This tutorial was really helpful. I received the small template in a quilt box a long time ago and never used it until today. Your video saved me a lot of time. Thank you!
Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial and that it was helpful for you! Such a fun and stunning project this one is! We appreciate your support and comment! - Abby
I have found on the bigger cozies it is better to also sew the fabric n batting together by making 2 more lines of stitching from one dart to the other dart on each side (making another X). It helps to hold the layers in place when they r washed.
So after you sew the X on the fabrics with the batting, and sew the darts, and then you sew the bowls together, turn, and top stitch your sewing two lines down each side of the X? To me that's what I THINK your saying if I'm right? It would make sense to do that so the bowls stay together when washing... I am a visual person, so that's what I think your saying...if I'm wrong please let me know what you mean? Thank you!
I like to use the bowl cozy for cold items, too. Holding an ice cream bowl in your hand is one of those! Also, salads ... the large cozy helps to retain the chill of the salad longer.
I has bought me some of these templates and I said I need to learn how to use them so I came across your video and thank you I now know how to use them, but I know it's got be 100% cotton and thread
These would be beautiful with a stripe or check on one side and a floral on the other - the upcoming Dwell line would have lots of options, as would Rosewood Lane! So cute! A Christmas stripe with a candy or cocoa print on the opposite side....so many options!
Just today I saw the cutest Halloween fabric somewhere. I think it is Too Cute to Spook by Me and My Sister. So cute and non-scary! Just adorable! I must get some of it and make some of these cozies for fall and Halloween! I have made some cozies without a template but I can see that the template would make it happen so much easier! And much more accurately. Thanks Jen for sharing this. Looks like a super great project for any season of the year or any decor! Perfect!
Boy do I need these templates! I bought the flexible template that you trace onto your fabric and batting last year, and this looks so much more easier, and less work! I love that it comes with two templates for a Large and a small bowl too! I will be buying one next month for sure! Now I wished I had waited for this! This brought me a little cheer since I had to put my black cat down yesterday morning because he had cancer, and wasn't doing well... Sewing keeps my mind off stuff, and is a great stress release, so having these will keep me from crying thinking about my black kitty...that was his name my daughter had given him "Black Kitty"...RIP buddy I love you
it would be easier to top stitch if you trimmed the batting before you turned it right side out. Even just one thickness of the batting would work. HTH
Love the fabric choice! Have started making the small cozy for gifts. I trim off the edges with pinking sheers before turning for less bulk. The points where the two darts come together is very thick and although I’m using a 14 needle, and go very slow, I’ve still broken three needles at these points. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks 😊
Hi Kathie - How long has it been since you've had your machine serviced? There's a slight possibility that your shaft may be off a bit (not noticeable if working with thinner fabrics). If you know this isn't a problem, we would suggest possible handcranking the needle when you come to this portion of the project, through those particularly thick stitched. Hope this helps! -Michelle
You were mentioning that you could use the precut batting for both the regular and large size bowls but isn’t the regular precut batting cut at 10.5 inches while the regular template in this set says 11 inch. Would the fabric then be half an inch larger than the batting? I’ve just ordered the templates but I do have some of the precut batting in my stash and hope I can use them with these templates.
Hi Pauline. The precut batting should be compatible with the templates. I believe the size disparity you pointed out is between the cut size and the fished size. I hope this info helps you out! -Bethany
You used your own batting to make this bowl, your description shows pre cut batting, I would like to know the name of the batting you used (and cut yourself) for this project. Thanks

I just love this project. I do have question about the batting. Do you sell the batting that can be cut using the Creative Grids template? I have quite a few bowl cozies that I want to make for the holidays. Thank you
I make a load of these cozies as fundraising items for a cat rescue. It's important to use 100% cotton batting - if it has polyester scrim it can melt in the microwave. I have found 2 brands which work really well - one is Pellon All-Cotton Batting and the other is Warm 100 by the Warm Company. The Pellon one does come is quite small quantities - although I tend to order King-size quilt bats for my mass production!

It depends on which cozy size you're creating - the larger bowl cozy measures approximately 8.5" in diameter, and the smaller size should fit a standard size cereal bowl. Hope that helps! -Michelle
Is one rotary cutter better than any others? I was complaining to my friend that the one I have wouldn't cut warm butter. She said that hers is the same way. How do you choose a rotary cutter that will actually cut through the fabric? Anybody?
Hi Lorie - We definitely have our preferences here, and I would recommend that you check out the cutters we offer & maybe look up some reviews on them: www.shabbyfabrics.com/c4180 Additionally, you do need to be sure that you're changing out your blade when needed, because a dull one will not cut well and is a safety concern. -Michelle
Yes, one suggestion would be to try to prewash your fabric AND batting to help eliminate shrinking when washing the cozies for the first time. However, our makers have not pre-washed batting. If you'd like to attempt to prewashing your batting before you cut it for the cozy, our suggestion would be to soak the batting in hot water, wring it out, and lay flat to dry (without stretching), and then press flat once dry (without stretching). We just used the same cotton batting that we use for our sample quilts. The thickness of the batting used doesn't matter with this project, as long as it is 100% cotton. Hope this helps :) -Michelle
