- Today I needed to make some carbon parts and I thought it would be a good job to have the camera running.
There is some weird audio problems at the start with my 3D printer running, if you're interested stick with it. or don't, you're busy, I totally get it :)
Cutting carbon on a CNC router is super easy and fun, I highly recommend giving it a try.
The part I made today is for my EVO air boxes, if you want to check them out you can find them here

Hope you enjoy this one, if you have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch and as always, thanks for spending this time with me!

I have never seen anyone else use the piece of paper to set the Z height before. So quick and simple. And, thanks so much for the feeds and speeds; that's really going to help on an upcoming project.
I think the paper trick was popular when I first got the machine and was learning how to use it (on RUclips of course!). I agree it's a nice quick method when taking a full depth of cut, not ideal if you're actually machining something with important Z heights.
Thanks so much for checking out my video, I'm glad you found some value in it!
Super useful video! Thank you so much, this is exactly what I needed and more.
Fantastic, glad you found some value it it!
touch of tool on carbon is easy since carbon is conductive. Just place one on the tool and the other aligator clip anywhere on carbon
Upload more cnc videos, they are useful for me and always show your settings.
Thanks
Thanks for checking it out, I'm building a new cabinet for my CNC to hopefully make filming a little easier in the future 👍
I think that it would be beneficial to have a vacuum extension that will travel all the way down to the drill bit to really get all of the carbon fiber dust cleaned out
Usually do, the cover was off for filming 👍
Great video mate. Im looking at getting a router to make custom parts for my rc cars.
Thanks Gav!
I recently bought a new Bulkman 3D queenbee, bloody great machine! Definitely a must have if you want to make custom RC parts👍
Great work for CNC cutting. Other cutting speed way will save the cost.
@Adam Taylor A year and a bit down the road and its still a great video, but as someone who wants to cut carbon fibre, is this the right way of doing it in regards to carbon fibre dust or Would the machine be safer from dust inside a sealed acrylic unit? Also is the dust shield an OEM part or something you made please?
I've found using a dust extractor with the boot works well for me. Coolant will also keep the dust down but restricts the use of a dust collector and I don't find it as effective when releasing the parts.
I also have a industrial air purifier in my shop that I run when cutting carbon or mdf to help with any dust in the air.
The dust boot is something I've 3d printed from thingyverse 👍
Great video!
Would you mind sharing the exact end mill you are using?
If you search CNC PCB cutters you'll find some 👍

🔥 super
Thanks for your great reviews. Do you think it is possible to cut 4mm carbon fiber plates with the 3040? Thank you
I'd say this wouldn't be a problem, I have used a 700w spindle and 1mm doc in the past. Carbon is very easy to cut, let me know how you go!
Have a link for the bit you used ? Great vid
If you search PCB or corncob bits you will find them. I prefer straight carbide, they leave the best finish but I have tried many different kinds from expensive to the cheapest of cheap and they all cut fine 👍
Thanks for watching, let me know how you go!
Thanks. Have you tried cutting CF by 3018? I want cutting CF but 6040 is too big for my desk
Sorry Duke, I only have this 6040 machine. I imagine if your machine is rigid enough it would be ok, maybe doing shallow passes as well? if you give it a go pop back and let me know how it went!
@@AdamTaylor thanks. sure.
@@dukevah How did you get on please?
Hey Adam, what kind of grease do you recommend to use on the linear bearings and ballscrews of a cnc machine?
I use white lithium grease on my machines.
Can you cut carbon fiber with most desktop cnc? I was looking at one and was wanting to get the upgraded spindle at 300w but have no idea what is needed in machine specs to cut carbon fiber. I want to cut 4mm to 6mm sheets for drone frames
In my experience you don't need a lot of power to cut carbon, I used to have a 700w spindle and that was fine with the same speeds and feeds used here. I think with your 300w spindle it would just be a matter of dialing in your speeds and feeds to suit.
Give it a go, I'm sure you will figure it out!
What do you do when you have a 1 mm cutting line or you have to cut a perfect rectangle from the list and you can not have even R 0.5 mm radius on the corners???
Either design the part differently or use a different manufacturing method.
Obviously there are limitations to very manufacturing process, I design all my router cut parts with a specific tool size in mind (depending on the material) and allow pockets and internal geometry to have some radius right from the start.
Is there a cheap cnc that will cut aluminum plate for rc parts?
The 6040 machine will cut alloy and I have seen smaller machines do it with some success too.
Depending on your budget and your cutting requirements it's often better just to have someone cut parts for you.
Alternatively, if you're determined to donor yourself, find a machine that suits your budget and see if anyone has managed to use it in the way you need 👍
Good luck, it's a lot of fun!
What are your cuttings speeds and feeds? Thank you
It's in the video

which cam program ?
Sir, why must cut in one pass ? Is it to avoid layer delamination and cracks ?
It works great with a full depth pass with this style of cutter, no delamination or fraying. The most important part is work holding with carbon!
thank you sir
Nice. Which machine are you using please? Link?
This is a 6040 machine that I bought almost a decade ago and is pretty modified so there's not really anything I can link you.
If you look up CNC6040 you will find what I started with, but from my experience be prepared for it to be a project.
I've have seen people get great results with the Shapeoko and I believe these are a good quality machine out the box.
Thanks for watching 👍
@@AdamTaylor thank you. Yeah, makes sense, my 3D printer hardly resembles it’s original self but much more useful now.
Boa noite, qual o nome dessa fresa que voce usou? Obrigado
Search CNC PCB cutters 👍

What do you charge to cut out some stuff?
Depends on the job.
Use the contact me from on www.atperformance.com.au if you'd like a quote.
Do you have a link to machine
I bought this almost a decade ago and have modified it quite a lot, but if you search CNC6040 you will find something similar 👍
no water/oilcool needed?
No cutter cooling needed with this thickness, good dust extraction is a must though!
What programm?
Mach 3 to run the machine and Vcarve for the 2D CAM 👍
Is it possible to cut carbon fiber with a laser?
Don't think its possible to cut Carbon with a Co2 laser.
I am able to engrave it with my 60w laser but definitely not enough power to cut.
You risk fire whitout air on the tool
Are you speaking from experience?
