I bought the X 100 V, and now the X 100 VI, because I was tired of schlepping my Sony full frame camera on trips and family outings. If the Sony is an easel, the Fuji is a sketch pad. If you understand exactly what it is (and isn't) the limitations actually become an invitation to explore the limits of your own pure photography. I take it with me everywhere and I love it.
Totally agree. A lot of this initial impressions video is my reactions to the limitations and using my experience to adapt to it. Like I said "in capable" hands it's a powerful camera. Totally do NOT recommend it to new photographers. If you know what you're doing, understand it's limitations, the way around them etc, it's an amazing camera. Love your insight.
What a great (fun) honest review. It’s forte is street work and ultra light travel. Of course, if you then buy all the ‘extras’ including lens hoods, batteries, teleconverters etc you could buy an XT5 or even the pro XH2 and the excellent kit zooms. For the vloggers the little XS20 and either kit zooms are a better option and then they can save up for a couple of HQ compact primes. In essence, know your use case before splashing the cash. There is better VFM out there but few competitors for out and about. It’s a shame that Canon seems to have given up on high quality compacts. The overall UI of canon is far better than Fuji. The small Sony’s are too overpriced and allegedly have reliability issues with their in body, compact zoom lenses.
Aside from the aesthetics (yes I’m superficial, sue me🤣), the most important feature of the X100 series is definitely the leaf shutter and ND filter, combined with the internal flash, it’s a backlight killer. Try shooting with it at 1/2000 with the Sun behind your subject and you’ll take photos you never thought you could with internal flash. Obviously an external high powered flash with flash sync, soft box and reflector will do much better, but with a little work you'll be amazed what the internal flash can do. Not to further sound like a fan boy, but the X100VI is actually a good deal for the sum of its parts, i.e. weather sealing (with UV filter), IBIS, 23mmF2 lens, ND filter, internal flash with 1/2000 sync speed. Imagine getting all these extra equipment with the XT5 and you’ll end up with at least an additional $1000 + 1KG! Now the downside of course is the fixed lens (even with the underrated TCL and WCL it’s still limited in focal lengths). So I totally agree with you that this camera is not for everybody, and definitely need to know what you’re getting into before buying. So IMO it's not overhyped and the features are practical and useful, just not for everyone. All that being said, I’m still contemplating upgrading to the X100VI from the V (I upgraded from the X100T and F, as 16 to 24 mp was a big jump, and the lens of the F & V is day and night). But for me, the X100V is practically a stills camera and I have my XT5 with various zoom lenses for videos. The only value added feature for me is the 40mp which makes it easier to crop images another 30% when I couldn’t get close enough to the subject. The IBIS will help in videos I guess. Will see if I enjoy shooting with my XT5 and then decide. And in your other video, I also noted the F1.4 is much better than the F2, so a more useful comparison should be with the 23mm F2, and as I said, I wish Fuji would upgrade that lens to the X100V formula, which fixed the close focus issue.
I have one - black. The hidden item is that back button focus has a hiccup!! If using auto ISO the camera dose not meter till the shutter is depressed halfway down. And yes … I’m still working on it. Stay safe - stay well.

Surprised to see that the older 23mm 1.4R outperformed the X100VI's built-in lens. The gap between the new 23mm 1.4 LM WR must be even greater. I think Fuji should have kept it as a 26MP with a stacked sensor to match the older lens design. I own the X100T, X-T20, XS-10, and X-T5, and the greatest advantage IMO of the X100 series is, like you mentioned, the inclusion of a built-in ND filter and that leaf shutter that allows flash outdoors at higher shutter speeds. I have a 1/8 CTO filter glued to my on-camera flash on the X100T and often use it in backlit situations for environmental portraits for a warmer fill-light - it looks great!
Thanks for your insight. All excellent comments. I need to think about getting a CTO for the flash. I use CTO on my Profoto lights but having it on the on camera flash sounds like an excellent idea. Not only did the old 23mm 1.4 perform better but mine has scratches all over the front and rear elements (I beat the hell out of it) and it was still noticeably better when zooming in. Zoomed out, it was hard to tell the difference though. The 25MP thing makes sense but the flip side of that is that with the digital zoom / crop files could get pretty small pretty quickly. However, a stacked sensor would greatly improve low-light performance. So maybe the trade off is worth it. On the subject of ND filters. My biggest takeaway from buying this camera is that I'm now pissed when I shoot with my GFX100S, R5, XH2 etc because I WANT those internal ND filters. Camera manufacturers need to stop making that a "Cinema Only" feature.
@@KevinDeal Yeah same. Once you get used to having the built-in ND it is really hard to go back. This is especially true on the X-T5 with the 40MP sensor. We often hit diffraction at around f/6.3 so it really helps to have an ND to slow down the shutter in daylight. And yeah, the cropping capacity on 40MP really helps for a fixed lens camera, but it would be more beneficial if they had the sharper lens to match the sensor and fully unlock its cropping capabilities. Otherwise the effective resolution is still not what it could be... But who cares! Critical sharpness is one of the least important things in making a good photograph. :)
A very complete and professional review. You covered everything. I have this camera and enjoyed your look at it...and I subscribed. I take this camera with me as I walk around town. I'm defnitely loving it. I've been stopped a few times by interested folks who think I have a film camera. I'm very happy with the images, but the thing I like the most is that it is just a lot of fun. I've shot with Fuji XT3, 4, and 5, so the menu structure isn't new to me. Thanks again and well done, Kevin. Thanks for putting in all the work to bring this to us.
Thanks for the thoughtful review. I got my X100VI a few weeks ago to replace my X100V and it may be my favourite camera purchase of all time. I own 'better' cameras with larger sensors and sharper lenses, but I don't take them with me when I leave the house.
Your last sentence hit the nail on the head. It’s not the best camera in terms of image quality but the image quality is good enough and you’re way more likely to take it with you.
Thank you for this video, which truly gives me something to look forward to. Firstly, I plan to visit LV this year and explore the route between LA and Oklahoma City. Your video has sparked my interest and has somehow ignited a sense of anticipation within me. Secondly, there's a good chance that an X100VI camera will accompany me on this journey, alongside my XT-5. In summary, your video resonated with me on many levels. I almost forgot to mention, this is one of the videos with the most honest reviews I've seen.
Hi Kevin. I agree the VI is a beautiful camera, packed with features. I do not believe that it is for me. When I want to travel with a “light” kit, I use my Fuji X-T3 with a 23mm f2, 35mmf2, or the 50mmf2. Works for me. Love your channel.😊
Light is relative. And I agree, you can achieve “light” with larger options (like the XT3) and have more versatility with extra lenses. As someone who shoots on a Canon R5 system with massive L lenses, all Fuji cameras are light to me. It all comes down to what works for you! Thanks for the compliments on my channel!
Lucky Dog! I guess I didn't realize you're a Texas guy! God... how I miss it. Spent a total of 10 years there 2 transfers. Should have never left after the second transfer. Plano (mostly) Austin 6 months. Austin was wonderful back in '84. Haven't visited since '16. I'm guessing I wouldn't like it nor recognize it. You're in photography paradise. Used to head out of town on Bee Cave Road to County Line, then head out to "Hippy Hollow" (can't imagine that's still there). The Hill Country I've often said is one of America's greatest spots. Especially Spring when those Lady Bird Bluebonnet's are popping. BTW (back to your video)... Can't find the VI anywhere here in Japan. Yes... V and F's obscenely priced. Only advantage I see is always carry available (convenience) and street photography. Nice camera. Actually I keep hearing the Ricoh GRIIIX or H are better photo camera's. Again, yet another camera you can't find anywhere. Your channel is great... to the point. Practical hand's on. Cheers!
Thank you for the adapter backward issue. Def happened to me. I dislike the UHS-I slot because when I'm traveling I want to be able to pull off photos fast without bringing an SD card adapter.
Great review. Thank you. I'm also a Canon R5 Shooter. I use it for work, personal projects and fun. I ordered the X100VI as a very light and very capable walk around camera, whether for street or travel. I've been doing an "Agreeable Strangers" project for about 10 years now and my preferred focal length is 50mm because it puts me close enough to use a reflector (I make direct contact and chat with my subjects, asking them to look directly into my lens) and one-hand my camera. The X100VI with the tele conversion lens for a 50mm equivalent will be great for that. (I'd rather that than the digital zoom...still makes for an extremely lightweight and small kit). I will, alas, probably be waiting until June as I didn't get my order in until February 28th. That's first world problems, though, of course. Cheers, Charles
Thanks for the kind words. For what you’re getting it for, with the teleconverter, you’re getting the perfect camera. An unexpected thing I’ve been using for a lot now is B roll. If you have good lighting I just use the IBIS and ND filters to get quick steady B roll video. Just print the film simulation right into the video and it looks fantastic.
I demo-d the X100 V1 yesterday. I wasn't keen as I had to go through menus all the time rather than having a good amount of function buttons. I do prefer my x-h2.
I own both the X100VI and the XH2 and if you take the time to program the buttons and the swipes, you may actually be able to program the X100VI to do everything you need it to do. It's not as good of a camera as the XH2 though.
Great review and video, very in-depth. I’ve had my q2 since 2020 and now possess the x100vi. Many things you mentioned I agree with. It’s no where near my Leica in terms of quality and build, but I’m willing to sacrifice size and weight for this smaller lightweight.
It's annoying that there are people who order multiple copies of this camera only to resell them on eBay at grossly inflated prices. They are also contributing to the shortfall in availability to those who really want one.
GREAT review, man. Also appreciate that if I close my eyes, you sound just like JACK BLACK. Can you redo the entire video as the Kung Fu Panda? :) Cheers
I will always take that as a compliment - sounding like Jack Black. It's also an honor to get some love from Omar, since your You Tube channel has had a huge influence on me as a "You Tuber." Your channel has taught me not to take myself so seriously and not all reviews have to be from the standpoint of an expert. They can also come from a place of discovery .
I just bought a X100VI from a Fuji user that didn’t like this body. He sold it to me for his price. Right now I’m setting it up. There are so many menu choices that this isn’t easy. I’m upgrading from the X100T so there are definitely some noticeable differences. I’m going to use this camera for street and as my EDC. Maybe expensive for what it is but I’m not going to buy a Q3. I’m experimenting with the GRiiix and having some problems with it. Obviously I knew there wasn’t an EVF. I feel uncomfortable just pointing and hoping the framing is correct. Though the GR is smaller and lighter I prefer the VI experience. Now that I’ve scored a VI I won’t be purchasing any new gear for a while. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Hey Kevin nice video. Im not sure of your assessment re sharpness of the X100VI. It resolves incredible detail wide open. The 23mm F1.4 is twice the size of the lens on XV100. I have the 23mm F2 and the x100vi beats it hands down at F2. When stopped down to 5.6 it catches up.
Not my experience at all. It makes sense when you compare your tiny f2 lens to another tiny f2 lens that you may experience better performance. When compared to a lens with much more glass and more complex optical design, the 1.4 is sharper. Hands down. When zoomed in the 100VI is noticeably softer. Most lenses stopped down are much closer to one another. But even stopped down, the 1.4 is noticeably sharper than the 23 f2 on the X100VI. This is pretty normal when you have much more glass. Nonetheless, I think the 100VI is sharp enough. Thank you for the compliments!
Wow, love your work. You actually used it and got some great street shots including - well it looks like using the built in ND for some excellent motion blurred movement in broad daylight - so atmospheric!
Best review to date, amazing job and the various moustaches helped. I ordered mine on the 21st of last month and I’ve been told I’m in the next dispatch of orders. Thing is I’m getting squeaky bum time as I’m still on fence between the vi or an xt5 with a 23 or 33 f1.4 lens.
Despite staying up late to watch the X Summit and videos that followed I couldn’t pull the trigger until the next say. Hoping I get my camera this year 😂
Thing is always back ordered so I make do with a Canon 1dx mark III and a 50mm 1.2L. Its like carrying a speed graphic camera and no one bothers me lol😂
You said you can’t change lenses on the X100VI (or V) which is correct… and kinda not too. You can of course use the adapter lenses to make the 35 mm lens into 28 & 50mm lenses. Okay, you’re still limited in choices but combined those with the inbuilt crop mode it can give you many options of focal lengths, admittedly with lens pixels but it’s doable. I love my X100V and quite often take it out rather than pick up my X-T5… but I would buy the VI if I could get one. 🏴
I'm going to B&H on wednesday to see it in person and compare it to a Ricoh GR III, Also if possible put it side to side to an XT5. It's hard not to buy into the hype when you can literally not see it in person because it's sold out everywhere, but hopefully those 3 in person will make my decision making a lot easier, even if I do decide to wait until June/July for it LOL xD
I'm pretty sure the XT5 is the same sensor as the XH2 I compare it to in the video. Pixel peeping, the XH2 clearly looked better to me. It all came down to the glass. While the X100VI glass is good enough, a XH2, and likely an XT5, with a 23 1.4, should look better. You're definitely doing the right thing by putting your hands on one.
@@KevinDeal according to the specs the XT-5 and the X100VI share the same sensor. But for me it's about how comfortable it'll be in the hand, and how "pocketable"
i think about getting something like this sometime, then i remember that i have a phone and it would be the same cost to get a point and shoot + 50 rolls of CineStill 800T
I shoot on both film and on my phone and neither experience is similar to shooting on the X100VI. Different tools. But if you prefer film, nothing wrong with 800T. Good stuff.
@@KevinDealyes, its definitely not the same thing, but for leisure/lifestyle photography I think its a fair comparison. im struggling to think of a situation where this range of digital cameras has a leg up for the prepared photographer. guess its all in the ibis
@@CRIMSONCITADeL the built in ND filters are also something my iPhone doesn't have. Plus, that tiny iPhone sensor looks like butt in low lighting situations. An iPhone will always be the most convenient option.
The R8 is going to have better autofocus (like significantly better). And while that 2.8 is darker on the 28mm, it's a full frame and the R8 is super clean in low light. So I would say the R8 is probably better as a night camera, better AF and it can change lenses. The ergonomics of the R8 are also better (grip, button locations etc). Where the X100VI wins is it is more discreet, it has the film simulations built in, it has IBIS and it has those internal ND filters. All those advantages, make it better-suited for street. You can also get the wide and teleconverters to make the X100VI display as a 28mm or a 50mm. I'm more inspired to shoot street photography when I have the X100VI in my hands, despite the fact that the R8 is still fun and gets the job done. I am working on my RF28mm 2.8 review, which I shot in Vegas at the same time. Hope to have it out in the coming weeks. Thanks for the watch!
It was warm and on when I arrived at my location. I didn’t have my stop watch on me Also. If something keeps pressing against it in your bag, that could keep turning it on.
@@geuskoeman721 If you need the IBIS, I could see that being a good reason. Otherwise, it's just the same lens with a larger sensor and one extra film simulation. But, people are still paying a lot for the V, so your upgrade cost might not be that much.
@@pixelmixture3067 Maybe it will be in a firmware update. I have that feature on my GFX100S and I love it. I set it up as a template crop in Capture One because I do love to see images in that way from time to time.

Fujifilms standard flaw, even for newer lenses: noisy AF motor … Even for their best selling camera, they aren’t able to develop a new lens. Their lens development, that’s like watching a long, long movie in slow motion.
Compared to my XF18mm, it's a quiet lens. In the video I turned the volume up 20db and the lens was definitely louder than the shutter. But in general, the noise of the lens didn't bother me compared to other models. I do agree with you that sometimes their lens development can be slow-moving.

Thank you for the kind words! And it sounds like we use the camera in similar ways. It’s a powerful tool on powerful hands for sure.
Have fun on your trip! I always try to be honest.
Dammit. This Reala ace is really sucking me in and I think I’m gonna break and get a Fuji camera
It's a pretty cool simulation.
Cheers!
I can confirm. Hippy Hollow is still here. Alive and well. The city has changed dramatically.
Thank you for the adapter backward issue. Def happened to me. I dislike the UHS-I slot because when I'm traveling I want to be able to pull off photos fast without bringing an SD card adapter.
Yes, the backwards adapter issue is no fun. I wouldn't complain if they went to UHS-II.
Great review! Balanced and honest with lots of use cases. Not just a bunch of hype. Appreciate the detail you put into this.
Thanks!
That's an impressive ibis for low light and handheld shooting.
Great photos too!
Thank you. And I agree. Love the IBIS
@@KevinDeal Great tip. Thank you!
Excellent review.
Thank you kindly!
@@KevinDeal I think after being used to the viewfinder in the x-h2, I was taken back by how small it seemed in the X100v1.
Great review and video, very in-depth. I’ve had my q2 since 2020 and now possess the x100vi. Many things you mentioned I agree with. It’s no where near my Leica in terms of quality and build, but I’m willing to sacrifice size and weight for this smaller lightweight.
Leicas are definitely a cut above.
It's annoying that there are people who order multiple copies of this camera only to resell them on eBay at grossly inflated prices. They are also contributing to the shortfall in availability to those who really want one.
Exactly why I called it out
Plenty available in some markets though 😮
I liked your video very informative
I encounter the filter thread - on my fungi x100V - soon learned
Thank you for the video. 👍😊
Thank you for the kind words. Glad it was helpful!
Great review, mine is coming today Friday from b&h, preordered on 2/20,
Hope you enjoy it!
They have a ton of menus. Fuji menus, in my opinion aren't laid out well.
Thank you. I wish all cameras had internal NDs.
XT5 will look better zoomed in. X100 will be more convenient. Sharpness differences zoomed out and stopped down will be harder to tell.
Moustache !?!? Merveilleux !
Thanks!
I find the video mode super easy to access. You press drive and then up, that's it. You don't have to go all the way down ;-)
True. Still want a dedicated switch.
if you had to pick between silver and black which one would you go for?
As seen in the video, I went with silver. I love the look.
Despite staying up late to watch the X Summit and videos that followed I couldn’t pull the trigger until the next say. Hoping I get my camera this year 😂
I hope you get it soon.
Thing is always back ordered so I make do with a Canon 1dx mark III and a 50mm 1.2L. Its like carrying a speed graphic camera and no one bothers me lol😂
I think you'll be find with the 1DX. Lol
“The damn cap on, “ been there.
Gets me every time
You said you can’t change lenses on the X100VI (or V) which is correct… and kinda not too.
Yes. I have the TCL-X100. It’s alright. I don’t consider cropping anything other than cropping.
Thanks for a great review!
My pleasure! Thank you for the kind words!
Like the Dirk Diggler look!
Can’t take myself super seriously in Vegas.
It’s literally the camera emoji 📷
Facts were spoken
Already excited for your future contents! +1 SUB :D
Awesome, thank you for subbing!
@@luisarturohernandezramirez5910 Basically, I found the X100VI was pocketable in a hoodie. Anything smaller than that was a no go.
I was very curious about this camera. Nice review. I don’t think I need any more toys though
Me neither. But for some reason they keep ending up in my camera cabinet. lol
i think about getting something like this sometime, then i remember that i have a phone and it would be the same cost to get a point and shoot + 50 rolls of CineStill 800T
An iPhone will always be the most convenient option.
only for the mustache you have my like hahahahahah
lol. Thank you!
What are your thoughts on this camera vs the R8 + RF 28 2.8?
@@KevinDeal thanks!
Nice review
Thank you!
Unfortunately in my country this compact tiny camera are more expensive than sony a7iv.
They go for more than that in the US as well
No, the camera doesn’t stay on for 45 minutes if you don’t switch it off. It has auto-shut-off.
It was warm and on when I arrived at my location. I didn’t have my stop watch on me
Also. If something keeps pressing against it in your bag, that could keep turning it on.
have the 5 upgrade/
You have the V? How are you liking it?
@@KevinDeal have the 5 thinking to upgfade
@@geuskoeman721 If you need the IBIS, I could see that being a good reason. Otherwise, it's just the same lens with a larger sensor and one extra film simulation. But, people are still paying a lot for the V, so your upgrade cost might not be that much.
Thanks kevin
it desperately lacks the 65:24 aspect ratio ...
I just do it in post. But I do agree, would have been a nice addition.
@@KevinDeal with 40Mpx it would produce 20Mpx panoramic shots ... more than enough ... too bad
@@pixelmixture3067 Maybe it will be in a firmware update. I have that feature on my GFX100S and I love it. I set it up as a template crop in Capture One because I do love to see images in that way from time to time.
@@KevinDeal don't hold your breath ... jonas rask is asking for this for years ...
@@pixelmixture3067 It makes a lot of sense. They should totally do it.
Yes but is it a camera you can get lost with ? 😂
I've gotten lost with it a couple of times.
I very much enjoyed this video.. It answered a few questions I had. It's obvious that you are knowledgeable and a serious photographer. I plan on watching more from your channel. I'm only hesitant to subscribe right now, for one reason.... Loose the silly stuff. You don't need it. I got your point about the hipster rage over this camera.... But yeah... Loose the silly.
Glad it was helpful!
I do agree with you that sometimes their lens development can be slow-moving.
sorry Fuji
It's a fun camera!
No interest at all. I generally don't throw my money away on novelty items...
It's definitely a niche camera and if you're not the niche, it's probably not a good use of money.
Yet here you are!
okay? like anyone cares about you and your money. especially those who have a lot of money.
there's always one in every x100vi comment section of this kind of guy lol. a cringe guy who thinks he is better than everyone, who is superior than anyone, and don't want other people to enjoy things they like. haha.
