- This exclusive video from Animal Planet reveals the heartbreaking moment searchers found the remains of missing hiker Geraldine Largay. The 66-year-old woman lost her way along the Appalachian Trial in Maine looking for a bathroom in 2013. Animal Planet was filming for a series when police made the devastating discovery two years later. The medical examiner believes she survived in the wild for about 26 days before dying from starvation. #InsideEdition
That’s sad. All the woman wanted was to use the restroom.
All hikers should carry a lighter to at least make a smoke signal.

Sadly I thought that too, :((

Imagine charging it and seeing all of the unsent messages, pictures, videos, everything she spent days staring at before it died. And then she was alone...
For that it would require a phone service plan not just wifi
As far as I know text and calls aren’t just free from WiFi otherwise no one would pay for phony service ya know :) just internet and RUclips on WiFi? I guess. But yeah I bet there’s a ton of stuff on that phone and I am not sure as a family member if I would even want to see it to be honest.

The worst part: she was just only trying to find a portable-potty :(

Not sure if it's actually that sweet tho. 2 years dead will do a lot to the body. To me at least, it'd be worse to have her family see her dead like that. Like that's gotta be more traumatizing than just dealing with the fact she's dead

I took part in the search for Geraldine Largay, she was in a very, very rugged part of Maine. We set up and did line searches, hollering her name and looking for clues. The woods were so dense you could barely see the other searchers 10 feet either side of you. We were on the Mountains with Maine Game Wardens and many many other volunteers, and it was very tough to walk out of the woods when it was dark knowing she was still out there, everyone looked defeated. And it was a good feeling knowing she was eventually found, RIP Gerry.
Is it true there was charred evidence that she did successfully start fire to signal for help? Is that area so dense that her signals couldn't be seen at a distance?
That's what i thought, did she never try to put up a signal fire?

Dying of starvation must be an insanely painful feeling. I once had not eaten of a day and the starvation was insane. Truly sad what happened
I went 5 days one time for reasons I don't care to share, but by day 4, I started thinking about trapping animals to eat one. I've never caught and prepared my own meat ever in my life, but I was willing to eat a freaking raccoon or possum if I had to.

But have you noticed, people who like outdoors, like nature and those that unfortunately died always had that naive look on their faces.
I started hiking trails as a Boy Scout, the first lesson you learn is that you never hike that far from civilization alone. The Appalachian Trail is not a place to learn that lesson.
There is also a buddy code
Gordon lin That's what I was referring to, the Buddy code. And also where was her compass and waterproof map?
Santiago Rodriguez Guillen I learned to use compass and a map when I was 14 years old, and usually on the trail I'm the only person that has a compass and map. Let alone that knows how to use them. I learned to use my chronograph, which is why I only work from the graphs, as a compass when I was 16 years old
It's one thing to love hiking it's something totally different to be prepared for hiking.
I'm 14 and I've hiked a total of 2400 miles, on the AT and the Florida trail. alone and not alone. but I new someone that new this women and was a suspect for "murdering this women" before this case was solved, he said that she had a terrible since of direction
Purified Da2 but having a terrible sense of direction would be one more reason to bring maps and a compass ....
I never go hiking but learned where the sun would be at different times , that moss usually grows at the northern side of trees - though it's not very reliable- and how to detect directions with a stick and sunlight .
If ever lost in the woods find a creek or stream and follow it down stream. Eventually you will find someone else.
This story is so sad. But like you said she could have found a creek and followed it downstream. Or just walked downhill, it’s the east coast where it’s heavily populated. Looked at where the sun was rising and setting to determine direction. No way I would wait that long for someone to find me. I’m hiking my way out no matter what.
@@muffintop420 Just incase you didnt know, the sun actually only rises in the east and sets in the west on TWO days of the year. This is why they need to put telephone towers in remote areas so she could’ve contacted the police and would’ve been rescued
I'm sure they can do that just as soon as you pay for it.
The AT is almost 2,200 miles long thru mountainous terrain...and there's no practical reason to have a cell tower along most of it.
What my point was at the end is that getting a good single out in the woods is extremely difficult
starlink will solve that problem
Not even that. If she brought a smartphone and a good power bank this could have been avoided, you get a GPS signal pretty much everywhere. She got lost in 2013, hardly the digital dark ages, think Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5. There was satellite navigation readily available without special equipment.
Why put cell towers all along the AT? That’s ridiculous. Anyone hiking the AT should carry an emergency satellite locator like a SPOT. They’re inexpensive and help is only the push of a button away.
Oh wow. This really hit hard 😭 I’m an avid hiker myself, and I’ve been lost in the woods before, and I know how scary it can be when you don’t have service. I was lost for less than 24 hours before I eventually found my way back to camp, so I still can’t imagine the fear of being lost and unable to reach anyone for that long. I just don't understand how someone who was able to survive for almost a month couldn't in that time period figured out how to be in a place it's easier to find her or how to alert them to where she was. I can understand if she was someone who was only capable of making it a few days out there but she was out there for almost a month and not once did she think of putting herself in a more likely situation of being rescued like a stream or something?
Sommer Godown when you’re lost in an environment like that, even an experienced hiker may run into things that will prevent them from finding help or have help find them. Try not to judge too harshly, not sure if she was injured or if that would even be able to tell coz of the level of decomp but there could be a myriad of factors as to why she couldn’t help herself in that situation.
They also tell you to stay put once you’re lost and she may have done so and gotten too weak to move from that spot, we will never know.
Rip Geraldine ❤️
It's always easy to judge if you weren't in the situation. The trail spot wasn't as well traveled like others. There might was no stream. Plus she might tried to stay put as that's what we get told to do. Don't wander around when you get lost. That's how people end up 40miles from their starting point. The trail surrounding is thick with wilderness and 2 miles sound like nothing until you stand there by yourself. She probably thought she would get found and stood still, with a shelter and waited. Which is what they tell you to do. Too bad she didn't knew how to get more water
She attempted to go higher for phone reception. If you’re getting weaker and weaker, your critical thinking skills suffer. It doesn’t take long to start making poor or uncharacteristic decisions.

Condolences to her family. I listened to the whole story on Mr. Ballen’s RUclips page, he covers a lot of missing 411 stories. Too many people go into the woods and don’t come back alive ☹️
she looked so happy :( starvation is an awful way to pass
Kind of made me start crying too, you wonder how many times she cried, or called for help.
All those damn messages that never made it.
Rest easy now.
Oliver O’Connor every hiker should invest in a satellite SOS beacon, $300 isnt that much when it can be the difference between life and death
Lmao she was rate next to the trail

Eddie Ortiz & Natearl13 you two stop fighting or else I’m going to get mom.
So sad. Bless her, she seems like such a lovely lady and was thinking of her family every day. So awful she died alone, i hope shes dancing in Heaven.
As someone who lives around this area and saw the missing posters this brings me back
Aww poor...lady she just died there that the worst to die on your own I feel for her family...i hope she is rememberd greatly
poor lady. This is so sad
The music at the start sounded like it was from “let her go” and I was about to say it was a very odd choice but this was heartbreaking regardless 🥺
Its heartbreaking to see that she wrote her own death letter to family knowing she wouldnt make it.. but it shows that she was a Fearless woman even in the face of death she managed to survive as long as she could.. she had strong sense of will
“Last place we hadn’t gotten to” . Come on now. Couldn’t scrape enough man power to check the last place
Matt Palmieri they searched for her for over 2 months and actually checked their but somehow missed it
And where were you exactly?
Boracay98ftw I’m saying
Matt Palmieri Sometimes people just don’t want to or cannot help- they can’t just force people to assist.
Dang, I know right?
I thought they were about to say 26 hours but never would’ve expected 26 DAYS. Even the most seasoned survivalist would be challenged to survive that long...
Also if you do not have the ability to find food and water on your own you should never hike alone.
You can survive with zero food for 21 days. In a temperate climate, with a water source, this is how long it takes someone to die.
When people hike the AT they usually carry enough food for several days.
@@colinmcmasters5819 even skinny people last more than a month.
After watching hours of survivor man and man vs wild i would still die
Why is this in my recommend section and this is like 3years ago and it’s April 2020 ;-;
@RGAME 3164 not a damn soul
Can you imagine yourself living getting lost. Dealing with the darkness at night time. Hearing weird noises and being so scare but you had nowhere to run. Just trap, in there waiting for help trying to survive on eating random animasl that go find on your way. Thats the most scariest thing a human can go through. Dying alone and having no hope to be found 😔
That's sad😭😭
Oh my god!!!! I remember watching this episode when it first aired..... I always wondered if they ever found her. This is honestly so sad and very painful to watch.
This made me cry. She was thinking about her family before she died. I wish she would have stayed on the trail.
