This is only one of many videos on Lucidpixul that discuss mental health and professional productivity, enjoy!
There are also plenty of other videos that offer concept art, illustration and fantasy art advice from the perspective of a long-term professional and teacher/director in the field.

When I was a kid, I wanted to draw comic books. Life didn't lead me that way. Married really young, kids young, university and graduate degrees, work life, raising teenagers, and church things meant that art very often took a back seat, and I long periods of time without drawing. When i "came back" it was discouraging to see these artists in their early 20 who were far more skilled and realizing that I've got a ton of catching up to do. That and trying to fight off the "why bother" thinking, throw in periods of depression where nothing creative happens ....and it's been a long road.

Adam’s really saving us with these inspirational talks. This is really an issue I’m facing and ever since I discovered your channel it’s been a great time for me and my art. I REALLY needed this. Sometimes I get tired of drawing but then I get stressed or scared of not doing nothing because I don't wanna give up art. I once remember trying to draw at 4 am bcs I couldn't sleep bcs I didn't draw in all day and I felt guilty... Now I now i can rest without failing myself, thank you so much.

The fact that you can wait more than 1 minute to start talking and are never rushed to say anything nor try to forcibly push anything you say makes you an excellent mentor. You once mentioned it in a video, how you space your words so they soak in on us and get the true message, the full meaning of your words. It is nice, it is appreciated and it is perfect because you have so much good and real things to tell us. To me, it's not so much about inspiration or motivation, but more about getting to see some more of the whole big picture that is this industry and listening to someone that puts weight into what he's saying is way more than I could ever ask for. Thank you.

As a 25 year old I feel like I'm always behind in life feeling that pressure and stress trying to produce art. Sometimes I catch myself comparing myself trying to rush or compare myself to these big artists or people in my life ahead of me. It is really exhausting mentally just trying to do better. Wanting to make this as a living so bad enjoying what I love doing best but through that comes obstacles. Its a spiritual battle. Thankfully this what I needed to hear and it hit right through the heart. Enjoying things outside of things is what I needed (a break), spending time with family and friends, play videogames, take photography, or simply a walk... I cant thank you enough for hearing your words Adam! You are truly an inspiration to not just artists but to everyone. You give us hope!

This is a really good argument against the whole "jack of all trades, master of none" idea. Not only does this diversity give you space to actively recuperate, but it increases your performance in the main focus by holistic growth (so long as the "active rest" is related and beneficial anyway).
I'm a 3D artist, but I really like watching your videos and painting when I've ground myself to a pulp. Funny, I notice my sense of colour and composition in my 3D work improving at a much faster rate... and I'm much more relaxed :)

Great video! I just spent 2 months helping my mom move to a new state and then immediately help her recover from surgery. It swallowed up my life and I was so angry about losing momentum. But once I relaxed into it and decided to use it as a creative break. I played mobile games that reduced my stress and found one with a very sweet storyline, I fine-tuned my treatment plan for my RA, anxiety, and depression, I started expanding my taste in music... and then I found a song that inspired me to write and storyboard out a music video! I spent the 2 months playing the song several times a day visualizing the video while pack boxes and cleaning and helping my mom (my mom now has it memorized lol) and when my work was done 2 months later, I finally sketched out the first outline of it. And for the first time in YEARS I have a passion project that I'm consistently jazzed about, no matter what else is going on in my life.

I personally have been having a hard time finding my way professionally of recent times, its reassuring to have someone with experience talk about their journey. I know that I'm not the only person - but hearing it helps all the same. Please continue on this thread - it's very helpful psychologically and emotionally. I 100% agree with your stand point on the whole thing, especially the idea of pacing yourself. And now, being almost 30, I wish I could've took the learning grind more seriously, and discarded the discouraging thoughts, the lack of faith my art could be worth anything. I'm surrounded by dozens of artists far more talented then myself but I've framed all of it as just a motivator: "look at what my peers can do and try to reach that level". I'm hoping to find a job as a concept artist in the field of games or a level designer iterating on someone elses vision.

This is a really good video. I've found myself struggling with art ever since last summer after grade 10 and I couldn't find and motivation or inspiration to do so and I still don't have that. I would constantly be telling myself things like "Well if you can't draw or create anything are you really an artist? You're slacking off and you need to be drawing, or you won't improve!". Up until today I had still been in that mindset thinking that I *had* to be creating or I was only wasting time. Then yesterday I found your channel on that video "3 ways you're creating artist block without knowing", and then i found this one today. This one was a real eye-opener to me, and now I know what mindset I should be in right now instead of stressing myself to make art and still not making anything I'm happy with. I might look into music or maybe photography as well; since I might be doing a course on that this semester. Thanks Adam.

Master studies, or perspective... instead of just binging on one type of fundamental for months on end. Switching during "breaks" to another study. Then coming back feeling refreshed. Wow... Thank you for this common sense idea. It's so easy to be sucked into some sort of tunnel vision, where you only focus on one thing, until you burn yourself out...

Your gentle understanding really motivating, i think as a strugling artist i just wanted to be understood, it wasn't because of people demand me to draw, in fact it's me that demand "i have to do it i have to do it." My GF also suggesting me this 'do something productive -artsy but not drawing directly and not as tiring' method. I try by playing sand box games like sims but i really pay attention on how the artwork/ lighting/ texture work, also learn to build and see how my sense of building background and clutter item that look cute both in game also "yea i can draw that too in my drawing latter," it suprising how much i learn from that.

I really did need this video, recently I stopped posting my art online, and around that same time I didn't feel like drawing much.
This lasted for a whole week as of typing this. I moved to music, changed my art account into a music account, and even ended up creating some new music and practicing. I was still in creative endeavors, but as a person who has pretty much drawn daily their whole life, this week of barely creating art freaked me out. Today I actually panicked, worried that me not posting art would ultimately lead to me never drawing anymore, and become the day the music dies.
This video changed that for me. It allowed me to breathe, understand that it's ok to rest, maybe I just had art block, or maybe I needed to unlock my interest in music.
Thankfully I am drawing wildly as I watch this video, I feel relaxed and inspired and less worried about losing my passion.
Thank you Adam, I really might have spiraled without watching this tonight.

I really liked this video, because it puts things into perspective again. I wasn't doing this much art this week, because I didn't felt like it. I was stressed from my job and my research to get an apprenticeship and wasn't feeling so good anyway. So I did a lot of research to find new resources of Inspiration, I watched a lot of youtube videos about art, found some new amazing artist, I could follow a bit, so today I felt even worse, because I had so much stress and everything was to much, so I locked myself into my room and I was sketching and creating art and now I feel a lot better. I kind of needed the break to care about the other important stuff, but I also needed this little "meltdown" today, to begin to create again.
Normally I am juggling between art and writing novels and poems, but the break I needed from writing is a bit longer now. (I take this break scince november, because I have to think about the structure of the novel and the next steps for the charakters.)
Well, I hope you can understand everything, I'm really tired, but I wanted to comment on this video, because it gave me so much. English is not my mother tongue, but I learn it :)
I hope you and your famaly are doing well. Your art is amazing. :)

I'm 20 and still live with my parents so I don't have to worry too much about the "adult paperwork" side of life yet, I only have to focus on myself... and that's where both the curse and the blessing comes. I want to make a living out of my art so I feel constantly overly anxious about spending too much time not working, or just not doing enough. I've had to take a break at the beginning of the month because, apparently, working 4-5 hours every day (weekends included) without a real break is extremely damaging to my back and neck.
It's hard to tell myself that it's okay to rest and that I should have at least one day to myself that isn't focused on making art for the internet. I should just write your advice on a bunch of post it notes that I'd stick on every inch of surface in my room lol
Anyways, thank you for the great talk, Adam. As always, you're a much needed blanket of reassurance in this cold world of mental health. brrr

Thank you kind sir, this was really helpful. I am in a place where i struggle with mental illness and am therefore unable to work, but i get the feeling that people around me push me towards "being successful" and finally getting a job and "making it" Stuff, and all the pressure really makes me not want to draw at all, i do not like anything i do and it feels like such a chore. Because it feels like i have to, not because i want to. And i struggle with taking breaks, because, like you said, it never really feels like a break, just like pushing "the inevitable" further away, and if i waste so much time i could just go and do the thing. I think i will switch a little what i do, and see if it helps.
    So again thank you

It's very true. Variety is the spice of life. Physically, mentally, spiritually. People are not made to be stagnant. Stagnation creates irritation, frustration which often builds brooding anger issues because you know you need to do something, but you don't know what and that's how the frustration shows itself. I used to only draw with pencil and ink starting out and it would go through ebb and flow of inspiration and frustration.
It wasn't until I could afford to expand into other mediums. It gave me different skills, different avenues with different possibilities. This springs that venturous desire to explore and discover.
Now, I have Oil paint, and watercolor, digital or markers to switch between. As I spend an extended amount of time on a piece in oil paint, I will find that one day I can't lay a stroke of the brush that makes sense and it just isn't working. That's when I know it's time to switch to another piece in a different medium. It can't be the same medium - I only encounter the same issue at the time. As long as it is a different medium, it doesn't matter if it's only small concept paintings or a full painting - I regain that itch to create. It's a cycle that happens at different time lengths. Sometimes I can paint in one medium for weeks, then I have to switch for a while before returning to the other medium and it just starts flowing with ease again.
I have also found that doing bits of each medium every day helps keep the balance less extreme. So instead of going weeks in one medium, if I switch every other day, or even 20 minutes in that day, I don't get that medium whiplash.
And for those days that I just cant lay a pencil brush or stylus, I will take me time as well; whether it's youtube videos on interesting subject matter like myths and lore, or I surf pintrest for aesthetics that I like for projects later down the road. Variety and cycling through routines is rewarding for art and diets.

Hey this was good. I had art block very bad art block for about two or three years and even then I try to pick a little bit at a piece here and there but I never finished any. It wasn’t until my husband was giving my old iPad and I got a new one and we started drawing together that my artistic muse started to come back and also it’s been pretty cool helping him get back into the art room after many years of being away from it. It’s funny how teaching someone and advising them will pick up my muse. I’m completely self taught and legally blind to boot but I still had useful knowledge and that was coo.

I‘ve now been completely neglecting drawing, which is what I value most, because of school. I just recently turned 20 and am at my last school year. A lot is required of us, and I feel like I haven‘t been able to use my time for my own artistic pursuits. This sucks. The past few months have been nothing but stress. I can‘t wait to have this over and done with. Then perhaphs I‘ll finally be able to continue and practice more, as to catch up to the rest of the people that have now overtaken me.

Hey. 19 here, same situation. Here are my 2 cents, if you don't mind: there will be no end to stress. School ends, maybe uni starts, then if you went uni, then uni ends (which chances are you stressed through because frankly, stress is a habit, at least in my experience it really is just that). Then "real life" begins. Making a living, building a family if you're into that, maybe kids - you're no machine. We are not built for stress lasting days, let's not talk about years, or months. I learnt it the hard way that if you don't rest and do what makes you feel energized, then your body and mind will take revenge on you. Last October I was forced to take a 2 week health break. One Tuesday I broke down crying when I had to face the fact, that I gotta go to school _again_, stress _again_, be deprived of time to make art _again_. My GP asked me repeatedly if he should call for an ambulance to take me in to a ward, fearing that this stress would make me suicidal. I said no, I just desperately need rest. For the 8 days I lay in bed, completely burnt out, unable to think straight because of utter exhaustion. I don't remember those days. After this I was sent to a mental hygiene counselor, who straight up told me: "life is not only grinding at school and expectations. You live to live, not to slave. Make art. You must, or else you're just torturing yourself." So I had to do just that. Now I limit my school time to x hours, do art in y, then I throw everything away and rest. I go to one of the top ranking high schools in my country, and fuck yes, the expectations are high. I will only deliver what I can, because I do not wish to leave a suicide note of my accomplishments at age 38. If I fail their bullshit expectations, then so be it. I want to live. Please, take care of yourself. There's only one you.

@@sophieszobonya3175 That is a very well thought out recommendation. You are doing far better at such a younger age than me. It took me 30 years to figure that out, especially with managing my time so that I can have time to draw and relax, while also (finally!) completing college as a non-traditional student. Stress has gone down considerably, and because I guard my time, I am doing very well in college as a result. Excellent time management does wonders all over, including practicing better health.

I've found that the best cure for art block is, ironically enough, to stop forcing yourself to try and do The Thing and instead, find some other creative project to do, forget about it for a bit. If you're struggling with writing a story, go draw some quick sketches of characters. Can't draw right now? Practice drawing anatomy and turn your brain off for a bit. Feeling tired from art? GET SOME SLEEP!!
Burnout can often also come from being exhausted or being hungry. I have a post-it note permanently taped to the side of me with the following acronym:
    Hungry,
    Angry,
    Lonely,
    Tired.
    H.A.L.T.
If you're feeling wrong or if you're feeling burned out, go down that list and ask yourself if you're experiencing any of those states. If you are, go remedy that first, THEN come back and get back to work. You'll get a LOT more work done if you're well-rested, well-fed, calm, and socially empowered.

I’m feeling a little guilty about not drawing. Sometimes I try to get my mind off things but that never works. like if I’m watching a cartoon my mind will go “you could be drawing fan art of that character right now”. And it just makes me sick. I want my art to look good but sometimes I rush it and it look terrible. Ugh it’s this sickening feeling and it’s worse than a art block. I want to get back into the game but my mind is telling me no. I’ve decided I’m going to relax and rest. Thank you for the good advice, I’ll keep it in mind every time I’m feeling down 😊

I thought I commented on the last video but I guess I didn't. I've been feeling overly stressed and ready to break or "burnout" so it certainly is timely.
Just this morning I was having a conversation on Discord with a RL friend of mine and he was talking about perfectionism which we both struggle with. My response to him was similar to something you talked about in this video.
I said, "Our brains only process and tolerate so much of the same thing at any given time. Some repetition is great but too much and the information starts getting tuned out."
It truly does apply to anything, ever heard someone say "It's like..." so many times it becomes the only thing notice? Or you start tuning that person out entirely? I know I Have!
If drawing is your passion and it becomes difficult, try another creative outlet for a bit. But like you said in this video, we shouldn't take weeks at a time off from our passion.
Also, dear god am I excited to see some Zelda fan art from you! Even if it is only a sketch or whatever, I'm sure it will be amazing. Your blending of nature and horror is always inspiring.
I need to look into your work a bit more. I know you did stuff for Fantasy Flight Games right? Their stuff as well as Darksouls just screams Adam Duff / Lucidpixul!
Being from MN FFG is definitely familiar to me as is so many of the other passions and hobbies you have. It is fun to have so much common ground with inspiring artists such as yourself.
Win your son back Adam, I believe in you!

Great video, Adam. I have a question and maybe you already touched on this subject before.
How do you go about rolling back on a large personal project. Meaning, you are biting more than you can chew.
For context: I am working on a piece that has a lot going on at a pretty large sizes so it can be printed.
The amount of details i need to add to the character and the horse is over whelming, at times i feel that i want to lower the resolution of the image so I wouldn't have to do so many details but I made it this far and I spent all this time on i don't want that to be wasted time. what are my options on something like this? do I put it on hold come back to it later?
to be honest, I feel like i spent a lot of energy on it, everything is a calculated process, there is no fun in this piece, there is no "cruise control" mode where I can rest my mind. I gotta think about the perspective, the lighting, the different type of materials the bonce light the back ground. its a lot
    anyway, what do you suggest.
Thank you for your time and videos, I really do appreciate them.

You made me think of something. The situation I'm about to describe may be too different from what this video is about-what if the person was forced to stop working (because of the virus, for example) and could not find the motivation to put any effort into learning something new in the meantime because of having to deal with the recent loss of two people they loved? That person would not do anything else beside taking walks or surfing the web while finding it difficult to be bored all the time.
