CNC Cutting a Carbon Fiber Drone Frame In My Garage

  • Feels good to be back into making videos!
    Thought I'd come back and make a good one.
    This video just shows what all goes into a typical CNC job for me. It can be a very time consuming hobby especially at first when you are just starting out and learning how to use a CNC machine. It is very rewarding when you become proficient at using it though.

    I've recently started cutting my very own drone frame. It's called the Lu5
    Best part about this frame: IT FITS EVERYTHING!!!
    Being able to fit any type of electronics, being easy to build and very durable were my key requirements for this frame. You can literally fit whatever video system, FC/ESC, Camera, etc. I've got all the mounting options and have a bunch of 3d printed part designs for it as well.
    My machine: Shapeoko 4 XL with bitsetter and bitrunner upgrades
    End mills that are similar to what I have:
    a.co/d/fyJ3Hfg
    That is a variety pack but I recommend getting 1.5, 2mm, and 3mm if you plan to do a lot of cutting.

    Your dog chasing its tail killed it! LOL Great video, that Sony ZV-1 looks great! Such an awesome little camera. I wish I would have bought one, instead I bought the Lumix ZS100 thinking it would match the color grade to my bigger Lumix.

    Beautiful setup there! I've always wanted to get a router but was put off at the thought of carbon dust everywhere, especially with it being hazardous. However your setup looks relatively dust free, once you've got good suction. Brilliant!

    Great video 👍 It’s good to see more RUclips content on cutting frames (and carbon in general. When I got started I had to just figure it out too, so it’s good to see that we’re using similar feeds and speeds. Definitely something you have to have an interest in as it’s only profitable in bulk. I’d like to see more videos! 😃

      Thanks for watching and subscribing! Yes, I haven’t really seen much content on this topic yet so I figured I’d share my experience on it. I’m planning to do a deeper dive with each part like design, setting up toolpaths, material cost, and processing the parts after they’re cut. Stay tuned for that!

I’ll keep an eye out 👍 Regarding how China get their chamfered/radiused edges, I imagine that they cut one side after the initial cut, then load up the parts in a custom jig/fixture and run a second operation to add the chamfer or radius on the other side - I know that CNC madness uses a jig/fixture for chamfering

      @@markstevensfpv3722 ok that’s good to know! Might have to experiment with a fixture like that and give it a try. I bought some chamfer bits awhile back so I will definitely give it a try. Just seems so time consuming for a small step like that lol.

    You can use a 90 degree chamfer bit to clean up the burred edges, though only on one side, and you might want to use tabs for the contour cut so the part stays perfectly in place when you run the chamfer tool around the contour. You'd have to make a jig to be able to flip the part and run the other side, or cut some symmetrical reference holes where you can screw it back down to the spoilboard in the same spot. It's a lot of work for one-off parts but not so terrible if you're doing multiple runs of the same parts.

      Great advice! Using a chamfer bit can tidy up the edges and tabs for the contour cut will ensure stability. Making a jig or using reference holes can help with flipping the part. It's more effort for one-off parts, but worthwhile for multiple runs.

    Nice work! I never saw your videos when I was starting my drone frame cutting journey. Edit: Heard your speeds and feeds towards the end of the video. Ive been doing 450mm/s at .5mm deep.

      Right on! Yeah I may have been doing some slightly different feeds since that video. Lately I’ve been using 1.5mm bits for pretty much everything and run it at 300 with 1.2-1.5mm deep per pass. Seems to work well for me.

      Thank you. I use medium thick ca glue with activator to attach them.

    your edges is called chamfer's and you can use 45 degree special chamfer tool to do that. However you will need to map out your zero hights every 5cm to get even 1mm chamfered edges.

    I thought about trying to cut my own frames but now that I see what it takes - I'm out LOL. You have an awesome setup but everywhere I look I just see hours and hours and dollars and dollars. Nope, not for me, I'll just pay someone like you who has the skills and equipment to cut them for me. Great job on the video.

      Haha yeah it’s way more work than I ever anticipated. Not to mention the money I have tied up into material and the setup. I’ll be doing another video taking a closer look at overall cost of material, equipment and how much time it takes for a typical job. Will be an eye opener for most people in this hobby I think. Will also show how much we take China MFGs for granted when we buy our frames/parts from them. Stay tuned!

    Hi Luke nice video, you can easily chamfer your frame with a 45 deg angle cutter, they are available at different angle actually. It will be time consuming as it increase run time but at your level I don’t think it’s a concern Vs manual filing.
    Another solution who is what China manufacturing does for mass production is sand blasting, but you will need to invest in a sand blasting machine, at your level probably not worth.

    Hi I cut my own frame too but using fusion360 and a GRBL cutting software. Just wondering what software you use and what software was in the opening of the vid!?

      If you are cutting and getting a rough back cut I’d say cut slower and make sure your offset is set to a -1mm…… I’ll looking for my next cnc machine

      This is carbide create. Came with my shapeoko machine for free. Works relatively well for design and it’s seamless for use with this machine.

      @@unger_cnc thanks for the reply Luke. Does look like you are getting great results from it for sure. I cut my own modular frames on a Sainsmart 3018 prover. I do my devs on it and with be selling via a third party cutter. The plotting of your software looked super easy

    I use to run a gantry cnc mill basically doing the same thing to up to 3 inch plate steal, aluminum. and from time to time lexan using a liquid cooling system of course. Hated aluminum due to it being so grabby, slow, and ruining end-mills if you tried to push the jobs to much. Nice seeing you wear a mask even with a particulates vacuum...

      p.s. rounded edges is called chamfering and can be done using a double chamfer end mill

      You trying to replace the plastic ducts? If you can design a file that would replace it, I can cut it. I don’t have that drone/upgrade kit to reference from.

      Yeah I’m using blue painters tape with CA glue. Ive got another video on my channel about workholding methods. I show an example of how I prep a sheet onto a wasteboard.

      @@Jacob-og9pz Yep I design all my own stuff. Kinda the main reason I bought a cnc router lol.
      Go on thingiverse and type in ledroneclub or quadwrex
      Those guys designed some sweet frames and they are open source. They have all the dxf files you can load up into your cad program to modify them or just cut them as they are.

      Yeah there’s a few suppliers that can be found on Facebook. I order my sheets from hobby carbon. RJX is another option but more expensive.
