    Juna.. I have one of these and it is a very cool sound under certain circumstances. They are great for Funk actually and also for adding base into some Neo ethnic grooves as well. Thanks for putting this up it's nice to see something current from you. Glad to be your fan and wishing you well everyday

    Really interesting. I’ve been playing a fretted bass banjo with rubber strings and your comments have really helped. ❤

  • @metallsnubben
    @metallsnubben 2 года назад +3

    Yeah for the tuning, it's that those rubber strings have a LOT of friction with the nut, and they're also so short and low tension so there's not a ton of force to overcome that friction. But as you say, lifting the string up makes the tension change that was "stuck above the nut" spread out across the string again.
    Guitars with freshly changed strings have this problem a lot, as well as those with (non-locking) whammy systems. Hence why people put everything from graphite (pencil lead) to special slidey powders in the nut slots to try to have the strings slide as freely as possible - but not sure if that stuff would work for a U-bass with the much thicker strings

  • @weldonwilson

    Use a pencil and put a little graphite in the grooves the strings sit in. This will help them to overcome the friction in these spots. This also works for your new violin (on the bridge and the nut - the piece of wood the strings ride over to get to the pegs) and any other string instruments. Yes, pulling the string sideways is commonly used when you loosen the string because of the friction at the nut. I have no experience with rubber strings but I know that new strings on violins and violas will take a week or more to stretch out when placed on an instrument before they will hold a tune. I imagine that rubber strings would be worse as it seems to me that rubber would have more stretch to it and would take longer to take a set. I haven't heard of pushing the strings up towards the pegs before but then again, those are rubber strings and it does seem like they would want to stick more at the nut and would stretch between the peg and the nut and need more force to overcome the friction (I know nut probably isn't what it is called on a guitar but I'm used to it being called that on violins and violas).

    It's good to see Juna playing a Kala bass! I've been playing two Kala basses for the last six years--one hollow-body and one solid, both fretless--and have been very happy with both of them. The best thing about the solid body is it hardly varies under different conditions of heat and humidity. The band I play in is outdoors six months of the year, and I can trust that the tuning will not have to be checked every ten minutes. It also only weighs about 5 lbs., so a two-hour session is no strain on my back or neck. These Kalas are my go-to gig basses.
