- Led Zeppelin isn’t just one of the greatest rock bands of all time. They also have some wild stories associated with them. For many years their guitarist Jimmy Page was said to worship the devil because of his obsession with English occultist Aleister Crowley. Then there is the story that drummer John Bonham drank 40 shots of vodka the night he died.
Another legend associated with the band claims that, if you play “Stairway To Heaven” in reverse, you'll hear satanic messages. But are these claims really true or are they just good stories? These are the false things you believe about Led Zeppelin.

What most people don't understand is that prior to 1972 only the lyrics to songs could by copyrighted. Artists routinely lifted musical arrangements from other works as it was considered normal. Different times, different rules, different norms.
also, music was once entertainment and stories passed down in a family, it wasn't always a mass marketing industry, some old songs still exist because people copied and shared
I was introduced to Led Zeppelin by my dad. He had seen the band several times in the 70s and I was a kid in the 80s and teen in the 90s. He’s not in the health he once was but we can still enjoy together and I will enjoy as long as I can

When The Levee Breaks is my favorite too. Immigrant Song ranks as 4th with me behind Nobody's Fault But Mine and Over The Hills. Until today, I thought Heartbreaker was 5th but, I love the hell out of Traveling Riverside Blues (in particular), Ramble On and Whole Lotta Love. I'll have to think on that :)

Well you're slightly mixed up on your facts. Page never said they didn't use any effects and he wasn't perpetuating rumors. He only showed where they'd recorded the drum track. They did in fact record it there and Andy Johns didn't deny that. The rumor that it was strictly the echo of the stairway came from some fans interpretation from that interview. It was in fact recorded in that stairway, but the Binson echo unit was used to get the effect. See Rick Beato's channel for a clear explanation of this, in case I've confused you. Thanks!

At 07:00, they're wrong about When The Levee Breaks. The drums were recorded in the foyer of the Headly Grange house. The reverb is natural the echo is electronic. It's a combination of both.
I would guess that bonafide Satan worshippers are rare, especially among rockers. Rockers who have had lyrical references to Satan and adorned their bodies and merchandise with and used as stage props satanic symbols have been largely pseudo-Satanists, people who don't actually pray to Satan or engage in satanic rituals but use Satan as a marketing tool.
Many of these same people would probably soil themselves if they had an actual demonic encounter.

The Yardbirds with Beck, Page, et al were in the 60s Antonioni flick ‘Blow-Up’ starring David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave. Rocking in Underground London.
They were definitely Led Zeppelin, not The New Yardbirds, when they played on Danish tv, Plant introduces them as such.

When they recorded When The Levee Breaks, they actually used both the stairwell and the effect. The stairwell was miced in a few different places and afterwards the effect was added.
They used a technique of letting the drums breathe not mic’ing individual drums but using 2 mics above the whole set!!!!
@@Steve_643 Engineer Andy Johns recorded the kit in the hall at Headley Grange using 2 Beyer M60 dynamic mics, unorthodox in itself as the overhead mics on a drum kit are usually small condenser phantom powered types (AKG 414 for example). Nothing else was mic'd, the massive snare sound is a combination of Bonham's power, the distance from the overhead mics and the way that allowed them to pick up the natural reverberation of the hall, and the double kick drum effect was from a Binson Echorec, Bonham playing the first hit and the second being the echo of it. The Binson was an alternative to the Echoplex tape loop style delay (it used a metal drum) and can be seen being used by Syd Barrett in that old film of Floyd playing Interstellar Overdrive at Abbey Road.

It's funny that Page & Plant both stated that Stairway suddenly came to them, as if from another source. It's also funny that no other band has multiple entire paragraphs in a song that make sense in both FWD & Reverse. I enjoy listening to Zep on occasion, but I do so knowing & rejecting the spirit behind them. Yeah, Crowley was a black magician & conjured demons, as well as being reputed to have branded some of his followers with 666 (reflected in the backwards "toolshed" lines) & to have sacrificed children....but of course he wasn't a satanist! Talk about splitting hairs. Once again, "there are none so blind..."
I Never Saw Led Zeppelin in Concert, but I Didn't see Robert Plant, and Jimmy Page in Concert in Concord California, Most Of The songs they Played were Led Zeppelin Songs. That Very Concert is on RUclips it was 1998

I thought it was Jon Entwistle, not Keith Moon who said "you guys will go down like a lead zeppelin" and that's where the name came from. You were correct about why they spelt it Led as they thought Americans would call them Leed Zeppelin.

The drum sound from "Levee.." is enhanced yes but try digging up the original dry mix (not slowed down as is the version you know) and there is definiite ambience in that room. As for stealing riffs, F- Richie Valens's estate. It's a rip off of Ooh My Soul by Little Richard as well as Valens's mother was given a writing credit when the band heard she had received no royalties. Please!
The entity residing in Plant, Page and Bonham while performing with Led Zeppelin… is ageless. They were merely vessels. No 20 year old has the capacity for this depth. Seriously. People who still believe there are no dark deals made with other worlds by these rockers….are so two dimensional. They flat out tell you what they did to achieve infamy. All of them do. Bob Dylan says he did it in an interview. They ALL sing about it. Led Zeppelin put sigils all over their albums. They believe in it…yet the people who listen to them, don’t. How odd. Many many musicians have openly talked about the deal they made, look up Ed Bradley interview with Bob Dylan and you will see exactly what Bob is talking about, making a deal to become famous. Accusing recording artists to hide messages backwards in their song was easy to do because you had to do a lot of awkward work to reverse the playing direction ofaudio eqiupment. But there are several turntables around today that offer the possibility to reverse direction by simply pressing a button. I do own such turntables and I also own a lot of records that supposedly contain backward messages including all studio records of Led Zeppelin. I haven't tried to hear the "backward messages" because I think its only lunatics that take these reports seriously. But for everyone to who thinks it is easy to accuse, for me it is easy to check.
I don't believe the insanity of Satanic influence if you play the music backwards. However even if it were true, it wouldn't matter. In most of the Western world religious freedom is a choice. Besides you'd think they'd pick on Ozzy and Black Sabbath more than Led Zeppelin. I adore both Ozzy and Sabbath, so no insult ok r I'm ok implication of either groups personal beliefs are intended but they were bold enough to write a love song from Lucifer and create a song and album titled Heaven and He'll, both personal favorites of mine. There were somethings else. I can't remember where I read it but it was stated that Jimmy Page made Robert and Bonzo take part in some unknown ceremony to ensure the success of the band. John Paul Jones declined to take part though. It may all come out (or not) in Jimmy's autobiography which he says will be published after he dies. David Bowie is alleged to have asked Jimmy Page to leave his house 'by the door or the window'. Bowie was interested in Jimmy's interest in the occult and was asking him questions but he got no answers from Jimmy, only a strange rictus smile. That's when he got spooked and asked Jimmy to leave. It was alleged that he then had his house exorcised. There was also an instance of someone meeting Robert after Bonzo's death and Robert is alleged to have told him he should keep away from Jimmy as he was evil. They seem to be friends now though. It's easy to look for things or people to blame when tragic things happen. Jimmy wasn't a Satan worshipper though. It's a bit of a myth that Aleister Crowley was, though he was certainly weird and deeply interested in the occult. Jimmy once bought Crowley's house but didn't live there much. He rented it out an eventually sold it. Jimmy declines to talk about personal matters.

@@burtonkephart6239 The prevailing view is that Crowley was not. You should read the wikipedia page on him. I don't think Page was a satanist anyway. He thought that Crowley was misunderstood. I think that Page was misguided and unwise but that's about the worst of it.

Obviously, someone who relates to someone like Crowley is willing to play with the dark side.. I think its obvious in their music that this is the case. When you see the tribute to Led Zeppelin played by Heart ( with the Obamas as guests of honour) all the band members were crying at the honour.. This was a very human moment- not satanic. It brought their truly human and loving nature back to me.

They didn't release singles not because peter grant wanted to sell albums or whatever, but rather they mostly didn't write songs designed to be singles... They wrote songs fit for an album experience
And either way if you look at their catalogue, very few of their songs are under 4-10 minutes long, especially after the 3rd album, which means they literally couldn't release them as singles...

Most true but they never released a single. The record company did once and Peter Grant went apeshit. Also they played a few concerts under the name The New Yardbirds to fulfil an existing contract that Jimmy had. Immediately after that they became Led Zeppelin.
I don't know how many they released but a friend has " The Immigrant Song" with " Hey Hey What can I do" on the flip side.

I didn't know JW Bush was a news reporter? Btw Spirit were a great band! Nature's Way, Animal Zoo, Fresh Garbage! The hits go on with that band. They were from America,and everyone knew of them. That bald guy playing the drums was Randy California, dude ruled man. And I was born in 1976. Both bands were well before my time. God bless my Dad who had every vinyl worth having when I was a child. I use to love opening the albums and looking at the big pictures of the bands and all the interesting art.

This LedZep track DOES contain intelligible and articulated words when played backwards.
But he fails to mention that during the research they had various/ random sound techs and studio engineers look into it and the concession was the following.
"Any track that has a backwards masked message "WILL MAKE SOME NOISE WHEN PLAYED FORWARDS" even if subtle..... but any trained sound engineer can isolate all this for review.....
Bottom line...."Thiers NO sound on this track FORWARDS..
