Beagles play after release from research breeding facility (4,000 beagles)

- We and several shelter and rescue partners embarked on a historic operation and removed the first of approximately 4,000 beagles at Envigo RMS LLC’s facility in Cumberland, Virginia, which bred dogs to be sold to laboratories for animal experimentation. See some of their first moments playing after being released from the facility!
The removal of these dogs occurred pursuant to a transfer plan that was submitted by the Department of Justice and Envigo RMS LLC, with the agreement of the Humane Society of the United States to assume the responsibility of coordinating placement. The transfer plan comes as a result of a lawsuit filed against Envigo by the Department of Justice in May, alleging Animal Welfare Act violations at the facility. Government inspectors found that beagles there were being killed instead of receiving veterinary treatment for easily treated conditions; nursing mother beagles were denied food; the food that they did receive contained maggots, mold and feces; and over an eight-week period, 25 beagle puppies died from cold exposure. Other dogs suffered from injuries when they were attacked by other dogs in overcrowded conditions.
“Despite the long day, the puppies perked up and immediately started bounding around their kennels and playing as soon as they settled in,” said Jessica Johnson, senior director of the Animal Rescue Team for the Humane Society of the United States. “For these resilient puppies, hopefully their ear tattoos are the only reminders of their past.”
Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, said: “This is a truly historic moment in animal protection, as 4,000 beagles are spared a life of animal testing. We are honored that the Department of Justice asked us to lead this massive operation. Our Animal Rescue Team is ready for this challenge because this is who we are-what we have trained for-we take on what otherwise seems impossible. We are grateful to our dedicated independent rescue and shelter partners, a network of organizations in communities throughout the country. These remarkable dogs now have wonderful homes and lives ahead of them, just as they deserve.”

As a Beagle owner of two I am tearing up just knowing that these beautiful, loving, trusting animals were being used for research testing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting these animals first and for your selflessness!
I know people will all want the puppies but please remember the adult dogs need love and care just as much.
I adopted a 2 year old about 5 months ago from an earlier pull from this facility. She is so sweet, but the trauma caused will take a very long time for her to overcome but each day gets better. Her tattoo is almost non visible because her ear hair has grown over it. The puppies are really the lucky ones to be rescued at such a young age. Hopefully they won’t have too much to overcome. Thank you for thinking of the older dogs. They have endured so much. Some are not as damaged, but our little girl was and I made a commitment to her that we were going to live each day to the fullest and leave her past behind her. My Hallie girl is loved!

@@julieweber2155 Thank you for your care and patience with an older traumatized dog. You are 110% correct, that the older dogs will need to learn how to be dogs. I have a sweet girl who spent the first 5 years of her life in a hoarder house with over 100 other dogs. It is harder to overcome that trauma, than a puppy that came from that. The puppy-mama and older dogs need to learn too. (I spent weeks taking her outside, so she could sit outside, in a shady corner. She seemed to enjoy the wind, birds, outside sounds, but would stay in that corner. Suddenly one day, she just decided it was time to go sniffing around....I felt like I had won the lottery.)

And, as absolutely wonderful, adorable, and perfect hound dogs are, they can be a handful in their younger years. Breed education is important for rescue dogs.
The lady carrying the first puppy out recognized what a historically important moment that was. Looking forward to hearing more about these dogs futures.

These dogs are them most loving creatures you will ever encounter.
Beagles are the sweetest, most loving doggies. Our first lived 16 years, we've missed her terribly in the years since. Recently we adopted a 3 yr old puggle from rescue in Ohio, she was an Amish puppymill breeder. She is such a loving, cherished member of our family now. Watching her learn to be a happy doggie has brought us so much joy.
Please pray the rosary and pray to Mary for animals to stop this for happening god can make anything happening. God took me to hell and I saw people getting tortured and burned. Please pray for animals to stop being abused please don't use gods name in vain by saying oh my god oh God or Jesus Christ or oh my Lord. Also please wash your hands with only water and please put toilet paper after your done wiping in trash because fish in sewers eat it and they eat soap from our hands. I couldn’t decide if I wanted to smile or cry so I did both. Being a person who values the lives of animals because of their innocence in a cruel world, this release of 4000 little floppy eared, soulful brown eyed and beautiful smiley faces truly brought me so much joy. Just to be able to foster a couple of these darlings would make me feel like I’ve helped to do some good in this world. The only problem that would happen is I wouldn’t want to let them go to their forever homes. So glad that they are now safe.

They will test which ingredients work, then they test them individually on the dogs. They stick a tube down their throats and pour it into them, or rub it in their eyes. But the problem is, it will be commercial grade, for corporate farms, so we have no idea.

My neighbors jumped the fence and we had beagle puppies. I’m a sucker for a runt. We also had one that was epileptic. They said we could take a different beagle but we wouldn’t because they would have put our beagle down. I have had one since I was a year and a half old.

Beagles are absolutely great. I have one and it bring me immeasurable happiness. Yes they can be naughty at times but their sweet personality and demeanour melts my heart every time. I talk to it every night knowing he doesn’t know what I’m saying but at least hope he can feel the love I have for him. When I see these poor beagle I’m heart broken and I hope all 4000 of them finds a good home.

This is wonderful and I'm so proud to see that the humane society has taken this on. Please donate to/volunteer with them if you're able so they can continue to keep doing great things.
The part that I struggle with is that people often say "well this is awful" and then go buy products that are animal tested. Buy cruelty/animal test free products. Money talks.
As an Animal Advocate/Activist PLEASE buy only cruelty free products & get involved by signing petitions. I was a part of this over a yr ago as well as stopping states from allowing this. Another State has said " NO more" allowed. Do NOT shop but ADOPT & teach compassion!! WE must be the voice for those that have none & work to harden laws on anyone harming one of our animal friends. This makes me very happy to know at least these will be free.
So happy for these babies. I wish I was able to adopt one.

My first dog as a kid was a beagle, Mr. Muldoon. He died doing what he loved, chasing rabbits. My heart and face will always brighten up when seeing or hearing beagles.

Dog, cat, bunny, rat, mouse-- not ONE SINGLE Animal should EVER be in a research lab. It's okay to research their behaviour & how they live, like Diane Fossey or Jane Goodall. But never anything invasive, to their home or their bodies. And never as lab pin cushions simply to hopefully benefit humans. Why should Animals die for humans that don't give a hoot about them??😠 I don't care that l have poor health and waiting for more tests on other issues, l am feeling sick and hoping l have not caused more Animals to suffer. Thank you so so so so so so much for this story and all that you do. What they endure their entire lives is so cruel and evil. I wish all the people that help facilitate this cruelty could experience the same for themselves. Fingers crossed.

Oh my, what sweet and happy little beings. I truly hope that the older dogs find, peace, love and happiness, too. It will be difficult for them to adjust, but they will. I would like to say that these Lab people should be ashamed, but if they had a conscience in the first place, they wouldn't torture these pups.
