  • A California hiker who went missing in the Los Angeles National Forest was saved thanks to a savvy stranger sitting at home on his computer. Rene Compean was reported missing in the San Gabriel mountains about 6 p.m. Monday by a friend who got a text from him saying he was lost and that his cell phone was dying. On Tuesday, the sheriff’s department sent out a call for help on Facebook. Benjamin Kuo saw the photo and then alerted rescuers that he believed he knew where the missing hiker may be. #InsideEdition

When you go always keep a Personal locator beacon on you. They may be expensive but totally worth the money. Also keep a portable hamradio on you. This will also help you when a helicopter gets into range. NEVER HIKE WITHOUT THESE. And NEVER Hike without enough water and food. Make sure you have a good supply for at least 5-7 days.

@@ihs200 yeah you cant use it unless your in an absolute emergency without a license, but you absolutely have to know which frequencies you can use.
Note: i used my dad’s once when there were tornadoes to get word out in the area. My sisterhad a license and said i could use her call. I ended up accidentally using the fire department frequency, but since it was a really rural area it ended up fine and I actually ended up helping more than harming.
I just got a lecture from my dad later on.
Though i did end up the one he preferred taking for rovering Ham Radio contests after that 🤣
He made sure I knew how to use the radio. My car i got from him still has the antenna mounts and cables running through it.
