What is strange is that big companies construct wind turbines and passenger airplanes one kg of epoxy resin only costs fifty cents. If a private home hobbyist buys epoxy resin, it suddenly costs sixty dollars per kg. What's going on there?
Excellent advice Steve! I see so many crafters using the wrong tools for the job, and then complaining loudly about how bad this product or that product is; when it’s simply a matter of being too lazy or too frugal to get the correct tools. If you use the right tools, in the correct fashion, you’re far more likely to get good results.
Now I know what I was doing wrong with some of my crafting projects! Thank you so much for sharing. Always enjoy your videos and the time you take to share. Can’t wait to see your new crafting creative work space.
Another great video Steve! My little boy (6) was very impressed with your mat! He was super excited when I showed him that I have it on my craft table!!!
Hi Steve, watch all your videos, doing a great job. I'm just starting out and was wondering what your thoughts are about heat mats? Keep up the great work
I did my first resin project last night - but with the wrong product! I used Alumilite's Mold Maker instead of Casting Resin and now it's stuck in the mold. Is there a way to get it out like heat? I dug out the top layer and was wondering if a layer of Casting Resin over the residue would pull it out? Thanks in advance Steve 😍😍😍
Another great video Steve. Would be good if you could have the number in a darker colour so it can be seen better. So many people say resin not cured, it's bendy after a month etc I always say ratios or mixing were off but they argue it perfect not knowing cheaper cups have inaccurate measurements. Amines are another one the other day some women telling a newbie off saying it's the temperatures dropping causing the problem so buy a heat mat and it'll solve it 🤦
How ya been Steve? I feel like I'm seeing less of you. Could just be me. I hope you're doing well. You help keep me motivated to keep going ,which boy do I need some days. ❤❤❤
Great information! I know from experience that I’m not to be trusted with using heat sources on my resin. I have only fused a mold once, but I have burned the resin so many times that it’s embarrassing since I KNOW BETTER. 😂😂😂 I super love using that large mixing pot too! I don’t even want to use my other ones after getting that one.
I love the big wipes. Thank you for the tips. I laughed when you said 80 F was hot. Summer in Arizona averages 100 F or hotter. At least we don't have much humidity.
80 with high humidity is hotter than 100 with no humidity. Speaking from experience I went from Mississippi 90 degrees and 99% humidity I swear, to kuwait 140 degrees dry heat and it certainly only felt like a 10 degree increase not 50
I use 1:1 and I always run out of both at the same time. It's supposed to be that way with 1:1. Took me a while to fully figure that out and I messed up a few pieces and have a couple bottles of part a still around.
Very helpful tips, thank you! I’ll use the torch only on the mold-less pours from now on! I am new to resin work and have found your channel to be the best for practical, efficiently explained information. I love all the experimentation too! Thank you! ❤
Thanks for the tips. I'm new at making resin crafts and I definitely have had issues with measuring equal parts even when I think the amounts are perfectly measured out. I was very disappointed in my outcomes so much I thought it was a waste of time to continue. Two years later, and after watching some of your videos, I've slowly been collecting more supplies to give it another go. Mainly need to get some pigments to mix color, additives and a heat mat but then I should be ready to give it another whirl. I'll have to check your link on the Teexpert set. Thanks for the great info.
Awesome tips! Would something like "silpoxy" help on a mold that has been melted to a resin piece so you can re use the mold? I know I've seen it used somewhere as a means of doing a bit of repair on molds, but I'm not sure if it would work if the mold was heated too much.
Ah ha! Mystery solved! I just started working with resin and I found my B bottle has a little bit more liquid than my A bottle. I've been using my scale to measure out equal parts of fluid I thought so I need to go back and see what the bottle says about how to mix it whether I should eyeball it or weigh it. Fortunately all my resin pieces have cured to solids they're soft a bit longer than the cure time says but they have all eventually become Rock solid so for the remainder of the mixes I do I am going to use the markings on my silicone cups that I already have that are like yours. Thank you so much! I checked the bottles out and they made no reference to how they're supposed to be measured out. No wonder I didn't think anything of it. So I want to see if I can find some more information on the site where I purchased them but that must be the issue because I definitely have an imbalance of fluid levels between bottles A and b.
A little serendipity, I used mould material to make plugs to make holes in my projects. I used the silicone measuring cups to create them and they came out with the measurements on the sides. Now I know exactly how much resin I need to reduce to avoid overages.
Thanks for the good advice Steve. Do you think you will be able to use that fish eyed canvas for anything else? It seems such a waste to throw it away.
@heidih.2465 I ran to look at my JDiction epoxy, and at first I couldn't find it, either! But, it's there! Look across the very top of the label on each bottle. In very thin, white lettering, Part A has: R / E / S / I / N Part B has, in thin, white lettering: H A R D E N E R Jyst FYI: ALL brands use this Industry Standard: Part A for the Epoxy (resin), and Part B for the Hardener.
Thanks u for your fabulous advice and videos . I wish thou that all measuring cups came with black writing, numbers because someone like me who struggles to see them even before the resin is in them , yes u mark yours but like I said I can’t see them to mark them , my eye sight doesn’t see anymore like it used to and now see better colour on white better maybe this is something that will come in the future that the cups one uses are black numbers 😀 thanks again for your videos as I would like to get back into resin . UK .
Hi Steve I really enjoyed watching your videos, maybe you can help with a issue I am having, not all but I do have some pieces well after currying (apox 4weeks) they seem to be very hard but are warping and when try heat up sometimes they will get a crack in them. Have any ideas what’s going on? Thank for any suggestions.
Hi Steve! I recognize those ripples all too well... gel nail polish will do the same thing if it's too thick! Horrid mess to fix! I've done it once... ONCE with resin, backing a pendant... layered too thick, and BOOM... ripples all over it. Threw the piece out. Ripples and bubbles are evil...lol. I use my blow dryer on low heat and medium speed to help with bubbles. Thanks for all the info, and experiments! ❤
SO hi steve, I'm new with you. I am so scared of flames and torches and this helps me alot here. SO can I do all my small carousels and coasters with a lighter torch as you did here always then? I would feel much better and trust your advice. I hope you say yes I can! Also I spray alcohol for bubbles, no good?
A spritz of Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), 91+%, can be used to decrease surface tension to pop bubbles. If the mold is spritzed with IPA before a pour, it can also prevent bubbles from forming along the face of the mold. It'll affect patterns differently than heat, so you might want to experiment with it. More tools for the resin toolbox.
Hi Steve been watching your advice & skills & enjoy them & am learning so much.I started with Teexpert but found I couldn’t buy it again on Amazon.Any thoughts? Also I want to do a very subtle marble effect on a Deep Pour clock, using quite a lot of resin.could I use a 3 divided cup to do this?

My measurements of the different cups I use are off as you mentioned they might be. I will also be purchasing a stick lighter as well as I have melted my pour to the mold. Oops

Hi Steve. Are you based in the UK? If you are, how did you get that measuring jug set with your name on it? I went onto their website and despite it saying that they ship worldwide, when I got to the checkout it said they didn't ship to the UK 😢😢😢😢
The vacuum chambers are great for pots of resin but lousy for poured molds. Its almost impossible to pick up a poured mold and move it successfully, not to mention the resin 'swells' while its degassing and would ruin your mold and chamber. Hence the lighter or heat gun. I hope that helps!🌞👍
Do you use a heat pad at all to cure your projects? I’m having a lot of trouble and a lot of ruined makes. I use the heat pad on medium, one project looked amazing, put it on heat mat, covered it with the hood and when I went to get what I thought would be a great cured piece, the resin had cured but it had all separated in the mould, other pieces have warped in the mould during curing process, so frustrating and expensive! I find low heat is too low and I don’t like using the high heat. Help Steve 🙏
Hi there👋 Im fairly new to resin, but is it possible that you're rushing the cure time with too much heat? If the outer resin cures too quickly it will warp once the inner resin cures. Have you tried leaving them to cure at room temp for 48 hours? On humid days it takes my projects a few hours longer to set, just wondering if maybe they just needed more time. It may also be as he stars in the video that if the amounts of a and b are even the slightest bit off it affects the final result and curability. I hope you find your answers!🌞👍
@@invisiblue3212 I did wonder, but see other RUclipsrs using the heat pads too….that’s why I bought one. On most things they cure brilliantly on the heat pad, but the past few items have failed mainly by warping. Thank you for your reply and help though.
I’ve been using the plastic cups to mix resin to make ring holders and find that the bottom of my ring holders always look cloudy (if I wipe it with alcohol its clear but goes back to cloudy so I know its the outside). Could this be because of improper measurements from the cups?? Or is there another reason? Im using T-Expert or Lets Resin brands so I know Im using quality resin.
Hmmm. Sometimes, a spritz of alcohol can mess up the surface of resin, but that doesn't sound like what you doing? Very possible that either your room is too cool, or far too humid.
Not true my friend! If your mold is stuck, warm it slightly and slowly with a hairdryer or small heat gun, right at the point where it's stuck. Then slowly peel the mold away from the resin piece! Works every time! I've also heard you can use alcohol to make the mold release from the piece! Good luck and I enjoyed the video👍
It depends on the shape of the piece. If it's thin or pointy, like, say the top of those apple or pear vases....it can break off when heated Btdt Freezing sometimes helps, too, especially for something that didn't cure properly
Only work in a well ventilated area! I have asthma and am easily triggered by fumes and smoke. I have a large box fan in my window set to exhaust outward and my resin table sits in front of it. I also have my ceiling fan set to push air down, on low setting, so the fumes dont rise up and float around. I also wearing an N95 regular mask and mix at arms length towards the fan. Haven't had any issues with fumes leaving the room or irritating my eyes, lungs, etc. I have an elderly relative with chronic breathing issues and they haven't been affected at all. I hope this helps you feel a bit braver!🌞👍
I store my resin in the fridge. Simply because it gives me about 2 more minutes of pour time with my larger molds. BUT.....I don't use transparent resin. So only use this with opaque resins.
Hi Steve, could you recommend that Teexpert use black numbering instead of the clear. It would make life so much easier.
From a partially sighted person, i concur 😂
As another visually impaired person, I also concur. I dont mind doing it myself, but as a near blind person, it would make a difference when choosing and purchasing my new set.
