My first console as a kid was an original gameboy. I can relate so much as I would only take one game with me on car rides. Now I’ve been rebuilding my physical collection of games and movies and I love sharing it with my 5 kids. We do a game night once a week and we usually use a different retro console each week. This year my oldest son saved up working with me over the summer and bought me a fricken PSVita. I cried. He must be listening to me ramble because he refuses to buy digital copies but would rather pay more money for the physical copy because he understands one day it might not be there. I also set the same rule for him as he rode with me in the truck and was playing through the switch Zelda games. He had to figure out everything on his own. I’ve been so proud of his growth just as you have with your son. Thanks for posting this.

I took one game with me, because I only had one game. 😂

It's important for kids to realize that though collecting might look silly,
There will be a day where there may be very, very few copies of Most, physical media, especially video games.
Look around at how many things from 50 yrs + ago that no longer exist.
Moms always throw stuff out. Always will.

This notion has been known by the phone companies for years, they ding and rumble trying to get your attention, and every app wants to send you notifications

I want to thank you for your videos and your pride in keeping nostalgia alive. I am doing the same with my daughters (3 of them) with all of my physical media I have kept since my childhood. Watching your journey mirrors my own in alot of ways. Thanks again.

Attention. Excellent observation! I’ve started to realize that retro games and consoles are more like a key that unlocks a feeling or memories from my past. Those thoughts are laying dormant back in the brain, but seeing or playing something from my past brings up memories that I didn’t even know were there. That’s what I cherish more than even the attention I’m giving it at that moment. My children are in the same boat! They’re amazed that they even like some of my older stuff. I enjoy watching them struggle. Is that wrong? lol! Great video! Thanks!

My first console was a Sega Master System with the Sonic game cartridge and Alex Kidd (in the console's memory). For over a year they were the only games I owned. And I was very happy. I played Sonic for hours and hours whenever I could. I remember that I always tried to finish the game with more points than I had ever managed before. I've had subscriptions for every possible console (XBOX, PS, Nintendo) and I ended them all because I started to realize that I often ended up spending more time "wandering" to choose a game than actually playing it. The same with Netflix and similar sites. I started having DVDs again (which I don't care what people say, because for me they have great quality and are super cheap) and I started buying "physical" games again because there are hundreds, if not thousands of games that are fantastic and I had never played before .

Right on dude, same here on the subscriptions. And the DVDs are choice 👌 I have my old Xbox 360 hooked up to a 36" JVC crt I got for free. Chappelle's Show DVDs look so right on it!
Sonic 1 on SMS is so good!!!

I work many jobs. I work in healthcare, run a film festival, as well as a production company. I’m extremely busy and my time is valuable. Retro games are far better made and are often great challenges. It’s how I found your channel. Currently I’m going through the Ninja Gaiden games in celebration of the announced Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound.

10:00 There's a pretty good article written by Satoru Iwata (I believe it was him) which summarized that Nintendo modified their development strategy after the GameCube to not only target a "blue ocean" of customers with their hardware, but also lessen difficulty of games, in order that customers beat games faster so that they buy the next new game. If I remember correctly, he couched it in the argument that it made customers happier overall. I don't remember the title, but you could probably find it with some searching. What Nintendo does, people follow, hence Egoraptor's 'What if Mega Man was made today?' video

that is exactly what i believe too man you are 100% right all this limitless options that we have at the end are becoming comfusing and they really steal the very core of what gaming is, gaming as everything in life is giving a chance and try to do or play something that in the end it may make us trully very happy for giving that chance and do or play it and as for the digital copies sometimes they may be convenient but in the end it stop us from making memories that are conected with a purchase of a game in a real shop with real people and real memories that we will have them with us in all our life.

I agree. Lately, I have been playing through several NES games and just making my way thru them with no help. I could be playing the latest triple a games on my PC or consoles, but lately I have been enjoying making the most out of each game, off the internet, with no DLC.

I gifted my best friend a Sega Genesis 2 along with a couple games and two controllers over the summer. He just had a son about a year ago. I thought it would be a fun experience showing his son when he’s old enough to play how things were 100 years ago when we were kids.

I just recently got back into collecting games. I still had my old Nintendo and super Nintendo games a couple of game boy color games in my original game boy color and the local GameStop had one of those chromatics and I bought it so much nicer to play the Game Boy games on that

It was certainly a lot more humble back then. You either lucked out and had a banger of a title to play through... or you got stuck with something jankie and a horrible experience. But I was yours!
The funny thing is, if all those companies (Capcom, Konami, Sega etc) could easily reissue those old games every generation and people would still buy them up. It's a lot of revenue that very few have cashed in on. Sure remakes and remasters seem to be the marching orders these days.... but those aren't the same game (quality of life 'features' aside). Often times they actually muck up the OG title and it gets lost in development [Final Fantasy VII remake, Metal Gear Solid Collection(s) ].
Honestly, the devs these days don't think about what the market is stacked against them like this. We are in a time where the older games are accessible and here without wait!!
They have to sell us the idea of what they have is worth our time!

I don't care abour physical media, but I do care about games that have a community that greatly expands and improves upon them. Skyrim is a good example of this. The mods that are possible with retro game decompilation-recompilation is another.
