  • Here are some of my thoughts on how I would rewrite Book 2 of The Legend of Korra. It should be noted that this rewrite's core demographic is myself, so chances are you may have viewed the show differently. If that is the case, let me know what changes to The Legend of Korra you would have liked to see (if any).

    Hey! After a bit of a wait, here is my take on how I would rewrite Book 2 of The Legend of Korra. It took a little longer to make because a) it ended up being much longer than I first expected and b) we ended up going a much different direction in terms of visuals. Chadunda did all of the animations you see throughout this, so consider checking out his channel and giving him a lotta love.

      Koh should have the face of Jet.
      Now hear me out: After the mindwarp that he suffered and the supposed (definitely did happen) death by the hands of the agents of Ba Sing Sei, Jet wanders the spirit world truly lost as the two warring mental matrices fight for dominance.
      After Jet, the true mind, hears of a benevolent spirit that deals in many faces, he struggles his way to find it.
      Being led to believe it is the Mother of Faces, he is disappointed, shocked, and ultimately consumed by the Face Stealer, both Jet and and brainwashed matrix.
      An interesting situation would be that the spirit of Aang within Korra would become angry, and a chase could begin with Koh, and Korra could be lead to the fog earlier and a deep introspection could take place as she deals with the fallout of season 1.
      Just my thoughts.

    • @elin111
      @elin111 5 лет назад +188

      Amon's revolution not having any lasting consequences can be attributed to the fact that Korra was initially meant to be a one-season spinoff so the season 1 ending was written with the mindset that it was the end of the series. However when more seasons were greenlit suddenly they needed to figure out how to continue the story and clearly the script for season 2 suffered from it.

      Benders and Non Benders blame each other making the conflict even more dangerous as even with Amon and Tarrlok gone, they have won in the end along with Yakone. They conquered republic city, become the greatest blood bender masters ever and destroyed the avatar mentally and physically. The long term affects are apparent as they still win even if they are defeated and they will go down in history as some of the most dangerous villains the avatar world have ever faced more dangerous than Ozai and Azula.
      Korra had to deal with the guilt that because of her mistakes, many people lost their abilities forever, war is coming ever closer in republic city and it is more unbalanced due to Aang’s mistake of keeping Yakone alive. If that is not bad enough, she had to deal with her dad and her uncle facing against each other in a civil war. Like Book 2. That is very struggling for Korra to go through as she contemplated suicide but didn’t as she was held by Mako as she cried with the realization something worse if about to happen six months from now. I think it appeared brighter and more colorful in LOK than in ATLA bc of 1) the animation upgrade and 2) also just plainly bc they tried to show us different areas of the spirit world. The spirit world itself is huge, vast, and going with the logic of reflecting and resembling human emotions, there are going to be brighter, more positive zones to their darker counterparts that we see in ATLA (and we barely saw the spirit world in ATLA-- the ONE time we saw isn't gonna encompass and represent the entire spiritual realm). Even so, it wasn't always happy-go-lucky in LOK either. It was pretty diverse and there were creepy, dark parts of the spirit world shown in LOK as well. I really liked them branching and playing with the different tones of this new world. What we saw of it in ATLA was kinda depressing ngl, so I'm happy they expanded their color palette a bit.

    I feel like this is what the writers would have more than likely done had they had known they were going to get more seasons after book 1. Book 1 was originally going to be a stand alone series with a complete story but it was such a hit, Nickelodeon commissioned another season. It wasn’t until later that seasons 3 and 4 were picked up. Had the creators known the full extent of what they had to work with, the story would have been extended more and felt more fluid and transitional between books. At least with seasons 3 and 4, they could extend the story a bit cause they knew they had two more seasons to work with. Damn Nickelodeon fucking things up with the unknown. I wish they had just said you have four seasons, give us a masterpiece - and Korra would have been even better than it is. I still love Korra and am happy that the avatar series has seven seasons of pure fun, an incredible concept and story, and is something no one will ever forget.

      yeah, the biggest issue with book 2 is that book 1 was forced to have an ending to it since book 2 might be cancelled. It lead to 2 deus ex machina's(having one is fine if it's simply due to universal ignorance. Shooting someone in real life with a gun you found 2 seconds ago in a random bush isnt a deus ex machina either). The book 1 ending was unacceptable, it violated certain rules set in the universe already. The book 2 ending was kinda acceptable considering that the tree was literally a legend for thousands of years(so, universal ignorance) and Jinora was literally getting more and more powerful with her spiritual projection. Adding the fact that Harmonic Convergence makes any spiritual thing stronger in the first place, it isnt that much as a deus ex machina. It feels like that, sure, because it didnt follow Chekov's gun.

    This was very good! My favorite part was how you actually connected Book 2 to Book 1 by actually showing the consequences of Amon and the anti-bender movement.
    I thought it was terrible writing how the anti-bending moment just disappeared after Book 1 even though it had thousands of members. That kind of a social issue doesn't just go away! But you provided a logically conclusion to the problem where non-benders can actually see the value of benders to reform their own views.
    If I may make one more suggestion, it would be to make Unalaq _even more_ sympathetic. Don't make him evil, make him a traditionalist who is trying to solve conflict between the spirits and humans.
    The first part of your rewrite is perfect, he can have his good intentions carry all the way though and but then he is manipulated by Vatu (who promises to have all the solutions) once they meet. But stop Unalaq from going full on evil by holding Jenora hostage and trying to wipe of Republic City, that seems kind of out of character. And when he refuses to do these acts Vatu can cast him aside and become he main antagonist.
    It just feels like a more natural character arc, I don't think Unalaq would want to take action that directly endangers human lives and goes against the Avatar who is the bridge between worlds even if Unalaq thinks she has failed. She is his niece, that counts for something. Also, I don't think most spiritual beings are keen on committing evil. That feels like a violation of the goodwill spiritual tendencies generally have.
    Oh, and having Sokka's face get stolen? Dude, not cool. My man deserves a happy ending! Otherwise great job! I was pretty disappointed in Legend of Korra and you really did make Book 2 and the entire series leagues better than it actually is!

      They could quite easily do both the civil war and harmonic convergence thing since they were related. Having Unalaq to be evil would have made sense if he trained Korra due to Tonraq pushing him. I mean, why teach the most powerful person on the planet, the only thing that they could use to foil your plan willingly? Tonraq knew Unalaq was more spiritual. It would have made sense for Unalaq to have a bookcase filled with books about the spirit world and accidentally dropping a book(while "helping" Korra with the removal of evil spirits by lending her spiritual bending books) that had an image of Raava and Vaatu, having Vaatu's name or picture encircled, or even accidentally giving Korra a book about Vaatu with lots of things highlighted. Seeing as Korra isnt much into reading, she would need to find out that Unalaq was extremely worried giving away a wrong book. Add some red lotus signs in there, and voila, he would be a set-up to both book 3 while keeping "evil" intentions(even though they simply want to undo what Wan did and reverse the "natural" order that existed long ago). Add in some background conversations with Aiwei, who we later get to know in book 3 and most things would fall into place.

    Something else I would be really interested in seeing.
    As someone else mentioned, make Raava represent Order, and Vaatu represent chaos rather than just being good vs evil, but something else that would make them much more interesting: Make them actual manifestations of the spirit of the avatar, rather than the spirit which "created" the avatar (and dark avatar).
    Make it so that Wan was special because he was very close to spirits, and had managed to partially fuse himself with 4 spirits which each contributed a different element. Over time the spirits and Wan's actual spirit combined to form Raava AND Vaatu, in order to create a balance of both Order and Chaos, and also to explain why only the Avatar can energy bend. Due to the personality of the avatar, "Raava's" influence naturally became stronger as the world became more ordered, and the first people began to inhabit with spirits more and the original benders came to exist. The disruption of balance between the two halves of the Avatar's spirit also explains why it wasn't until Aang that an avatar was able to energy bend again, as the spirits were disrupted and their combined power weakened.
    This leads to the segregation which we see for thousands of years, and what eventually leads to the Fire Nation's ideal of supremacy over the inferior benders such as the Air Nomads. The tipping point of the Hundred Years War was that Raava had grown too strong in the avatar, and it had a lasting physical impact on the planet, everything had grown to be far too ordered and segregated.
    When the avatar disappears for 100 years, the world begins to fall into chaos. The Fire Nation takes advantage of the comet to increase their power and remove the Air Nomads from the world, removing one of the greatest spiritual links known to humans, and disrupting the balance of the elements. Vaatu, effectively dormant and weakened inside of Aang, slowly begins to grow stronger as the chaos in the world increases and the Air Nomads no longer exist and Aang experiences emotions which an Avatar up to that point had never experienced (the loss of his people and the disruption of balance). Unknowingly, this contributed to Aang's ultimate decision in the comics to ignore Roku and the previous Avatars as they state that it's Aang's responsibility to maintain the order and separation between the nations.
    This leads to Korra having more turbulent emotions, and further enforces her struggle as the Avatar, as she begins to learn that the true avatar is meant to embody far more than even any previous Avatar (aside from likely Wan) had understood.
    Then we get Amon. Now, instead of a ridiculously talented blood bender, Amon is actually an energy bender. Why? Because he was also incredibly spiritually connected, but was born a non-bender that actually had seen strife at the hands of violent benders. Amon goes to the spirit world and ends up joining a spirit that is capable of energy bending, and begins to remove bending from people in order to bring both order (all humans lose bending) and chaos (the balance of the nations and humanity is disrupted).
    Amon's energy bending is generally weaker than the Avatar's, as he's only using some of it's power, and not the power of Raava and Vaatu which the Avatar uses. Amon also justifies the use of energy bending because it isn't capable of the physical harm that other bending is capable of, but ironically damages and severs the spiritual connection of the individual. This creates an ironic and somewhat hypocritical juxtaposition of Amon's ideals, outlining him to be an interesting but flawed villain, rather than just a hypocrite who uses blood bending.
    Amon, however, is leaning far more towards chaos, which contributed even further to Vaatu growing stronger inside Korra. Korra continues to deal with inner turmoil, and struggles because she understands Amon and the non-benders point of view, but views herself and the position (and title) of Avatar to be critically important. When she begins to lose to Amon, he severs Korra's connections to the original bending spirits inside of her, and prevents her from reconnecting to the Earth, Fire, and Water spirits, however because she had yet to truly connect with the Air spirit he isn't capable of separating it.
    With the shards of the 3 spirits now "dormant" inside of her, much like Vaatu once was inside the previous avatars, Vaatu grows even stronger inside of Korra and she falls even further emotionally. By finally connecting with the previous incarnations of the avatar, now revealed to be the "memories" of Raava and Vaatu, she learns that she needs to reconnect with the original spirits which contributed parts of themselves to create the Avatar. She is then forced on her journey to find the places which these spirits are physically constrained to (as it's explain in ATLA that spirits are confined to certain areas on the planet for each individual spirit).
    Then, Unalaqq reveals essentially that he wishes to free these constraints on spirits, as he believes that by restricting spirits, much like the benders of the previous nations were restricted, the job of the avatar isn't truly being accomplished. This continues on with spirits being freed, Harmonic Convergence, and what not. Unalaqq isn't really a villain this time around though, but just someone with half-baked knowledge of the spirit world that doesn't appreciate the Southern Tribe's culture, and rather than a fight, he is changed (along with Korra's dad and the southern tribe) through ideological conflict rather than physical conflict. Instead of having an over-arching villain, this season just outlines the struggles of Korra as she begins to understand what it truly means to be the Avatar.

      The big question is how the air bison, dragons, moon, badgermoles, and lionturtles fit into this.
      Because ATLA said the original source of those bending powers were these creatures, by saying the real origin was the spirits, you kind of undermine ATLA
      "Make it so that Wan was special because he was very close to spirits, and had managed to partially fuse himself with 4 spirits which each contributed a different element."
      -> How did the Air Bison, Dragons, Badgermoles, Lionturtles, and Moon fit into this?
      Are the creatures the original source of bending, or the spirits?
      Trying to fix this:
      It could be the precursor the the air bison or dragons were just normal bison or giant flying snakes, but when they fused with the spirits they became the dragons and air bison
      -> this raises futher questions of how the avatar got their bending, so idk
      "Over time the spirits and Wan's actual spirit combined to form Raava AND Vaatu, in order to create a balance of both Order and Chaos, and also to explain why only the Avatar can energy bend. "
      -> but the avatar learned how to energy bend from the lionturtle. Why is the source of energybending now Raava and Vaatu?
      "Amon goes to the spirit world and ends up joining a spirit that is capable of energy bending, and begins to remove bending from people"
      -> Again, ignores the lionturtles
      Ok i've spent way too much time trying to harmonize the ideas that bending came from spirits and/or creatures in ATLA, but i cant get anything im remotely satisfied with, so i'll stick to nitpicking.
      I did find the duality of order and chaos inside the Avatar to be somewhat interesting though. If thats true, i wonder if Avatar Kuruk being a "go with the flow" kind of avatar interacted with his chaotic side more.

      This isn't my idea, this is actually canon now. Canonically, the "original benders" were not the source of bending, just the ones that taught it.

    I really wish they'd gone into the specific cultural/spiritual traditions of the two water tribes, because I think it's pretty much inconceivable that they had the exact same culture pre-100yr war. Unalaq's problem would be that he's trying to enforce *northern* traditions rather than bringing back southern ones. They could even keep Wan Shi Tong in, as Korra & Jinora could've tried to look in his library for information abt the south's culture.
    Idk, the answer to "how to bring back spirituality in the south" seemed so obvious to me that it ended up preventing me from enjoying the season, 'cause I didn't get why everyone jumped straight to spirit portals & Harmonic Convergence when the answer was so simple.

    This is brilliant, and I have one further suggestion that solves a problem I had with book 2.
    In my version, Rava isn't good and Vatu isn't evil. Rather, Rava is the spirit of order and Vatu is the spirit of chaos. Rava, and by extension the avatar, is the force of order and seperation. Rava strives for seperation to keep order and peace: seperation of the 4 elements, the 4 nations and seperation of the mortal and spirit worlds, with only Rava's Avatar as the bridge between them all. Rava views seperation as neccesary for peace. This ties in well to Roku's motivation in "The Avatar and the Firelord". Sozin wanted to break down national boundaries to spread the fire nation's influence. This goes against the Avatar's job as keeper of order, as if Sozin succeeded it would start a war that would kill thousands. Vatu on the otherhand is the spirit of chaos and strives to break down all barriers to allow all forces to interact without rules or boundaries. Vatu sees war as a neccesary consequence of true freedom. Together they act as 2 extremes that only together can create balance. In case you can't tell this is based on the concept of Yin and Yang
    You can then add on some lore. For example, there was a war between Rava and Vatu. Some spirits were on the side of Rava, some on the side of Vatu and some remained neutral. Vatu became extremely powerful and influential in the spirit world. Some spirits who feared Vatu the most migrated to the mortal world, such as Twi and La (moon and ocean) and Wan Shi Tong (it's easier to gather knowledge surrounded by peace). Rava herself fused her spirit form with that of a mortal, creating the Avatar, Rava's bridge between the worlds to enforce their seperation. Eventually, Rava succeeded in sealing off the spirit world from the mortal one, but not before Vatu had made almost the entirety of the spirit world into logicless chaos. Vatu can still influence the mortal world as Rava can with the spirit, but neither can take control while the other is in that realm. It wasn't until the Avatar disappeared for 100 years that Vatu was able to influence the breakdown of division in the mortal world via the 100 year war. The Avatar eventually returned and restored balance but not before the damage had already been done. Now we have the United Republic, where people from all nations and elements mix freely. This is what's allowing Vatu to gain more power in Korra along with the harmonic convergance, and now he's turning his sights to destroying the barrier between the mortal and spirit worlds, finally allowing him to bring chaos to both realms.
    Everything else plays out as you said, but Korra's motivation for defeating Vatu is to preserve their current way of life and to prevent inevitable war between man and spirits alike. Not because Rava is good and Vatu is evil.
    Edit: also Vatu's goal of chaos would lead in very nicely to Zaheer's anarchism in book 3

Book 2 just didn't have the space for both the spirit and civil war storylines, and so neither ended up being fully explored. I think focusing on the spiritual side is the right call, since that's supposed to be a major part of Korra's character arc but isn't given the space or structure that it needs.

    my favorite thing about this is that the avatar state isn’t over used. in the original show, the avatar state was used so much in the season that at the end of the season, Korra needed to turn into a blue giant because the writers realized that the avatar state wasn’t as important to korra as it was to aang and every other avatar. Treating the avatar state as a toy was the biggest problem I had with the show

    • @zaynstyles6917
      @zaynstyles6917 3 года назад +2

      I disagree, the avatar state was still relevant and important in LOK. I thought the blue giant was cool-- she connected with her cosmic self, similar to how Aang connected with the ocean spirit in ATLA. I don't think the Avatar-state was used toyishly as Korra's avatar state is strong as hell and used in most of her major battles and her best moments. Her feats with the avatar state are still impressive. It's fine being attached to Aang's journey and how he used the avatar state, but I'm personally happy that LOK decided not to reiterate that journey with Korra. It would've been repetitive and would've set her up for more hate, and would've broke the theme with Aang and Korra being each other's foils and dealing with different issues.

    • @G3NTOK1
      @G3NTOK1 3 года назад +3

      @@zaynstyles6917 The cosmic stuff seemed like a coverup on the writers part because if anyone can do that then even nonbenders would be strong and people who wanted to do good wouldn't really need the avatar. Aang fused with moon? or whatever it was and that's how he grew, it makes sense cause he traveled to the spirit world to gain knowledge I believe. Its also overlooked on Aang's part because he was already spiritual to begin with. Korra was not and although they tried showing how she "was spiritual" and how she "got stronger" we never see her actual development. Everything came easy to her but we never see her work to improve, they show like one scene of her working on whatever it is and then she just gets it. It doesn't seem like much either because although they gave her these things she is still pretty weak and can't even defeat her enemies(minus Kuvira because honestly anyone just about can beat Kuvira. I feel like people like Mako and Bolin would actually struggle with her and that's about it.)

Amon and the Equalists felt like a very powerful and organized threat, as well as both them and Zaheer feeling like they were extremely smart and always one step ahead of team Korra. Kuvira's military was powerful and she was a genuinely good leader despite being a dictator. Unalaq was... kinda just there? Honestly, this retelling was gold. I always felt each season of LoK was rushed, especially season 2. Then again, with the pressure that Nickelodeon put on the writers and the limited amount of episodes, Korra and the characters never really caught a break and the plot's villainy had to advance haphazardly without any hard thoughts on the consequences or implications on future episodes and the past canon. I'm glad you made Unalaq a misguided religious fanatic instead of a satanist and gave Team Avatar and Aang's children a chance to develop their relationship. What LoK seriously lacked were "filler" episodes that didn't focus too much on the A-plot that still loomed over, which would give each season a slower and more climactic pace. Even Aang and his friends managed to have some full-episode fun before big battles because of the episode count and they were in the middle of a war!!!!

Their existence just seems to over-simplify a world of mystery, confine morality, and convolute what it means to be the avatar, and bending as a whole. I love most of the changes you made, however I'd probably also scrap the entire concept of Raava and Vaatu

      I agree with you and I don't, at the same time. I don't like at all the concept of Vaatu and Raava, because it narrows the show's morality to "bad and good". This kind of morality is the exact oposite of what they tried in ATLA and, even more, in LoK. Presenting the antibending revolution and Zaheer's anarchist believes were really interesting and fitting in the modern world of Korra, for my taste. That being said, I think Raava and Vaatu could exist in the show without over-simpliflying it and making it less compelling. How? Simple: treat them as peace and chaos, light and dark. Wan fuses with Raava because chaos is much more likely to be spread than peace and, to keep balance, it must actively be controlled. With this simple change, Wan's fusion with Raava, and therefore the creation of the Avatar, make much more sense, and the concept of why the Avatar is so powerful and the reason of the existence of the Avatar State and why the Avatar can reincarnate actually feels earned and positively contributes to the world-building.

    make vaatu not only the spirit of darkness but also chaos while raava is the order one. but here is the thing, Raava is the spirit of order that kept the world stagnant for ten thousand years without creativity or change as is the order. while vatuu is creativity, change, imagination etc.

But... this somehow upsets the order of the world.... because (no conflict creates other problems).... somehow.... and we are left realizing that in order to have life and death there must be an inner conflict in order to keep people/spirits alive and motivated.

    I feel like it would’ve been interesting to have had Kuvira in season two because Lin wouldn’t have had her metal bending or even her Earth bending, so she would’ve had a call on somebody to help, so she calls on her sister and her sister sends Kuvira. This would lead into the knowledge that Lin has a sister, and by her sister not even showing up, and is sending someone else in her place, you can tell that there’s bad blood between the two of them, while simultaneously showing that Su cares about Lin.
    Personally, I think of the establishment of a Kuvira in a small power such as Republic city could’ve led to her developmental skills as a leader and will push the idea of her being a dictator even more as it would have already been set up. I also think that before they go and travel to help Korra regain her elements, Kuvira and Asami could’ve interacted more which could’ve led to a Kusami relationship (imo they would’ve worked and I find that with a few minor changes they could’ve ended up together, given how much they actually have in common, if interested I could explain it). I also think that we could’ve kept Makorra as a relationship, and have them get together in S3 officially, take a break in S4, then at S4 they are officially together. while I am personally a big fan of Mako and Korra just because of what they mean to each other, I definitely think that they need to be developed a bit more to fully get the you know, landscape of it done properly. Like we want to see if their relationship holds up post revolutionary war and not just “we might die, tensions are high, I love you”. We need to test the relationship a bit more, and I think that by not getting them together right away but still leading to an almost will they, won’t they slow burn, really makes them getting together in the end that much better.
    Last thing, I would’ve made Mako a member of the white lotus, because whether or not he is with Korra, he promises to always fight by her side and to always be there for her. It would’ve been almost full circle for him to become a white lotus member, and would definitely add to his self-sacrifice type of personality.

I feel that with this sudden increase of technology that’s kind of shoved in there it just doesn’t fit with avatar.

    15:28 I hate how they did Raava and Vaatu in the series. The Avatar world wasn’t really one that needed to have god level “light spirit” and a “dark spirit” divine dualistic split. Because Balance wasn’t something that the spirits directly were responsible for. It’s what they were effected by, and had to exert effort to alter just like humans. And there’s the simplistic one is good one is evil view, when that’s really also not what most of the philosophy of the show is about. One of the things I firmly believe the show should’ve done is display them rather as Light and Dark, but Order and Chaos. In Raava’s time, people like Chin the Conquerer and the Fire Nation were allowed to exist, oppressive regimes who existed in “order”. Then show what bad Vaatu does.

    I really like how you tied Korra's arc into ATLA and the lore we learned in that show. I think it would be even cooler if you could parallel Bolin's arc about not being able to metal bend and learning to lava bend, to how Sokka felt sad that everyone around him was a bender and yet he turned out to be a great swordsman. Personally, I'm not a fan of Vaatu in general. I like how you fix Unalaq though. He should be convinced what he's doing is right. I think we could go even further by really embracing the chaos aspect of Vaatu. He really is just evil for the sake of evil. But imagine if Korra had to learn to accept that Chaos is a natural part of the universe. So instead of just killing Vaatu with some glowing spirit water, she learned to live with Vaatu instead. It'd definitely change the theme of the show a bit, but just a thought. Anyways, great video as always.

  • @SolidGoldHedgehog

    Rant incoming:
    I always hated Wan's origin story, a) because it was too simplistic, and b) because it completely retconned the more interesting and natural bending history established in ATLA. And yeah, Korra achieving the avatar state in book 1 was too easy, whereas doing so inches from death is less so, and fits with established lore (the avatar state acting like a defence mechanism as in ATLA). I also hated the fact that she was cut off from her past lives; that was what made the avatar THE AVATAR. They were deified because they were above mere mortals; they were reincarnated, bestowed with godly power, and the wisdom and knowledge of a thousand lifetimes. I understand the direction that the show took, what with her being more disrespected (in part due to the emergence of increasingly advanced technology), but I feel the show lacked the reverence for her shown to Aang (and he got a lot of flack for abandoning the world for a century).
    ATLA was much more natural, in part because it was based on a wide range of real-world cultures and traditions (such as the method of identifying the avatar used by the Air nomads, similar to that of identifying the Dalai Lama) - by creating the vatu-rava thing from scratch it felt, well, more artificial, and too hollow. Don't even get me started on the whole "good vs evil", "light vs darkness" spiel. The whole point of the avatar is to bring balance: having rava, 1 half of a whole dominate over the other half, is not balance. It's the same problem as with the Jedi's idea of balance - only the light side of the force, as opposed to actual balanced grey Jedis. Book 2 even touches on this, saying that rava cannot exist without vatu just as he cannot exist without her. This imbalance could have been avoided had they just not chosen to go there, story wise.
    Another gripe I have is that the different nations and cultures in avatar are fully built around their respective elements. All parts of society, culture, and infrastructure are shaped by it. But in Wan's creation story you see the different cultures already somewhat formed. And yes, you could argue that the fact that they have access to certain elements (when outside their cities) could alter their mindsets somewhat, but it's not the same as constantly having access to it, inside the cities (shown to prohibited - at least within Wan's city). Bending doesn't seem tied to martial arts either (again, very culturally ingrained). They just bend, but without form. Yes that could have evolved later, and I'm not necessarily arguing that there's no logic to the way things played out, but I just think they could have gone a different route, closer to that of ATLA.
    There is so much more I could rant about, but I can't really be asked at the moment.

    • @tristanneal9552
      @tristanneal9552 5 лет назад +45

      I agree with most of what you said, but they really didn’t retcon the origin of bending. If you watch Beginnings, you specifically see them include a dragon teaching Wan firebending and immediately after people talk about how he uses the fire like an extension of himself. The lion turtles bestowed the supernatural ability to wield elements, while the original benders (dragons, bisons, badgermoles and the moon) taught them how to use it. Honestly it makes a lot more sense and explains the presence of non-benders, rather than the original idea that “some waterbenders watched the tide and then spontaneously learned to manipulate it except for some people who couldn’t I guess”. The only real problem with this comes from the story of Omashu, which admittedly either needs to be retconned or placed aside as just a myth.

    5 minutes into this and all I can conclude is that haste makes waste. Your ideas are really spot on and I would encourage you to seek more opportunities to develop your own writing as you seem to have a really solid aptitude for it. These are some really good ideas. I understand you have the benefit of hindsight, your ability to dissect a story and articulate positive changes shows a real aptitude for writing. I realize that I'm late to the party so to speak, but I only encountered Legend of Korra recently. Great analysis, a wonderful video essay so to speak. EDIT: Your comments on Tenzen at approx 10:48 with him struggling to deal with the fact that Ginora is a better spiritual mentor than he is himself is so spot on! It's a powerful narrative point and insightful as hell. Great work.

    See, when I thought up a rewrite, I kept too much similar. This is a truly interesting re-imagining that really makes the series as a whole better.
    Fantastic job, my dude.

    This and the Star Wars prequel rewrites have given me so much to think about! I love it
    I would include some of Hello Future Me's rewrites of Beginnings into here as well, including the idea that the Avatar has both Raava and Vaatu inside of themselves

    I haven't watch TLOK in a long while, but this is a general question, to be honest: but aren't the two rugs supposed to be like two sides of a coin? Like, unlike Western interpretations, in Eastern mythos, light and dark is less "good and evil" and more "positive and negative" aspects? So, why is it that the world remains in balance while Vaatu is locked up somewhere, while Raava is out being the Avatar spirit or whatever? Again, a general question that I'd been thinking about while watching different Korra videos.
    That said, I really like the changes you made. I felt that many of the characters needed more solid character development (esp. Tenzin and Bolin) that they really didn't get in the series, so I'm all for this.

      I think this is certainly fair. I saw someone suggesting that it would be an interesting twist if Korra decided to take on Vaatu's darkness as a way to have balance, which I think could be interesting.

      @@razbuten Regarding the possibility of Korra taking on Vaatu´s darkness, I remember that after watching the end of season 2 of LoK I was left wondering: If Raava and Vaatu were supposed to be 2 sides fighting to keep balance; how come the solution of the main problem (and the resolution of the season) is "killing" Vaatu? And on that note, I also ponder does this mean that a tiny Vaatu is growing inside Raava and that eventually there could be an actual "evil" (hate the term, but lets use it for brevity´s sake) Avatar?

      What about if two spirits would reside in Korra? Anyway the entire idea of those Rava and Vatu makes no sense from the story-line perspective.
      1) As you reach to the source they are mixed up representation of ying and yang from Asian mythology with roles reversed.
      2) From the very first episode of ATLA it is established the we are talking about the spirit of the world able to master all four elements.
      3) It needs to have more sophisticated explanation of bending. Because lets be honest even a woman in the kitchen can bend four elements, same for the smith, potter and many other professions. This actually can be a theme from another TV series about the origin of the bending.
      4) The harmonic convergence can be actual explanation of the bending origin without this evil spirit stuff. Once every 10000 years the spirit give bending to those worthy one or something.

      Imagine if the Avatar took on Vaatu's darkness and it brought he/she to actually have no qualms about killing another person if it's completelt necessary, despite upbringing (like Aang being an Air Nomad and therefore pacifist.)

      @@lubystkaolamonola529 Only on Nick's website was it stated that the Avatar was the spirit of the world. Apparently it was in the story bible, but supposedly Bryke decided against it while in production. Or so they've said. We never hear any mention or either a Raava like origin or spirit of the planet origin in the original ATLA... but I sure liked the spirit of the planet idea much better! All of the fans assumed it was canon by the way, since it was on the website. But apparently the Nick website people simply didn't know... Am not really a fan of your last idea...
