For anyone who’s dog is bleeding all over and can’t watch minutes if introduction 1) apply pressure 2) put paw in a bowl of flour or cornstarch to stop bleeding

Summary of the 3 steps since you're probably panicking like I was:
    1. (1:06-1:56) Don't panic.
    2. (1:57-2:54)Apply firm pressure with a piece of cloth on top of the nail that's bleeding.
    3. (2:55-5:02) For 2-3 min, use flour/corn starch/vaseline/black tea bag and hold the nail into the corn starch, or take some of the substance and apply directly onto the nail.

Thank you, doc. This is very helpful. I sent my dog for a groom and it's her first time. I felt bad her toe was bleeding. I believe they put like a powder at the pet parlor for it to stop bleeding and it did. However, when we came home, she started scratching her nails and it bled a lot. I was so worried. I'm just glad my mom is here to assist me. ❤️ And thank you doc for this additional information. I learned something new. 🐾

One time my dog ripped her nail off, dog was a malamute. Needless to say there was so much blood I almost got sick. I tried a bunch of stuff cause every time her heart beat it squirted across the room ,the vein was sticking out. I tried a tourniquet but that wasn’t working. I called a friend and they said use septic powder. I didn’t have any and wound up using flour. It worked but after that I made sure I got antiseptic pet powder. This was not a regular to short nail trim this was somebody murdered in my kitchen blood. Big dog must have lost at least 1/2 pint maybe more. Vine stuck out like a large pasta noodle. Scary. Love your videos they are really helpful. Thanks. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️💪🏻🖖🏻🐾🐾🐾🐾🙋🏼‍♀️

Whoa!!! 😳 Thank you for sharing! My dogs right back leg pinky toenail was breaking off at the base and started bleeding, but nowhere as much as what you were describing. Probably because my dog is only 16 pounds?? I took him to a vet who wouldn’t touch him even with a muzzle on because he thrashes about when strangers try to touch him especially when he’s in pain. I put the muzzle on him because I know if someone else tries it will terrify him and he will throw himself all over the place. After explaining that he has seizures, she wouldn’t touch him because she stated his nail needed to be removed and therefore had to be sedated. She didn’t feel comfortable with sedating him and him possibly having a seizure. I also don’t think she was very experienced and didn’t have enough staff or confident staff to manage my dog. I don’t know what they do when they have very aggressive dogs that are far bigger than mine? Anyway, I ended up taking him to a another vet. It was extremely traumatic. We went in, I muzzled him, the technician confidently picked him up and took him with her to the back. While the doctor attempted to examine him, somehow (I assume from thrashing about) my dog tore off the nail right next to the one that I came in for. This was explained to me after she was done examining him which wasn’t very long. At this point I was to sign a consent for treatment. The list was long, the cost was between $440-$612. I ended up paying $326. Before I consented, I let the doctor know that this was a lot of money over a toenail. My friends dog, who is my dogs brother, was attacked by pitbull that was running loose, it jumped in my friends car and dragged her dog out of his crate. This poor dog had surgery, and 3 to 5 laser treatments to cause the healing process to move fast and she paid under $1000. Here I am over a toenail, being told I could pay up to $612. They really price gouge people because they know they love their animals. By the way, there is no way I would’ve been able to cut the broken & remaining nails because he will bite. It took me two hours to get his bandage off today and I had to wear gardeners leather gloves so as not to get bitten. It wasn’t even painful and he was trying to bite me. This little guy would never bite me normally, but when he’s in pain or afraid of what you’re doing to him like cutting the hair between his paw pads, he will growl first, lick, gently bite and if you hurt him he will bite you good. I had to drop my dog off at 8:40 AM because with sedation they have to keep him there all day to watch him. I picked him up at 5 PM and all four of his paws looked like someone tortured him. The vet explained that a third nail was torn off in his hind legs and somehow another two nails on the front paws are broken off!!! It really makes you wonder what the heck happened? I mean his nails were not that long. I will say it is the first time my seven year old dog has ever had such long nails because we normally have him playing on the concrete and our travertine floors with a flashlight that he loves to chase.

Just went through this like an hour ago. I clipped a nail too far and blood everywhere. My whole family freaked out. I luckily found this video and applied a gauze pad to the nail while my niece gave the dog treats while he was laid down. It wasn't easy. He's a rowdy 3 year old. Luckily, I also have super clot gel for pets. I applied it along with constant pressure until the bleeding stopped. I'm gonna take him to the vet tomorrow, just in case. I don't know how true it is but I saw a video that said trim just a very tiny bit at a time and look for a black dot inside the end of the nail, when you see the dot, STOP, that's the vein. I've always had my dogs lie on their side when I trim their nails. Seems to keep them calmer. I do a lot of tummy scratching and petting in between cutting. You have to go very slowly until they are somewhat used to having it done. You might only get one or two done at a sitting, but that's ok, eventually it will work out. What's important is that they have good memories of the procedure instead of bad. Treats and praise, very good I've found.
If you trim too often, you're most likely going to hit the vein. If you don't trim often enough, the nails will be long and you'll want to trim off too much at a time.

I started them really young and play pretend nail cutting time so they get used to it.. I would sit on the floor and get 1 dog, make him lie down between my legs or lie horizontally. I'll massage his head, scratch his ears, rub his tummy and sing I love (name of dog) repeatedly. Then I will pretend to cut his nails then massage his paws while singing. Dog loves the TLC and he knows the others are jealous. My other dogs sit and wait for their turn. It's cut, massage paws, sing. Sometimes I say Relax softly. I also make sure lighting is good, and having a LED flashlight really helps see the border. Get one with a stand or flat base so you don't have to hold it.

He hates the feeling of me pushing pressure on the foot so I'm lucky I was able to wrap the wrap around his foot,
Update 30minutes later, I unwrapped his foot, he snarled like he was about to bite me when I was trying to unwrap it, but I finally got it off, and his foot seems to be stopped bleeding. I am not seeing any more bright red leaking out. I hope it's done for good

Every time this happens I clean the wound, then I take thick kitchen paper and wrap it tightly around his paw, use a latex glove to cover it with and tape it so it doesn’t come off, so I make a little thick boot to protect it from infection so he can walk on it freely. Leave it there for a few hours and then it’s fine. :)

And our old Dentist was working on our Sons tiny mouth, when our Son was 5, & our Son bit all 8 of our Dentists fingers, & deep too!!! My Dad had to help Dr. wrap all 8 of his fingers with gauze & 🤕🤒tape, his hands was shaking, our Son bit down deep & would not release the Dentists fingers, he bit 2 fingers first, then 1 more finger, then 3 more, then the rest. 🤣each bite, the Dentist came out & showed me his fingers, my Dad was pist, the Dentist said ; he's just a little boy, & kept right on working on our Sons 🦷teeth, then at last he bit both of his Thumbs, blood all over the floor, squirting out like he sprung a leak,🤕🤯 that's the only thing our Son bit. 😳Our Son got scared from the needle 💉the Dentist🦷 used to numb his mouth... poor little Charlie Brown look a like. 🙎‍♂️

I just trimmed my dogs nail about 1.5 mm too far, and within a minute there was blood all over the floor wherever he walked his paws. It was just from one nail. I felt so bad 😞

Great video !! Dr. Andrew should have used a ketchup packet so when he clipped Tulas nail too short blood could have squirted onto the table. I always keep a jar of flour next to me when I cut my dog's nails. In an emergency situation like this can you stop the Blood by using Super Glue? PS sorry I have not commented in a long time. I have watched every video though and I gave a👍 every time😄

@ thanks for that, she used to be a star when we needed to do anything to her. Unfortunately when we took her for her 6 month puppy check the vet put a thermometer in her bottom and that was the end of an easy dog, ever since she's wary of everything. Such a shame!!!

Aloha sweet Tula and Dr. Jones. We use the grinder on my boy, but my rescue acts like she's being killed and yells bloody murder, thus making me have an asthma attack, so, she goes to the vet where she acts like a scared hermit and doesn't make a peep. I WISH I could do her nails because nail trims are expensive where I live. Keep safe Jones Family.

My only question is does the nail grow back?? I didn't clip his nail to short. I was walking my dog and once we got home i noticed his nail was bleeding and it looks really short trimmed. The way he walks he sorta drags his nails on concrete and trims his nails. What can I do to help his nail grow back?? He's 1 year and 7 months.

I have a 7 year old, 16 lb. dog who has never had overgrown nails due to our travertine floors that we have at home. We use a laser or flashlight to have him run all over for exercise but apparently this has always kept his nails short. Because of inactivity and for the first time, his nails grew longer than they should have, but not crazy long. After a very recent traumatic experience with a pinky right, back hind leg that was breaking off at the base, he ended up needing sedation just to remove the nail and ending up breaking off a total of four additional nails in the process. Even though I muzzled him, the vet after examining him stated he will not let anyone touch him. My dog has gone from two seizures per year to having about seven seizures last year. Because of this, I didn’t want to have him sedated, but had no choice. He wasn’t able to walk on his right hind leg due to the pinky toe breaking/cracking off at the base. Somehow during the examination, which was very short, he broke off another toenail the vet explained!? So I consented for the sedation, but when I came back to pick him up 7.5 hrs. later. The vet told me on top of the original problem nail he had torn off an additional four more nails exclamation!? It makes me really wonder what the hell did they do and why can’t they find a better way to handle this dog. What a traumatic experience for my dog. I can’t even imagine him having to go in for anything major.

Tula just does not want to cooperate :). If she's like my Chloe, she gets nervous with anything to do with her feet or ears. One question though. Can it get infected after? Will it be painful for them to walk, for example out in the yard where there's pebbles and stuff?
