Although she does not recommend rubbing down the humidor with distilled water, she makes her case for the reason not too. Her other videos on humidors / cigars are very good as well.

    This is probably the best method that I've seen. I'm not a believer in wiping the interior of a new humidor. That can impart too much water too quickly and cause the wood seals to warp. I seasoned a humidor for my cousin with basically the same method in this video. I took a clean shot glass and filled it with distilled water and i let it sit for a little over two weeks. at that point, more than half the water evaporated/absorbed into the humidor. Then I placed a digital hygrometer inside with humidification beads and watched it for a couple of days. After that it leveled out and it's been holding pretty steady for the past 4 months. Slow and steady is the best way.

    It's crazy how the cigar humidor process is very similar to the acoustic guitar humidity process. I can actually use my guitar sponge cases to season my humidor! Still, this has got to be one of the best videos that I have ever seen on cigar humidors. Such a very clear video and it just cuts right through all of the garbage and only gives you the information you need!
    I smoked cigars many years ago and I recently gotten back into them after I purchased a humidor. I recently purchased a very beautiful humidor, which was brand new, from a secondhand place for $15 bucks. It came with everything inside wrapped and unused; along with instructions. I wasn't planning on this purchase, but when I researched it, I found that it was valued at $1,200, so I had to buy it. Plus, buying this humidor was the perfect excuse for getting back into cigar smoking!
    Thanks for this amazing video!

    I jsut got a new electric humidor. I filled the water tray with distilled water. Let it sit until it hit 70%. Put my cigars in, and it went down to 60%. I added 3 sponges with distilled water, one on each rack, until it came up to 70%, which was about 24hrs, and removed 1 sponge at a time until it stablized at about 70%. Whole process took 48 hrs.

    I I just bought a humidor. I wiped it down with distilled water and placed the sponge in a bowl of distilled water let it sit in the humidor. I reached about 80% humidity in a day or two. So I took it out and used the humidifier it came with and put in Xhikar 70% solution. After 12 hours it read 70% so I was good. But then I put in 69% boveda packs in and keep getting a humidity level of 63-66%. I have enough packs for the amount of cigars it holds.

    That humidor on her right is big. This is one of the few videos that is correct. Notice she DID NOT take the sponge and wet it and wipe the humidor down inside. That is the wrong way to do it!!! I have wrecked 3 humidors by doing that. I just ordered another one tonight. When the humidor is new and bone dry if you take a wet sponge of distilled water and wet the entire inside down, your shocking the wood and making it too wet, too soon. This will in a few weeks cause the humidor to warp. When it does this, you will never get 70%.Humidity. You now have a leak and if you check your humidor carefully, I guarantee you'll see a warp on the bottom, at the front, or at the back. A bubble like image. Hold it up and look. Your hygrometer will not read 70%. Therefore to Get your cigars closer to 70% you have to make up for the leakage by putting more distilled water units inside. The warpage will get worse. In time your humidor will be only good for storing nails and screws in your workshop. Notice she shows us a piece of cedar that is warped. This is what will happen to the cedar inside the Humidor if you wipe it down with a wet sponge.This mistake has cost me over $900.00 for the loss of 3 humidors. Never, Never, Never take a wet sponge with distilled water and wipe the cedar down inside. It is a quick death to a beautifully crafted piece of wood.

    • @K03sport

      ...so laying the wet sponge on a baggie or elevating it a the wood is the better method? What about the seasoning paks?

    • @Cigar65
      @Cigar65 2 года назад

      @@K03sport The wet sponge is fine as long as you do not wet the wood. I watched a video once where these two guys actually took paint brushes and soaked them in distilled water and practically painted the inside of the humidor with water. I have learned many things in life the hard way and this is another one of them. I now have 3 humidors that I use for storing pills, etc. The more cigars you have in your humidor the harder it is for the humidity to get around 70% but it can be done. If it only goes to around 57% then you need to add another humidity pack. Hope this helps.

  • @mechwar31
    @mechwar31 Год назад

    Something that was not well explained in the video, but maybe I should have looked before I acted... On the humidor with the hygrometer set into the front, you will find five holes on the back side of the hygrometer. In order to get the hygrometer out for calibration, I naturally figured I would just need to push something through one of the holes to push the hygrometer out. Unfortunately, the center hole lines up perfectly with the open back of hygrometer and I pushed directly on the back side of the needle causing the needle to then push up against the glass and break said glass. The good news is the hygrometer is still kind of works, but the needle is bent so it doesn't move freely and it may not have a good seal anymore.
    So, yeah, probably look before you try and push the hygrometer out.

    • @CheaphumidorsDOTcom
      @CheaphumidorsDOTcom  8 лет назад +1

      You can mount your hygrometer pretty much any place it fits, as long as it's not squishing your cigars. We recommend double-sided tape, but any non-toxic adhesive will do. If possible, empty out the humidor, mount your hygrometer and wait for the adhesive to dry before placing your cigars back in. It shouldn't affect cedar or the flavor of your cigars.

      The seasoning process is humidifying the cedar. Once you open the humidor to remove the seasoning kit/distilled water, you will let out the humid air, so their will be a decrease in humidity. Then the humidifier just has to humidify the air over the next 24 hours or so, not the cedar.

      To add to my comment.....you just want your humidor to be consistent.....you don't want it going up, then going down.....you just want it to sit at a consistent humidity. If it fluctuates you'll get those cigars that look like they're falling apart, and that is because they humidity has in a sense 'stretched' the tobacco and then when your humidor goes down in humidity, the tobacco then shrinks tearing the outer leaf apart and destroying the cigar. People get a little too orgasmic about the humidity. You just want it to be CONSISTENT! That is KEY! 68-74% but it HAS to stay at the same humidity.

This one's footprint is a tad bigger but it still doesn't eat up a lot of desk space. Its size and shape blends into the background nicely. This has a good size water container so I don't need to refill more than once a week. I use filtered (not distilled) water because cleaning up after our hard water is tough at work. I like that this has several settings. It's also very quiet. (I have a silence naxi in the next cubicle.) It also hasn't left that terrible while powder, so far, that some humidifiers leave. Been using this for a month or so now and am very happy with my purchase.

I have a xikar pre-calibrated digital hygrometer and tried the tests but it’s always off even if i let it set 2 days with salt or boveda. So i just said screw it and tossed it in my humidor. If it’s off and and ruins my cigars i’m runnin’ xikars wallets.

      You test the hygrometer so you know how far off it is reading so you know how many % points to adjust it. You can calibrate your hygrometer with any % Boveda packets, you just have to know what the hygrometer SHOULD be reading.

      Kayla Becker ahhh, you know anything about the xikar rectangular protemp digital hygrometer? It says pre-calibrated.

    I moved and got busy with work. My humidor dried out, reads 60ish and there are still some cigars (hard) in it. I know how to bring the cigars back. Is the process for bringing the humidor back the same as breaking in a new one? I also have the DrRX glycol container. Can you re activate and use those after they've dried out?

    How often do you need to season the humidor?

    • @Pohinapaja
      @Pohinapaja 7 лет назад

      Just once when it's new or if you happen to stop using the humidor and it hasn't been humidified properly during that time, then you have to season it again.

    If you have a front mounted hydrometer and you put the plastic ring back around it after calibration, how is it supposed to read the humidity levels if the sensors are blocked? Forgive me, I'm new to this.

    • @JonathanRogler
      @JonathanRogler 7 лет назад +4

      I assume it's because if it's front mounted then the adjustment hole in the back of it is exposed on the inside of the humidor, thus allowing the humidity to get in that way so it can be read. Where as if it's top or side mounted to a magnet the back is blocked and therefor if the sides were blocked too there would be no other way for the humidity to get in. Had the same question until I realized that this is likely the reason

    Humidifiers are old hat and inefficient better to use Boveda 2 way humidity packs 69%

      Peter Driver These look interesting. Any reason why Boveda has various humidity level packs if 70% humidity is supposedly the ideal?

      +Uncle Corky Late answer, but the reason is that people prefer their cigars at different humidity levels. The smoking enviroment also has an effect; if the air is humid then the cigar should be stored at slightly lower humidity and vice versa.

    Hey people, I was wondering if anyone could help me out on a question I have, I'm just getting in to cigars and about to buy a humidor soon but where I live (the U.K) the humidity is naturally high... normally around the mid 60's and as I speak right now it's at 92%. So would I even need a humidifier??

      Depends on your climate control in your house. If you have the heat on all the time, and it dries up your house, then I would try to put some humidity in the humidor.

      Buy a few boveda packs , you still need humidity in the humidor!

      I'd imagine you'd still need to take steps to regulate your humidity. That way you aren't dealing with the wild card that is mother nature. I'd suggest dehumidifying your home and then getting a humidor or container to control the humidity for your cigars.

    Have watched several seasoning videos and no one mentions that the humidifier can be replaced entirely by using simple Boveda bags. Is there a reason why this isn't mentioned/recommended?

    • @BracchiAlessandroFineArt

      maybe cause many humidors come with the hygrometer and humidifier , but mention the boveda is never bad, i use the humidifier cause is cheap on long term.
