  • Hi all. I was supposed to do a camp but my wife is off so we are going out. I had in my mind to try a wee experiment with my grill and I have to say that I think that it worked rather well. The only thing that I would tweak at this point would be to perhaps lower the Trangia burner but other than that all good.
    It was my first attempt using the cast iron with the alcohol burner, worked really well, I maybe could of used the diffuser to reduce the heat output a little but in general the food came out fine.
    The idea is that I usually wouldn't take cast iron out with me on a walk so the compromise was to leave plates and cutlery at home and to try something different.
    I used my firesticks to good effect and no bending occurred.
    This is my own personal setup and not standard advice when using your stove.
    Here's a link for this wonderful skillet and cast iron from Firebox stove

    Nice one Chris. Watching this and eating my porridge and coffee. I love seeing quirky ways to set up the 5”. I have attached the small grill plate with two fire sticks through the bottom of the plate and right across the floor of the firebox to make a toaster. The sticks support the bread and keep it level with the bottom of the firebox and the grill plate keeps the bread up facing the heat. You have to keep an eye and keep turning the bread but it works. It seems you and I will be sharing the same weather front today and I’m doing an overnighter in the Sperrins. Wish me luck. 😂 Keep it going mate.

      Wow Paul, that sounds like a great idea, I never thought to toast bread but now that you say it, it makes sense, I must give that a try.
      I'm having coffee and porridge too! With a little honey😁😁.
      Your camping trip sounds awesome, so good luck, hope you have a good time, all the best weather wise ha ha, cheers Chris

      Thanks Steve, I think it worked a treat, I have a tweak or two in my mind, but how well did the little Trangia burner do with the cast iron, amazing, I wasn't too sure what to expect but it exceeded expectations! I'm working on this system as to avoid bringing plates out etc the idea being minimal luxury cooking😁😁...and eating!

    Good job, brother! I love my Firebox and I feel you about the food control challenge. I usually try to keep a bandana or plate handy to transition the food around. It's not easy, especially with trying to do all of the camera work as well. You nailed it, though! Thanks for sharing!

    That was a clever setup! I usually use a Trangia on my Firebox Nano and the gas burner on the 5". I like that the Trangia got the cast iron hot enough to cook everything for you.

    • @northernembersoutdoors1045
      @northernembersoutdoors1045  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hi there, thanks for watching. I honestly thought I might struggle for heat as I've never used the trangia with cast iron before. As it stands it got too hot! It got a bit frantic as I was messing about with the camera and it cooked really quick. Saying that it was good fun. I'm yet to try gas,I don't have the right setup.
