I agree with what she did, and I agree with what you say, but what defines “oppression” to different people, I understand there is a fixed dictionary definition, but many people have done horrible things in the face of “oppression”
Penguin Pop Slavery is one of the most obvious forms of oppression. Basically the only thing I can think of that is worse than American slavery would be full out genocide.

I thought it very interesting that the narrator used the terms "enslaved people" and "enslaved human beings" instead of "slaves". I think it brought out the humanity of those who were enslaved more. And I'm sure it had lots of other deeper linguistic implications. Props.
you are aware they were still people they were considerd this way to everyone but the american nation.
Karl Saying “enslaved” describes that the men and women were humans first, and it was something done TO them. While “slaves” can sound dehumanizing. How you use words and the order in which you put them are important.

And the thing is she also had sleeping spells. She did all of what she did despite her trauma and sleeping spells. She as a heavily traumatized and disabled person did more than 99% of fully able-bodied people.
She's one of the most inspiring people the world as ever seen.

Harriet Tubman has been one of my heroes since I wrote a report on her in third grade...decades ago. I am SO upset that they may cancel putting her on the $20.

It was not cancelled, but the Trump adm delayed it, it was supposed to come out in 2020 in the 100th anniversary of the amendment that gave voting rights to women, but Trump called it "pure political correctness" and pushed it back to 2028. However, the Biden adm has made public their intention of releasing the new 20 dollar note as soon as possible.

Slavery is still prominent is several parts of India. Latest repots from Madurai, tamilnadu over bonded Labour.
Slavery still exists around the world, including developed countries like the UK and US.

@@deannamccrimmon7805 not everyone. Not many know of her because some schools don't teach the history of African-Americans due to guilt & shame, or whatever. Ig so there's no feuds between people of color and non-colored people. And even if a lot do know about her in the schools she's still not considered a hero to a lot of people cause all they know is she's a hero without researching how and why.

at this point, it’s expected for Ted-Ed to have such amazing animations in their videos..but this one specifically made me feel such strong emotions, especially when they showed a flower withering as Harriet approached the end of her life, before focusing on a new flower starting to bloom after her 🤧 I mean the symbolism is just perfect

She should have the same level of respect and recognition as heroes of world War 2. She freed herself from tyranny and saved even more lives and then fought her oppressors in the war and won! She is a real life super hero.
Those last words were so powerful to me. It almost made me tear up, "i go away to prepare a place for you..." I am speechless.

Trump's treasury is trying to cancel it. Trump said maybe she can go on the $2 bill (but there are no plans to redesign the $2). The treasury took her pictures off their website after Trump was elected, and now they say the redesign of the bills won't happen for at least ten years.
changing currency is a big expense, the days of throwing money away like Obama did are over. and don't worry, Trump will deal with the treasury itself soon
Obama cut the deficit whereas Trump has pushed the deficit *and* the debt to record levels. If you think Trump doesn't like throwing money away, read up on the military parade he's requested, or the useless border wall.

They even ignored the fact that Harriet said that God was speaking to her in those sleeping spells blessing her with knowledge during the escapes. I am convinced they called her Moses because folks back then recognized her as a literal prophet.

This was a nice video, a good reminder both how horrible slavery was, and how far we've come as a society in a very short space of time. I feel like Harriet contributed to this better world we find ourselves in.

Leslie B I think it has more to do with how literal people some children think. When a young child hears "Underground Railroad", they are likely to think of a subterranean railroad.
But, I didn't learn of the Underground Railroad until 3rd grade, which definitely should have been sooner.

People like Tubman were seen as the “Hysterical freaks” of their day. That’s kind of why she had to sneak around to free other human beings.
Savannah Simpson no she was one of the few people in her day who acted on pure morals. She gambled her life to enact those morals rather than simply spouting out what she thought the people would want. Moreover, she wasn’t blowing thing of proportion or grappling for a better public image.
World History With Dan I think what Savannah means, is that Harriet Tubman, to the general public was seen as a hysterical freak blowing things out of proportion. Back in the day, southerners justified slavery as something the slaves needed AND wanted. In fact, most of the revolutionaries in terms of civil rights were all seen as criminals and hysterical freaks by the people of their day. We have the benefit of hindsight to see differently.
She's one of the most inspiring people in the world ever seen.

I feel like bursting into tears when i heard her last words, how can she at the very last moment of her life still care about others so much

She had narcolepsy?! I have narcolepsy! I'm sorry if this is a little silly, but I just get so excited when one of my chronic illnesses is mentioned in media. Disability isn't well represented in media and my heart swells when someone in a piece of media has the same condition I have. Yes she was a real person and isn't the same as a fictional character with a disability. The reason I'm surprised is that they didn't have to mention her disability, but they did. I don't think I would have ever considered that such an important historical figure would have been disabled because we're taught to think of such historical figures as almost super human. Even fictional disabled characters who are depicted to have almost super human abilities aren't viewed as capable individuals. How I ever do anything that matters? I'm disabled. My best hope is to be an independent productive member of society, not someone doing anything important enough to make history. But someone before me did it, so maybe I can too. That's why I'm excited.
I know this is late, but I'm glad you can find role models that you can relate to on a personal level. And who better than Harriet? Stay strong :)

I am in awe of this woman’s courage, strength and resilience. She accomplished more in her life than most people could only hope to do in 3 lifetimes or more. Not only did she repeatedly rescue enslaved people and lead them to freedom, but she also serves her country in War. AND she had the foresight and vision to recognize that once freed, the former enslaved people would need rights (voting) and institutions (schools and hospitals) in order to have even the smallest chance of fully benefitting from said freedom. So she didn’t just stop once slavery ended. She went on to advocate for rights and for resources for the formerly enslaved. She is a full embodiment of a visionary and servant leader. One of the greatest Americans to ever have lived. May she rest in peace in heaven with the Lord. Amen.

I remember in the second grade I had some required reading and I didn't want to do it but I had too so I picked a Harriet Tubman book. I had no idea who she was so I was upset that I had to read but I got super interested and ended up loving it. I'm still learning about her and this video was wonderful. Thank you very much!
