    Lyrics:
    [1. Tide Pools]
    When the ebbing tide retreats
    Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
    In a short-lived galaxy
    Each microcosmic planet
    A complete society
    A simple kind of mirror
    To reflect upon our own
    All the busy little creatures
    Chasing out their destinies
    Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea...
Wheels within wheels in a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time we lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
    [2. Hyperspace]
    A quantum leap forward
    In time and in space
    The universe learned to expand
    The mess and the magic
    Triumphant and tragic
A mechanized world out of hand
    Computerized clinic
    For superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band
    In their own image
    Their world is fashioned
    No wonder they don't understand
Wheels within wheels in a spiral array
A pattern so grand and complex
Time after time we lose sight of the way
Our causes can't see their effects
    [3. Permanent Waves]
    Science, like nature
    Must also be tamed
With a view towards its preservation
    Given the same
    State of integrity
It will surely serve us well
    Art as expression
    Not as market campaigns
    Will still capture our imaginations
    Given the same
    State of integrity
It will surely help us along
    The most endangered species
    The honest man
    Will still survive annihilation
    Forming a world
    State of integrity
    Sensitive, open and strong
Wave after wave will flow with the tide
And bury the world as it does
Tide after tide will flow and recede
Leaving life to go on as it was...

You were wondering what Neil did after the tragedies, he still had his wife for many months after the loss of their daughter and relied on each other to cope with it all. Just when they were starting to move forward with life, his wife had some pains and went to a doctor, she totally unexpectedly found out she had cancer, a total shock as up to then she had felt fine. She died shortly after that which also came as a surprise shock to Neil, expecting at least months or a couple years with her and a chance to fight the cancer off.
After Neil's tragedies and the band stopping (they never broke up) to give Neil time to mourn and decide later what to do about Rush, Neil mostly road his motorcycle around North America reflecting on it all. He actually wrote a novel about his life journey called 'Ghost Rider.' Alex and Geddy just gave Neil his space, knowing they would be there for him if he needed, and they didn't know for several years if they would ever play together or not. But Neil finally made it through to the other side and Rush returned like an explosion around 2K1 or 2K2, he even re-married and had another daughter.
The band stayed together until their last, 40th anniversary tour in 2015, after which they retired because the wear and tear on Neil's body from all those years of drumming like two drummers finally caught up with him. Several years later he was diagnosed with brain cancer and he succumbed to it and passed in 2020.

If you get a chance, check out the studio version of this song. You get an extra verse and more importantly, an extra guitar solo.

Amazing to see how they can pull this off live. So many time changes and they re so in synch throughout. I know it’s one of their favorites to play live and it really shows in this video.

An epic sonic and lyrical song about social awareness, balance and the treck to find a righteous cohesiveness among ourselves.

Same tour, but I was at the Tampa show. But yeah, can you imagine standing in front of Alex playing this (as well as the entire first side of 2112, amongst other gems)… Great song and thanks again for reacting to it!

This is my favorite live performance of this song: Geddy's vocal at the beginning is beautiful and haunting, along with Alex's chords; the musicianship is amazing overall, and the lyrics are deep, as usual. I also like how they pushed the tempo here (they did a live performance of this song later on in their career, but the tempo was noticeably slower, which is why I prefer this version).
