I believe those bands were way more extreme and ahead of their time than slayer was.

When I was 16 my old man yelled something about mowing the lawn......so I mowed SLAYER into the lawn with each letter being about 20' complete with the slayer star. He stopped asking me to mow the lawn after that.
Yeah, they were pretty influential to thrash, black and death metal bands that came immediately after. Thrash was basically tightening up the Venom sound, while black was embracing the mess, and death sort of going in both directions, depending on the band.
