4:43 Certain types of GPUs, usually older/unrecognized ones, actually do that pretty often on modern motherboards, so it doesn't *always* mean fake. at 5:03 why does it say display adaptors with an 'o'? i checked my device manager and its spelt adapters with an 'e'. It even says network adapters with an e just below on yours. perhaps the scammers made a typo when they spoof the card name.
Will the BIOS of these cards allow you to re-flash them as GTS 450 and install the right driver? Before you trash them I wondered if you can make them work.
Dawid at 2:30 in the video you said "shroud" color when referring to the covering on the graphics card... You forgot to include Shroud's head popping up this time! lol I always find that funny when you do that.
Eh, I think it’s more like people looking to upgrade so the list the gpu as a legit 450 on wish, eBay or Amazon etc. and this Chinese company goes and buys every single one along with other cheap cards. Buy and flip.
They will work if you install the drivers on the driver disk since those are tweaked drivers. It’s actually interesting when that happens because sometimes the drivers tell the game the gpu has more vram than it does which causes the game to break
A while back, I looked on Amazon for some 4-port Intel gigabit cards to use in a diy router. I found two that were the same exact knockoff cards. Both listings were made within a couple days of each other, but had pictures that were from a different angle to make them seem different. In both you could see the embossed name of some random Chinese company. And they had the same chips of every fake card. As well, both listed the seller as the "manufacturer". And if you went to the seller's page itself, they mainly sold cheap jewelry. Reporting the listings as fake did nothing at the time... Edit: And both sellers were listed at different addresses, but were actually the fame building somewhere in California if I remember correctly.
I definitely want to see that SLI video. It's going to be hell for you... Take one for the team. Ps- be sure to benchmark 4 of them against the cards they were actually supposed to be.
Be careful Dawid, I saw another video where one of these fake GPUs actually short circuited the motherboard because it was set up that way, so there are actually scammers that want to fry their costumers.
To your first question, my guess is that they may have been defective units that someone bought up and "rebuilt" and sell as a GTX 970. All the GTX 970's Iive seen have been larger, and require at least 2-6 pin connectors, although mine was a 2-8pin design with 3 fans. Either way, they were big cards (physically), much bigger than that, so the size in relation to the cooler is a dead giveaway.
I mean, if you need a plug-in placeholder card you can order one and then just ask for a refund. It worked magically on Aliexpress for me. Got like about 50% of items refunded because they were not what the description said. Being a Diamond level buyer on Ali also helped a lot.
You should do a video where you literally return the card, but buy a gts 450 and return that. When the scammer asks: "Why isnt this the GTX 970" or whatever card you bought, just tell them that it's the same gpu. Or just do any video about scamming a scammer (if u want to of course) cuz it would be pretty cool to be able to say "I scammed a scammer"
I wonder, what happens if you use the provided drivers from the CD/DVD... Does it install and load the 450 drivers, and only show up as 1050ti and how do they perform against a regulat 450...
I think the dead giveaway is that the fan assembly is larger than the card (you don't see that on actual, legit copies of cards from major manufacturers like EVGA, GIGABYTE, ASUS, etc) generally have cooling fan assemblies that are the same length of the card--even the cheap ones from major brands). My GTX 970 was huge (about 14 inches, had 3 coolin fans and required 2-8 pin power connectors).
I'm confused. Your hear of people being prosecuted for fake trainers, fake perfume or fake watches.....yet these fake GPU's are still available on major selling sites? If the sites are aware of them being fake surely they are involved in the scam by allowing them to be sold ?
Just a guess but could they have been used as mining cards cleaned up really well or thats why your getting different cooling fan setups on them ? Just a guess
Awesome, love the content. I have what I suspect is a GTS420, wouldn't mind using it as a display adapter to test motherboards. Could you make a video (or link me to a good one) on how to flash the bios to the correct one ?
IIRC, there are a TON of cyber cafes in China and several years ago, they bought up a massive amount of GTS 450 GPUs to put in the computers so they can also do light gaming. Well, all those GPUs are aging out now and they have a huge bulk of them and nowhere to put them so...they cleaned them up, threw a fake BIOS on them, and sell them to unsuspecting buyers via eBay, Wish, Amazon, etc. I wish I remembered exactly where I saw this. I know it was from a YT video, but I cannot for the life of me remember when or where I saw, or who made it.
Easy way to spot the scam from the listing if you are unsure, especially if they are selling as 1060's etc is that the VGA port has not been on the NVidia cards from a very long time. If it has a VGA port and purports to be a newish card it is very, very likely to be a fake card
I suppose that with GPUs, if it's way cheaper than it should, then it's fake with 100% certainty. After all, how many times have you seen _any_ genuine GPU being sold new for a significantly lowered price? I don't remember seeing a single instance.
they do but still the card is old as time and cant run anything on it... also the drivers are hacked so not the safest thing to install if u still got a disc drive that works
