I agree. painting and drawing or whatever it is we're working on is a human experience. modern society is obsessed on how humans need to be more efficient, faster, and multitasking. but they somehow forget that we're only humans and humans need to tend to our emotional and mental needs. Slow down in this ever hurrying world. feel the breeze, smell the flowers and hear the sounds of the river. it's therapeutic.

@MsBootyTwish because that allow me to slow down, but matter of fact, as long as I´ve no income, I can´t make anything a whole day. So every now and then I find some time to paint, but there are other tasks and things to do, so "slowing down and do what ever you want" isn´t that easy or, in short, what I wrote.
People that want (you) to be quicker, most often don't know how to do it themselves. They haven't put in the time, the struggles and and the passion it takes to make 'it'.
Don't be pressured, it will not be to your benefit.
Adam, you have no idea how much your words meant to me. Despite the belief that AI isn't going to replace artists, it was still a fear within me deep down. I see my friends talking about AI Art right in front of me, saying that they created this & this with it, and I often felt disappointed about where the world is going.
Personally, I enjoy painting and creating artworks at a slow pace. I'm often asked why I take more than 15 hours for an artwork, and I believe it's because we're human. I paint not because of the final product, but because of the joy in the process. It's sometimes best to let go of that efficiency and just BE in that moment - To be your truest self. Thank you for reminding me of this ❤

I've been asked several times why i draw in the past, it's like people don't understand why one would put several hours in creating art but now with ai the world would look at it worse
@@meaningoflife7199 I understand that feeling.. The feeling of Self-doubt often creeps up on you before you know it. But sometimes, what you love doesn't have to always be understood by others. You draw because you're passionate about it. Despite the misunderstandings, you create because you're in love with the process of it. I think that's really important to keep us going, rather than focusing entirely on the finished product

Adam I dont normally comment; I'm more of a lurker. I sat listening to this while working on art, while having birdsong in the background (for my bunnies) Let me tell you it was the most serene and thought provoking atmosphere and I listened.
And then, I cried. Not because of fear of AI or stress or the trauma of what I've lived through, but out of hearing words I wasn't even aware I needed to hear.

I'm never not going to be creating. My art is worth more than the finished piece, but its easy to forget in this world of algorithms and hustle culture. So thank you, for bringing that back to the forefront.
Once there is proper AI legislation, we will see change. Current issue with AI is the learning model of it and how it uses peoples artwork without permission and AI companies abusing legal void. I'm also peeved at that fact. But Adam is very much right. AI will never get that itch to draw. AI will never stop collecting data and say ''oh I wanna draw and create something''. And that's what makes whole world of difference. Not to mention AI art even now is very much clockable, it always did this aura of ''dead'' rather than something that's created by human hand.
We are emotional creatures and as artists, we are more bounded to our creations, and thats why this issue hurts us. I personally believe it will resolve, and we should keep fighting it. It's also very important to step back and take time for ourselves, otherwise you'll burn out very easily, very fast.
My personal advice for younger artists and especially ones that are completely in the digital, get sketchbook and pencil, inks, paints, etc and take a break from digital. I made a mistake like Adam did too, it's very easy to get lost in digital once you dwell into work opportunities, but traditional gives way more visual-tactile feedback that digitial simply cannot provide. There is something meditative in the way you feel how pencil or marker behaves against smooth or coarse paper, whole experience is on a completely other level. It helped me reconnect with my own creative flame within myself. And that's something that AI can't never take away from you.

I wish I read this when I decided to give up in sharing my art to the world a week ago. I had a decent amount of following on my account and I said goodbye to everyone due to the stress that AI art has been imposing with my art and mental health. More than ever, I just felt like a piece of my identity felt so out of reach because of a machine that can easily churn out art more than I can ever do in my life. It felt like my space of expression was slowly being taken down by AI. I was just afraid, and lost, but your video once again has helped me see a better outlook on everything and it had reminded me of what I was missing.
Your approach of going back to traditional mediums truly gave me a eureka moment. All this time when I was so scared of being overcome by a machine, I had forgotten to enjoy the sensations and living in the present moment with art.
Nothing beats the feeling of finally nailing that blending of colors in watercolor, just when the brush mixes the colors with the wet paper. The feeling of covering your "mistakes" on a sketchbook with post it notes and doodling something above it to save the page. The satisfaction of filling a page with a combination of mindless doodles and random sparks of idea in everyday life. Nothing will ever beat those sensations, and just thinking about those sensations just made me cry because I've been so disconnected with art all this time. That what I needed all this time was to simply just, be the opposite of the threat. To just be human, and experience art as it is. The process and the act of living.
AI art will never make me feel any of those sensations, it will never spark joy in me. My joy is in my own hands, made by my own art. And sharing my art to those who values it will once again be a safe space of expression for me again soon.
If you quit the machine wins, so get back to creating and don't stop posting.
I said from the begining of all this: artist will art, no matter what. The sound, the texture, the smells of art materials, the multiple movements while you are making a stroke, picking another pencil at the same time. When you have a taste of the magic and feel it, you cannot let go.
I mean, the coloring books comunity will never let the AI paint by themselves the pics. Choose colors or palettes? sure, but not replacing their experience
I practiced a lot of calligraphy before the PTSD broke out. I still want to be an artist but the depression and anger issues are killing me. I developed an acute fear of failure and as a result, of trying. I need some kind of creative environment where I am externally motivated (but not pressured) to create, that keeps my art so I can’t destroy it, and a mentor to help me manage my social interactions. I like your content because it is very nurturing, validating and reassuring while being gentle and relaxing. You’re essentially an art therapist, thanks.

Hey Adam, I haven't been watching your videos in a while because of the stress of school and life but I wanted to say that I don't want to make art as my career anymore.
All my life I was pressured to be a perfect artist by my family and teachers. I had to get the best grades, go out of my way to put in the most work, I had to make the popular art so everyone will like it and so on. I lost the pleasure to create art so I hit a big art block for about a year or so. But as I'm about to go to university I realised that I'm done making art for other people and I want to start doing art for myself, even if nobody is ever going to see it. I don't want to make commissions, obsess about what's popular or the algorithm or be judged for doing something that I like. I know that that means I might have to only do art as a hobby but it's worth it as long as I can reclaim art as the happiness that pushed me into being myself.
You might not read this but I love you and this community with all my heart and I'm always going to be here to support you.♥️♥️♥️
I am in the same boat as you friend, but I realize that if we are lucky, life is a long journey that can change.
I went to school for IT, because I love computers and wanted a job that would allow me to work from the comfort of my own. I am working on art while achieving my masters and working from home now. However, maybe I might pivot to making art as a job later in life. I don't hope for it or wish for it exactly, but people tend to do more than just one thing in their life, so I try to not to think so rigidly. My practical degree actually gives me a sense of peace and non urgency when it comes to art, I like it
@@alexajohnson944 ya I totally agree! Personally the thought of doing only one thing my entire like feels sort of depressing. My biggest goal right now is to travel around the world for a couple of years doing some volunteering work. Which is perfect for me because I can do that while doing art on the side in my own time.
I'm about to graduate my pathological analysis major and i feel the same , I'm enjoying drawing for me to bring myself joy
Adam, everything you have said in this video, was something I desperately needed to hear. Like many artists, I have been terrified that my dream carrier, my passion, and what I've worked so hard for, is just going to be replaced by neural-network based image generators. My uncertainly left me asking if art is something I should even pursue. But, what you said about the human hand and its beautiful complexity, really made me realize that art is so much more than the final project, and we can't expect ourselves to behave like computers.

I thought about this for a long time. I read about it, saw movies about A.I.
I saw "Blade runner" before I read Phillip K. Dicks novel "Do androids dream of electric sheep". When I read it, I saw Phillip K. Dick having been betrayed by the movie.
His message was, that replicants don't have feelings. There was this part where the replicants sat together. They watched a spider, crawling over the table. I'm paraphrasing: "Eight legs seem too many. Let's cut some of its legs off..." She cut four of its legs off. "Four will be enough." The spider, reduced to four legs didn't move anymore. It died. The replicant was like: "My calculation was incorrect - so what!"
Machines, A.I.s are supposed to be tools. They don't care about life at all!!!!
The movie Blade runner didn't get THAT message across. It's about how inhumane replicants are treated, and how we should have feelings for them. BULLSHIT!

You managed to open a deep window in yourself, and somehow keep rediscovering humanity. I can hear it in every video, the passion about the human kind.

The reason I still hand write most of my plans and to-do lists is partially because of what you mentioned - you're forced to slow your mind down. I tend to remember what I wrote down while I forget what I typed into a productivity app because of this. It also indirectly helps keep my lines confident when sketching, which ironically is more efficient digitally because you aren't constantly erasing or undoing lines.
No matter how far AI evolves, no matter how much it improves, None of it could beat the feeling I get when I finish an artwork because I took the time to make that.
I've had a terrible art block the past several months, to the point of being unable to even study after a while. Perhaps partially due to AI - or just my own misgivings and doubts. But there is something to it when I pick up a pencil (which I don't usually work in) and just try to... feel the curves and shapes of something in a study. Digital can't really compare to it. It might be my own shortcoming, but digital never feels like it has the same movement, smoothness, or life to it that traditional media does.
I'm trying to start sketch booking again. Just sitting, and feeling out my subject, putting the lines in and studying the shapes instead of trying to make a pretty picture. I miss the liveliness of some of my older work.
As a 61 year old hobbyist water colour painter, I’m coming to this video from possibly a different place to a lot of people who may watch this channel.
So let me just say that, as an avid viewer and appreciater of art from the old masters to some of the most amazing computer aided art available, I would be astounded to find AI art that replaces the unique creative perspective of any artist who ever picked up any medium to help realise their vision.
Humans are innately creative. It’s what we do.
I understand that as working artists, it can feel a bit threatening and I agree that it’s something that we all need to be aware of, but really, it’s one thing to be able to collect data to create a predictable result but quite another to collect data, assimilate it and take a creative quantum leap. Humans can do that.
So don’t lose heart. Use the tools that suit you and that you take pleasure and joy in to create your vision so that beginner artists like myself and those who perhaps don’t create art but deeply enjoy and appreciate art, can find inspiration and enrichment.
Interesting research: Because of constant use of computers, children’s wrists and hands are getting weaker and their writing skills are less so get out those sketchbooks!!
I appreciate your content so much. I just quit my job to stay at home, God bless my husband for making it possible, and to pursue digital painting and illustration as a Freelancer. My background is Graphic-Design but I had a long break from it and actually became a police officer until I met my husband and left my country.
I love spending my time painting my characters to life and my focus is always more on the emotions, than creating the like-attracting artwork.
Right now I'm going through so many overwhelming feelings, thousands plans and no idea how to begin. And it causes so much insecurity and anxiety. I don't have a social media following, no experience with RUclips videos and Instagram reels and it is really discouraging to see how hard even the ones who 'made it' have to work on social media to stay relevant.
At 32 I feel like I'm back at the spot where I was at 15. Who really am I and what can I really do? The more I learn about myself the more I think, I might have ADHD and especially the procrastination and paralysis makes it really difficult to even start putting myself out there and advertising commissions.
Your videos always seem to get me grounded when my mind is racing and my insecurities get so huge. Thank you so much for being a real, positive influencer. ❤

It's, the process. The process of drawing a stickman styled lion as a 5 years old and rendering a Riot Games level huge piece with grand world building is the same. It's about what you do, not how well you do it.

This is uh, not really a comment directed to the viewers, but rather to you, Mr. Adam (hope u don't mind if I call u that, it's been a while since I've watched your videos and I feel awkward calling u Lucidpixel in this-).
I'm writing this now, cause after quite a few *years*, the youtube algorithm has decided to recommend you once more to me. After many y e a r s.
I was in around... 7th grade, I believe(?) when I started to watch your videos. That was me at the very start of my art journey. You were, quite literally, the first artist I ever had any form of genuine inspiration from. Not only that, but being an art fledgeling, I kinda just stuck to the first cool person I saw online. And looking back on it now, and I'm really happy that it was you
I remember the hours I spent just watching your videos in the background, and just sketching. Hearing your messages, just listening to you talk about whatever topic the video was about. Just sketching. Every now and then looking up to see you painting away yet another masterpiece
And then school got harder, my free time lessened, and bit by bit, I drifted away from my very hard-set routine of listening to your words and drawing. Hence why I haven't gotten a single peek of you for years.
Now, when I'm about to hit another huge landmark in my life, I get you back in my recommendations. As I type this I realize that this comment will barely make any sense, and for that I'm sorry, but I hope that I can get some form of gratitude through these letters on the screen.
Getting you to pop up in my stuff out of nowhere was legit a slap in the face full of nostlagia. I legit stopped scrolling, froze, and was like "holy shit I remember this guy-", because how could I *not* remember you? You're literally the one who truly got me to start getting into art
It really threw me back to those early stages of my art journey. The ones where I could barely draw eyes correctly, the ones where my drawn heads looked more like potatoes than anything. Kind of made me reflect on how far I've come, I suppose. My art and skill evolved, and I can say with confidence I'm a much better artist now than I was back when I first started to watch your content. Not saying I'm amazing at it, heavens no, I still have a lot to learn- but WOW I learned so much already!

Unfortunately, my particular taste in art and more has evolved, and so has my personality- because of this, I probably won't watch your content as much as I did as a younger kid. Not saying it's bad, in fact your content is amazing, but I just... grew out of it, I suppose? Gods I sound like a dick, and I'm trying to say thank you over here- anyway, I probably won't watch you as much as I used to, but I'll definitely check in every once in a while since youtube has finally started to recommend your stuff to me again.
But on the even more fortunate side of my previous thing- damn. My art taste has evolved. As in, I have seen and learned from so many different artists, that I actually have a more solid foundation for taste, preferences, and whatnot? Wowie! Doesn't seem like a big deal, but to me it definitely is. Before I was so overwhelmed and new to this type of stuff, that I just went with whatever I found. But now I have been in the art community long enough to actually find myself in certain places, genres, etc. that I genuinely adore

Thank you, I’ve been struggling getting into screenwriting because of how daunting it is from going to songwriting to writing a whole tight knit crime story with sprawling stories and interconnected everything, I know it’s a lot but…i wanna have a big project lol, but I’m still struggling to even start it but this helps with motivating me to even write 1 page a day, that’s all, one page. I’d love to be a screenwriter or filmmaker when I’m older, but it’s crazy for me to see Tarantino or other inspirations pump out so many movie scripts and I’m struggling to make even 1 Pilot script
Like every step I take when I feel like I wanna write my story it’s like “I have no clue what I’m doing, I only write songs not whole characters” I think depression and stress and motivation is fucking with me but also external stuff like media and feel like I’m getting looked down upon from my inspirations and favorite TV shows like “you’ll never be better than us, whatever you write will never top this”
And I’m a big movie buff, so when I read amazing powerful scripts or amazing lyrics, it’s like…how does a human even produce this, how does a studio produce this. I’m only 16 not a fucking Wizard with a million dollar budget
whatever you make doesn’t have to top your favorite tv shows and there is no need to beat yourself up about it 👍 many get caught up with making their writing or art the best of the best, but whatever you may write or make if you enjoy doing it than that is all that matters in the end. hope you take care and life gets better for you bro, take small steps and you can achieve your goals

I like seeing your more spiritual and human perspective, it has helped me many times in the past and I hope I'll anjoy it many times more in the future. You know and preach art as a human act beyond everything else, it's just human to paint the interior of a cave, to dance, to sing, etc, and that is art at it's core... but the world goes further then that... the reason many people stop doodleing after theyr school years, or stop writing or playing instruments, is because we live in a world that is constantly shaming us, shaming humans, in "wasting time" if we are not "productive". Many people can't make art "for fun" without the world saying it's useless unless they make money off of it, and the ones that can are usualy lucky or blessed to live a life with time for that.
Corporations don't care for humans or human acts, they operate as machines with profit as the main and only goal. The A.I will never, nor could ever, stop the human need and want to do or to enjoy art, but corporations can, and will, cut art jobs as fewer artists using A.I as a tool can provide the work with faster production and fewer staff, wich in turn may not stop people from doing art, but will push many from the works that pay for it. We do not live in a system that respects individuals, unless your individual trait can turn a profit.
I don't think art jobs are doomed, that's silly, but there will be consequences, in visual arts, music, and worst of all may be the writing jobs...
In the end I can only hope for one day we as a species can overcome this system, that profits from misery as a rule, ecause I know for a fact they if they can profit from my pain, they will.

The thing that traditional art has over digital art -- mistakes can’t be easily undone and you have be creative to ‘fix’ then instead of “double tapping”. Learning how to embrace mistakes and flaws is something that is missing from a lot of today’s digital art.
I was having intestine infections and my doctor told me to slow down when I eat, fully chew my food slowly and methodically. After doing this my intestine issues subsided. Slowing down I think applies to all aspects of life. We get more quality out of life when we slow down more.
I personally belive that an artist should always keep sketching. We should play with ALL mediums. Digital is my favorite but it's healthy to play around.
My only medium I won't touch is charcoal. I hate that stuff lol.

I do a webcomic in Procreate most days, but as fun as that is, I find analog art much more satisfying. I've been really getting into monotypes and kinda purposefully being just a little too goopy with the ink when I draw on the plate to get more random outcomes when it hits the press.
And I'm liking playing with pastels for near-instant gratification.
I think there's something bred into us about tangible art going back to the cave paintings. It's kinda like the visual version on grounding yourself by gardening and getting your hands into the soil.

I think the video that made the most impact on me was Sam Hamper's view on why AI Art is going to get worse, not better, and ties well into your own points in this video. Art is at its most powerful and you as an artist are at your most creative when you are limited. AI art, especially the earlier models of Midjourney and Stable Diffusion where it makes mistakes and unusual decisions and weird contortions and blends are more intriguing and interesting than the mass produced clean and clear art that they are producing now. As AI art improves models will lose their mistakes and actually interesting decision making that makes it unique. I started doodling as a kid obviously but I didn't start taking art seriously until almost 2 years ago and then started fully digital. But I apply a lot of challenges to myself, limiting brushes, limiting palettes, limiting strokes, limiting time. These limitations are what stokes my development the most and what brings me the most joy in creating. If you truly want that feeling you have to create yourself, you can't let AI do all the leg work. There's an element of that in creating the right prompts but it's barely scratching the surface of the absolute joy that creating with your own hand, line by line, stroke by stroke, a work of art. I don't care what AI can do with the right prompt because when it's done I can't have the same feeling of genuine human companionship I get when I talk to another artist about a painting or drawing they made and the challenges they faced and how they overcame them and what they felt.

These last couple of months i really havent been able to draw. Everytime i pick up the pen and sketch something, it just looks wrong, i hate it. I cant come up with anything good, i dont like coloring or doing lineart and sketching feels tedious. I was listening to the video not really paying attention until you said "Its got nothing to do with how dope that finish picture looks".
I've been so focused on "making something good" I really wasnt focusing on just "making". I don't know how to put it into words but i cant feel that spark anymore, i dont know what to do, i dont wanna quit drawing, but i dont know if i can keep going.
I've been feeling similarly lately. Ever since I decided to become an artist and to learn, which was about 6 years ago now, all I ever wanted is to make art, and I'm pretty sure that's all I'll ever want in my life. I don't care about anything else, but it can be daunting and sometimes I get seviere anxiety from just trying to work on a piece. It feels so paradoxical, but I know that I'll never quit.
I've been exploring different techniques and subjects lately, a LOT of my recent works are centered around sadness and grief, these are really personal to me, yet they are harder to make than before too, especially the ones that are more detailed and time consuming. I don't hate what I do, I just hate how hard it feels nowadays to make them and how I can't sit down to make something way too often even if I have all the time and energy.
It's not always a thing that works, but I feel that I'm slowly learning to make things that I like instead of any conformist things, being able to call something imperfect finished, being able to make something sad or distressing without feeling bad about it, being able to.. not try my best to lie how something I made is a certain quality and do stuff like "I'll just add more details to x, so it will compensate for y and keep the qualtiy of the work at an acceptable level" and instead be proud of any flawed work that I made after seeing what are the things that work well in it, and just learn to say "I made this because I wanted, and I'm upset at certain issues, but it's my best effort and I'm happy that I didn't abandon this piece that noone ele would've made if I didn't want to."

With regards to moving from traditional art medium to digital, my experience so far during a course I’m on- I found myself searching for Ctrl+Z on my sketch book to undo an error I did on paper! 🤦🏽♂️ not once but many times 🤣🤣🤣. I struggle to draw simple things on digital with my current set up (basic drawing tablet). Even if I had a display tablet I’d still be rubbish now. but the feel of drawing on paper and inking with my markers…. It’s a precious feeling. I still want to draw digital as well.
Handwriting-- I grew up in Africa. All our exams and homework on paper. I had ugly hand writing for class notes and a rounded writing for homework and exams. When I moved abroad, everything was on computer. University exams and dissertations. All digital. Then one day I had to write a formal letter in hand writing and sign it… it felt like I cannot write anymore. I still have a rubbish handwriting and have to go slow when I write. Or it looks like a drunk pigeon scribbled all over it😂

Every time I'm in nature I'm overcome with this feeling of awe, for which germans, of course, have a word- Waldeinsamkeit. And it floods my mind with inspiration that I don't think rolling an image gacha (yep an AI generator, i find this comparison very useful) would help with- I need to slowly inch into making backgrounds, and color my pieces, to express a mood and a feeling through them.. it will be a long journey I am sure, but what else do I have to spend time for in this life if not passions?

This is one of those videos, that came at a time I never really realized I needed. I've been between two kinds of anxiety with drawing lately and haven't done anything because of it. Anxiety of failure as all other venues I've tried in things have failed, art feels more like a last bastion to relax, create and honestly do it as a career. Retail is draining me on multiple fronts. Art was something I did as a kid, because stuff then I enjoy now. Why not draw it again? My other anxiety had been the creeping invasion of AI, and I've been slowly looking at it more of just another avenue of reference.
So now, with these videos of yours, I find myself wanting more to make art, less to game or do some other things. Perhaps, those final walls will soon fall and I'll be creating once more and be better than ever. But this video now, I don't know why or how struck a rare chord. I dabbled in Caligraphy, and being left handed I'm a minority in I have to angle papers or get specialized nibs for pens. But truly? Thank you for this video, and beautiful cat by the way .

I had picked up a LAMY fountain pen at the beginning of the pandemic, one of their cheaper $30 ones, and I have never filled so many journals so quickly.
I love Institute of Human Anatomy. I came across it looking for references of a skull and spend an entire day getting lost on the channel.
When I took the entry exam for art school in my country, I drew 5 hands, counting.
The details were interesting, because I have burn wounds on my left hand, so I displayed those. In the end, I did get accepted and was there for 4y. Then they kicked me out, still don't know why. Later I started designing gardens, so I had a magnificent drawing table and such fine pens. I miss that. Now I design knitwear. Fine work, but less drawing.

When AI started gaining momentum, I was afraid that it would enable the owner class to monopolize creativity. It took me a little while to realize that ai will never be creative. It will only ever be able to mimic what sentient beings have already created. Humans do mimic each others creativity, but we are capable of going furthur than the ones before us with meaning and purpose. That's something ai can never do.

Awesome video, and totally connected with what I came to think these past two weeks; I was watching a video time ago and they said 'humans are creative beings' and suddenly I felt like a weight has been liftd from my shoulders, I never really thought about it but it's so simple. We create. Ai can work only with what's already there, in a sense, in the past. It shifted my perspective completely and I just enjoy art so much more now. I looked thru my old art with fresh eyes and I thought 'Learning how to draw and paint was my childhood dream and I reached it! I know how to draw and paint, maybe I'm slow, but I can!!' I'm so happy now, everytime I think about art. Which I think it's very important, a positive feeling instead of a negative one. Also, totally random, but I think you should absolutely do a video about your cat 🐱😍LOL

Initially, I wanted to point out some inaccuracies in the technical analogies, but then I realized that this sugar-coating approach is actually the right thing to do. I'm sure you're aware, Adam, that your audience mostly consists of young beginner artists, with only a fraction of them aspiring to pursue an art career. The majority of people there (including myself) will never make money from art, which is totally okay. After all, art is not solely about making money, right? 😃 In other words, they are the least affected by the AI revolution in the art industry. However, they are also the most concerned about it, as it can lead to a loss of motivation and trigger typical youth-related issues like starting to feel depressed.
You did a fantastic job in reassuring these amateur artists, enabling them to continue their artistic hobbies without worrying about the impact of AI. We should all just take a moment to calm down, pick up a pencil, and draw without the fear that our art will be scraped to train some model. Honestly, nowadays, automated scraping is not a common practice anymore. It's mostly done manually, as only a few images are needed to replicate any style. Therefore, for your artworks to be used in training, they need to be exceptionally outstanding. It doesn't surprise me that it happened to you, Adam. 😀

Wow Adam, you blew me away with this vid. You totally spoke my language. I just wanna put this out there - Prof. Roger Penrose (Physicist) recently won a Nobel Prize for his scientific theory on the physics of the human mind - and basically he is saying that the workings of our minds/brains aren't strictly speaking only 'computational' - sure we're doing that, but we're also doing something...else...something more. So our obsession with always comparing ourselves to computers is, it seems to me (and Prof. Penrose) quite misplaced ...on many levels. Let's keep drawing guys (with digital tablets and pencils too...and pens..and crayons and...)!

I'm glad you brought up that all computers can do is data. On the technical side, AI hype & horror discussions tend to leave out how computers are only really able to do exactly what they're told in terms of code and are only fast because of how specialized they are at the software level. Computers slightly better at interpreting what you tell it seem to get blessed with the 'AI' title, but there's no real intelligence there because it is all just data being thrown together. The game of telephone that is code compiling cannot capture the art of expression because every bug in the code and nuance in meaning represents a hole in the proverbial net it's trying to capture data with.
On a wider spectrum, jobs and activities that benefit from a more generalist viewpoint or approach are things that the human brain is best at and what computers are crippled by due to the amount of parallel processing and references required for anything complex. Recursive thinking is second nature to us, but an exponential death sentence to computer processing speeds.
In short, get physikal with what you do and it will touches you.
I personal prepaird my digital drawings in my sketch book and I It helps me so much to get a deep understanding what I do and what I want to show.

It's called being a "penman." Dover has reprinted "The Universal Penman", if you want to have your mind completely blown by what is possible by a great master back in the day (George Bickham). After decades of calligraphy, just a few years of drawing practice, I'm still aspiring to those masterworks. But every single time, I still love falling into the slowness and stillness and breath of lettering.

Whenever I draw or paint, there is something revealed in a line or a brushstroke that I didn't know about myself, that I didn't expect to express myself in that gesture until I had done it. I just came from Istebraks channel and I have some pretty deep thoughts. Life has come to a point where everything is boiled down into pure entertainment. Her channel has been suffering because people aren’t as interested in spending an hour to learn something anymore. Social media has become a dopamine farm. Everything has to be digestible in a matter of seconds. So we’ve lost touch with the meaning and intention behind slow and thoughtful processes. Like how you mentioned writing and art in general.
Recently I was listening to someone talk about how oral traditions were incredibly important in the past. Families would spend lots of time reading to one another or telling each other stories to pass time. We’ve lost that intimacy and relationship. I think we suffer physically, mentally, and spiritually from this. For me, as a Christian relationship with God is extremely important. However, I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always know how to do that. I wonder how much societal standards of what family, friendships, and romance should be influence that.
Also side note, I wonder if 10 years down the line we will see a newfound appreciation for physical art.

I can see that she’s at a point of confusion and disappointment because she feels she losing the fight against social media
She isn’t - she might not know this yet but she’s a lifeline to humanity right now. Her honesty and tempo and ability to listen and engage is a massively important example to her listeners, who are very possibly scared and lonely - knowing that they feel lost emotionally and socially, but don’t understand why
We need her to stay true to herself and keep being who she is - this will be the example her listeners will eventually come to value greatly
We’re hitting a tipping point in society right now and Istebrak will be instrumental in rebalancing us all

AI can never take the joy of making art away from me. It can never replace the raw emotion I feel as a living being from either making or looking at art made by people. I don't share as much as I used to, but it's not because of AI. I'm not fast at making works, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'd rather be slow than to try to imitate a machine and push out emotionless works. It's a wonderful thing being able to slow down and think, and enjoy the experience of creating artworks.

A lot of people keep missing the point that AI can only stay current or modern, as long as humans create new content for it to process, because it’s just algorithms that re-mix data.
It will probably keep being used, but there will always be a need for human creators to make new content for the algorithms to process. Culture is not stagnant and so tastes in art will adapt with it, in a way that “AI” art can’t compensate for.
I think there is more to AI than data. Intelligence is the key word. Creativity, originality, these are emergent properties of intelligence, as much as we might want to think we are so special as to have them be uniquely human.
Also I don’t take for granted the miracle of common sense, but you could provide that exact scenario of the driver hand gestures to a language model and it would get it right.

If I was incredible, my learn rate and growth as an artist would at least to be comparable to other artists', but mine seems multiple times slower. I am objectively inferior to others, and not incredible. Your words are comforting and well meaning, but that doesn't mean a lot if they do not reflect reality
I was never personally scared of AI because I always thought that if artists where to be 'replaced' by AI we would just stop worrying about making art for money and views and we would go back to making art for ourselves and our community which would lead to another art movement that will bring us all together again. I think the date of artists are in our hands and we shouldn't give that power to somebody else. Although I'm very neutral to this opinion I still felt so moved by your words and I felt like I could cry any minute, you truly are my best inspiration and thank you for being unapologetically yourself.♥️♥️
There is a reason professional artists are good. They have the time to develop. Few people can develop art as a hobby on the side of a job eating 8 hours a day at least. AI will destroy art as we know it. I don't see any silver lining in the mushroom cloud. Just the hope that humanity will matter after this stops being a shiny toy. By then it might be late for me tho...

AI doesn't get to choose what information is communicated, it's not waiting for your input, it has no goal, it doesn't know that a lot of people tend to see artistry as technical proficiency, it doesn't know anything, and it doesn't "grow" unless we do.
We decide what role AI plays. Why let it fill the role of artist? When it's not even close to being one and the point of it's existence isn't to be one, anyway.

AI art is so good because it's so derivative. The harder you try to get it to do something new, the faster the quality of the output goes down. Ai art was never going to replace artists, it will just remind artists of what really matters in art making.

Have you seen the new souls-like Lords of the Fallen
I have indeed, looks beautiful.
That said, there are subtle and powerful artistic nuances, both in Miyazaki’s lore as well as his artistic direction that is in a league all of it’s own.
Lords of the Fallen is a great example of a production that has done a stunning job at mimicking the “Souls-Like” genre, without totally understanding the artistic philosophy behind it.
Don’t take that as a diss however, it’s a beautiful game.
The primary dividing line for AI is between: (1) those who find clarity/fulfillment/community in performing the craft & (2) people who just want cool stuff in their head to get out for sharing/monetizing. It’s a fake battle, you can have both w/o denigrating each other. Just gotta know what lane you are trying to occupy in that very moment. Further, people will always love artists who create art. Knowing the person, what they are like, why they made a piece and feeling it in your bones - feels good man.
I agree with your sentiments yet I believe that its somewhat irrelevant to the actual issue. The reason AI is a problem is not because it can truly replace artist in all aspects but because it does what companies want. Quick and cheap facsimiles of art to sell. We already can't compete against the big media conglomerates as is so what could we do when they start using AI on a large scale. The problem is and always has been the institution of capitalism (big shocker i know) and how art is viewed in that context.
I'm not so arrogant as to think I'm expressing anything new here, you have been working in art longer then I have been drawing, but because I think you put to much focus on one aspect of the issue.
Addendum: I do not know if you have seen comment on one of your AI videos where I expressed the sentiment that you as an established artist may have lost perspective on the issue, because you would be less financially affected by AI, for this I wish to apologize. That was both unfair and unjustified, I should not have presumed your situation.

regarding AI art it doesn't have that creative process. can I go to Ai and say "AI, draw me something" what will it do? nothing? does it require some input from me? if I have to take it by the hand and tell it what I want it then why bother. If I asked you, Adam, to draw me something from your imagination you could crank it out with little to no input from me. this is where AI won't overtake human artist

Relying on non artists to make a living off of making art is the problem. They don't care about art or they would be artists themselves....So they use ai.
Becareful listeining advice from an artist who sell courses. If you are an aspiring artist listen to those artist working in the industry right now. Not a teacher who sell online course tht can take advantage of you.
That’s sound advice so long as it’s researched and backed by fact, otherwise you’re putting yourself and those listening to you in a potentially bad spot.
Of course, if you turn out to be right then you’ve saved artists from being ripped off - but if you are wrong, then you’re interfering with artists access to great learning resources by seasoned professionals.
Understand that what you say holds weight in the minds of others - if you disappoint others with poor judgement calls too often, your credibility will be tarnished.
the problem is what makes a good teacher is a different world from what makes a good artist

I recommend learning art fundamentals so you can start relating more to trained artists - you’ll gain respect on both ends of the spectrum, traditional and AI

I don't care how pretty the pictures are - it has no deliberete intend behind it and thus, it doesn't mean anything. A kid's drawing is more art than Midjourney.
The problems are jobs. Cause if art is just a Hobby few will be able to develop beyond mediocrity in terms of thechncal skill. It would still be art, but their potential being stolen from them by aome greedy tech Bros is simply sad. And a los for all of us.
How many Kim Jun Gi's will never come to be, cause they are cleaning toilets? And I don't say cleaning isn't important, but this is like giving a doctor to paint. It's just a waste of a doctor who is supposed to do something that isn't painting.
That said, I think we're safe for a while. AI hasn't replaced translators, precisely because its doesn't get human logic and neuance. AI may or may not suck a few years from now, but it will be regurgitated gibberish. AI cannot make the concept art of say, Scorn, because it has intend behind every part of it. It's sad that people don't see it.
