LOL at all the people talking about how outdated the G wagon style is. They just dont get it. Its timeless and functional. The style is the point of it.

You're right!. But that is also a sad commentary on what the G- Class is today. It is really a product marketed on prestige and image not like the original model in the late '70s which was a very basic utility vehicle for serious off-roading. I will wait to see what the new Land-Rover Defender is like - I hope it isn't turned into a superficial luxury toy like what Mercedes has done to the beloved Geländewagen.

Its not a classic design. The Dodge Challenger has a classic design. The G Wagen is still using the same body from 40yrs ago with modern stuff slapped on.

"Retaining characteristic shape, and All-New versus Product Update!" Jeep has kept their 'heritage' with the all-new 2019 Wrangler. Daimler-Benz has kept their 'heritage' with the all new 2019 G-Wagen. Toyota has kept its heritage with the 2019 Land Cruiser? Land Rover hasn't kept its 'heritage' by ditching the Defender! Hard luck Land Rover. Excellent review Thomas.

Jaguar/Land Rover missed a trick, they didn't invest any money in the Defender's long and valuable history, didn't improve the recent ones enough (unlike Jeep & Mercedes), and thus may not have been able to get away with claiming a "modern" Defender was just "importantly retaining its characteristic shape", but built and equipped like the new Magna-Steyr G-Class, was just a "product update"...
Land Rover said they couldn't get Defender through safety regs - airbags, ABS, ESP, crash tests - so had to stop production.
Range Rover doesn't belong to 70 interior and exterior boring design range rover is about living in 2018♥️♥️ not 70s

Central camera position: good, when you're able! 50:16 very good images of mirrors, and the demo of BLIS - well done. Diff-lock button press 'delay' was interesting! For an off-roader, much prefer a softer, comfier ride, and just slow down for corners and co-drivers! Liked the blue car with the bright interior. Cheers.

Yes, at 22 mins I am still watching this engaging, informative presentation. This is far better than Clarkson-type motorcar programmes, where the ego of the presenter is half or more of the appeal of the show.

SnookerQtr honestly if you could even afford these SUV’s, price likely isn’t an important factor in choosing a model. they’re all still well over $150K.

Kind of a new viewer, very good video Thomas! Regarding the camera, I really like the middle mounted camera for a kind of panoramic view.
The Thomas blue is the best looking color on cars.
It would also be very interesting if you could do a duo review between new G-Class and new Range Rover.

I love the G63, but the panamericana grille does not fit to this car. The reason is simple. The vertical lines gain an optical effect that makes the grille look like slimmer. This looks terrible, also on the new C63 Coupe. The only car where the pana grille fits is the GT because it gots a very wide grille. Am I the only one who noted this design mistake?

True, panamericana grill steals the show from G-Class. If anyone loves AMG, they can enjoy performance dynamics in E63s AMG (Estate/Coupe/Sedan) & still crave for G-Class, then G500 is the way to go instead of G63, as Thomas well mentioned that off-road capability of G500 being greater than G63 AMG.

Stop and start it's a rubbish feature, its shortn the life of the engine .....
In the opening first two minutes this presentation is spoilt by the usual American rock sound track. Very annoying. Will I get through the complete auto-documentary?
27 minutes in and it is still an engaging presentation. I have learnt much about these cars , the 2019 G500 and G63.

ITs EASILY the most iconic SUVs on the road. The Range Rover is a close second but the G Wagon reigns supreme

In 10 years time, Mercedes Benz will add MBUX in G-wagon. Then in 20 years time from now, they will add panoramic moon roof. So, if you want to buy a G-wagon that has both MBUX and panoramic moon roof; you have to wait for 10 and 20 years respectively. 😂

Being salomonic, I'd say this setup is perfect for big offroaders and SUV's whilst the other one suits sportier cars better.
Zenith Red I think you're right, it's spot on.
G550 is the better overall choice. Not a fan of the G63. The G is an off-road machine, not a sports car. G550 also drives better on road - the G63 is always trying to switch to 4 cylinder mode, and makes for a jerky/odd ride.
This car needs good,reliable and powefull DIESEL engine . On top of that at least 120L fuel tank. And it is ready to take on the World. Great review. Ty

personally I don't like the new design, they've curved all the straight edges... the hole point of the G is for it to be boxy...

How about the turning circle, could they reduce it ? The predassessor felt like a boat and had a huge turning circle of more than 13 meters, almost as big as the one of the defender. The wheel base was just 2,85 meters but it took almost 2 meters more to turn, than the S- class !
Why do off roaders are always so unhandy in general ?
dear tomas, you should compare amg g63 VS range rover sv autobiography 5.0 supercharged or overfinch version....
don't forget it's not just standard G63 (red stripes...) it's Edition One, which available only in the firs year (2019)of selling that cars
Middle mounted camera's absolutely preferred for better exposure and seeing what's the speed or how does it look like as a driver.
Just test drove G63 in the race track which totally changed my mind. There was a big question in my mind for a while asking why do they drive this kind of car. But everything changed when I drove it myself. You feel like a king on the road because you're driving king of cars!! or maybe G class was firstly designed by Mercedes for Shah of Iran, King of Persia in 1970s (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_G-Class ). I really loved the seat lumbar supports when turning fast in the corners. The acceleration sound is a deep enjoyment satisfying me of driving this tank. It is a perfect match for my personality. The feeling is far different than driving other cars. Absolutely considered as the next car.
Probably in a minority here, but I love the driving position, looking down on the bonnet. Gives you much greater confidence.
Loving the Van Halen style music, sehr cool!! You can clearly see that the engineering and design team really put lots of effort into the detail and to improve it in so many aspects compared to the outgoing model, they're passion is much appreciated 👍

My most fave dream SUV, now with the best ergonomic dash/cabin atmosphere of the series. Wind noise definitely has increased ( 31:11 ) the moment you passed the big semi trailer but surely that's the least gripe when you're sitting in one of the best, properly capable SUV out there. Very relaxed and a fine review there Thomas.

Ordered the G63, the almighty mystic cube on wheels. I totally dislike Edition1 tacky variants though. As for rivals, to me the closest would be the new Jeep Wrangler only at a more affordable level of course. And obviously will take it offroad, with three differential locks at hand it's mandatory despite the 21" wheels ;)

Hey Thomas, the right blue for you! What I think about this geländewagen is too many shapes and forms. It's loud and clearly an improvement but a confusing design with components the the rest the Mercedes lineup.

i actually am liking the front of the car but the way they have rounded the windows and the doors makes it look cheaper to me, i think it would have looked better if they kept last years doors

You know when you second guess yourself? Well I like to ask others whenever I see a G Class passing by or parked. The answer 100 % of the time from common normal average people is not positive in the least. I have the GLE400 as my third Mercedes, & 100 % of the time I get compliments as I did with the Raptor F-150 SVT a few years ago.
Mercedes listen!!! Bring out the G-Force with all the Technologies by 2020 :).......
its a pretty sad life when you live your life in such a mundane way, in where you make all your decisions based on what other peoples comments or opinions might be. I've bought two cars(only 26 here) and im considering switching to the new G wagon, but every time I buy, I do a ton of research, and never once does (what people think and what's popular) cross my mind. I think of function, the terrains I want to drive on, the capabilities and performance that will help me provide solutions to current issues I want to sort out with my existing vehicle- what can work better for me, what I don't need, what id like to have. etc.
Another thumbs up from me. Only thing that gets me is when you always say “fake” drone view re the parking cameras. I think fake is such a negative word these days. It’s only fake if a manufacturer is trying to deceive. Just “drone view” would probably work better.

The G500 looks definitely much better with it looks Mercedes Benz grille than the G63 grille make the jeep looks like a cheap Chinese brand or Brazil ,Mexico & Taiwan counterfeit products.

G500 all the time … G63 is nice no doubt about it but, when I go off road the g 63 amg is in my opinion too much race car …

Love it! G500 for me - makes no sense to pay a premium for a proper offroader and then pay an extra 50k to take all that capability away. I actaully like the 500 look better for once, paired with AMG really watering down the brand these days (ex GLB35), I dont think that badge carries the same weight it did 5-10 years ago.

Just curious Thomas, do you make a habit of running into pedestrians? Given your concern for the G Class's ability to deflect bodies properly and all....LOL (Kidding). At first I thought they had destroyed the G, but you've convinced me otherwise. Currently that beast is way the hell out of my price range, but if I were to win the lotto or something I'd go for the G500 over the G63, unlike the current generation where I'd be apt to go for the latter.
This is my dream car and the Maybach Exelero, I will be driving both in Heaven (Hereafter) customised to my own specifications after I die (إن شاء الله) 😍💝… Wish me luck and quick death 😜🤪😉
It looks like shit compared to the old one...the whole point and appeal of the old one is that it had the same body from 1979...this is just a wierd wannabe old car....They should of kept the same design only made parts from aluminium and upgraded the interior....

Awesome review and location, like always, but this car! It was looking a surviving old lady, now only a makeuped surviving old lady! I don't know, if only they add to their perfect engineering and perfect details a serious work in what we call it Cars' Design, they innovate in everything except in the shapes of their cars, disappointing more generation after generation, I am talking about 95% of their designs, cos I "can" only exclude the GTc. (sure this is my personal opinion) Happy weekend everyone!
