@@ZariLutusLike what are you even talking about? The whole scene is completely different. All of the artistic direction has been removed. • @PinkFluffyAlex

@@RoyKoopaling I mean there's certainly artistic direction still evident. Maybe it's not the same direction as the original, but the framing of Makoto when he pulls the trigger, the expressions on everybody, the framing of various shots, and the way the shadow moves all had art direction.
Besides, the release of P3R hasn't eradicated those scenes from existence. You can still go watch them if you prefer seeing those, but there still is art and talent throughout Reloaded.

I think it’s the transition from 2D to 3D the original game had a stylistic animated cutscenes that gave the scene a eerie and dreamlike feeling and the pacing of the scene does seem to be a bit slower but not terribly so and part of the quickness of the original was most definitely because of budget constraints.
The scene overall does its job well it introduces Magician creepily and unsettling,Yukari’s hesitation and failure to summon her persona, the Protagonist’s creepy smile as he summons and Thanatos ripping itself out of Orpheus then brutalizing Magician.

    2) People that actually played the PS2 version and noticed the changes
Really, the least you guys could do is just watch the original awakening animation to see why people feel like it was downgraded.
It’s a tonal thing too, I can point out two things they took out that I don’t get
    1) Originally, the evoker lands at his feet, shining in a puddle of blood before he picks it up.
    2) As he puts it up to his head, he hesitates more, he’s shaking, breathing heavy, and you can see him sweating before he smiles and pulls the trigger. I swear bro was just extra suicidal in the remake and couldn’t wait to shoot himself.

People that are hating Makoto Yuki’s Awakening in Persona 3 Reload are clearly blinded by nostalgia & just want to hate on new things just for the sake of hating. And the people that say Makoto Yuki’s Awakening look outdated in the original Persona 3 don’t understand at all when the PS2 had its limitations at that time. Both nostalgia & recency bias can be negative sometimes. As someone who’s been a Persona fan for 4 years, I love the original version of this Awakening a bit more BUT, I do really love the Awakening in Reload as well & it’s very good in its own way. Yeah it sucks that it isn’t 2D animated like in the original Persona 3, 4, & 5, but Makoto’s Awakening in 3D animation really impressed me & gave me chills. So either way, it’s a win-win for me.

So I want to say this for all the overly nostalgic people who I have been seeing insulting others for enjoying this game to literally knock it off. You are embarrassing yourself and being disrespectful towards others over a measly game. Those who said that this scene is rubbish saying it looks sloppy are clearly overly biased based on nostalgia. A game that came out 17 years ago can’t look better than a game that came out now. Technology has evolved over the years and this includes both 2D and 3D cutscenes. If persona 3’s old anime cutscene was redone now it still wouldn’t give the same eerie and dark vibe the original had. What made the old one so eerie was the fact that its art style was old. This doesn’t just apply to games. I was once watching an anime and that show came out in 1996. They decided to do a remake of a very popular episode from the beginning of the series. Even though it was exactly the same, its haunting vibe was gone. I realized it was because as time went on the art style became really smooth and better looking and so it lost that old time feel.

    • @domelapse6435
      @domelapse6435 6 месяцев назад +2

I agree people shouldn't be insulting people but man your take here is insane. Yes, in fact 17 year old animation can look better than game engine generated graphics(like here). That's like saying CGI is always better than hand drawn animation because "its technology". Now with all that said they can definitely create ambience similar to the older game if they wanted to. If you played through the game their are many scenes they animated that looked quite good and carried the same sort of style(end boss sequence events come to mind). Their are a multitude of stylistic choices here they chose to change. The art direction here was just not intended to give off the same creepy vibe, and frankly the animation here looked much less polished. And if your ok with that then fine. But claiming it just cant be done or people are looking at it through nostalgia lenses is extremely disingenuous.

TLDR: original was a great scene, never replicated
I was pretty disappointed when i played reload and saw this, watching the original again after reload the first thing i noticed was how the sound design in the original was goddamn nuts, it's got such a bold dynamic range of volume, from the abrasive to silence it isn't afraid to make itself known. the shot composition was all quick cuts and super closeups with an uncanny tilt to the shots before awakening, they were hard leveraging the fact that P3 was not a household thing and before this point a good amount of players wouldn't know how a persona is summoned in this game so there is a real respect for that tension whereas portable and reload seem to either assume prior knowledge and don't keep you guessing till the last second like in the original, they lack that confidence of this original. i would be remiss not to mention the music as well, i dont't mind the new unavoidable battle but the original is so much more this scene, it's so much more raw and the track preceding it is far more responsive to the action of the scene, its absence is really felt in reload and yeah, i'm not even gonna talk about portable (Master of shadows havin' ass).
Other incredible bits: use of bold colour behind thanatos (red), white for both the shadow and pharos, it focuses the action so clearly and adds real punch especially with the wonderful reverse shot of the shadow being cut in two to a stark red background and accompanying mirrored sound effect. before the awakening the shots lack cohesion, so confusing and scattered but once the protagonists has his persona the action is directed with far more directionality, each shot and movement within flows into the next, even in the sound, i mentioned how the mirrored slice sfx helped make a shot/reverse shot on block colour effortlessly readable but the continuity of orpheus' roar coming through the command room monitors compressed immediately lets us know that they can see what we do without the need for establishment, it all makes the viewer feel a lot more in control and comfortable, this is completely lost in reload where everything is really static and uninteresting. Lastly is the Evangelion in the room, yup i can't help drawing comparisons between the stylings of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the whole of Persona 3's presentation, from ikustki in the command room with his opaque reflected glasses as a gendo type figure, the hard shading and eye closeups, use of painful sounds and pitches for effect, the monthly shadows coming at regular intervals like the angels where it turns out at the end that the final great obstacle was a variant of humanity itself or it's desire (for death or to escape it). the most telling here was the barely controlled beast that is the protagonist's protector. and yeah, that's not in vogue anymore as it was when p3 was released, even EVA has changed but regardless, they must have known how impactful this scene has been on the tone of the game and getting it right is imperative for a game trying to recreate that atmosphere. I do not think p3 re is trying to do that (at least so far), its brighter, nicer, SEES become actual friends far quicker than in the original where they only really start becoming real friends later on and the whole thing feels a little more like an isolating experience, (can only control the protagonist) i don't think persona 3 reload has to be just like the original, i'm enjoying the game a lot but it hasn't replaced the original as i thought it might, and now im glad that it doesn't (as long as you have an emulator or ps2/3)

Lmao, if you're deaf maybe. Sounds horrendous, completely muted and subdued compared to the original.
Granted that's not the only reason this scene sucks, the lack of the heartbeat and slow pointing of the evoker to build tension whilst the original spliced inbetween various scenes the MC has seen, the poor cinematography, the lack of oomph in the sound effect when the evoker goes off, the pacing is awful. Makoto takes more time to breath and become resolute before he fires it, along with the drop of sweat indicating how afraid he is. Here it's way too quick.
I'm not even going to comment on how bad Thanatos wretches himself from Orpheous, it's not feral or animalistic it how he rips free like the original, it's literally just he puts his arms up he inflates a bit and blows up, doesn't exactly portray it like he's ripping himself free.

It’s kind of not what they had imagined, at all. Don’t get me wrong, the Reload scene looks super cool and had me hooked. The problem is that the tone is completely opposite of what the original was going for. Those few seconds where you’re left wondering whether or not you’re going to pull the trigger and the silence of it all puts a level of tension unseen in P4 and P5. The P3R scene doesn’t do that and instead leads into the cool factor of summoning, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it destroys the tension behind using the evoker (which at this point is just a gun to the audience)

Is this my personal opinion that this scene is pretty mid it lacks a lot of the flare of the original, the intensity, and the brutality and certain artistic details were lost like camera angles and sweat drop I personally find the original was a lot better it's way more impactful, anders there's a lot more punch to it. That scene really sets the mood it has an awesome buildup ,one that really keeps you on the edge. But this one loses a lot of that, and the atmosphere just feels off compared to the original 2D animation. So far, this is the only thing I don't like about reloading everything else has been pretty good.

If you've played the original your opinion would likely be different. I like this version of the cutscene, but it doesn't hold a candle to the awakening in the original game. The whole vibe and tone are completely different. This just feels like a watered down version of the really well animated cutscene that still holds up to this day, and better fits the style Persona 3 aims to achieve. The original cutscene is just a lot more engaging and well done.

I get ATLUS wants to flex their higher quality animations (and they are indeed better than FES and definitely portable), but they completely missed the mark with Thanatos bursting out of Orpheus. In the original Thanatos was tearing himself out of Orpheus violently, and when he succeded Orpheus' body ended up shattering as his pieces went flying, his head was seen falling and the sound design fit a metal body getting wrecked, the scene even lingered on his body twitching as Thanatos did so giving you time to process what is happening. Here Orpheus' body seems like a rubber balloon, his head was pulled down into his body much slower than the original animation giving the idea that Thanatos isn't as forceful, yet his body burst out far quicker afterwards giving you little time to comprehend that something was violently tearing itself out, not to mention that a more liquidy burst sfx was used when Thanatos appeared instead of the metallic sfx of the original. There is also no evidence of Orpheus having even been there after Thanatos bursted out aside from some red and black swirls.

Actually, I'd say it's *fast* and clunky. Like, it feels as if these new devs just wanted to rush through this moment because they thought "Whatever, everyone's seen this before so let's just get it over with."
The original had so much more tension and weight - like watching a horror and/or mystery movie. The MC pulling the trigger on himself had dramatic flashes, lingering shots of him dripping with sweat, and just conveyed the overall energy of this game well before they're introduced in the main narrative.
You can *feel* the "Shadow of Death" in the moment. *This* just feels...so different.
