Listen!!! That High School Music intermission?! Living for it.
Played it back. Not going to lie 😂😂😂
@@Brie-o5o we all did!
Probably the McDonalds Menu 😂😂😂
😭😭😭
Caught me so off guard 😂
I cannot get over the offer to send you a 'bespoke, leather-bound' edition of the phone book 💀💀
I hope she gets one!
There are so many moments of this vlog I want to quote. That now I’m overwhelmed and can’t think of anything except “probably a McDonald’s menu” 🤣🤣
i kinda feel like we could get a 2001 and 2007 video since your only 5 stars for those years are sequels to a book already on the list. shelfishly, because i love this series and will miss it 👉👈
I *have* been considering a follow-up extension of the series next year where I make an effort to find "adult 5⭐ reads from every year of my life" because I too don't know if I'm fully satisfied with the list yet 😏
The high school musical intermission was so cute I loved it
truly superior content
the absolute anxiety i felt seeing you pick The Shadow of the Wind (my favorite book of all time) first! and then seeing the vlog was only 24 minutes and wondering if you were gonna get to another book... ah im so glad you loved it! its probably my most re-read book and i love it every single time. your comments on the way women are portrayed is totally valid and the only thing about the book i dont love; but i do think the author tried to correct it in other books in the series and do a better job with his female characters. Fermin is the best!!
not to try to curse you or anything but i need one of these videos to be like 2 hours long
@@solairreadssometimes the final episode I imagine will be quite long!!
hahaha i love this comment
Same. I need SOMEONE to do the dishes with & I prefer to be Kayla.
Drake is coming to deliver my pizza ! Do you think it’s really Drake ? 😂😂😂
I do the exact same thing whenever I say “this is not what I want” lmaooooo that just made my day
I have an anti-recommendation for a book I see on the 2006 list: The Secret. My favorite part was when the author referenced another book that claimed Jesus was a millionaire lmao It's a ridiculously bad book which makes it a great book to make fun of but I don't think it has the potential to be a 5⭐
So happy you saw my comment, it felt like fate when you picked it up in the TBR jar! And very glad for you that you liked it :) thank you Kayla for the (as always) nice video!
the high school musical intermission is what i do 24/7 so i loved it
Can't believe we only have one more video left! I've been enjoying this series so much :)
The fact that Rob knows the lyrics to high school musical songs 😭🙌🏻
Rob was cracking me up 😂 maybe it’s THE Drake
2004, what a year! This video made me realise I’ve been singing ‘Scotty doesn’t know’ for 20 years 😺💕
Wait.. Liam's in 9th grade?! 😩😩 Time is flying
I think you should still give Cloud Atlas a try! Definitely weird, bendy, what's real and what's not kinda vibes for a while. I don't usually read sci fi or fantasy, but I was hooked.
RAH so many really good 2006 books! Sharp objects, mistborn, the road, the book thief, three body problem, lies of locke lamora, the tenth circle!
The book thief! So good
i CACKLED at the phone book email omg.
Casting my vote for The Three Body Problem !!!!!!!
Sharp objects!! It's my favourite Gillian Flynn 😁
i think she gave it four stars already
Kayla you are cracking me up in this video “tufted tit mouse” I can’t 😂
I loved World War Z! I haven't reread it, though, so I don't know how it would stack up now.
Fun Home is 2006!! Maybe it can convince you to read graphic novels/memoirs. Extras by Scott Westerfeld would definitely not be a 5 star, but I'd be interested in how it has aged.
World War Z is zionist as fuck, Israel expanding it's borders is a big plot point in the book. Everybody dying and a elite surviving seems to be they go to fantasy
Sharp Objects for sure! That and "Just Listen" by Sarah Dessen are my 5 stars for the year. (Also the HSM interlude? I asked my husband why he doesn't know Sharpay's solos and he couldn't answer. 🔔 Shame!!)
My face when you said 2004 was 20 years ago knowing good and well it's 2024😳
Ah slightly disappointed that you didn't get around to the other 2 books bc I would've loved to hear your thoughts on them, but yay that you loved something that you picked from the jar!
Also after the options at the end I feel like I need to say that, if you haven't read them yet, you should definitely make a video reading all the Twilight books, just because 😁
I feel the same, I would've loved to hear her thoughts on Cloud Atlas because I own that book and I could use a little push to finally read it, but seeing as she wanted to read just 1 book in the previous vlog, I think Kayla deserves this :)
Another win for the jar!
World War Z could be interesting for 2006 since it's written like it's a non-fiction book!
Nooo Rob is absolutely a book influencer. I read Solo Leveling because of him!
💕💕💕
The cultural impact of 2004 should be studied
Great year. But maybe just because I was 12 😂
OMG…The Swan was insane. No way that show would air today.
I'm so glad you didn't have to suffer through Cloud Atlas.
Edit: For 2006, MISTBORN FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE finally read it?
WORLD WAR Z!!!! I love that book, especially the audiobook!!!!
I assure you the Red Sox winning in 2004 World Series is very important to my family😂
Loved The Thirteenth Tale so that's my pick! Also I feel like the only person who doesn't love The Final Empire so will be interesting to see what you think!
Glad you found a five star without too much effort this time around 😅
I was a freshman in college in 2004 in Massachusetts so YES the Red Sox winning the World Series mattered to me!! lol
that high school musical number was so real omg
Omg I was born in 2004 and it’s my birthday today! This is so lucky, thank you Kayla for the best book content 🩷🩷
happy birthday!
I'm a HUGE fan of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (reread it earlier this month and it's still amazing), but Piranesi didn't do much for me and I have to reread it sometime to see if I like it more the second time.
Mistborn & The Blade Itself should definitely be on your TBR for your final year!
Yay, I’m glad you loved it!! I do hope you try Jonathan strange because I still want to know whether I should read it lol
Please read It’s Kind of a Funny Story, for 2006. There’s also a movie if you haven’t seen it.
I read it in Spanish when it came out. It’s so weird to hear the names pronounced in English 😂
I absolutely want you to read Mistborn. It was just shy of 5 stars for me (the next one in the series was 5 stars though), but it's a really incredible series. I know it's not necessarily your go-to genre, but I'd love to see you read it! I also think that since it was the year of vampires in the book world that it only makes sense to read at least one vampire novel. 😂
im pretty sure she pulled it from the TBR jar at some point so she'll definitely be reading it this year, probably for the finale 🖤
I have dnf-ed Mistborn (that was when I realized that Brando Sando just isn't an author for me, after trying a few of his books), but I am equally excited to see Kayla read (or at least) try it out 😁
I hope she'll love it like most people do! 🤞
A really good video idea is to try to read Robs favorite books from throughout his life❤ also, the boy in the striped pajamas would be a good but sad read for your 2006 video. The others didn’t stand out to me much
I’ve commented before but I’ll do it again, for 2006 PLEASE read The Bastard of Istanbul by Elif Shafak
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson hands down you have to read it.
I think that's the same copy of TSotW I have.
For next time, I really remember loving The Thirteenth Tale and I think you'll like the, sorta, slow apocalypse vibes of The Three Body Problem.
Three Body Problem!
Oh my god I absolutely grew up watching The Swan and rewatched it last week LMAO I had no business being obsessed with that show at nine years old
Noooooooo I could *not* bring myself to attempt a rewatch of that, so good on you 😂
I can't believe we were all watching that in our formative years, how horrific 😭
It was such an insane show! Not many people in Denmark have watched it so when I tell people about it, they think I’m making it up 😅😅
The musical intermission 😍😍
Mina’s matchbox by yoko ogawa was published in 2006!!! It’s my fav book of the year so far
Some amazing 2006 books: In the Night Garden by Catherynne M. Valente (stories inside stories, super magical), The Beast Player by Nahoko Uehashi (fantasy), A Winter Book by Tove Jansson (short stories again, can't remember whether they're autiobiographical), The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield (gothic mystery) ♡
I love The Shadow of the Wind! So happy you gave it 5⭐️!
Living for more High School Musical song breaks👏🏻
That High School Musical intermission? The best vibes, and now I need to rewatch them all and relive the cheese
Mistborn is what got me back into reading in 2020, when all the things were happening. Binged that entire series. Will always hold a special place for getting me through that year. It was a favorite and a 5 star. I really liked The Thirteenth Tale too! Not sure if its a 5 star though...
You should read Sarah’s Key for 2006. It’s phenomenal.
2006: THE ROAD, The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes by Diane Chamberlain
bird names ARE crazy because wdym our national bird is a “monkey-eating eagle”????
I hope they send you that phone book 😂
Please read It’s Kind of a Funny Story. It saved my life 😭
I am so glad you liked this! I love this book. I've recommended fo friends and they've all struggled with it.
My hold for shadow for the wind came in on Libby as I was watching the video!
AH just starting and I hope you watch cloud atlas. Love love love it
Ahhhhhh PLEASE read the 3 Body Problem!!! It's absolutely wild, even if you don't end up giving it 5 stars I still think you'd really like it!! (Either that or you'll completely hate it lol)
One second who knew Kayla could sing!!! Need more of this in Vlogs 🎉
You and Rob are iconic 😊
Glad you enjoyed Shadow of the wind. I think you might like the rest of the series as well
Ahhh I saw The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield in the list for 2006 at the end!!!! One of my all time favorites and perfect for this time of year! ❤
My absolute favorite movie that was not written by Mario Puzo is Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's third love story, "Blended". Cannot recommend it enough!!!
I'm a little surprised you haven't read 1984 - it's actually really short and easy to read. It was good - highly recommend. For your 2006 video, I LOVED The Three Body Problem. I didn't realize it was written so long ago, but maybe just the translation is newer.
The Shadow of the Wind is one of those books where I will accept no criticism, it's my favorite book ever! Out of all the books I've ever read it's the most gripping story ❤ also the book is The Shadow of The Wind, it's not about the cementary oo forgotten books :) thats the name of the saga :)
“What were you reading?”
“Probably the McDonald’s menu” 😅
“Do you think it’s THE Drake”
I mean I wouldn’t be surprised at this point that he’s forced into being a pizza guy after his career was murdered by Kendrick.
oh, I know Susanna Clarke and her partner sci-fi author Colin Greenland ... they have a place here in Cambridge & another in the countryside.
I have a lot of favourite books but The Shadow of the Wind will always be my favourite favourite.
I remember so distinctly the first time I read 'Once, in my father's bookshop, I heard a regular customer say that few things leave a deeper mark on a reader than the first book that finds its way into his heart.' at the end of chapter one. I was 12, reading the first adult book my mum had ever said I should read and getting to that moment and suddenly realising 'oh that's happening to me now!' was beyond magic.
Ah, how cute you were in ninth grade. I also have a ninth grader, but I was teaching 11th graders and one 9th grade reading class in 2004.
You absolutely have to listen to the audiobook for World War Z. It’s to this day one of my favorite audiobooks that I’ve ever listened to. Plus I recently discovered Max Brooks is Mel Brooks’ son and that blew my mind 🤯
Please read The Thirteenth Tale as your next pick!
I HATE long books, but for some reason a few years ago I was walking through a bookstore at a train station and I picked up Cloud Atlas completely on a whim (it was because of the cover, the UK pink version). I had no idea what it was, I had never even heard of it. Like your copy, it did not have a premise anywhere on it. I started reading it on the train and was absolutely ENTHRALLED, I read it in 2 sittings. It changed my brain chemistry, became a pillar of my reading taste, blew my mind in every way! I keep searching for a book that will make me feel like that again. So what I'm saying is maybe you should read it someday if you want 😅
I selfishly want you to read The Three Body Problem even though I hated it because I still haven't figured out how our sci-fi tastes align hahaha.
The girl who played with fire! The millennium series is soooo good! (Well the original series. I don’t like the translators continuation) I am currently making my partner read them all
Imagine a leather-bound edition of your taxes!!
Please please please check out the book drew barrymore is reading every morning in 50 First Dates - Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins. It is my favorite book of all time and no one has ever talked about it!! It is a wild ride
u know i just HAD to sing along to high school musical
You should read It’s Kind of a Funny Story! Would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Unfortunately that is the normal cover for Vilest Creatures despite it looking much darker on images online (unless somewhere else has an actual black cover to match the first one which would be nice)
The thirteen tale. Is a gothic historical fiction with fucked up characters and creepy twins. The writing is beautiful also. You can guess the plot twist if you pay attention to the language one character uses. I saw it coming but still thought it was smart and fun.
Was coming to say the same thing! It’s my favorite gothic novel! I think Kayla, you will love it!
It was, indeed, not what you want and not what you planned. 💜 Hope you're able to get the edition that makes you happy!
The shadow of the wind is a book that gives me the WORST fomo. Everybody and their mom loves it. I thought it was okay lol I hate it I wanted to love it so badly and yet
Is that The road I see? I feel like you would really like that one!!!
the hsm break is me all the time. the 3 soundtracks live rent free in my mind. jealous you have someone to actually duet with though 😂
woah was not expecting you to read never have i ever but i hope you enjoy it! it's definitely your vibe ✨
Can’t believe we only have one episode left! If you wanted to read more Carlos Ruiz Zafon but not necessarily the Cemetery of Forgotten Books series, I’d totally recommend Marina - very similar vibes and a brilliant standalone
It would also be interesting if you did a movie adaptation version. So, reading books based on the year the movie was released or something similar ☺️
I just read The Road and I think it’s the best book I’ve ever read, I could see how it wouldn’t be for everyone, though, so I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Pretty sure high school musical came out in 2004 as well lol
It's a short video! That's a good sign (for you)
The wardrobe malfunction is the reason we have ten second delay on live tv now!
