How to dust moulds with Mica Powder

- In this video I show you how I use Mica powder to dust the moulds before using them. They remind me of Unicorn clouds .. not sure what that is lol :)
The resin used in the video is Craft Resin 1:1 ratio.

You just made me feel better about my current project. Working on a firefighter Maltese cross, and dusted it with mica powder first. I really hope it comes out!

So beautiful! I love your art, as usual. I've dusted interference mica in my molds. It gives the resin a very ethereal appearance. I have the same feather mold. You have to treat it gently when cleaning. I plan to make a ton of the smaller feathers & dangle them from a chain bracelet. I'm glad you are well. I'm taking precautions & have managed to stay healthy. I'm in the southeastern US. Thank you for sharing your techniques. Watching & creating helps me stay sane. Stay safe!❤

Glad I found this video! I dusted some mica in moulds before pouring some glittery resin in and was told I wasn’t supposed to do that 😅 just need to wait my 24 hours now :)
Ohhhhh 🙈🙈 no way ... its perfectly fine ! The only thing is that you might not see much glitter come through as the mica acts as a barrier ... but its perfectly fine to dust moulds xxx that wait is the worst ! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Add mica to small drops of 91% or better isopropyl alcohol and use like paint on molds,works great for details.

Heyyy Pam thankyou so much xxx there is sometimes a little residue ... I think depends on the mould ... I find the really soft squishy moulds are the best for holding mica and releasing it too xxx then I will just use tape or wash them if it's really a lot ... but it hadn't happened that way yet xxxx glad you like these xx

Hiya... first look at your site and content and what a lovely set of results.... I'm going to have to go back and catch up on all the content and catch up on things before I start asking questions. I have been wood turning for 6 to 9 months but resin calls every now and then... As for keeping safe, luckily I'm retired and living in Southern Spain so this is the end of our 3rd week of lockdown. All is fine but it's go to the stage where you cant go out so the only thing you want to do is go out..... :) :) :). Take care and don't go stir crazy.

@@ClairesCraftyCorner Hiya just looked at your very first resin pour, it was wonderful... As for going out, there are no problems there, can go out for food, medicine, petrol and hospital but that is all. Only one person allowed in the car at a time. Fines being issued left right and centre for anyone stupid enough to disregard the rules. I'm glad i've got my workshop and Amazon and UK companies are still delivering. X

Those turned out amazing! I haven't tried mica so much as I was afraid the powder wouldn't come out of the mould after but it stuck well with the resin. I'm ok by the way. We have quite a few restrictions here in Sweden against going out frivolously, sadly not everybody follow them. Most under 25 and some over 70 yrs olds seem to regard it as silly to stay home. I have to work as I drive trains for public transport.

@@ClairesCraftyCorner Apparently there are no legal support for a complete lockdown here. Stockholm, where I live, has the most problems right now. Hopefully people start listening to recommendations before lives are lost.

They turned out beautiful! I love rainbow colors. :) I have seen videos using mica powder and resin for keychain mermaid tails, and I love how those look too! Do you know if you can use mica powder with airdry clay or is that not recommended? I know people use it for polymer clay. I do have some mica powders but I have not tried them out yet! I'm undecided on what to use them on!

I have also seen them used to dry brush a canvas before a clear coat of resin .. not sure I'm that artistic though lol

Heyy Christine .. yes it stays in the reain .. but my hands did get covered in Mica .. from the mould itself .. I panicked for a bit but realised soo after haaaa xx
Hey you said something about using the feather for a clay mold. So you already have a video on how you do that or any recommendations. I'm trying to make my own molds but I've tried almost every diy how but no luck.
Heyyyy ... yes I want to make my own feather mould ..havnt' done it yet x I do have a video on making a mould ... even though it didn't go great ... it worked ! but I was impatient x I have made a new mould last week and it works perfectly xx Check out @resinace channel he often makes moulds and he links the silicone which is where I bought mine xx

Hope your coping ok with the lockdown? From what I've seen and read other parts of the uk are being hit hard with covid19 - 5,000 people have died as of today I read. It seems slightly surreal to me. I live in a rural area and life hasn't really changed for me, it's just got a little bit more quieter.

Hi Claire, They turned out awesome!!!!! I think I've worked out why everything is back to front when using your phone. Are you using the front-facing camera so you can see what you are videoing? Do you put the mold release first then brush on the powders? Or do you even use mold release?
Heyyy Suzanne, I have never used mould release ... I don't even own it xxx I can't say I know when it would be used but I do know lots of people who do xxxx
Loved them all. Have you tried doing it with UV resin? I haven't had any luck doing it. Would love to see if you have better luck.
heyyyy lovely ... no I dont geneally use UV resin we do not get on at all x I have since learned it is best to use BLACK resin to fill the backs of these .. it makes the powders pop way more ! and i dont think UV would work well with Black

Do you have to like seal the resin after its cured when you dust the molds or does the color stay on?
The colour just absorbs straight in to the resin ... no sealing required 😁

Did you heat the mica powder before or after you added the resin?
I don't get it. Did you just brush the coasters with the color desired and then just pour the resin or did you need to color the resin as well? That's what I've been trying to find out
Hey Amy, sorry for the delayed response .. I havnt been getting my notifications. I just brushed the moulds with the colours then poured clear resin into them. I do know some people are colouring their resin too … I have been told that black resin will make the coaster pop even more but I havnt tried that yet x
How do you get the powder to stick to the mould? Especially once you've washed and dried them, it won't stick... :(
I tried this and it didn't work!! 😥 I'm hoping when I try again it will turn out as good as yours because I love this technique and I was so excited to try it!

What about uv resin? I've had problems with curing the resin and the resin not picking up the mica. Do you know what I'm doing wrong?
Heyyyyy lovely... UV resin is a whole new world to me ... I only ever use it as a glue. I am hoping to try it soon though ... I don't know enough about it to know why this happened so sorry xxx ❤❤❤

I’m confused because I’m doing the same thing and it’s not applying heavy like yours. Do I need to build it up or get a different brand? 😅 or am I using the wrong paint brush?
Heyyyy lovely... ohh it could be fir different reasons .. some silicone moulds don't take mica powder so well ... in fact the ones I use in this video are not the best .. but I was still learning ....

would this work for uv resin molds? can you dust uv resin molds and use uv resin ontop ?
Heyyyy lovely, UV resin would be suitable for small intricate pieces, I am afraid I do not get on very well with UV resin so I cannot advise. For coasters and such you will just use a lot of UV ... and whilst UV can be bought in smaller cheaper bottles ... KG V' KG .... Epoxy resin is way cheaper. I do not know if you can dust with UV i'm so sorry xxx
Any suggestions on how to clean off the excess mica dusts where it’s not wanted ? For example I used a stencil on a coaster mold but got mica dust around the pattern where I didn’t want it. I have tried using alcohol and whatnot to clean around the pattern but it leaves water spots/streaks and the shimmer from mica is still there for the most part. I’m not sure what to do after going though all the trouble of stenciling 6 coaster molds ☹️
Heyyy Lovely .. I use sellotape to get most of it off and then a wet wipe .. but it really does get everywhere doesnt it x I think your best bet is to use tape x

I just got some mica powders and am trying to figure out how to use them. Mine look like an oil slick happened.
Roger haaaaa I am not laughing at the oil slick but you are funny ! haaaa I am sorry about the oil slick .. You need to brush them on lightly … and then shake off the excess into a bin before pouring resin. My latest video is also a dusting one … it may help x

I was also putting the mica powders into my resin and I saw on another video on RUclips that it wasn't supposed to be done that way but I saw these other folks combining the mica and resin and gardener together so I was confused. I have a short video if my colorful mica powder brush on coaster.

Heyy Stacie.. yes I believe wye shadows work x worth brushing them in and trying.... its all Mica Powder so I would say yes xxxx
What are the colours you use in alcohol ink

this way is better than adding it to the resin. 👍 u can paint just about anything.

Hey Krystal .. thank you so much :) yes the powder absorbs in to the resin and the moulds come out clean. I will say though /// these plastic moulds are more difficult to dust than the squishy silicone moulds .. they hold the powder much better. xx

@@ClairesCraftyCorner thx Claire for some reason i had a feeling you ere going to say craft resin....i used that, the bottom of my cup tea read 45°c and craft resin supposedly goes up to 93°c but still left a mark on a coaster that had been left to cure for 3 wks and 6 days..😢
@@seanditch4419 heyyy Dean, ahhhh no way. I actually never put hot drinks on these ... but ... I did make some Christmas coasters with Craft Resin .. and funnily the heat didnt affect them at all. I do find Craft Resin is more unpredictable than others. Wouldnt it be great if all resins were standard flat out heat resistant !
