  • Here's a C64 Shooter you were not allowed to buy! What's the story? Was Activision being a dick? Or was it justified? Watch to find out!

There's something amazing about hearing C64 sound effects being emitted from the Game Boy. Such a fascinating history this development team had with a space shooter. Being a giant R-Type fan, I wanna try these out.

You left me with that helicopter sample that plays every time the word is ever mentioned (inside my head now) so I don't thank you for that.

A story and games I was unaware of. The GBC Katakis 3D actually looks pretty damned good!

I'm going to need to try Katie's Kiss on C64 now, never heard of it before, nor did I know Factor 5 were a part of Rainbow arts! Now I'm enlightened!

I've got Iridion 1 and 2! (There's nice officially emulated ones on Steam, currently on sale thanks to Piko).

Lovely video, Bloggs! Learned quite a bit and had no idea bout Katakis 3D. Really impressive stuff for the GBC.

Katakis 3D looks amazing. It seems to have sprite scaling

Enforcer has been my favorite shooter back then, the difference compared to Katakis or R-Type in graphics are outstanding and I like how Enforcer kind of connects Katakis and Turrican, so the reused sprites are a plus for me.
    Nice gameplay and great video!

Wow! I never knew of the Katakis Story before! Then again; I'm NOT into the whole C64/Amiga/European Computer Scene (something I WANTED to remedy FOR AGES)!! Quite the tale of such a little R-Type clone!! Very good video Bloggos!! A homer for the Bloggos Team!!

How did Manfred manage to get a proper sprite scaling shooter on the GBC? That is insane given the extremely limited hardware. I had to factcheck that it wasn't a Gameboy Advance game... I'd have been impressed to see those effects on the Amiga, let alone a lowly GBC

Great video, really enjoyed seeing Katakis 3D. I'm a big fan of Manfred Trenz and his C64 work - Turrican and Turrican II both have incredible shoot 'em up sections. In fact, in Turrican II you can find a power-up that reveals the message KATAKIS LIVES! when you shoot it. Protovision had been working on a sequel to Enforcer, with permission, but it only ever reached a 2-level preview and the programmer quit due to ill health. Personally, I was never the biggest fan of C64 R-Type as the graphics didn't match up very well to the original. Playing it now it is a good conversion but not top-tier work - the Huelsbeck soundtrack is great, though.

The last 10 seconds of this very video references "katakis lives " 😄

I've always pronounced it "Katakis", myself.

I always say "Cat-aa-Kiss" personally, with equal emphasis on the syllables. Then again, it's based on a Greek name found in a telephone directory so "Kat-AR-kiss" might be closer to the original pronunciation...

Definitely interesting and very informative! Katakis on the C64 looks really impressive, as does Katakis 3D on the Game Boy Color! Shame about the very disappointing Amiga version though! Enforcer on the other hand, looks like another high quality C64 shooter, from Manfred Trenz! I will be sure to add C64 Katakis, Enforcer, along with X-Out aka Crossout and Z-Out aka Squiggle Out, to my Pi library ASAP!😄Great to see the Turrican II easter egg, robotic helicopter! helicopter! rules and Katakis still Lives! Excellent video, I really enjoyed it!😊

I’m assuming they simply built the engine, and then added different tiles/sprites and patterns to each one.
