Nice to watch how (often) they use the lockers. Most of the time the lock the center and the rear differential and they also use the front-locker a lot. If there is some water, Erwin Wonisch (I think he is the instructor - sounds like him *g*) hits the button :-).

Mercedes themself have some diesel engines but those are small engines with 1.4-2.5 litre engines for small efficiant cars. For this kind of car you need a powerful engine that is not developed just for this car but one that has been in development for years and steadily improved and upgaded. the car has a mode for offroade with a very low gear ratio wich makes it fine to use a petrol engine. And it has to do the "german engenieering" part justice. and that you can only do with something that has been refined and reworked with much experience over many years. and the 4 litre bi turbo engine right now is AMG's most advanced engine and they are still improving it.
Yeah, or grabbed the diesel engine from the Unimog U5000 series, those are pretty tough. Sure, it only has 218 hp, but with 810 nm of torque , those are some strong horses.
It would be perfect if It has - manual Trans. - basic model with most interior electronics removed, let's say 80s interior. - more powerful engine 500-600 hp (superchered not turbo charged) - spare tire not being hanged over the back door - diesel engine option (oooohhh) - snorkel - alamonime body (lower height)
carbon fiber fender flairs seem silly, they should be some kind of flexible polyurethane or something. i would have those broken by day 2 of ownership.
It's nice to see an auto manufacturer finally taking full advantage of a truck's capabilities. Sadly, however, given that it's a G Wagon, I'm sure it's grossly overpriced. The regular G Wagon is already crazy expensive. I'm sure they bumped this one up from crazy to insane.
This G-Class will be absolutely amazing for police, army and other defense forces to cross any steep and hard terrain. The bad news comes from the high fuel consumption. Also in safari will be nice. But the engine is so noisy that will disturb some beasts.

G 500 is not a real offroader. It is a G 500 with Luxry Gear Box.... (They just added a portal converter...) Here is a better solution: You can swap Mercedes G Professional axles to Portal Axle and here comes the perfect offroader with a much roobust engine and transmission with a cheaper price.... (Don't forget to change the suspension system to OME)
Nice off road for sure but he interior looks totally out date for 2016. Not even close to the close to the rest of the 2016 for Mercedes line-up. Really disappointing !!!
With the price tag of this thing, not worth it. Anyway, this isn't real off road, even most of today's fake 4WD would pass this with ease. try somewhere you need a real hardcore 4WD.
If i had more dollars than sense , I'd buy 1.. but i don't so a $50,000 jk wrangler with $$35,000 of mods is 4 me. And it would be a far better off roader than a g station wagon

This review does not show me anything that I could not do with my 1987 280GE on 35" tyres ... Oh yes, sorry, driving 210 km/h ... useless ... By the way, engaging 2 lockers, and sometimes all 3 of them, is a nonsense on the gentle muddy track.
You can lift it all you want your differentials will be hanging few inches from the ground so in a sense your clearance won't be much more with bigger tires. Just like all the trucks I see lifted to the sky while all their differentials sit 10-15 inches from the ground. Look at the clearance of this wagon not really lifted but the underbody clearance is very high compare to its lift do to everything underneath being tucked up. But if we took your way of viewing things 500$ car that is still in drivable condition can do anything s class can right?
Nice "toy" for the rich. to high, to heavy, to wide.ha ha! Take a old short wheelbase V8 G Wagon fit with some amored G wagon springs a 2 inch body lift with some 280/85 16 Silverstone tires does a two time better job offroad.
