I love the show, I really wish Nickelodeon treated it better than it did. Mike and Bryan really tried their best with what they were given, but Nickelodeon just kept screwing them over at every turn. Such a tragedy. Also, this fix with season 1 would have made Season 2 much better as well. But that's a discussion for another time.
Grrreaaaatt video man! The way Korra loses her bending then gets it back in THE SAME DAMN EPISODE is soo frustrating. I think your change would have made the show much better. Doubling down on Korra losing her bending and stretching that out throughout the entire series is honestly so much more interesting than what we got.
It still would not have been good if she didn't get her bending back. The writers never resolved the political and ethical issues between benders and non-benders that Amon raised. That's the real reason the season 1 ending sucked. The season ended with "Amon is a meanie and a hypocrite, we beat him now everything is back to normal." Terribly written.
Good point. Maybe by not having her bending she would be better able to empathize with the equalists and benders and be a bridge between both groups (which is more in alignment with the Avatar being a "bridge" for peace). I was excited for the equalist plot; there's still so much that can be explored.
If only Nickelodeon had handled the show with more care. After greenlitting season 2 (which was done when the writing for season 1 was almost done) there should have been a hiatus to give Bryke more time with the script, extend the contract with Studio Mir etc.
You could cut out Korra regaining her bending through Aang and instead make season 2 where partway through the season she overcomes a waterbending block, then season 3 would be about overcoming the spiritual blocks that keep her from Earthbending, and season 4 would be fire. She'd be a far stronger protagonist for the story instead of how things turned out..
Korra season one was good but I felt it had a few major problems, the ending being one of them. Either of these new endings would have definitely been better, and made the series as a whole better. Great video as always Goldman, love to see that you're talking about other franchises that you love.
they could've done her regaining her bending better, too. katara could've reverted amon's bloodbending with her own, this would tie in nicely with the overall plot of the first season, with bending being bad an all, because in this case bending would be doing something really good, and it's the same kind of bending that started amon's desire for bending to disappear.
Great to see Avatar content from you that’s really great. Shame Korra got so screwed over by Nickelodeon Mike and Bryan really tried to make best of what they had to work with really deserved much better conditions then that. Interesting ways to improve on season 1 and possibly later seasons too.
I think they should have leaned hard into loosing her bending and that regaining it had been central to her character arc for the whole series. Aang should have told her that she could relearn her bending and I like your second option although would take it a lot farther with visits to the animal that taught bending. That said my one change would have not been with Korra, but with Amon. The writers did Amon dirty. He really could have been a top notch villain and the world building around how non-benders fit into society could have been extraordinary. That burn on his face should have been real, his father should have been a blood bender that tortured him, he should have been a non-bender who had been tormented by benders which caused him to wander in the wilderness and at some point gain a spiritual connection to a lion turtle who gave him spirit/energy bending whatever Aang had been given to take the Fire Lord's power away. They had already set up that non-bender had less opportunity and were discriminated against, so leaning into it was a solid place to go. Using blood bending to mess of bender bending abilities breaks cannon and was stupid since bending came from the alignment of chakras which is not a water thing. If they had leaned hard into Amon pulling string in the background and maybe other non-benders learning how to take bending away resulting in an army that held a real threat to the world. The big thing Legion of Korra needed was focus, a single master villain with sympathetic motives would really helped.
I still have a question: How can Korra bend three elements as a toddler? No other avatar could do that; they all had to be told that they were the avatar. So why??
Really good video mate. I thoroughly think that your channel is underrated. I, however would suggest you to try to “match” the music in the background a bit more tho, just personal preference though. Just some constructive criticism, hope you don’t take it the wrong way.
So Aang didn't "give her" anything. Korra connected to her past life who showed her the power of Energy Bending, bending her inner energy to heal her connection to all of the Elements. Upon doing that, she's connected to every element and thus able to enter the avatar state.
Nah, not even a minute in you mention a terrible misconception that needs to stop being spread: it's not true Bryke were given only one season. As they mentioned in an interview, one season was greenlit, but even before the production began, Nickelodeon told them it might be several seasons if the first one does well. So Bryke could've easily leave the ending open. After all, they did the same thing in Book 4 anyway, since Korra hasn't restored her connection to the previous Avatars (and since she's still connected to Raava, we know it's possible). Afterwards the other three seasons were greenlit and paid upfront, but for whatever reason Bryke decided to work at all of them at once, instead of going season by season. That's where all the discrepancies come from. And, btw, it's also the reason why they're lying when they tell you Korrasami was planned since Book 2. In reality, if you know anything about production, they must've pooped their pants over how badly Book 2 performed, but there was no more time to change Book 3, so they retraced their steps and tried to find something that they knew would give them serious watching quotas - and what else would that be than a queer ship, am I right? So they quickly changed the ending, but didn't have enough time to edit out the Makorra scenes and had to pretend the three or four moments Korra and Asami spent alone were supposed to be romantic. If you binge-watch Book 4, you'll notice just how different the second half of the final episode is. Both in terms of the visual (wrongly called "animation" by most people) and story. So yeah, LoK could've been amazing, but that would've required a skilled head writer, whom Bryke chose to skip in their overconfidence in their own abilities. That's also why it's most likely a good thing they walked out on Netflix. If there's ever another Avatar show, we just have to watch it without expecting much, because Bryke can't deliver in the details that make a show stand out. That said, I absolute adore Korra. I just can't stand half-assed work and how badly Bryke treated their own characters.
Season 1 had way more problems than that. Amon's backstory was super lame, bloodbending being able to remove another's bending makes no sense, and the love traingle got pretty damn tedious. Korra being able to spontaneously airbend doesn't make any sense either. They never should have removed her bending at all. This show had a lot of potential; I was on board for at least half of the first season, but Christ, it turned into a mess.
Amon could have been so good too. Actually make him a non-bend tormented by benders. At his lowest point have him connect to a lion turtle as Aang did and be given sprit/energy bending to taken bending away from benders that were miss using it, but have him go too far with trying to remove all bending because of his traumatic past. Lean into the social inequality caused by bending and non-bending people in a society, and boom compelling civil war drama that could have stretched 5+ seasons and forces Korra to learn how to be the Avatar while trying to learn the elements she lost.
@@gjmottet I thought Korra should have taken multiple seasons to learn air bending. I was fine with her intuitively knowing 3 elements from the start, but there should have been a cost. It seemed like that was where they were going with the show, with how impatient and disconnected she was from her spirituality. Then, as she connects more and more with her Avatar state and past lives and the spirit world, learns not to be so impulsive and headstrong, she slowly learns air bending as well. Amon switching her bending abilities around made no sense, and completely undercut that. This show undercut its potential at every opportunity.
I love the show, I really wish Nickelodeon treated it better than it did. Mike and Bryan really tried their best with what they were given, but Nickelodeon just kept screwing them over at every turn. Such a tragedy.

It would have fixed a lot for sure
There is only one thing to be said about all of this: NICKELODEOOOOOOOOOOON
Lol
I Really like your point about how she doesn't need to get her bending back (and thus, getting that much-needed ego-check)
By losing her bending Korra was able to break her biggest attachment and learn the airbending philosophy of freedom through detachment

You should've named this video "One change could have made it perfect".
they could've done her regaining her bending better, too.

Fun fact : this is the second non star wars video that the gold man made
I love korra!!!!!!

Oh shoot… this ain’t Star Wars! Love it too
my love for Avatar is so strong
Hello there
I love Korra!
Unfortunately season 2 can’t be fixed as easily
unfortunately
There are TWO Saturns in the Avatar universe?
Cool video!
Just in case you are interested here's Korra's latest spotlight on the internet. ruclips.net/video/8gIQW2GqmcY/видео.html

@@thegoldman25 okay I understand. I deeply apologize.
