood. So if you have a 2003 Chevy equinox 2004 Chevy equinox 2005 Chevy equinox 2006 Chevy equinox 2007 Chevy equinox with the V6 engine this is the procedure for burping it and replacing the thermostat this will also work on the 2003 Saturn Vue 200 so if you have a 2003 Chevy equinox 2004 Chevy equinox 2005 Chevy equinox 2006 Chevy equinox 2007 Chevy equinox with the V6 engine this is the procedure for burping it and replacing the thermostat this will also work on the 2003 Saturn Vue or 2003 Pontiac torrent 2004 Pontiac torrent 2005 Pontiac torrent 2006 Pontiac torrent 2007 Pontiac torrent. God bless have a great day

      Depends on which year yours is where it is located but most of the time it’s on the front valve cover closest to the radiator underneath the bracket right directly into the valve cover

    Hey Clay, Thank you so much for this video. My wife took our 2005 Equinox to one of our more established auto repair shops here in Hawaii and they wanted to charge us over $300.00 to replace the thermostat and coolant. When I heard this I about hit the floor. This shop in particular appears to take advantage of people who have no idea as to what car repairs really cost. I felt something was a bit fishy when she said they needed to run "diagnostics" on something I told her to have them specifically do. (they wanted $67.00 just for that). These guys know I know what they are talking about and that I know approximately how much this type of repair should cost. Your video gave me some indication as to how difficult the repair really is and how much they should be charging. I'm not saying they shouldn't make money but they should not be in the business of gouging poor unsuspecting people out of their hard earned dollars.

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  5 лет назад +2

      Yeah $300 sounds like an awful lot I’ve been in the Auto Repair business for a number of years and I couldn’t really see charging any more than 150 for this service and I still think that’s a little bit high. But you do live in beautiful countryside.... So it’s kind of like owning a BMW or a Mercedes you may pay a little bit more where your at. God bless cheers And thank you very much for the kind words I greatly appreciate it I do think anyone could do this job it is not complicated at all

    Bought 2008 Torrent 3.4 V6 AWD. Only has 140K miles. The interior does not have a place on it, the paint job and exterior is in immaculate condition! My only problem since getting it has been overheating. Does it when having to idle to long once it reaches operating temps, and when driving it starts 3-5 mins after taking off. Replaced thermostat and bled it, but not this way. It helped for about a week. It would stay cool as long as you were driving, and if idling it would start to go up quickly, but giving it the least bit of steady gas would immediately drop it back down. The heat was staying good and hot, but suddenly it went right back to the way it was. We checked the thermostat and it was warped. The old one we replaced was not like that either. May have been from the get go. Getting ready to try it again with a new thermostat, only now using your method. Now have noticed when shut vehicle off the coolant in the tank will bubble like yours was. Not constant bubbling all around like when overheating, but for 2-3 mins there will be sporadic bubble or 2 come up like a burp of air. Hoping this fixes it, bc the vehicle is in terrific condition, and I need desperately for getting back and forth to work

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 года назад

      It should work for you because of your inconsistent bubbles when you lose heat that means that there’s an air bubble in it I would imagine if you gave it gas to heat comes back momentarily that is a sure sign of air inside the system.
      I don’t remember but it might not hurt when you’re trying to burp it out putting it up on car ramps think about it like this …..
      The air bubble is going to be trapped in the highest part of the cooling system if the highest part of the cooling system is the tank that’s where the air bubble will go so you want that tank to be higher than anything else in the system even if you have to unbolt the tank leaving the hoses hooked up make sure it’s the highest part while you’re doing the process
      These are extremely stubborn systems
      I also will say if it does have a blown head gasket which is possible even though it’s not very bad yet they are not the hardest head gaskets to change and most mechanics should be willing to put head gaskets in that for right around $1000 plus parts and from the sounds of it it sounds like it’s worth investing the money into.
      I hope that helps you out brother welcome to the channel and I appreciate Having you here wish you the best of luck

    i don't know how i missed this video it covered everything i needed to know before i changed my head gasket 2 years ago lol. if your still checking comments i have a question. why do you need so much fluid in the reservoir tank to burp the system? do you bleed all the air out with the bleeder screw you presented if we don't have the funnel lock that you used?

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 года назад

      Yes you can use the bleeder screw I just use that hopper because it was easier to demonstrate what would happen inside the system and make it easier to see for people watching the video.

    Clay, this one just doesn't make sense. My wife's car is 2006eqinox 3.4 poor heat. Seems like not putting enough flow through core or air bound. Been a mechanic for 53 year and this one doesn't make sense. Been trying everything to avoid head gaskets. Two new therms., new heater core new water pump. Backflushed twice , bled and bled air out . Heater core feed hot return gets warm but then cools off . New pressure cap on plastic tank .Don't see air bubbles and also used " no- spill " funnel kit. Anything crazy that you've seen. About to change head gaskets Thanks , Marty

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  3 года назад

      🤔🤔🤔 well it’s just an idea and I’m not certain if I’m correct.
      But maybe there is a cabin filter?
      Or maybe your heater core has a bunch of leaves around it. I can’t remember exactly how you get to the heater core but I’m sure it’s not easy but I’m assuming you could remove the blower fan and you should be able to see the heater core or at least blow out the leaves I would give that a try I don’t think head gaskets would have anything to do with the heat unless you’re having a problem with water getting in the oil etc. etc. but I could’ve swore you said that your lines were hot coming in and out if they are not hot coming in and out there’s definitely air in the system or the thermostat is stuck completely open.
      Some are just my thoughts I hope

  • @jeffkelly636
    @jeffkelly636 2 года назад +1

    Great video! I'm taking my vehicle in for a new thermostat as it only blows hot if I hit recirculate. Coolant level is normal. It doesn't look too hard to get the thermostat in and out. Hopefully they won't try to say it took 5 hours to unfastened it. 😂

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 года назад +1

      Thank you very much Jeff I appreciate the kind words.
      Your blend air door is not working correctly you may want to search underneath your hood and make sure there’s not a vacuum hose disconnected near the firewall.
      If yours is around the 2005 Chevy Equinox Pontiac torrent etc. etc. it’s quite possible it’s just a disconnected vacuum hose which may make it idle little bit weird. Or it could be an electronically controlled blend air door.
      It may be very simple and not something that you have to take it in for. If you the mechanical type if not completely understand and it shouldn’t be too expensive.
      Welcome and have a great day

      @@sharpcarco wow - thank you very much for taking the time to offer this advice. I can hear the motor when switching between recirculate on/off. I'll mention this possibility to my mechanic. My vehicle is outside due to indoor diy projects.

    • @jeffkelly636
      @jeffkelly636 2 года назад

      In case this helps anyone - in my case (no heat or window defrost unless I pressed recirculate button) the fix for my partucular issue turned out to be a heater core flush.

      Generally that’s going to be a wheel speed sensor it’s a very common problem with them Vehicles recommend the simplest way would be just to have a scan and then replace that particular wheel bearing that is defective usually the Sensors are not serviceable but wheelbearings are very simple to replace and fairly inexpensive unless they went up like everything else has

    Ok. So I bought a 2007 equinox 3 or so years ago. It got hot. Figured blew head gasket. Pulled over. It Set for couple years. Saw video...and I been trying to fix. There's no such diagram of hoses where located/plumbed etc. The guy yanked all the heater core hoses. He Ran a hose from top to bottom to bypass the heater core ugh. And then some. So I been trying to put back together. I have looked at a 2005 and a 2006 in person. But the hoses are plumbed exactly different from each other. Ugh.
    I have the bottom hose connected to the y. It goes up and around the top of the engine. The other part of y goes to the bottom of the fill tank. The top hose has a y also. But goes to a looks like a exhaust manifold and to the top hose to the refill tank.
    (Sorry so much wish I could show pictures) it's not over heating now. But the heater isn't getting very warm. It's winter. I changed the thermostat and coolant. I'm stumped and out of ideas.
    Any help would be so so appreciated. Thank Bobby

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 года назад

      I’m not quite certain on if you have the hoses ran correctly but more than likely you still have air inside the system or your heater core is defective and that’s the reason that they bypassed it.
      I’ve actually got a video on how to do the heater core in one of them where I’m doing it in a Pontiac torrent which should be the exact same procedure as your equinox.
      You could try to run some CLR through the heater core and that will help it unplug and allow your heater to work better also before you do any of the things make sure you check your cabin air filter it’s located underneath the Cowell on the passenger side of your vehicle that can cause you not to have good heat because you don’t have very good airflow into the heater box
      You can send me pictures you just have to send them through my Facebook page clase ac and Auto Repair .
      ruclips.net/video/myHtwzUoOQ8/видео.html this is the video of the heater core replacement
      And I’m being a little bit silly in this video plus I’m working on a jeep but I use a Chevy equinox as an example on how to replace your air filter and to check it out so you get a good idea of where your cabin air filter is in this video plus I kind of make a little bit of fun of Cardi B at the end which is rather hilarious if you ask me…..
      ruclips.net/video/pmN3dACheLA/видео.html
      I hope the information helps you solve your problem because at this time of year you definitely need heat
      If you’re uncertain of where the hose is go make sure you go out to a junkyard where you pick your own parts and look at a Chevy equinox or Pontiac torrent with the 3.4 in it
      And you should be able to see the routing rather easily more than likely you’ve got it correct though from the sounds of it

    Great video, if your able to answer or see this question pls help, I have a 2013 equinox the raidator fans will not shut off even after the car has been shutdown, I have changed the relays and ect sensor, and cleared the codes as of recently the check engine light popped on the codes reads the thermostat and the ect sensor I just replaced are the problem, until I can figure it out I'm removing relays everytime I shut car off because if I don't the battery is drained within minutes

    • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  2 года назад +1

      Well if your battery dies within a couple of minutes it’s very possible that it is your battery that is defective because when the car is shut off it doesn’t have enough voltage to actuate the relay and turn the relay off so not having a good battery can definitely cause this problem. It should last more than a couple of minutes. Maybe like an hour or two so that’s one possibility
      The other possibility is that the relay is bad so obviously you could switch relays around and see if it still occurs.
      Then another cause which is nothing to check the ground could be bad for that circuit.

      You’re welcome Kendra you should always burp it out but it’s not always 100% necessary. No you probably are just low on coolant you could either possibly have a coolant leak or it just never got filled to the proper level. • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  5 лет назад +1

      Hi David good evening unfortunately I had the same exact situation with mine while doing this procedure. It ended up being a bad head gasket. Lots of mechanics nowadays know how to do these head gaskets very quickly I had this one done in about six hours. Other than the pushrods going back in the identical place that they came from it is almost a fool proof job.
      So doing the head gaskets on them is relatively simple most the time if the vehicle is running really well you don’t need machining done to the heads. But is never a bad idea to have the machine shop check out the head While the engine is disassembled.

Both times the Machanic’s did pressure test and said no leaks and burped the system for air. • @sharpcarco
      @sharpcarco  3 года назад +1

      Well it could be the thermostat sticking shot if you follow my instructions in the video you would know for sure but the best way to test it for a bad head gasket is what’s called a “gas test” it will tell you 100% without a doubt if you have a bad head gasket.
      It’s extremely common for these head gaskets to go bad but not very expensive to actually fix……. They are relatively simple in my eyes but I think a lot of things are simple that other people make a big deal out of………. To repair a head gasket on a 3.4 parts and labor (without machine shop time if necessary but often not necessary) $1200 US parts and labor.
      Most often the number one cylinder starts to leak on the head gasket because the alternator sits right on top of that side of the cylinder head and I think helps trap gases in there so when I pull the head gaskets off I almost always see that the number one is bad.
      I think the 3.4 is a very decent engine with very few problems years ago they had problems with Intakes leaking on them that wasn’t a big deal as far as I was concerned but shops made a big deal out of it because they wanted to charge lots of money to fix it. No just about every single mechanic working underneath the tree in his front yard has probably done intakes on one of these and would agree that are relatively simple for the most part. But a decade ago shops needed to make money so they made it like it was a big deal…..
      I hope that information helps you and you get it figured out
