The red-headed boy is still alive. His name is Rusty Keller. Besides working with Mike Curb he appeared in an episode of The Waltons and, James at 16. The rumor of him getting killed at Mc Donalds is false.
The character played by Rusty Keller in The Waltons and James at 16 is very likely the redhead in the M. C. Congregation as the resemblance (facial features and build) between the two is stunning. This song was used with the theme of the program "Rede Fluminense de Notícias" that was shown by the extinct Tupi TV in Brazil between 1975 and 1980. the program in question talked about the facts that happened in the cities of the State of Rio de Janeiro, with the exception of the capital. Tupi had 9 of the 7 concessions revoked The stations in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Recife and Fortaleza remained with the Bloch group, which created a new network, the "Rede Manchete", now extinct in 1999 and currently RedeTV! the concessions of São Paulo Belém and Porto Alegre were with the Silvio Santos group that originated the SBT Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão. It remains on the air to this day.
I want to know every one of the singers. Where are the surviving members today? Where did life take them? Fascinating. I’m a native San Fernando Valley girl too.
Harry Blackstone III was the smallest boy in this group. He was singing at the far left at the end. He died when he was quite young. I knew him back in the day.
And to think that this song was written for the 1970 counterculture film “The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart” and was used in two key sequences in the film: 1. A montage where Stanley and his girlfriend Cathy’s relationship turns sexual and 2. When Stanley gets involved in a three way relationship with two hippie girls. A slower, instrumental version was used during the film’s ending credits. The lyrics “Feels like I’m made out of gingerbread” were meant to convey how someone could feel when they are high on drugs. The fact that they then took the song to give it an innocent spin and watching it in this context with little kids in the group is hilarious and kind of creepy. 😂
The entire 1970s was like that. All double entendres. I always thought it was funny how dozens of people including the Muppets covered this song in the 70s and 80s and nobody ever seemed to remember where it came from.

I don't think this got played on the general rock/pop stations at the time, meaning the Billboard Top 100 hits of the week, Top 40 etc, but I believe it got played on Adult Contemporary type stations. While "some" of the music on Top 40 radio and Adult Contemporary did cross over and played on both, usually AC would play the lighter stuff, more instrumentals, this kind of song, Simon and Garfunkel, Carpenters. It is possible this got released as a single on Top 40 radio, but it might have what they call "bubbled under" the Top 100. So let's say it was released to see how it would do, it might have had very little climb on the charts and stalled at 165 in the Top 200. That would mean it got next to nothing play on the regular rock/pop stations, but might have climbed to 60 on AC or the like radio, for sure it would have received more play. I can remember hearing it but it may have been when I was changing stations, running through the dial and it was on some easy listening radio station. Anyhow, just my thoughts.
