  • No visuals, just a short audio tour through the different ambient sounds used for the environment.

Fantastic. I know you mentioned you felt it is average and I would have to disagree. This sound design is incredibly immersive. It probably helps we have no visuals to go along with it, but I was able to really imagine being aboard the Obra Dinn.

I just got around to playing the dev build. I don't know why, but I didn't have faith you'd be able to create something as high-concept and awesome as "papers, please" twice, but you sure seem to be on track to making it happen.

I have finished playing your development build. I've played through it twice. My girlfriend once. I've only jsut heard of Obra-Dinn today and already three of my favourite youtube reviewers have played it. Like every one of them I'm simply blown away by what you've made. Here's some feedback:
Visuals - it looks weird and ugly in the screenshots. However this completely this completely changes once you start moving around on the ship. It just ... works. Very well. The snapshots of the crew members deaths are incredibly dynamic and tell the story very well. The animations of the player character's arm are very natural and honestly unlike anything I've seen in any game yet. They create an incredible sense of immersion.
Audio - The ambience and sound effects are good and believable, but honestly what has impressed me more is the music and the voice acting! They sound nothing like development build, they feel like finished assets.
Setting, Story - The setting is interesting, we only see a short glimpse of the story but the potential is huge. I've only seen 10 minutes and already I'm hugely invested. I really want to find out what happened!
Gameplay, mechanics - The death watch thingy is a nice idea. Honestly, the logic behind it isn't exactly groundbreaking. How it's presented in the game, however, is! Even though the scene is static you can feel everything coming together around you. Walking around and trying to take in as much of it as you can in the limited time that is given to you, glimpsing into the past. It ties in perfectly with your objective of pieceing together what happened to each crew member.
All in all even this very short demo shows that everything is present that will make Obra-Dinn a truly memorable experience. There's a story, there's atmosphere and theres a game.
Of course everything is still rough around the edges but I noticed no bugs. In the captain's scene, the knife is missing. Also, the text at the end says the fates of 2 people can be deduced, but with the clues given you can actually deduce the fates of 3 people correctly.
I think it would be a good idea not to have too many public alpha builds before release.
TL;DR: I'm very excited for this game, can't wait for it to finish. You're on track!

    this is amazing.
excellent work, your post was really informative, completely useless for my current game project but god damn that's some amazing attention to detail. You better finish this game because the sound alone is enough to get me excited.

Amazing, I've been a big fan of your work. That "The Sea Has No Claim" game, Papers, Please. The sound design here seems amazing and the graphic design (The "Old school, Gritty 1940's movie/comic book look") I also like. The dithering is neat, too. Reminds me of the old DOS games. The blue noise reminds me of Life and Death 1, while the bayer reminds me of life and death 2/old castlevania games.
By the looks of it, it's going to be similar to a point and click adventure game without the point and clink, a virtual novel of sorts? Or will it be an open ended game with a storyline and objectives, enemies, etc.
I'll definitely be getting this when it's released.
I really love how every single one of your projects feel, look, and sound like they were made by completely different, all extremely talented creators. Not a single one of your games look like they reused a theme or art style, from the 8-bit, dystopian style of Papers, Please, to the noire gritty feeling of Obra Dinn, and the simplistic yet futuristic look of The Sea Has No Claim. Athough for some reason 6 degrees of Sabotoge reminds me a bit of Papers Please with the grey shadows of the characters, and Republia Time's "Simple" graphic style feels also like Papers, Please/the sea has no claim. athough Papers Please and Republia Times may or may not take place in the same universe.

Really nice work. I thought maybe the wind should make some howling noise from time to time but otherwise it feels great

Wow, -looks- sounds incredible! Seems very immersive, however I'm not entirely sure, but wouldn't a flapping sail & flag be something to add to the upper deck?
I am looking forward to more info, do you have any clue when you'll have a beta for download?

Thanks! There is a flapping sail (around 1:00), but it's probably a little too subtle at the moment. No eta on the beta. I still need to prototype the gameplay, which I've been putting off.

Loads of creaking. It feels like it's going to fall apart.

Great ambient work! Some of the footsteps remind me of Morrowind for some reason....

Your game is awesome! I just played the demo and is fantastic, the visuals, the sound effect (don't know how you did it) and the gameplay. I read a lot that this games resembles The Vanishing of Ethan Carter in the gameplay... don't listen to them, the gameplay is brilliant and I've never seen it before. One little that bothers me is the music that is played when you watch what happened after using the clock, it is too bright or bouncy and you are looking a murder so maybe it could be more serious.
    NICE GAME!

Stellar work with a lot of attention to detail. My only critique is the "bubbling" noises while on the lower decks struck me as off, and possibly unnecessary. The deep creaking of the hull was awesome, but the bubbling noise takes me to an aquarium.

Thanks, I've toned down the bubbling since this build. It's still audible, just less scuba-town.

The sails don't sounds realistic to me. I expected a deeper "flapping" sound. Like "Master and Commander" when the doctor gets shot.
