Woodturning: The Cracken!!

  • This piece of Ash was one of two cookies I cut from a fallen tree here in Maine. It is the adjacent piece to the cookie used as a centerpiece for the cake at my wedding this past summer. My goal was to keep this piece as natural as possible, cracks and all. No epoxy, no gap filler, other than emergency use of Starbond CA glue (link below), which seemed necessary in order to prevent the piece from disintegrating. Somehow, this piece stayed whole, but it was quite the stressor. I hope you enjoy the final result. It is rather rustic compared to my prior turnings. If you are interested in purchasing this piece, please reach out to me through my website (link below).

This is stunning. How beautiful ,I can't imagine the pleasure of creating a piece of art like this, and to think in the very old day they made wooden bowls by hand. The old bread bowls, and here you are creating new history to pass on.I am honored to be able to watch a true artist on video.Thank you .

I have an oak nut bowl that belonged to my grandparents, probably from the 1930's. My grandparents kept it full of unshelled nuts along with a nut cracker. Thank you for showing me how it would have been created, although I imagine the technology is much different today. 🧡

I have an antique wooden bowl from my great-grandmother that measures about 24" across. She would make her bread dough in it. At one point it developed a pretty significant crack, so my grandfather filled it with some kind of resin and put in a few brass staples to stabilize the crack. It looks pretty bad-ass! 😎
It's been retired from bread-making...I have it on my coffee table now, filled with glass fishnet floats.

Just a thought, have you ever considered mixing the shavings, particularly the longer shavings rather than the dust, from your woodturning in with some epoxy resin and turn the resulting block. I think you could get a most interesting work of art

    Hey David,
I guess this bowl turned out what it was “cracked” up to be. I think this was one of your largest turnings, if not the largest. While watching the video I kept thinking there was going to be a chunk of wood flying off into space. I’m glad it did not happen. In the end, the cracks added character to the turning. Good one!!!👍👍👍👍👍
