It was insane how easy you were able to break down this lick. Thank you for letting us appreciate all that was involved in his expression of this tune.
Gerald Albright’s “Georgia” from Live at Birdland. At 2:39 and 7:35, what is he doing to get his high F to sound like that? It’s such a cool effect that he uses often.
Scott your altissimo is just incredible. I can't play that high yet I can occasionally get out a G but I can play high F#.Sanborn is the reason I started playing his tone and unmistakable split tones are out of this world. Thanks for sharing your incredible knowledge to help students of any age
Hey Dave! Congrats on getting the G. With altissimo, usually after you get that first note it becomes pretty easy to add one note at a time. Yeah, Sanborn had a huge impact on me as well.
Scott- you’re crushing it!! You keep giving the best sax lessons on the internet. Very special THANK YOU! Sanborn inspired me to play the sax with his song The Dream when it first aired on the Letterman Late Show. You have a very special gift of teaching- simply amazing 🙏
Thank you so much! I remember that tune, but it’s been a long time since I’ve heard it. I’ll have to look it up again. The one that got me was Since I Fell for you on the Bob James Double Vision album.
Sanborn s version of Georgia on my mind is killer too. I met Sanborn several times in Glenside Pa just out side Philly at the Keswick theater. After the show I would talk to Ricky Peterson (always smoking outside😉)in the back of the theater where they load the tour bus. Sanborn was so cool he autographed all my CD’s etc.. super nice guy, very humble.
@@michaelszlachta1194 I don't think I've heard him play Georgia before. I've seen him live 3 or 4 times, but the last time was at least 15 years ago. Next time he's in town, I'll have to check him out again.
ruclips.net/video/WQWtKEyzq4E/видео.html this is Sanborn’s session Georgia On My Mind. With Joey’s passing last week- makes it a little more sentimental. Heaven got one of jazz’s best,
Absolutely.. thank you Scott. First of all , Mr D Sanborn , the best and big-time above of many instrumentalists, who has carried a message when he plays , a indelible mark of a great musician. Second, you got me back into the school to continue learning, playing and enjoying... music.
Scott you are a great saxophoneplayer and thats the reason you can brake down these amazing parts of Sanboens jewels. When I tried myself I boken down!!
Hi Scott, unfortunately I don't know the English language well, please when you publish the video selection in “language” “English” so the translations in the various languages will appear on the video, thanks. You are great !!!
Excellent breakdown, as usual... Your altissimos during the tutorial are super 👌 clear, bright and accurate. Dave's the man; his early influence with the altissimos was said to have been that of King Curtis and, to a lesser extent, Junior Walker, Jr. Scott, at your convenience, I will appreciate a breakdown on Junior Walker's "HOT CHA" - the altissimos, how he was able to climb, placing each *altissimo in melodic context, as well as during his improvisation. (*That was on tenor saxophone; I assume the technique on alto sax may be a little different - just maybe) Keep educating, inspiring and motivating us all! Thanks, champion.
Thanks Rasesh! Congrats on being able to play your scales. Lots of adult sax players are starting in their 60s now. It’s great to see the community grow!!
Your an amazing teacher. Been working on my altissimo notes this year. So far I have hit A2 all the way up to D4. The challenge now for me now is on the fluidity of playing the notes consecutively clean or jumping from one note to the other in terms of licks and phrases and in solos. Sanborn too was my inspiration to take up the saxophone. He's rendition of "You are everything" and fills and expressions in Randy Crawford's "Knocking on heavens door" is the class soul and smooth! I love the way you do the breakdown of the solo. Awesome stuff! Have a question on those scoops up and down. How do we get them so clean? Also can you do a break down on Sanborns split tones he usually creates?
Hey Walter - thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I'm a huge David Sanborn fan as well. Those split tones are actually pretty easy, just growl when you are doing an altissimo note and it will turn into a split tone. I did a tutorial on - just search split tone on my channel
Scott thank you for your excellent videos 🙏. You asked if we would like you to breakdown a sax player for a future video. Would you please consider Mindi Abair song Summertime that she did live at The Canyon Club in 2011. Around the 2:55 mark and for the next minute she does some really beautiful work and also at 9 sec - 10 sec mark at the beginning of the song. Thank you for time and consideration. Keep up the Great Work 👍🏻👍🏻

Break down- "Little Wing" with Eric Clapton and Sheryl Crow at the Crossroads with David Sanborn doing a freaky sick jaw dropping solo please!!! It's like my single most favorite solo to listen to over and over again! Thx in Advance.
Breakdown another Scott……Tom Scott. He’s pretty adapt at altissimo. Is that the Hercules tall stand you have behind you? If so, what do you think of that stand?
Hey Thor! Yeah, Tom Scott would be awesome he has sooooooooooo many iconic recordings to choose from. Yeah, I have 2 of those tall stands. They are great! Very secure, they fit alto, tenor, and C melody. However, they are really heavy so you wouldn't want to cart them around that much, but they are perfect for setting up in your house/practice space.
@@ScottPaddock No wonder it looks and sounds great. I tried one at a music store once. Man, did it handle great. The ergonomics on the keys were excellent. That was shortly before I got my Selmer Reference.
A split tone is basically a growl in the altissimo. The notes are so much closer together up there, that you can hear the pitch of the notes fighting more clearly. I did a video about growling and split tones, check it out. It breaks down exactly how to do it. But the short answer is that it is more of a hum.
Hi I noticed David is holding the sax in a different angle also there’s a nearly 35 degree angle with the mouthpiece.i think his top teeth is on the edge of the mouthpiece and blows to the upper side of the mouthpiece.what do you think?i am not expert but just an observation.thanks for the great video ❤
Yeah, he definitely has a different angle, and a lot of sax players in the 80s / 90s copied it. I remember reading a long time ago that it was because of a medical condition, but I can't remember what it was.
