How a Photo Miraculously Helped Rescue a Missing Hiker

- A California hiker who went missing in the Los Angeles National Forest was saved thanks to a savvy stranger sitting at home on his computer. Rene Compean was reported missing in the San Gabriel mountains about 6 p.m. Monday by a friend who got a text from him saying he was lost and that his cell phone was dying. On Tuesday, the sheriff’s department sent out a call for help on Facebook. Benjamin Kuo saw the photo and then alerted rescuers that he believed he knew where the missing hiker may be. #InsideEdition
His quick thinking could've saved his life. Crazy to believe he sent it and seconds later his phone died.

And carry extra food and a battery pack
And a charging pack with a decent standby time and atleast another full battery worth of charge in it. Preferably have a beacon phone (calls nearby air or water control towers to help get rescued)

He had one last option that determined his survival, and he was able to do it. I can’t help to speculate if maybe sending his location was a better option, but who knows, maybe his battery only had the juice to send one last picture. Eerie as hell. Glad this is a story where the person at the center of the story was able to tell it, instead of his family...
Gps location requires strong signal, he prolly had just enough signal to send a pic.
He literally said he was LOST. People need to listen. He also had no juice.
One factor to it takes longer if too send your location

A couple of months ago a female tourist was hiking on a mountrain trail just North of Vancouver. She was unprepared and unable to return so she called her friend in Toronto who notified police. After watching so many people go missing while hiking on the news, I have decided that if I ever do go hiking I'll buy a GPS locator even if it costs me $300
How does a GPS locator work?
It's funny because there's a free Share my Location feature on Google Maps. My roommate uses it when she goes on trips. If the phone dies, it sends the last location it was found.
If you can find a NON-Bluetooth Spot X, grab one. I got one at Cabelas for $200Cdn. BT is irrelevant as it works without a phone.
Plus about $15 a month. But you can text or email both ways.

If you're going to backpack solo, take a tracker with you. They won't die on your trip, and they report your location on a daily schedule, indicating whether you're OK no problems, OK having problems, or Need Help. The message can go to a specified friend.
A simple tracker works. I used one for a year between Spot and InReach. But it requires a protocol like "If I don't move in 3 days send help". Real PLBs don't cost that much more and allow two-way texting.

When you go always keep a Personal locator beacon on you. They may be expensive but totally worth the money. Also keep a portable hamradio on you. This will also help you when a helicopter gets into range. NEVER HIKE WITHOUT THESE. And NEVER Hike without enough water and food. Make sure you have a good supply for at least 5-7 days.

You also need a ham license to use the ham frequencies, but tech license is so easy, kids do it
Never hike alone if you don’t know the trails well

I ended up accidentally using the fire department frequency, but since it was a really rural area it ended up fine and I actually ended up helping more than harming.
