      blthetube1 in my area we have 84, Skyline, Highway 9 and several connecting roads that are tons of fun. I always take it easy on the way out. Gives me an idea of road conditions (gravel, debris from trees, etc, oil, special events, law enforcement) and then have a spirited ride back. Nothing crazy because it’s the street, but fast enough for it to be fun.

    Interesting fact, back in the '80's, CHP didn't use radar. Instead, they had an officer at the tallest point, estimating speed and radioing units to stop the offender. I was in court watching 2 motorcyclist complaining that the officer didn't use a mechanical device to clock them. The Judge asked the officer, "How accurate are you in speed estimates?". The officer said, "Plus or minus 2 mph". They Judge said guilty.

    • @jchors2947
      @jchors2947 4 года назад +7

      The CHP had radar in the 80's! The method you're thinking of is time-to-distance. An example would be our fixed wing aircraft. The pilot will time a vehicle from hashmark to hashmark, usually a distance of one mile. He then uses a chart to determine your average speed and call a ground unit ahead to intercept speeders.

    • @vxe6vxe6
      @vxe6vxe6 Год назад

      Actually.....The CHP was never explicitly barred by law from using radar, but the Legislature never provided money to buy the equipment and, under a long-standing agreement with the governor’s office, the CHP did not use it. The CHP did have radar equipped vehicles, they were clearly marked as such. Most of those radar units were bought with federal grant money by the CHP. In 1999, Under dumbass Gray Davis, California started to fund the CHP for radar use to include motorcycles.

      Because its an open road you might find that the speed limit is quite high. There may be signs with recommended speeds for the corners but they arent actual speed limits. So the bikes may not have been speeding.

    • @easyrhino7277
      @easyrhino7277 6 лет назад +4

      If they're on a big patrol day (pretty rare) they'll have a spotter who takes the speed, description of the bike (or group of bikes) n relay it to a police checkpoint near the end... you can out run or make it look like you can outrun cops here... but radio is always faster... would suck for u to get a ticket being they only do this once in a blue moon.. but its basically fast food with speeding tickets :P

      My father finished his last 10 years of 35 on the bikes as a cop. He rode a very large Harley , decked out with the highway bars, gear and 3 large saddle bags. The bike was extremely heavy, and they would get very hot and uncomfortable to ride, the entire squad bitched for months to get oil coolers. In the summer you just can't put the protection on, remember these guys have knee boots, 2 belts one for the pants the other for the handgun, a few mags, tazer, pepper spray, 2 sets of cuffs and a radio, moving up they have a shirt with patches, badge, pockets with any number of things and under that a bullet proof vest with a armor and or ceramic heart plate. Top that off with a skull cap like helmet and you have one hell of a body to gear ratio. . Only when it got colder did the leather bike jackets come out. You really don't see man fat cops on bikes, you have to be in shape to handle them.

      I don't know about the BMWs but your hard pressed to get a fully loaded Harley over 95mph.

      Father and I were washing his bike once in the driveway, for whatever reason it started going over, we both saved it, but we were not expecting it and I sure as shit didnt expect that much weight.
      He also used to race Harley's when he was younger, he even built a few from the ground up.

      Fair enough Jrock. My comment originally was sparked by the comment about not enough appreciation for them. Soon as they stop hiding behind bushes like pussy cowards and harassing the people who pay their salaries I'll show them some appreciation. I've never been to Mulholland but I'd guess one day they target cars crossing the line, other days they go after bikes. Or maybe they're equal opportunity ticket writers and this video is edited to show only the centerline car violations. All I'm saying is, as bikers, lets not sign up for the CHP fan club just yet.

    • @soccerjonesy

      Look at 1:24 and watch that black coupe and motorcycle. If a cop sat on ever turn in an obvious spot for people coming up to see them, they'll go slow then do that dangerous stunt on every other turn. By getting them after and giving them a ticket for going over that double yellow line (which by law, you cannot go over), they're at least learning a lesson to not do it again.
      I ride a motorcycle. I'd prefer people learning their lessons on blind turns first, then to stop doing that stunt rather than do it whenever it's safe from cops and accidentally hit me head on and I die from their stupidity. I wouldn't even be mad, I died from something I love, my killer goes to jail. But to be considerate to both parties, I'd prefer them with a ticket.

    • @tartredarrow
      @tartredarrow 10 лет назад +1

      soccerjonesy That's a great thought, except it has nothing to do with reality. Have you seen the video posted on this very channel, where a guy (who by the way was obeying all traffic laws) grabbed the brakes when he saw the cop and laid it down?
      And blue flashing lights cause accidents all the time, distracting drivers even to the point where they'll drive into the lights! Once again, it has nothing to do with public safety, it's all about police presence and law enforcement.

    • @soccerjonesy
      @soccerjonesy 10 лет назад +2

      tartredarrow I live in L.A. and I ride on Mulholland often. I speed and would prefer no getting a speeding ticket here, but I'm grateful of the cops here. Most of the time, around a corner bend, they're not watching speed as there isn't enough time to clock the speed of someone such a short distance away. So as a rider, I know that I should expect cops around corners, especially this snake bend here, and thus, not lose control because I spot the cop.
      It's the people doing something illegal without any knowledge of the danger of this road that cause stupid stunts when they spot cops. The cops are pulling you over for speeding (if they catch you from a distance), going over double yellow lines, and drifting.
      Trust me, the accidents that happen on this road are brutal, I've seen people knocked off the road into the small ravine/cliff to the side. With cops so close, many lives have been saved, whether you like them or not.

    • @tartredarrow
      @tartredarrow 10 лет назад

      soccerjonesy You missed the point. If the cops set up BEFORE the corner, no one would go over in the first place.
      Moreover, I've never scene a cop do any first aid. People shot and bleeding out on the ground and they just stand there and not even call a paramedic.

    Why are there no modern guardrails on this road? :-/ In Germany we have dual guardrails with an additional underride guard on dangerous curves. Especially on roads which are frequently used by bikers. The Rider that was down the slope could have been saved by that...
    I allways wonder, that no one has ever been beheaded by the guardrail @1:07... When you're sliding underneath this guardrail feet first and the helmet gets stuck, you have a real problem.

The U.S. is something more like 80 people per square mile, with 4 million miles of road. Germany has 400 thousand miles of road. Germany has more than 7 times the population density but 1/10th the road surface.

    • @MisDirected2014
      @MisDirected2014 10 лет назад +7

      MisDirected No that's for the courts to decide, they just don't enforce every illegal activity, and just go after the extremely dangerous ones like crossing the double yellow line. It's like how cops in philadelphia generally don't pull you over for speeding because they have drug dealers and murderers to go after. Both are illegal, but cops choose to go after the one they feel is more dangerous.

    the manuals of most radar guns, and the law where I am from, indicates it is not accurate to measure someone's speed when they are changing direction and going around corners. Police are only meant to measure on a straight line, and need to hold the laser on the target for 2 seconds. Those cops measuring riders speeds weren't doing any of this.

    • @wolfendragoon
      @wolfendragoon 8 лет назад

      +tosgem While this is true on almost all radar guns, the newer lidar guns the chp uses require far less time on target to generate a speed reading. these can generate a reading in about 250-300ms, and report a lower speed reading if the vehicle is not moving directly towards or away from the officer. They do not, however, work with the gun in motion (i.e. the officer must stop his vehicle, or preferably exit his vehicle, to get a reading).

      I always thought it'll be cool if a department had a couple of hellcat chargers lol ... I mean for the most part it's already difficult to out run em so why give em false hope

      +Maccaroney You would gladly pay for the least capable and lowest IQs among us to drive high powered vehicles for no reason at all? I do understand the want of letting the fools kill themselves due to lack of coordination, lack of decision making skills and lack of general ability. The RUclips videos would be spectacular but the job of Deputy was created as a way for the least of us to still be able to participate in this Constitutional Republic, raise children, etc. It's a substitution for welfare only. Made up jobs given to idiots... look at any old western, it's the old, dumb and handicapped that are the Deputies. We need to get back to it. Cops are exactly like the elderly and dumb Walmart bag checkers with no more power than them either. Problem is dumb people like deputies are too stupid to have any real knowledge so you have to SHOW them their place by giving them golf carts and scooters with which to "protect and serve" us with.
