@PhillyThug absolutely agree. Too many people are becoming brainwashed by him. What right does he have to tell us how to run our country. It's time he was stopped
The very last words on this video got to the heart of the matter. Age verification. How do you verify someone's age online? Kids will just lie about their age and how do you prevent that?
An excuse I hear a lot from Americans, is that Musk is entitled to use his freedom of speech like everyone else; at best this is naive apoligism. Isn't that the point? He isn't like everyone else; not only is he a fantastically wealthy individual with immense internet reach, he also appears to be influencing Donald Trump's thinking/policies at the business end. I'm not sure why MAGA people feel so sanguine about an unelected person having direct input into future policy; originally, I found the Nazi comparisons overdone and a little overegged; but this development of an unelected person having so much say in government, completely undermines the principle of representation via the ballotbox - apparently with the tacit approval of a large section of society?
And when he's folded into the US government under trump, doesn't that mean when he bans people he doesn't like on twitter will be a violation of the 1st amendment? Also, the reason why MAGA people are sanguine is the same reason as Farage et al are happy about the foreign national Musk interfering with UK pollitics: he's on their side. Once that changes, they'll want to lynch him.
Speaking (unfortunately) as an american, the vast majority of citizens here absolutely do not approve of an unelected person basically acting as the true president-elect along with his convicted felon currently disqualified from taking office wannabe dictator whom he has purchased. He is and has been by far the worst spreader of disinformation and misinformation. He is a threat in that way to any democratic country. If you are able to ban his platform, it will only help improve the lives of everyone there. I truly hope this can be pushed through. Freedom of speech does not include hate speech and it never should!
Most American's are so dumb they don't realise Elon's actions are actually the precise constitutional violation their forefather's tried to protect them against.
Isn't it great that smart, reasoned, adults like this MP are now in government? And what a fantastic advocate for social media controls the bereaved mother is.

Absolutely! Public discourse will go on, as it has for centuries in this country. One Nation must make stand - may Great Britain lead the way. Declare social media are publishers and therefore subject to all the rules and regulations thereof. Let the word ring out from this nation that we value free speech, but you will be accountable for what you say! If Americans can prosecute their citizens for threating the life of the President or shouting fire in a theatre, then Britons can prosecute for slander, libel and the vile hate spewed on social media.
@@meadow9 Brazil did indeed, and the speed at which Musk backed down to their demands as a result was remarkable. He's a blowhard and a bully but if our elected officials actually hit him where it hurts he'll surrender almost immediately.
I'd go further than most. We need to find ways to address social media addiction as a real danger. It is making people truly unwell it makes them a danger to people around them and so I do see that there needs to be access limitations implemented. I get that many people manage to have a healthy relationship with social media but I do feel that in the next 10 years the mental well being of social media addicts will drop off a cliff and something will need to be done. I haven't worked out what that would look like but it's coming and it's coming fast.

I agree with the idea but i think it's a bit naive, as an example Overwatch was the king of that type of shooter and remained so for years due to their established consistency and formerly good standards that took an entire shift in the gameplay and player focus when Blizzard dropped they're standards. This is like Twitter and Facebook being Overwatch. There are alternatives but they're always fighting a continuously uphill battle because of resources and brand
I'm not from England but I have loved Jess for years and I am so disgusted with this whole situation that I don't even know what to think except that these people need to be stopped not just musk but the lot of them
This might be controversial but I've actually done some data recovery for a few relatives of victims & the very first one taught me that the deceased do need their privacy respected too because there are often deeply personal things that they clearly didn't want anybody aware of, let alone family, & handing it all over is a betrayal to their memory, especially if it would only cause more pain & suffering. I get that everybody needs someone to blame & I absolutely helped provide potential evidence as, in my cases, they were obviously mental health/DWP failures. Everybody has a degree of duality though & some private stuff that should stay private, even after death; where mental health is concerned especially there can be a lot of confusion etc that can be misconstrued. Now despite that I do think there should be an independent & discrete auditing system available to parents but it's not something I'd trust our main parties to provide for the relatives of victims; especially where the DWP is concerned as Labour, Lib Dems (in coalition) and the Conservatives all have a history of assisting them in obstructing justice which is still going on under the current government.
I think we have personal responsibility to engage with social media, it is on us to do that. Yes it can affect mental health but one has individual agency and I think this is tricky territory. Computers in rooms under a certain age should not be allowed and I think parents have responsibility to parent. I worked with young people some years previously and social media was used and if they wanted to look at something they absolutely would. Social media should not be used under a certain age and that would need verification.
The regulation here already exists - it's the parents. If you're not watching what's going on with your kids, on their devices, then the fault is on you. If you're not aware of what they're doing on a specific service (TikTok, for example), then don't let them use it. It really is that simple. The MP here gives an analogy about monitorig children (soft play, climbing frame, etc). The person monitoring there is the parent. The same holds true for kids on their devices - if you're not doing that then you're not protecting your own children.
@ I completely agree. As awful it as about this kid, he must have been suffering. Parental responsibility needs to be more in focus. What I meant about verifying is some form of ID, certainly on adult websites.

@@Lawrence4000-s3k the report was done by the last government, what's the point of spending more taxpayers money on the same result. If Farage wants to personally pay for the inquiry then fair enough.
If you want to protect your children you have to speak to them you can't just turn them loose into the world without having serious conversations with them and making sure they're on the same page don't forget as much as you like to think your children are empty-headed some children are very crafty and very smart I will find ways to circumvent anything that you put in front of them so you have to make an effort to make sure that what's in front of them in real life are the things that are going to enrich their lives and keep them off of social media and out of situations where if they're not smart enough to deal with it they are not there
The online safety act effectively ends secure communication by effectively banning end to end encryption. Why don’t parents just configure their routers to stop devices accessing certain sites. It’s not hard and you have a responsibility to learn what your child uses
Growing up in the 60s we were completely restricted about what we could do where we could go and how much television we were allowed to watch anything other than that was subject to some serious consequences which most of us chose not to engage in so we did what we were supposed to do kids now know what they're supposed to do but they don't feel like there's any consequences so they do whatever they want
The people have GOT the TOO SCARED MEDIA like the...BBC ITV etc... (whom...are too scared to report on pedophile rapist torture molesters/ gangs!!!) Have of you...have any children???
As always we are so far behind and the fact that this mp who looks about the same age as me has only realised how bad social media is now through some kids is depressing. I hope that things get done to stop things like Twitter and FB being so horrible for everyone but I never have faith in our governments to actually put in proper laws that can actually effect them instead as usual being weak and given them easy loopholes to get around it or just ignore them because the fines aren't big enough. Lets hope my cynical mind is wrong on this and we actually get proper change to stop the scourge of billionairs ruining society for bigger profits and control.
100% agree. more legislation needs to be put in place to stop misinformation and we need to hold our leaders accountable for how relevant they are to their constituency
@a-JK42 It's obvious nothing is done because of the companies power and how out of touch our politicians are. We can see more mps coming in that do or are starting to understand but its as always little too late and again profit over our health and safety.
The further people could read (I have) another inquiry would be pointless. Data on the heritage or ethnicity of grooming gangs is not available. Not all victims would come forward either, so only those confident enough or with a political bias would do so. Anyone actually concerned by CSE should read the dozens of inquiries and reports already published. The far-right AND Reform/Tories are attempting to make this a race issue against Pakistani-heritage men.
Which is reason enough to have a full inquiry, then no-one could 'make it' fit their personal agenda as the truth would be there for all to see. As it stands there's far too much he said, she said going on. The refusal to thoroughly investigate such horrendous crimes against children is questionable at best, no matter where you sit politically. An enquiry need not have stopped the child protection bill at all, the two things could easily have been done. Things like 'victims didn't want to come forward', 'political bias' (they were children) really aren't good enough excuses to not investigate this whole sorry episode.
There has been past enquiries that ended with personal slander from Priti Patel in the past that the tories never implemented. Another inquiry sounds good but it's adding noise to a shouting match and it won't help anything but increase the amount of people complaining about bias
Honestly, I would bet money that she would at least discover something she wasn’t expecting if she digs through her sons socials, if not just that something actually connected to his death. I’m 25 and people with young children that are over 35 or just don’t really understand the internet have NO idea how COOKED children are. ( edit typo )
Bump up the age limit and expect children to manage their children. We are also no the oldest democracy in the world. Also not sure what that has to do with anything. The majority of the population only got the vote last century....
Jess used the same language herself, several times, in the past. Not 'bullying and harassment' when she uses it, eh? Stones and glass houses, Jess. Stones and glass houses.
One thing that absolutely flabbergasted me is the badge of honour Phillips claimed for being by the side of hundreds of victims, up and down the country, often bleeding from the attacks, as they reported their trauma to the police. And she'll happily be there for hundreds more. I remember the way Christopher Hitchens portrayed Mother Theresa, as a fiendish ghoul who fed from the suffering of those she "helped", for warped self-aggrandizement and I can't help but picture Jess Phillips in the same way. Just get to the root of the problem, call it out, then rip that root out! Stop dealing with the effects of the problem - deal with the problem! Not good enough to blame "men!" 9 out of 10 "men" have never violated a woman or girl in their lives and wouldn't dream of doing, either. Publicly flog and give hard labour sentences to sexual offenders.
Social Media is simply a form of interactive software that hosts some form of content. The problem with trying to control software is that it only works after the fact and for every TikTok, Insta or WhatsApp, there are a million other variations already available. Restricting childrens access to the hardware that is capable of delivering the content is what Governments need to seriously consider.
I believe Twitter should be banned before TikTok. I rarely use either of these social media apps because I often encounter a lot of horrible content and toxicity. I only use them occasionally to post my artwork, but I don’t scroll through my feed. However, I don’t think a ban on Twitter is likely to happen; who knows, though.
Children are not property. Everyone has a right to privacy. And though sad, no, you shouldn't get to breach their privacy because they are dead. In the same way that your children don't get access to your private information when you die
Of course children are not property but obviously as a parent you need to make sure your child is safe and yes I agree that everyone deserves privacy but ultimately safety trumps that if necessary.
As parents, we get to monitor our children's media. It is extremely important that we know what they are seeing. If platforms refuse to let us parents see our kids' media, we are able to simply delete the social media platform, their accounts, and even take away their phones.
@@drummingtildeath Idk, I feel like that's too invasive. A big part of a teen's growth is through private conversation and play with their friends. If you were to compare to real life, you're asking to have the ability to eavesdrop in every conversation your child has - which just seems really off to me. So, idk about being able to view the actual conversations your children are having, but maybe being able to see who they are conversing with would be a reasonable comparison to irl. In regard to conversations after their death, I think that should be left to the police.
@@ria.ethyria you're talking about teenagers. I was under the impression that this was a conversation about children, not specifically teenagers. How would you verify who they're talking to? Just look at the name and picture? Seems naive.
Considering all the things that we already know about social media it behooves parents to sit down with their children and actually speak to them not just about social media but how to behave on the streets how to behave when people are not behaving properly that seems to be overlooked it's never in any discussion that I'm seeing or hearing online anymore people just expect everything to be fine and dandy without taking the bull by the horns that is not going to be the case my parents set us down and gave us the rundown on a number of things before we were allowed on the world and it's not happening anymore and it's in a way the fault of the parents do not take that responsibility you can't let your kids run the show. They don't have the brains they don't have the experience.
So we want a government enquiry without anyone in the government.... I don't like them either but that's ridiculous, would you trust a multinational company to do it instead?
There has been a 6 year, 200 million pound enquiry which the Tories completely ignored the recommendations, would have affected too many of their pervy friends.
I agree it's very dangerous when money and technology is used for wrong purposes. The real question I would like to ask whether these billionaires should be allowed to have some ridiculous amount of money to make them feel crazy to think that they are above every power??, Or is it the time we should limit the super wealthy and give it away a little to the people who are really in need ?

This is what we've been saying! The signs of fascism have been there all along.
You have unelected, non-American born and non-politicians in office in the "most powerful country in the world." The US is a joke.

Seems to me we need more competition via better anti-trust laws - not more regulation.
Can we all move on from influencers and social media in 2025. It makes absolutely no one happy
Where are MI6 and James Bond when you need 'Dr Evil' dealt with?
😂
I'd love that
I'm not from England but I have loved Jess for years and I am so disgusted with this whole situation that I don't even know what to think except that these people need to be stopped not just musk but the lot of them
This might be controversial but I've actually done some data recovery for a few relatives of victims & the very first one taught me that the deceased do need their privacy respected too because there are often deeply personal things that they clearly didn't want anybody aware of, let alone family, & handing it all over is a betrayal to their memory, especially if it would only cause more pain & suffering.

Yes Lola! North East represent 💪🏼 you legend for doing an interview with these guys xxx
Imagine supporting your culture being taken away
I said this a few months back - twitter ban I’m open to this tbh

And what happens when the other-side call for bans on your preferred media outlets? If it wasn't for Musk the government would have done precisely nothing about the report.
@RichardFraser-y9t totally, it's gone too far now. The right already has an unfair advantage with the amount of right wing media outlets and tabloids and now we have musk doing what he's doing. The centre ground is disappearing fast.
Please let this happen, Facebook too.

Ban the hell out of it
i would really support this, twitter is a breeding ground for things you shouldnt be able to find online
Ban it, makes absolutely no difference to me. Never used it.
But it is a race issue? Pakistani men were gang r-ping working class white girls. Why did they prey only on white girls?

Blocking an entire country from accessing a website is a bit north Korea-ish mate
And ban Facebook and Amazon too.
Should be in the home office
Twitter is the modern version of poison pen letters.
@@ria.ethyria yes, but it needs to be monitored by their parents or safe adults.
