Great presentation. Girls were calm so your hide and seek queen is also docile. My entry is at the centre so brood in the middle bars and then rescources either side. Works well in QLD. I dont put blankets but I have built a cavity in the lide with wool insulation in it and hemp cloth holding it snug up against the tin roof. Ants sometimes like to nest up there so plenty of cinamin to diswade them.
@@aussiebeekeeping sounds great, I’m thinking of a horizontal hive myself, but it’ll be a while off as I’m busy with my hybrid flow hive and my brother’s flow hive 2. Keep up the great work awesome videos 👍🐝🍯
You won’t regret it. You could use a Queen excluder but from my experience and from videos I watch I believe the queen wont lay past the first honey frame so they aren’t required.
Found the video you were talking about. Thanks Dallas Texas is watching. Also, we will have a month or so of temps over 100 + will the wax foundation hold?
I am wondering why you broke up the whole hive? The purpose of Top Bad I understood was to be able to easily extract a frame, inspect, and put back in almost same location. Is it because under high flows the girls build the comb onto the hive walls. (I notice one was.) No worry about the bees won't getting crushed
Do you have a video showing how you made these top bars? I'm not very happy about the bars that came with this hive and would like to try yours out. I live in Wyoming and a 2nd year beek.
Hey Roxanna. I don’t have a vid in making them other than the snippet on this video. Basically I purchase the timber which is 42mm x 19mm and put a saw cut through the centre. Good luck with your bees.
great video. I have a question. I am a new bee keeper and made a top bar last year and had recently a swarm in the hive which is amazing:) there are 20 top bars. I wondered if this is a mistake to give the bees the whole bars ? have I made a mistake? Thank you and would appreciate if you could advise.
I wonder is you what would happen if you move the entrance to the other side so when you open the top and work on the hive the bees would be on the far side from where you are working? I'm curious what are the winters like where you are? Thank you. Curt from Windsor Connecticut.
Well I'd like to know what is the point in having a long Hive instead of the short Limestone High because when you take all the honey away then you're going to crush all the comb and then the bees have to work twice as hard to build it back up this is over Rob
It’s a more natural environment for the bees and they are healthier in a top bar hive. I take the honey and the wax and use them both. It’s easy for them to remake.

@@aussiebeekeeping I have seen it but can't seem to get it, 42 mm length, 19 and 20 mm thick. I need the exact width as to your top bar. thank you for your time.
It is early December in Loch Lomond Queensland. I have a new Long Langstroth Hive just painting outside & internal wax inside. I want to transfer from my 1st Long Langstroth to the 2nd, to do some design fine tuning on 1st one. Can I do transfer this time of year?
In my latest top bar build I put the bars into a Langstroth to start the build and then moved the whole hive into the top bar. Pretty successful overall.
No more gaps or painters mate works really well for gluing comb strips into groove. No heat required.
Finally!!! A good video on going through a top bar hive that isn't a beginner having trouble. Thank you for this smooth video.
Thank mate.
I’ve finally built another and have started making more videos.
So glad you like it.
@@aussiebeekeeping I look forward to see you in your spring.

Very nice, I assume harvesting means crushing the honey comb the old way to get the honey out. Great hive thanks for sharing 👍🐝🍯

I always have wanted to try a top bar hive. I might try to build one after watching your videos. Can you use a queen excluder on a top bar hive?

@@aussiebeekeeping okay thanks no excluder it is then. Thanks for quick reply and your fantastic videos 👍🏻😊🙏.

👍
If the wax as a couple of months old it will hold. Google Kenyan Top Bar Hives. They use them in Kenya. The angle sides keep the heat off the brood.
Would a box shape top bar hive rather than and angle box work ok?
What’s the purpose of and angle shape?

I use Langstroth deep frames.
I have same trouble with killing bees when putting frames in. Thanks for the lesson. I will try it next check.
Which type of species these are??? APIs cera na??
Great video, Loving the style of hive I’m wondering are those top bar is the same length as a Langstroth frame
@@aussiebeekeeping thanks for that and that was my thought process to.
Hey there loving that you are back up and running for your spring! Great to see you.
In the Ozarks you should make them at 19 inches so you'll be compatible with Langstroth hives if the need arises.
In my latest top bar build I put the bars into a Langstroth to start the build and then moved the whole hive into the top bar.
Pretty successful overall.
