DIY: Repair a chewed up Windowsill

- Hey guys! Have any of you ever had a dog or animal chew up or scratch up a windowsill on you?
Have you dreaded having to tell your landlord and know he's going to take it out of your deposit?
No worries! It only takes a couple of hours (drying time for epoxy) and some 2 part wood epoxy to repair it and get it looking good as new!
JB Weld Kwik Wood Epoxy - amzn.to/2Ew9T6O
Velcro Hand Sanding Tool - amzn.to/2G6W3bx
Assortment of Sandpaper (80 grit up to 400 grit) - amzn.to/333aJRX

I love how the perpetrator of the damage was in the background the entire time
And to add to it... He did it again almost immediately after the video was finished.

So after looking into it, turns out the back story on this is that it wasn't his dog....it was his wife
Lol
Well, I came looking for "how to repair a dog-chewed windowsill" - and here we are! Thank you so much!
Same😂😂😂😂
Pro tip, add a few finishing nails to the wood prior to applying the epoxy. The nails will give it rigidity and bond the two piece together better. Thus, making it stronger. 👍
Wonderful addition to mention there. You can do finishing nails or drill tiny holes and put toothpicks in the holes. Maybe I'll do a small video showing the difference in reinforcement using nails and not using them.
That's a really good idea.
Maybe if they poked her mouth she’d quit chewing too! 🤷🏽♀️👍🏾🐕
I don’t know if that will be better. Finishing nails has a different coefficient of thermal expansion than the wood and the putty. In other words the nails will shrink and expand at different rates compared to the wood and putty, which can push and pull on the wood and putty, potentially causing separation between the 2 or cracks over time.
I use the finish nails as well. I pre-drill holes in the wood where I need them and then insert the nails to the perfect depth giving the putty something to grab ahold of. Also helps to keep it into shape and not sag when forming and drying. Same as when doing concrete up against an existing pad or wall. We drill holes and insert rebar to insure that it will bond and hold up to another surface. I also use tight chicken wire when filling larger holes in wood surfaces and filling with an epoxy or Bondo. Works great.
Thank you….The EXACT video I needed. Our puppy has chewed up our windowsill, and the baseboards in our brand new apartment. We were gonna pay someone to fix it but This is wayyyyy cheaper then paying someone to fix it THANK YOU
So glad I was able to help out!
Thank you for this. I have lots of wood chewed areas in my house. I especially liked when the putty fell off, in the beginning, because that is sure to happen with me and seeing it's just what happens makes me feel better about it. Thank you for not editing that out.
You're welcome! I'm glad I could help out.
I try to keep my photos as authentic as possible, even if that means there's a mistake or two that occurs so people can see that these accidents happen.
My boyfriend and I were already planning on buying the piece and I told him to let me see if I can patch it up and found your video. Now we have hope it can be fixed rather than replaced❤️ THANK YOU !
You're welcome. =)
I was about to replace everything because I was told it wasn’t fixable. Thank you so much for this. I’ve had to hand sand it, which sucks, but it looks pretty good.
IRONxPATRIOT you’re very welcome! I’m glad I could offer some help for you.
I no longer feel like I'm alone in the chewed window sill stakes, with 175K views- thank you. I'm going to give this a go tomorrow. So funny the culprit is in the background!!
Oh wow, I hadn't even realized this video had gotten that many views. O_O
If you have any questions during the process, by all means ask away.
Thankfully that culprit has quit chewing on them now years later. lol
Good video, was looking for wood repair.. stripped my moms main stairs, one stair wood top has a piece on the bottom from corner of the board over about 4" missing.. this is a great idea since we are painting the top wood on steps. thanks so much! You saved our day and worry on repair!!!
I'm glad you did the project in as few cuts as possible, no speeding up, no trying to "hide" content (heavy breathing lol). It sets a great expectation for time and see your work in detail
Thank you! I was worried that it may be too long of a video for people.
I'm so glad I found your video! My dog has chewed on kitchen cabinet doors and a kitchen drawer. I'm going to give this a shot! Thank you for sharing. Well done video.
Thank you for the kind words. Fortunately this method perfectly conveys for pretty much any type of wood and is very easy for most people to do with just a little bit of time.
Thank you so much for this! My pup bit so much off the windowsill and I've been so worried it was unfixable. This seriously helps out a lot!!
Glad I could help out!
Did this on 2 window sills and it works great. Only addition was that I used a 3/16 wood dowel for additional support. Drilled and glued 2 pieces so the nubs stuck out and I could push the epoxy on to them.
Wow. So glad I found this! I have an area below my window where the drywall surface bows inward leaving about a 1/4" gap right at the end of the horizontal trim below the sill. Fortunately, the window is near a corner, so that gap isn't easily visible, but it still isn't good. I was trying to figure out how to fill that gap as it's too wide to caulk or fill with spackle. This product would be perfect. Easy to use, quick, and paintable. Going to go get some.
Moving out soon and was quotes 150 per window for this exact damage. I can do this myself! Thanks so much
You're welcome! I'm glad I could help save you some money.
Thank you!! Fixing two window sills my dog got to as a puppy and a small nick in the doorframe as we speak. Appreciate the help
I'm glad I could help out! Let me know if you have any questions during the process.
Excellent video! Thank you so much for your work on this - you perfectly explained the process. We too have sustained damage from our beloved wood munchers and this will help us save a lot of money.
I'm glad I could help out!
Oh man, this is a lifesaver. I didn't even know this stuff existed, now we're all good (meaning wife is happy). Thanks!
Glad I could help! Let me know if you have any questions during the process.
I've got like 17 windows like this. Great solution. Looks like I'll be busy for a weekend or two, but thanks for the solution!
You're welcome! It's been an issue I've had to fix so many times over the years with my houses and my rental properties. It takes a little time, but it saves a ton of money in the end.
THIS SAVED MY LIFE. AND MY SANITY. THANK YOU!!!
I'm glad I could help. =)
Thank goodness for you! I looked over and saw the chewed sill and almost fainted!
Great video. I have been looking at this for 7 years now and was finally going to remove the whole wood piece and redo it. Decided to Google "dog chewed up window sill" and the video showed up. Thanks for the video. Will save a lot of time and money.
I’m glad I’m able to help out. Just let me know if you have any questions during the process.
Thanks for showing the entire detailed repair. I have 2 of these dog chewed sills to repair and this video was very helpful. A new subscriber.
I'm glad I could help out! If you have any questions, just let me know and I'll do what I can to answer it for you.
In the future, Predrill some holes, and run some screws into the wood but not all of the way. Leave them sticking out so the putty has additional internal support. For larger areas that you may want to putty vs integrating wood, you can also wrap some light gauge bailing wire around 2 or more screws, then pack the putty into the gaps first, then add the rest of the putty. I have a similar situation I'm about to fix at my house, and this is how I've fixed other trim as well.
Wonderful advice for sure.
Literally u should be an amazador for the JB Weld! This video has helped me so much and probably so many others! My lease is almost up on my first apartment and I don't want to get hit with so many fines for the walls being damaged from my dog. I went to home depot today bought the sand paper, some paint, and the the JB weld and the wall was fixed all in the same day!! Thank you so much!!
Haha, thank you so much.
If there’s any other damage from your pup that you’re not sure how to fix, let me know and I can make a quick video on the subject walking through it.
Thank you so much! First time renter and was worried it would damage my future renters reputation if I don’t get my deposit back! Going to try this!
Queenie Jiang you’re very welcome! If you have any questions, just let me know.
i’m in the exact same situation right now!! this video is a life saver
@@kirbysmith6666 I'm glad I could help out! Just let me know if you have any questions or need help with anything else. =)
You're a star! Thanks so much. My puppy destroyed the window sill in the flat I am renting, so this is really helpful
YS I’m glad I could help out. Just let me know if you have any questions or need any assistance with it.
Amazing video. Just what I was looking for. Just tried it on one of the window sills. Letting it dry now to see what I need to do for second coat. Your video made it very easy and not something I would have known or tried on my own without so a huge thank you!
Thank you! I'm glad I was able to help.
Ugh I'm getting ready to go buy supplies to attempt this fix! Wish me luck!! Thank you!
I had to do a similar thing my self, looks good.
Absolutely Brilliant, thanks so much taking time to share this, was great to see whole process. Just the similar repair I have to do, 👍👍👍👍 THANKYOU 😊
I'm glad I could help. =)
Thank goodness I found this. I had the same thing happen. I was so angry. Now I can fix it. Thank you so so much!
I'm glad I could help out! Just let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge😁💕
You're welcome! Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else you'd like to see.
So thankful to find this. I’m helping a friend move and in her bird room (parrots) they chewed the wood window frame. I figured RUclips would have a video and it does, yay!!! So I’m gonna try this out. Thanks for posting this! Oh, and a huge shout out for JB Weld, I LOVE that stuff. Again thank you.
Litterly have a window seal with nearly the exsact same chew mark. I was prepared to use bondo but this is way better
Brian Guichet Bondo tends to not have the structural hold necessary for a larger repair like that. You could always drill a few small holes in the sill, use wood glue to add some toothpicks to create an additional structural layer for the condo or epoxy to stick to, but that’s not really needed with this epoxy.
Did you fix it yet?
Thank you! Excellent DYI video.
Oh my you just SAVED ME! I have a few baseboards to repair and I had no idea how, many thanks.
BTW once I do the repairs I will be spraying DYI bitter apple to prevent my guinny from chewing🤞
I'm glad I could help out!
I hope your bitterant sprays work better than mine. I tried numerous home-made concoctions and commercial ones with no luck. Ixion just kept happily eating whatever I sprayed. Finally just had to spend the time to break the habit with him. He's been good for over four months now.
@@JoeMartinMVC LOL "he keeps happily eating whatever". I hope I have better luck than yours. If I ever get a pet again I will teach him better.
Thank you!
I'm getting ready to attempt this fix!! Going to the hardware store to get supplies. Our puppers decided to chew the window sill as a snack!!
Hopefully everything goes well for you and they don't chew it again. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll do what I can to help.
Great video my dog had puppies and when we were still in search for them homes they chewed up all four window sills! On both sides! I have some work to do!
Very thorough video. Have two to do. Thank you for the video!
You're welcome! If you have any questions, just let me know.
My dog literally did this a year ago. And it’s been driving me insane. It’s the biggest eyesore in my living room. If all goes well, I should be able to fix it this weekend. Thanks for sharing man!
It's the absolute worst to see it every day. I covered mine up with a curtain until I took the time to finally fix it. lol
If you have questions or anything during the process, just let me know!
Thank you! My pup literally just did this! Too bad as he's been enjoying sitting on a chair looking out the window.... my coverings are those slat vertical blinds so that won't stop this! Great easy to do so thanks!!! Poor pup is in his kennel thinking.... I hope.
You did a bang-up job! I would have never known it was ever damaged.
Thank you!
Thank you for this! I had no idea what to do when my dog chewed up my ledge.
I'm glad I could help out! Let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you for this, my dog made perfect chew marks in my window sills lt looks like he was trying to be an artist! This will help!
I'm glad I could help out! Just let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you. You saved us
I'm glad that I could help out.
Wow, this looks so easy to do!! I definitely will try this👍. You have helped me keep my pet deposit 💸😺, THANK YOU! 😀
I'm glad I could help out!
I'll be making another video in the next week or two about another method that can be used that will be even easier to level out and finish. The only drawback to it is it won't be as structurally strong as the epoxy. Fortunately the two systems will work together flawlessly.
@@JoeMartinMVC Awesome! Will be looking forward to it 😀 Also, I subscribed 👍
@@staisha988 Thank you! It's always appreciated.
Thank you so much for this video! I will be attempting this when I move out of my apartment! 😂😂
You're welcome! Just let me know if you have any questions during the process.
Thank you for this video, this way will save me hundreds if not thousands.
Great job!
And what do you know, I have a dremel because of the dogs too :-) Nice to know their tools will be part of the fixing process :-)
I've honestly used Dremel's tools more than most of the tools in my shed for basic home repairs. The only ones to get used more would be my drill and impact driver.
Thanks for the vid. This saved me a ton of work
Excellent video. I have 4 window sills and some baseboard to do. Puppy German Shepard chewed up.
It's always the Shephard pups that do the chewing.
Thank you so much for this video! I've tried wood filler and it just isn't user friendly in this way... Try making a paste of hot sauce and cayenne pepper for the chewing. I just brush it on with a paintbrush and it's the only thing I've found to keep my dogs from chewing
I tried working with different wood fillers numerous times over the years and they were always terrible and never dried well, then I started using this epoxy and loved it.
I've tried a similar combination a few times, unfortunately he seems to enjoy any type of heat and spices and happily licks it up.
@@JoeMartinMVC My now departed bulldog also wasn't phased by Tabasco, but that was almost 20 years ago. We now have ghost pepper hot sauces.... Could work well for puppy/adolescent chewing, but probably less effective for anxiety chewing.
@@nuts4goats545 I don't think I'd want to give him anything that spicy, but he doesn't chew anymore anyway, so it's not a concern now fortunately.
guys love our dogs!! My wife's a hater of mine right now..He's bitten into a door and into the frame and door jam..Its a 6 panel solid core stain grade door and frame..$$$..i guess i just need to replace. As all the doors in our home are this style..No filler is unnoticeable , at least at my skill level..
Jeff Bohn unfortunately I haven’t found a “stainable” filler that actually looks like real wood after it’s stained either. I’ve definitely looked and tried.
Dude, you're a lifesaver. My husband and I just bought our 1st house and I noticed all kinds of little nit picky things that I wanted to fix. I was walking through the house and noticed a large corner chunk taken out of my window sill and I literally thought I was going to have to replace the whole piece of wood until I saw this video. I went to Lowes, grabbed me some JB Weld Qwikwood and fixed my window exactly the way you did and it looks brand new! I can't believe it worked and this stuff made it so easy.
I'm glad I was able to help out and it worked so well for you.
thank you so much
You're welcome. =)
Great job!!!! Thanks for the Vid!
Thank you!
Not the way I'd of gone about it but interesting all the same and got good result. I'd of spliced in timber and a bit of filler but opened my eyes to that 2 part a bit
That's definitely a good option, but I wanted to go with something that anyone would be able to do.
Great job and make it look easy.
Thank you!
Thank you exactly what i needed my dog did the same thing
Glad to be of help!
You saved my windowsill.! Thank you.!
You're welcome, I'm glad I could help.
Its so helpful thank you ! Would be even better if you can post the link where to buy the stuff on amazon

Excellent video!
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video. My Cane Corso enjoys wood for a snack. Any suggestions for deep scratches on a wooden door. Window ledges and doors are like prime rib for Mr. Prince
I'm glad I could help out!
If it's a non-textured door it's very easily able to be fixed in much the same way.
If it has a fake wood texture, then typically you can use a wood filler and as it's drying gently go over it with a soft bristled brush (old toothbrush) to get a similar texture in it.
Excellent video. As a wood worker I love how u showed the video from start to finish and sped it up when needed. Someone like housewives could watch this and feel pretty good that they could fix something like this. The audio was just fine too.
Thank you. I tried to make it as accessible as possible to anyone regardless of their skills or experience.
Our puppy! UGH, HAHA!! He eats holes into the walls from nothing (I don't get it). The walls have been repaired. Now to fix the 2 windowsills!! Thank you for posting this!! After the windowsills, it'll be the staircase (like 5 balusters and the newel post and newel cap). Oh, he's been a chewer (he's 1 year on Halloween). We were finally able to get him a crate so when we're not home, that's his 2nd home. It's been interesting to say the least. Thank you again!!!
You just have to love that puppy stage. We've all been through it. I had to fix plenty of drywall, windowsills, and door frames thanks to him.
@@JoeMartinMVC haha, crazy poopers! I've learned the crate helps when not at home and to keep raw hides on hand. Toys don't seem to last more than a day (bullmastiff), but the bones keep him chewing on those and last a few days. Thanks so much for this!!
It looks perfect 👌
Nice job 👍
Thank you!
You are a masterful sculpter - awesome job!
Finishes- and 10 min later dog is chewing other window sill 😂
Comically he chewed up this windowsill shortly after I finished making this video. I tried so many ways to get him to stop and finally accepted that id just have to wait until I was ready to move to fix it and have it stay fixed. He’s since stopped chewing windowsills thankfully.
@@JoeMartinMVC I have resorted to dampening areas dog wants to chew and putting a light coat of citric acid powder on it. Works like a charm
@@TJHutchExotics I tried a bunch of different things to no avail. Even tried things like hot sauce and cayenne pepper, but he seems to love it regardless.
Very helpful - thanks a lot. Going to give this a shot this week. My golden retriever did the same when she was a pup and I'm not trying to cough up my security deposit! Thank you!
Let me know if you have any questions during the process.
Sweet
Truly a hero
I would like information on the kind of Epoxy you used. Thanks so much - I have 4 windows to get to work on!!!!
Never Mind I went back and saw in video!
Sorry for not getting back to you about this, it seems RUclips decided I didn't need to be notified about comments for a few days.
What ratio of water to alcohol did you use? Is it strictly for cleaning purposes? Great video!
You’re all depends on how drunk you wanna get straight up is the fastest way no water lol
Thanks man
Saved myself $500 in pet damage at my apartment complex. Fixed all the baseboards my dogs chewed
I'm glad I was able to help out. I've actually used this in a few of my rentals instead of keeping the deposit for something that can be fixed for only a few dollars.
You're a freaking life saver!
Ugh my 11 month old 12 lb shih tzu just did this to the window next to the front door. I will try this thank you so much!
Hopefully you're able to get it fixed quickly.
I just bought a new bed frame that my dog decided was tasty while i was at work... hoping I can use this method to fix it..
It definitely works, I had to do it for my bed frame (pine bed frame) when my ex's dog chewed a good bit of it.
The only down side is you do have to paint the frame afterward since the epoxy doesn't stain like wood.
I wonder if it would work to make a mold 1st out of the unused putty. Might save time trying to shape it by hand.
That's a pretty good idea, wouldn't hurt to try. I'd say just make sure you use a mold release (wax, cooking spray, WD40, etc) to make sure that the two pieces don't end up sitcking to each other.
Enjoyed your video. Would this work on my dresser and would I be able to use stain? My pugs chewed couple of corners. Thanks again
Yes it would. It can be stained, but to get the best possible match to the existing wood it would be best to mix in some saw dust from the dresser or same type of wood from sanding it. Otherwise the color may be slightly different when staining as different woods take stain slightly differently.
I tried this with plastic wood on my last deck board corner. Wonder if it’ll work!
I would imagine it would work just as well, just may not be quite as strong.
I have a desk (I think plywood) that is broken in the front right (not the corner, about 90% of the way and in the very front) dented to were it's breaking out the bottom. I was looking up Bondo but everything I'm finding is for corners so I'm not sure what to do. I'm hoping there is a filler I can use because I am hesitant to break it all out just yet. On the top it's about 3 inches by 2 inches, and on the bottom a little bit larger, so I wasn't sure if Bondo could handle something that big if it does eventually break out.
I wouldn't recommend bondo in that situation as it is quite fragile. Going with the JB Kwikwood that I used in the video would work much better for creating a solid replacement and would bond in to the wood. You could also add a light coat of wood glue on the exposed wood before applying the epoxy putty to help with adhesion.
Great video! My dog broke a part of a wooden corner of the wall and I tried this method to fix it, but the wood filler dried up faster than I expected, is there any way to remove the excess of the wood filler after it's dry?
Sandpaper is typically the best method, but depending on how thick it is you could also shave it down using a razor blade.
Great. My dog chewed up my sill along with two brand new $500 blinds.
Oh that's terrible. Can't say I have any remedies for the blinds, sadly.
Any tips on color matching the paint? I can’t remember what color mine is!! Just a random shade of white
Best option for that one would be if you're able to take a sample of the paint to Home Depot or Lowes, they can color match it for you.
Will it work on particle board trim
It will indeed.
I wasn't able to find the putty would I still be able to do this if I used it from a bottle??
Tired Jay it would really depend on what you’re using. You could also use any of epoxy sticks. So even if they don’t have the JB Weld brand you should be fine to use a different epoxy stick.
My concern with the liquid would be how difficult it would be to control where the liquid stays.
You could also use bondo/body filler in multiple layers. I’ll eventually do a small video about that method as well.
Does this work for exterior window frames also? My puppies did quite a bit of damage chewing up corners of our window frames outside in the backyard.
Yes it does. The Wood Epoxy is actually stronger and more durable than the original wood, especially in outside environments, as it is not susceptible to moisture or decay.
that's pretty damn cool
Thank you so much for posting this!! I have a 2 year old broken coat dachshund who has chewed up so much stuff around the house including walls and windowsills and I'm going to have to repair everything myself because my husband passed away in sept.
I'm sorry to hear of your loss. If you have any questions or need any assistance during your repairs, don't hesitate to reach out and I'll do what I can to help.
I have broken corner on my bed , would like to use this method , will it come off after a years ? I decided to cut that piece Completly later I found this, if I apply strong glue before. Apply this epoxy and put some nails will that work ?
The epoxy should bond to the wood fibers and create a permanent bond, but you can also use a small bit of wood glue between applying the epoxy to get an even better bond. Adding small finishing nails or toothpicks in to the wood and applying the epoxy over will also create an even stronger bond.
I used toothpaste to patch my nail holes before moving out.
My cousin’s dog chewed up the corner of my windowsill. Thank you for this. 😩 I thought I’d have to pay a handyman a lot to fix it.
I'm glad this was able to help you out.
Do you think this would work/be worth trying if my window sill is a natural brown/mahogany color? It’s not painted, so I image I would have to try and match the color with a stain.
It sure would as it is stainable. It's not perfect in the staining department, but it does work, I had to do it once on an Oak countertop surround.
You could also take some sawdust from the natural wood and mix it in to the putty to get a better staining effect out of it.
@@JoeMartinMVC great idea! Thanks for your reply:)
@@johannablocher6694 You're welcome. =)
Appears you needed to add some putty on right end of sill?
Can i drill on the epoxy? I have a furniture metal that was screwed on a narrow wood so it easily broke and screws were loose. I am thinking if I can widden the wood using the epoxy then screw the metal leg.
Yea you can, though you’ll want to wait at least two days before screwing in to it for it to fully cure, otherwise the inside can be a bit too soft still.
Something a few others have done to create a strong wood-like surface is to use sawdust and wood glue to create an almost putty-like texture and use that as a hard wood substitute.
Appreciate this thank you for the response 😀
Great/professional video....no b/s ...just getting on with the video....
Does this work on door frames as well? My cat has scratched so much on it and I’d really like to get my security deposit back!
It sure does. Though let me ask, is it the actual door frame, or just the case molding around it?
