  • A 2016 Kawasaki ZX10r goes wide striking a recently installed "No Stopping" sign. Fortunately only the bike hit the sign, the rider only had minor road rash.
    A California Highway Patrol happened to be sitting on the curve when the incident occurred. A report was made but the rider was not cited.

    This Park sign describes "the Snake"
    "You are standing at the top of curves that road enthusiasts affectionately call "The Snake". Over the years Mulholland Highway has tested the merits of cars from Duesenbergs to Teslas. This particular stretch of road is a mecca for motorcyclists. It's sharp turns offer an adrenaline rush and a chance for fun, fame and often folly.
    To your left is "Edwards Corner". It was named after the late Ed Savko, long-time owner of the Rock Store., a popular road house just down the hill. Hundreds of riders have (----) on this challenging 180- degree curve, perhaps showing off for spectators, who often gather here. Other succumb safely to the charm of "The Snake." "
    Thanks for watching!

    I took a look at the description and saw that the rider wasn't cited. It's good to see he managed to wipe out in front of an honest officer. Mistakes happen. That's just a part of being human. I'm glad to see this cop was able to resonate with the fact that not all accidents occur from reckless driving. Ride safe, man.

      @heartfang21 7 лет назад +1

      theres a part of the driving written test out here that sets you up for blaming conditions, when the answer is poor driving skills.
      The operator of the bike took the turn too wide. that's his fault he couldnt stay on the road. It was an accident, yes, but you're supposed to be aware of potential risks ad know how to corner at what speed. it isn't the sign's fault, and as a rider myself, if someone gets taken out by that sign, at least it wont involve another car.

      To be fair it's basically in the worst spot possible.

  • @fat_biker
    @fat_biker 7 лет назад +165

    So, there's a spot, a single location, that is on record as the site of tens or possibly even hundreds of motorcycle crashes or running wide incidents over the past few years, a huge number of them actually videod and archived on the internet, and somebody decides that out of all the places along that road where they could place that no stopping sign, that one spot which has so far allowed most of its crashees to walk or limp away would be the perfect spot.
    I'm no soothsayer, but I preict one or more on camera fatalities and serious injuries as a result of that pole. Whoever decided to put it there is either stupid & reckless, or an actively malicious troll, and they should be personally held accountable for manslaughter when the inevitable and easily predictable happens.

      Thats our city council for you

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 7 лет назад +4

      The concept was to dissuade riders from going too fast through the curve. 'Hey, there's a sign there, if I go to fast and crash, I'll hit it, maybe I need to slow down.' Of course, that isn't going to work. Actually, it was probably some unionized city worker who got the job, and he ended up saying 'Oh, here's a good place, we'll put it here. Doesn't matter.'

    • @XXXDeadhead
      @XXXDeadhead 7 лет назад +11

      city council should consider the safety of inexperienced riders going beyond their limits on public roads? majority of states don't even have a helmet law.... seems a sign is the least of our safety worries.

    • @degnaw
      @degnaw 7 лет назад +3

      I mean, it makes sense to ban stopping/parking in a spot where hundreds of motorcycle crashes have occurred. Of course, the implementation has some room for improvement.

    • @XXXDeadhead
      @XXXDeadhead 7 лет назад +1

      degnaw I agree, the signs are not needed if a smashed up motorcycle is lying there at all times. But, having been there and spoken with RNickey on this topic - there are not hundreds of crashes to tend with... maybe a good 60 or so, but most are from amateurs riding at intermediate speeds.

      So I guess all that tax payers money they splash out putting up guard rails is wasted, right? I mean, that long guard rail before the sign that stops cars & bikes going over a cliff when they crash? That's expensive hardware. Get rid of it, if people run wide there and off the road then who cares if they plummet to a horrible agonising death, it's entirely their own fault...

    • @danewilbanks1
      @danewilbanks1 7 лет назад +3

      Ken Haylock Haha You can't even compare these two things. First off, they are fundamentally different. You're comparing a proven life saving device to a no parking sign. We can agree the sign isn't really in the most optimal place, and I think it definitely needs a different placement.

    What always boggles my mind, and I'll never fully grasp is how even in a seemingly slow and easy crash... how easily the bike jumps and hops like it weighs _nothing!_
    Bikes are super heavy, and his just popped and spun around that pole like it was a bicycle! I saw a simple low speed high side where a guys bike flipped twice sideways like a barrel roll! He couldn't have been doing more than 20mph and his bike just FLEW!
    That is so scary.
    The energy involved in even a tiny crash is terrifying.

      Michael Bruns Its not about him being fixated on the cop its just that they sometimes see a cop and have mini freak out leading to them crashing. Mostly from applying brake.

    On the street you should only ride at 60% of your skill level so you always have something in reserve, not 100%, it's not safe.

    • @hellario2
      @hellario2 7 лет назад +6

      60% is a bit too safe though. if your sport bike can lean over 55 degrees, 60% of that is a 33 degree angle, which is less than what a scooter can do lol.
      70-80% lets you have fun and learn proper technique with enough in reserve to give you a chance to react if something goes wrong.

    • @Red5

      Red 5 yeah, skill level has nothing to do with it. there are only things that bike can and can't do. the only thing you need to know is how not to ask the bike to do what it can't and that has everything to do with its capacity.

    • @randinmotion6622
      @randinmotion6622 7 лет назад +3

      Night Rider not the way I'd handle it. I think it's better to maintain throttle or lightly accelerate, look well into the corner, (counter)steer even tighter into corner, and pray there is enough lean left. Lots of pucker (not for the faint of heart) but most make it. The guy in the video would have had to react a lot sooner to save it. Once he was on dirt it was too late.

    • @d1sturb3d119
      @d1sturb3d119 7 лет назад +17

      Hey night rider! Rolling off the throttle causes weight transfer to the front tire causing the bike to stand and go even wider. Never roll off. Stay on the throttle and countersteer even more. MSF 101. Thats a pretty common survival reaction.

    • @nightrider3067
      @nightrider3067 7 лет назад

      vidurc Ive done it many times before.Roll off less centrifugal force keep your target.It will go wider if you target fixate maybe. Saved my buns more than a few times
