Hi Friends - I did it! I finally finished and published my ebook! This is the story of how I went from depression to dream life in one year by minimizing my world down to the size of a suitcase. I hope my book inspires you to follow your dreams :) If I can do it, you can too! You can find it here: amzn.to/2nyyc7a
Thanks, and I am going to buy you ebook because I want to consider myself a minimalist, but I know I could reduce more. HOWEVER, my wife seems to be a Maximist and I am hoping from your book I can learn how to maybe help my wife and maybe she can even read your book and be inspired. We have been really inspired by that series on HGTV Tiny Homes, though that is a little to small, but my wife and I are considering downsizing considerable once our daughter graduates from high school. PS...l LOVE Ancient Aliens. lol Not sure if that is what you watched.
+ Zoey while I agree with you in a lot of areas, I think at times you are mixing up the ideas of minimalism and conspicuous consumerism, especially when you described your clothes shopping expeditions. To be a minimalist is more than just separating yourself from items and clutter in your life. It is also principals which apply to your everyday spiritual life. I am pleased you mentioned the LV handbags. I refuse to be branded and carry free advertising for someone else. I too used to zombie shop. After work, to fill the empty hole I would go to Bloomies or Saks or Neiman Marcus thinking that would make me feel wholeI. . It was just a panacea., and the only hole it fulfilled was one in my credit cards. Now, I only shop at thrift shops, which I wish you had mentioned in your video. You would not believe the things one can buy there. I no longer have a big flat screen TV. I knocked it in on the floor a year ago and find there is no need to replace it. I do have Netflix, but use my Macbook to watch docs and movies. I have a very empty house, but to me it is full because I have everything which I need. I don't furnish it to suit someone else's needs, I furnish it to suit mine. Paring down is wonderful. Every year I get rid of even more things. The tenet of 'if you have not used it in a year, you won't miss it or need it" is so true. The only things that are important to me are old pictures (photographs and old diaries, the rest is just stuff. Good luck in🇮🇹 Italy! I am moving to Portugal🇵🇹😊
Hi Everyone, I have been receiving a lot of comments in regards to the space behind me not being minimal enough. I am currently being hosted by a family in Italy, meaning it is not MY home. I only own the things brought with me in a suitcase. I minimized my entire life down to a suitcase to make the move so if you are interested in that topic there is a Minimalism Playlist and a Moving to Italy Playlist on my channel. Have a nice day! xx
Zoey Arielle I can NOT believe you have received such comments! So what if this were your home? We are all on our own journey, and need to be kind to those who are somewhere else on the path. Self-appointed, judgement, self-righteous "minimalist police" give minimalism a bad name and make it harder for people new to the idea to consider it.
Not minimalist enough??? Compared to MY cluttered museum of a house, this looks positively naked!! I'm not a minimalist but as a traveller, I have become ruthless about luggage. The rule is simple- : If I can't lift it with one hand, there's too much packed inside and something has to be jettisoned.
Minimalism is a journey individualized to each person. Even if this was your house, who is to stay your version isn't "right." You owe no one an explanation! :)
I personally don't agree with not buying books because a) you can always resell them and b) I really don't want book stores to go extinct. I respect listening to audio books but I don't think it is against minimalism to buy books either. I definitely agree with a lot of the other tips you had though!
When she talks about giving up TV because she didn't like advertisements, but this video is actually an advertisement for Audible (as are many RUclips videos) 🙄
Zoey Arielle Good to know! Thanks. I actually became very skeptical of RUclips because I feel like I'm constantly being sold something. Guess I better shut my mouth, subscribe, and see what you're all about! 🙂 I'm always happy to find vegan minimalists on RUclips!
Thank you! I appreciate that. It's actually illegal to be paid to promote a product or service without telling your audience on RUclips about it and placing it into the description box as well - hopefully that helps you to decipher content :)
As a minimalist the few things I buy are the best _quality_ things that can be bought. A few things but the _best_ things. But that's not for everything I buy, like dish soap or aspirin. Just for bigger longer term things like sofas or rugs. Yes, logos shouldn't define you but high quality shouldn't be sacrificed because of logos. Like I'll always buy Levis because they're long lasting and great quality not because they have a logo. And also because Levis are what I've worn for years so there's that whole "why fix what's not broken" deal. For me it's not about the money it's about the space, the convenience, simplicity and quality of living. I also buy as much American Made as possible. Those are my few tips.
Thepnakhone Xomvimane thanks for your suggestion! I have so many free ones from Amazon! And with my Kindle Fire I get one free one per month, plus I can also borrow one from Amazon. And, apart from Amazon, I can lend and borrow from other Fire users, too. Just in case someone didn't know this. Can you borrow them without physically going to the library? Are there late fees?
Amy Bagnall as long as you have a library card you can just go to your local library's website and register for the app. There should be a section for ebooks and I believe it automatically deletes from your device once the rental period is over so you don't accrue any late fees similar to amazon. I've never actually done it myself since I have amazon prime also but I have registered on the library's site just in case I wanted to
rory bellamy She's decluttering her life. I don't agree about the books, though. Personally I'd love to own a physical copy of every book I own so I can write in them and truly "own" that book.
I always buy second hand with clothes and decorations. I love thrift shopping and garage selling. I would never where items with logos on them. It's free advertising for that company. If they paid me, I would show off their brand.
A tip for people trying to cut back on cell phone data plans, instead of buying a "dumb phone" (as opposed to a smart phone) ... you can go into your smartphone settings and choose which applications can use cell phone data, so you can turn off the Safari/Facebook/Snapchat/Instagram so that you can only use it on Wifi, but still have your data to use for GPS, iMessage, email, etc. So it will essentially be a dumb phone when you're out and about, but you can still use it for the maps and things, and you'll have the option to use your apps when you are around wifi. There really is no sense in getting a basic phone. I was considering getting a basic phone but realized there's a lot to be said about having a phone like the iPhone or Galaxy that has a camera, calculator, note taking, etc all built into it. Hope that helps! Great video, I'm cleaning out my room right this minute!
I started buying the older models outright that you can get with a prepaid plan that I can use as internet for my house. I only pay $70/month with taxes for my phone with unlimited talk/text/data and it also doubles as a Wi-Fi connection for my computer and TV. After a couple years I don't miss it at all because the 2 year old models catch up with what you're used to but then just keep improving after that.
Carrie Mitchell I go through Boost. The unlimited data and mobile hotspot bring my total to $65 which is $70 after taxes. Best decision I ever made getting away from the 2 year contracts.
Carrie Mitchell I just checked and the plan's changed! Thanks for letting me know. The only thing is that it says the mobile hotspot caps off at 8gb, and I usually use way more since I hook my TV up to it. Do you notice a big difference after the 8gb are used up?
The library is a great place. Don't buy books when you can get them for free, while taking advantage of your community's resources- as a resident, you are paying for them anyway.
I can totally adopted everything in here, except the books part - I love books. I love their smell and I love to feel the touch of the pages and really read a lot ❤
me too Mui S! but like Brittany says its about evaluating if something gives you joy. I have all my recipe and books like that on my kindle app on my iphone and my uni text books when they are available electronically. My collection of books is like 3 bookshelves though, but every single one gives me joy and i love sitting and flicking the pages and smelling them and sitting in my library. I think this is okay as it brings joy to my life and is not meaningless possessions. I also know i COULD give them up and go live in the bush if i have too! Or travel the world. But whilst I have a library I will fill it with books :) and also as soon as I have read a book and I know i wont read it again, i donate it or pass it forward! Usually with a little message in the front. I also do book swaps with my mum and two friends where we choose one from an op shop, read and then swap and once we have all read it we donate it back
Me too, but in my case its manga. I usually go to the library to read regular books, but manga (especially new ones) are really limited there. I have almost 4 shelfs full of them totaling in a little over 100, however I try to keep my shelfs clear of clutter.
ya.. i love keeping books n flipping the pages as i read them. bt i do agree on the TV.. i do not have TV in my house, infact.. ive not watch tv for so many yrs.. like since im 19... i only visit cinema if i have movies i wanna watch...
+My Ego lol You're correct! oh...I am toootally kidding ;) ;) Friends and family do right by their friends and family and make them pay....no sharing allowed! ;)
My goodness, I stopped buying so many different things years ago. Now with the economy, I buy even less. I kind of miss being able to buy some stuff. I have been wanting to make some raw cakes, etc. but have a hard time picking out my stuff because the stuff is expensive. I personally feel that the company should pay us to wear their logos.
Diva cup user here and absolutely love it! Best purchase I ever made! I've had mine now for 7 years. Seriously! $44 in 7 years on feminine products (minus the stuff I needed after the birth of my son). We're talking $0.50 a month now for my monthly needs and I've got years more with the thing. They say to replace it after 5 years, but there's no need. However, even if you did, it's totally worth it given it's compatibility and convenience - especially for travel.
Yay, Diva Cup all the way. I love it! Especially the fact that you do not put poisons in your body which tampons are soaked with. My tip for really minimalistic skin care is Baiden Mitten and Organic coconut oil. Baiden Mitten is an AMAZING exfoliation tool. Nothing else comes close to it and I tried them all. As with all the great quality products, it is not cheap, but gosh, you get the wear out of it and you use it over your whole body thus eliminating multitude of other products. Follow it up with the coconut oil which is totally amazing as skin moisturizer and a jar of it will last you forever. I found that going minimalistic with my skincare has given me the best skin I have ever had, plus freed my drawers of all the jars and tubes of useless goo I used before :-)
Love, love, love this video! 😍I'm a minimalist myself, for a year & half now & it's the best lifestyle to live your life more intentionally. Just wanna share my 10 things i don't buy/purchase anymore as a minimalist👇 1. Make up 2. Fast fashion clothings 3. Jewellery 4. Home deco 5. Heels 6. Hardcover books/magazines 7. DVD/VCD/CD 8. Commercial pads/pantyliners 9. TV & TV subscriptions 10. Furniture Looking forward for more of your minimalism videos! 👍😍
This is the first video I watched of yours - thank you!! I just ended a relationship with a man who is the absolute opposite of a minimalist. I felt like I was drowning in stuff and mindless things when I was with him. I have never defined myself as a minimalist, but the more I learn about it the more I realize that this is what I've been transitioning to for years! I'm so much more at peace now that I am back to my minimalist lifestyle - basic clothing, no tv, basic internet, basic phone, no Facebook or mindless social media. It was scary at first but I've been able to really focus on the things that I need and want to do and work on rekindling and building concrete friendships with people versus the superficial keeping up to date with people over social media. It's so liberating! Also - Diva Cups are THE BEST!! I transitioned to using it just over a year ago and also invested in Thinx period panties as insurance in case the cup slipped. I've never been happier and have saved SOOOOO MUCH MONEY!!!
Julia D ehat about when you use a public bathroom, I never used one just because I don't want to wash or boil something that was full of blood nor do I eat to use pots I use for cooking for thst or want blood on my sink
Jenny -IG-BaddAssJenny , you only need to empty them every 12 hours! So I empty mine in the morning after my first cup of coffee and then again at night before bed (if I'm heavy) some nights I don't sleep with it so there really is never a weird public bathroom time! They are awesome try it out if you haven't but use panty liners at first it can be tricky to learn how to position it right at first :)
Hi Zoey, thanks for this!! My partner and I both grew up in homes with parents who hoarded, and it is so hard to unlearn the bad habits we developed as kids!! We like STUFF. On top of that, I think I might have a shopping/gathering stuff addiction. I find it really fun and rewarding to search for good sales, so it is hard to stop. I am getting more inspired by watching you. We already clean out and donate items, but the hard part is not bringing in more stuff again. I really appreciate your ideas!
+Nicole Baker-Wagner Nicole! This makes me so happy :) just keep decluttering and donating and you will find so much clarity and happiness with less things. You can do it! I believe in you :)
I used to be such a vintage clothing hoarder! I thought I was saving money, but really I was wasting it. Most of the time I was buying stuff I'd never really wear, didn't fit quite right, or things that needed to be fixed or that I needed to sew new buttons on. I'd finally had it when I put an old coat in the drier and it basically disintegrated and made a mess. I sold a lot of my vintage on Etsy or eBay and I still have a few unique things, but I decided I have no time or space to be a clothing collector. I still love looking at vintage stuff, but I only go a couple times a year and really put things through a vetting process before I make a purchase.
Yes, love your insights Emily! Thank you for sharing this. We are all on our own journeys so it's great to hear how you have come to find minimalism - sharing helps others believe they can achieve it as well :)
For the books, instead of buying, there is probably a library nearby (I know we still have many in my area), which have thousands of free books! This is for those who still like to hold the physical book ... and you don't keep it when you're done (less clutter!!) I can sometimes tune out if I'm listening to one thing for too long, depending on what I'm listening to. However, you can get audiobooks through a lot of libraries now, too!! :) Also free!!!
I never buy - make up, perfumes, cellphones, laptops, almost any gadget, no coffee, alcohol, no fancy clothes, no dresses. I almost never go to wedding or birthday parties.
Thanks Zoey :) You are absolutely right about not watching TV! Since I started using my laptop to watch programs that interest me , I am not constantly bombarded with advertisements which has removed a huge irritation from my life! My transition away from the TV started when I was having a bout of depression and couldn't handle all the negative stories on the news etc. Secondly, I do not constantly go looking around the shops like I used to do. I had a bad habit of doing this in my lunch hour when I worked full time. Instead, I started going for a walk away from the shops which I found much more calming. These two things were not conscious decisions, they just evolved. Also agree about using menstrual cups. What a liberating discovery that was!
This was such a useful video! Recently i've learnt to delete all shopping apps from my phone (amazon, ebay, etc) so that I don't browse them when i'm bored and unnecessary spend money. When there is something I actually need/want i'll do it on the safari app where i'll have to enter all of my details, this makes the purchase meaningful and makes me double think my purchase! I also have started unsubscribing from email lists from company's like Yankee Candle, Waterstones, etc so that I again don't mindlessly buy more things that I don't really need seeming as I have a lot of books to read and candles to burn!
I stopped buying those big plastic garbage bags with the drawstrings, and instead I just use the free, small bags (paper or plastic) that they put your groceries in at the store. It saves money, and it reminds me to take the garbage out often which is great because it never has a chance to get stinky!
I dont ever really look at labels and I dont feel like I get manipulated by ads or media. I don't allow negativity into my brain either and don't have cable for the same reason it is so annoying.
TheOtherSideOfAlex I'm the same with labels. if I like it, and I feel like an update, I'll buy it. usually that means I have a little $10 purse from Ross that is some random no name brand, but it'll be cute and then I can pass on my bag that's still got life in it, or trash it if its like my last one that got destroyed.
i completely agree Also i'd like to add in terms of food, drinking healthy supplements and fasting periodically has help reduce my spending with food. I dont crave junk as much because i make smoothies with seaweed powder, moringa and acai berry these super foods nourish my bones and organs so i dont crave eating out as much thus lowering my expenses. My fridge only has the things i need to fuel my body and it helps keep my weight steady too :)
It's Good to hear these things put the way you stated it. I have been doing most of these but have found myself getting sucked into consumerism lately and needed a reminder. I subbed. 😊
Hi everyone! Regarding home decor, I encourage you to use the change of season to make your own instead of buying and buying. For instance, I enjoy going on walks in the foredt and pick up things like beautiful twigs( looks great in a vase), stonesor even moss. This is a great excuse to go out in nature and costs nothing. Also, it is nice to enjoy a nice cup of chocolate that you prepared at home and took with you in a thermos 🌟
I definitely have a book addiction, but there is an easy solution to that and that's a library, which doesn't cost you a penny! I personally find listening to a book not quite the same as reading, so I either buy really cheap books from charity shops or I ask people if they are giving away books and if I can have/borrow them which is a great way to get around it :)
I love Audiblebooks! I've had it for a couple of years and it's true - you're learning while doing the mundane things, ie., driving, cooking, etc. Like you, I stopped watching tv - no cable, no Netflix. My home decor is either handed down high quality furniture or unique pieces that reflect me. I stopped buying clothing with the exception of socks and underwear. The small amount of makeup I use I buy high quality instead of a lot of cheaper ones. My only vice is skincare, and I am free to spend more on it now, on medical grade skincare that actually works. I'm also selling or donating the things I don't use or need and my garage is a lot roomier. I really enjoyed your video and makes me feel good that others are living more of a minimalistic lifestyle, too. Cheers!
Zo! I absolutely love this video ❤️ You are such an inspiration, All of the things you said I was already thinking!! On your jewelry note, I've been having serious allergic reactions to cheap jewelry, and I'm starting to invest in better quality jewelry that will last much longer and doesn't give me a rash 😅 Love you so much girl!! Xoxo
Loooove this! I stopped decorating for holidays too and instead I like to get just a few seasonal wardrobe pieces that feel really festive and I can only wear during that specific time of year, to keep me in the spirit 😊✨
newfnshow031 True to a point, but 96.00 bucks a year for only watching it a few times a month or less can go to better use. I cut off Netflix simply because I would go several months before a "binge" lol Then I realized my money went to better use without it.
Great tips Zoey! I don't watch TV too, I prefer watching youtube! Your video inspired me to be careful on what to buy, because I always tend to buy things I don't use.I think I'm going to be a minimalist ! Love you 😻💕
I'm not a minimalist BUT I do have a strong rule of not buying clothes without trying it on. Also, I will only buy a piece that I need and that fits me the best, it has to be something I absolutely love. This way I avoid having a full closet without having actually nothing to wear...
I don't understand how anyone could buy clothes without trying them on. If I did that, it'd be a disaster. Maybe being tall and large chested has too many disadvantages when it comes to finding clothes that fit. If you fall within the size limits clothing manufacturers consider "acceptable", you're super lucky! Being able to pull something off a rack and automatically have it look fabulous would be a dream. :P
m0L3ify tall and big breasted SUCKS. sleeves and legs too short. button ups are almost out of the question. it's infuriating. and bras and pants are so $$$$$ a nightmare
I seldom try anything clothing on in the store because I'm not able to get out and go shopping. So i order online and if I'm unsure about the size I'll order one in both of the sizes in question. At home I can take all the time I need to evaluate whether a piece is for me or not. Then I just return the items I don't want to the store. Easy peasy
Loved this video so much! I'm from Canada too and totally related to 100% of this video! I am in the process of becoming more minimal, and this video inspired me to keep going!! ALSO amazing tip to get an audible subscription instead of going to chapters all the time! I'm officially a new subby :)
Hey Zoey, this is the first (and so far, only) video I've seen from you. It popped up under my suggested videos, so I was intrigued enough to watch. Though I don't exactly consider myself a minimalist, I have become somewhat interested in the topic lately. I was surprised to find myself in agreement with you, though, in regard to the things I don't really buy anymore. Love Audible.com, by the way - best app ever! However, I haven't yet gotten rid of the thousands (yes, thousands!) of books double stacking my many, many bookcases. I could part with most things quite easily, but books are my weakness! I guess if I were going to move to another country, and found myself faced with the prospect of either hauling them along with me (impossible), or putting them in storage (costly, and to no purpose), rather than either of those options, I'd probably have a big garage sale to unload most of them, only keeping a few, as you have done. Oh, and as to that last item, I'm happy to say that I have reached an age where I simply don't have to worry about that one anymore! LOL!
I don't know how I landed on your channel, but I'm happy I did. Listening to you is like a breathe fresh air. You are great motivational speaker. Minimalist looks good on you. I am a subscriber and looking forward to more of your videos.👍
Great video! Everything you said really spoke to me. I have really been trying to not shop much at all lately and it feels great! Less stuff to find space for and more money in my wallet! Money that I can use for trips and other experiences.
Raymond Hessbrook i really wish I could do this. I hear Tiny Homes are a terrible investment but I could totally live in one. Sorry it wasn't your choice tho.
Glad I found your channel! New subscriber! Love these tips and the reasons behind it. I have also stopped buying seasonal decorations or changing my decor to match the seasons. It's so freeing! I stopped buying clothes that doesn't match my current lifestyle or clothes that doesn't currently fit hoping to fit into one day.😊
Zoey Arielle After watching part of your video I was thinking how I have too much stuff around me (again) these days. Keep in mind, it's not much at all. But I think you get more sensitive to energy -- and the energy that each item holds. It's interesting, cause I know feel more comfortable in my home with less things around me -- and really love, love, love the open space I feel and see when I open drawers, closets and around the room. Hard to explain, but maybe you get that too :) Also, I want to say that I like that you're making videos about this. It didn't even dawn on me. I live this minimalistic lifestyle and when you're isolated in your practice you tend to feel alone and quite strange/different than others. I seemed to totally forget (until I stumbled upon your video) that there are others like me. Crazy I know, but it was a nice reminder.
I started watching the video thinking I would find some new tips, but I had stopped buying clothes, jewelry, feminine products, decorations and TV for many years already. It wasn't done at the same time, but I have reached a point in which I learned how to live with less and less things. Nice video, Zoey!
Great video. I fully relate with many of the topics you mentioned; books, makeup, and clothing in particular. I feel like we could become good friends you and I. I also avoid buying anything with plastic or styrofoam in it, let that be water bottles or plastic packed fruits and vegetables (this one gets on my nerves at times). I used to go out a lot to restaurants, but now I enjoy cooking my plant-based whole-foods meals at home with friends and family. One other thing, I try to walk as much as possible, I feel like Europe makes that much easier than if you are living in the States, though. Finally, alcohol ! Stopped wasting my money and life on that liver-killer vice and everything started working better for me. These are my tips. Much love
DVDs: Don't buy (this coming from a guy who has a LOT of DVDs) if you only plan to watch a movie once. Don't even rent it. Get a free library card and borrow a movie from the Public Library. Try to get them early because they are often in bad shape if they have been borrowed a lot. They have fist run movies the day they are released to the public. Books: Check out a book from the library. They also have audio books and ebooks. Some of which can be checked out online.
This video is the first "minimalist" video I've ever watched. It really has made me re think my life. This seems like such a stress free healthy lifestyle. Your appearance in front of the camera is so professional by the way! You've earned a new subscriber. I love your channel.
Good tips!!! Few weeks ago my cousin went to my bedroom to see the house where we live (we are here from 10 years now and he went only the first year) and he said "It's so empty" ....and I started smiling because I haven't notice yet that my room was so minimalist =) =) =) I was very happy, because I don't feel that my room is empty, but full of my time, my hobbies, hours spent reading (kindle, so I haven't to buy physical books)!!! Now I'm already downsizing and I want to have less and donate things that I don't need!!! =) Have a great day Zoey, thank you for this video, so inspiring!!! Ciaoooo
+Paola Bari Yay Paola! Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. I am so happy for you :) what an amazing feeling! I am also so proud you are downsizing as it isn't easy at first! I hope you are having a great day :) all the very best to you!! ❤️ xoxo
I moved to Madrid from Toronto last year and I feel like moving here has encouraged and helped me live more of a minimalist lifestyle! I haven't shopped for clothings in 4 months and it feels great!
Good vid! Ive been living out of one 82 liter backpack for almost 11 years! 92 countries nonstop 1 week to 3 months in each country. When i buy an item....i get rid of one. Never grow the posessions! Gets easier every year. Have zero attachments to stuff.....
Absolutely love your videos. They are so inspiring. Thanks for making them. I would love to see videos with something along the lines of "books I am reading and what I am learning". I love reflective videos. Thanks for taking the time to share your life and ideas with us :) Cheers!
Hey Zoey, thanks for your video! Like other people who've commented, I don't even consider myself a minimalist but I've been buying very few things for the last year, and I feel great about not owning quite as much stuff anymore. I agree with you on many points, including about not buying new clothes too often. In fact I wear my clothes for quite a few years (until basically I'm not comfortable being seen in them anymore), and I try to buy to replace rather than buy to add. I mean, if I buy something I try to get rid of its predecessor, so that I don't accumulate stuff. Also, I've never enjoyed owning books and, like you, I only posses a few reference books I think I'm likely to go back to, such as foreign-language study books, cookbooks etc. I borrow almost all the books I read from the local library, and I love the feeling of returning them after I've finished reading. No attachment, no dusting, and no space taken by countless books! Also, BBC radio 4 have a lot of free, brilliantly narrated reading, so if you ever get tired of audible you can always check the BBC iPlayer for entertaining content to listen to :) Best wishes from a viewer in the UK x
Enjoyed hearing your comments about not buying logo'ed clothing or accessories. I feel the same way. You should not need the brand to help define yourself as a person. Thank you. And I haven't watched broadcast TV, or listened to broadcast radio in over 15 years. I also grew tired of the constant pressure of being targeted. Also, most advertising in the USA has focused on a fear-based format. I too have a huge audible.com library and you can find my book there too. (wink) Glad I'm not alone in my thinking on this planet.
I love this video! I now buy plain solid clothes I can wear often and only makeup that I know I wear regularly . Love seeing someone who shares the same mindset! Thank you!
Love the content of this video.I recently dropped off a lot of my clothes at the donation center and sold some of the stuff at a local store called Buffalo. What a liberating feeling.I plan on following your advice. Thanks for the tips.
Yes! I love your view points! Having a certain brand on your clothing or accessories doesn't define who we are or the lives we live! Recently I've stopped doing that as well and stared shopping at thrift stores when I need clothes!
You just gave me my new year resolution. I am borderline shopaholic. And i resolve, I will not buy a single piece of clothing this year. no matter, if mine is not trendy enough, or is repeated at an event. Thank you !
I totally agree about not buying cheap jewelry. I was totally on a roll with avoiding buying pieces from h and m and forever 21, until I was Christmas shopping. I bought two pairs of earrings and they both broke over the course of the past few weeks. I am reminded why I stopped buying them in the first place.
The more people who share what they stopped buying it will spread. I was encouraged by your choices and may this trend spread. We don't need more things...we need what is free like nature, reading, meditating, quiet breathing and helping someone else whenever we can.
Great vid! I adopted most of the things you mentioned about 2 years ago and I am happier, more self-aware and have saved tons of money. It's amazing to see someone else living this life, too!
I like this video I just have to disagree with not watching news that is upsetting. People in war-torn areas or places where injustice is happening deserve our attention.
Zoey, you're amazing. I'm definately interested and have been for quite some time with minimalism. Just never had that urge to go minimalist cold turkey. But now I'm back in the game. Subscribed ;) Keep up the good work dearie
I really think some of your points are really relevant, not only for environment but for that minimalist mindset. But one can be minimalist and have a luxury brand purse that will last for ever... And how contradictory is it to say you don't like brands and then mention that for fall you're taking a Starbucks latte and go to that coffee shop... And for books, you can be minimalist in other ways: reading is an exercise that stimulates and audible books do not provide the same intellectual exercise! You can enjoy books by trading them with your friends or going to the library to borrow some books or have a kindl, so it won't take place, but reading 6 books over and over? Really, is that the minimalism you want to encourage? Minimalism should not be restraining or boring!
Nisso Käser but I don't think she's saying everyone who's looking to live a more minimalist life has to do it how she does it. I'm not sure, but I think her choice of audiobooks instead of books is more about how she found herself buying books and never reading them in the past. Now she's found a way that works for her. Listening to books is just what's fun for her right now. She has a subscription for audible but cancelled her subscription to Netflix because of which one she'd get more use from. It's all about finding your own joy and if that includes Starbucks on occasion that's okay. If you like having a brand name bag that's okay too. It's when the reason for having the bag in the first place was to show off you can afford the brand that it's a problem. She probably sold her bag because it reminded her of that "zombie shopping" feeling. Everyone's journey is different! Love, don't hate.
Woa, 'Gotta have you' get me! I love that song! :)) And I like your advises. Been following them for some time already, without even knowing your channel or joining official minimalist movement. Subbed
I only buy clothes on clearance. so if I can't find what I want. then I don't get it lol same with the jewelry ,since I've started stretching my ears. I've maybe bought 12 pairs the past 7 years.
Hi Friends - I did it! I finally finished and published my ebook! This is the story of how I went from depression to dream life in one year by minimizing my world down to the size of a suitcase. I hope my book inspires you to follow your dreams :) If I can do it, you can too! You can find it here: amzn.to/2nyyc7a
You're one of the most gorgeous girls I've ever seen. Certainly in this video :-)
PS...l LOVE Ancient Aliens. lol Not sure if that is what you watched.
where can i download it for free ? free=minimalist
I read your book Zoey! It inspired me a lot! Thank you :) :*
Apparently I've been a "minimalist" for years and didn't even know it.
marxalenina same
marxalenina ... I was thinking the same ... lol.
marxalenina lol that's what I was thinking too!
marxalenina hahahah me tooo
yeah me aswell. I just stumbled across this and I was curious. :)
Wow Michele, thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment. This has truly brightened my day
Not minimalist enough??? Compared to MY cluttered museum of a house, this looks positively naked!! I'm not a minimalist but as a traveller, I have become ruthless about luggage. The rule is simple- : If I can't lift it with one hand, there's too much packed inside and something has to be jettisoned.
I'm watching your video on what to stop buying and your makeup is gorgeous! Do you have any makeup tutorials? :)
"zombie shopping" is the best name for how it really looks like
1978's Dawn of the Dead looks like a zombie movie but its really about rampant consumerism and mall culture
When she talks about giving up TV because she didn't like advertisements, but this video is actually an advertisement for Audible (as are many RUclips videos) 🙄
+Tiny Feisty Vegan No it's not sponsored whatsoever.
Awesome! That is good to know! Thank you!
Tiny Feisty Vegan AND "STARBUCKS" AMONG OTHER STUF..
Make list before going to the grocery store, prevents you from overbuying and wasting food. Especially fruits and vegetables
+Katherine Dietsch great tip Katherine! :)
Katherine Dietsch and don't go grocery shopping when your hungry.
+ᏙᎠ ᎠᎰᏚᏟᎾᎡᎠᏙᏁᎢᎰᏙ ᏚᏤᏚᎢᎬᎷᏙ ᏁᎾᏚ ᏚᏙᏞᎢᏙᎢᎾᏒᎰᏴᏌᏚ Great tips! Thank you for sharing!
Haha I don't buy this stuff either, but that's because I'm broke....I guess it's cool to just not buy it by choice though
Lucy Allen lol 😄
Quality over quantity! 😉
Lucy Allen lol same
I dont think substituting a book for an audible book is a good idea. Its not the same!!
I'm disabled and can't drive, so by the time I pay late fees, I might as well buy the book. Mostly I buy the Kindle versions.
Amy Bagnall you can borrow books from the library onto your kindle
I've never actually done it myself since I have amazon prime also but I have registered on the library's site just in case I wanted to
I felt so sad when she said that 💔 I LOVE books
I like her ideas, Elite logos are a slave brand of an envious arrogant mindset , she is Freeing her Mind from the Matrix , listen closely
rory bellamy She's decluttering her life. I don't agree about the books, though. Personally I'd love to own a physical copy of every book I own so I can write in them and truly "own" that book.
rory bellamy nice analogy. I liked the matrix 😉🙂
I always buy second hand with clothes and decorations. I love thrift shopping and garage selling. I would never where items with logos on them. It's free advertising for that company. If they paid me, I would show off their brand.
Going to the library is free. You can rent audio books on the library's website.
Really free? Here we pay a few euro every month.
Stijn Janssen yes in the US libraries are all free
I only display logos for brands I am willing to advertise - it definitely makes clothing shopping easier.
I wish she wasn't so shy about talking about the cup. Periods shouldn't be a taboo topic
Becca it's probably more tmi than shy, some come here for minimalism topics not periods
Becca not all minimalists use the cups. Some use washable pads.
TacosOfInjustice yuck!!
➿📵
I love listening to women talk about their periods. It really turns me on. I get a massive erection from it!
I don't watch TV because it really boring now. The internet is my new TV.
Ty Adalyn boost is only $50 for all that.
that'll save you $240 a year alone.
Carrie Mitchell I go through Boost. The unlimited data and mobile hotspot bring my total to $65 which is $70 after taxes. Best decision I ever made getting away from the 2 year contracts.
I pay the flat $50 and Hotspot is included.
????
Maybe it's different state to state.
Great comment, thank you!
Oh GOD I could NOT give up netflix! buuuuut I also don't pay for it..soooo....
Katarina Hellwig ah netflix ! don't know what I'd do without orange is the new black and Jessica Jones! :)
Katarina Hellwig nobody really pays for it. Shhhh everyone shares
Katarina Hellwig netflix for free? I need that!!!
+My Ego lol You're correct! oh...I am toootally kidding ;) ;) Friends and family do right by their friends and family and make them pay....no sharing allowed! ;)
kodi -- look it up
Sephora really is an addiction
The makeup artists at Sephora aren't actually trained makeup artists. Go to MAC or a real makeup store for the real deal. Sephora is a joke.
Yes it is!!!
Melanie integrity agree. logos are free advertising not to mention tacky
M integrity --> They may pay you if only if you're celebrity. If not, pls don't ask such stupid wish.
Just wanna share my 10 things i don't buy/purchase anymore as a minimalist👇
1. Make up
2. Fast fashion clothings
3. Jewellery
4. Home deco
5. Heels
6. Hardcover books/magazines
7. DVD/VCD/CD
8. Commercial pads/pantyliners
9. TV & TV subscriptions
10. Furniture
Looking forward for more of your minimalism videos! 👍😍
Love your tips! Thank you for sharing Amirah :D xox
as an environmentalist, minimalism is the way to go
Rocio Ramirez good job! I try my best too, I only thrift :)
:) Also free!!!
gayle lynn. Lots of libraries also offer digital books now! I love libraries!
Thank you so much for sharing Gloria!
Those are amazing tips! Thank you for sharing Emily :)
I stopped buying those big plastic garbage bags with the drawstrings, and instead I just use the free, small bags (paper or plastic) that they put your groceries in at the store. It saves money, and it reminds me to take the garbage out often which is great because it never has a chance to get stinky!
+One Peachy Vegan great tip :) thank you!
I dont ever really look at labels and I dont feel like I get manipulated by ads or media. I don't allow negativity into my brain either and don't have cable for the same reason it is so annoying.
You seem mentally strong, I like that.
I think the labeled brands are usually ugly, LV seriously ugly handbags.
Melissa Johnson I totally agree the bags at Target sometimes are so cute then I look at Fendi or Prada like dafuq is this?
Great video, Zoey! And huge congratulations on surpassing 5000 subbies!! YAY!!! :)
Thanks Eileen :D !!
i completely agree Also i'd like to add in terms of food, drinking healthy supplements and fasting periodically has help reduce my spending with food.
I subbed. 😊
Thank you California Girl! :)
If you're poor then this is just your life...instead of deciding to stop buying stuff, I actually never started. haha
Anja Fourie there's a positive to everything :)
Great tip Violette :) Thank you for sharing!
I have started downsizing my life, and I am a lot happier. I've been trying to stay away from logos
+Rachel Briggs Good for you Rachel! :) keep it up!
You've actually inspired me to have another "whole house purge"... Clean out closets, bookshelves, cabinets, makeup, etc. TY!
SO proud Gloria! You go girl!!! Declutter! :D
Great tip love!
StrictlyVegan I like the library idea too but when it comes to new books, they're always taken and you gotta wait forever! 😂
Cheers!
+Lizzy's den Amazing tips Lizzy! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
Xoxo
MAC
Good tips! Welcome to the minimalist life! I've been practicing for many years. ;-) My only weakness - books. Audio is a great option.
Books are my biggest weakness :)
Loooove this! I stopped decorating for holidays too and instead I like to get just a few seasonal wardrobe pieces that feel really festive and I can only wear during that specific time of year, to keep me in the spirit 😊✨
Great comment Haley :) Thank you!
I appreciate what zoey said about logos! I feel I have come to a similar conclusion lately about buying things with logos on it.
Glad to hear Claire :)
I don't know about canceling netflix though....
Go on the Netflix website and click cancel account/delete account
Sophie Grave I think what he/she are trying to say is they enjoy Netflix so much they don't think they can cancel it 😊
Karen Juarez EXACTLYYYYY
I'm saying the amount of quality content they offer is worth more then the $8 a month they charge.
Maybe not to her though. Everything is relative.
newfnshow031 True to a point, but 96.00 bucks a year for only watching it a few times a month or less can go to better use.
Love you 😻💕
+Hawra Saeed ahh ❤️ you always make me so happy 😄 I am so proud of you!! Love you!
Easy peasy
I'm not saying that it always applies, but it looks like veganism and minimalism go hand in hand. I've found my people!! :D
Woohoo! :D Happy to have you here!
Loved this video so much! I'm from Canada too and totally related to 100% of this video! I am in the process of becoming more minimal, and this video inspired me to keep going!! ALSO amazing tip to get an audible subscription instead of going to chapters all the time! I'm officially a new subby :)
+JessBeWild yay! 😄 Thank you so much Jess ❤️ So happy to connect with you!
LOL!
Thank you for sharing more of your story Debbie :) Welcome to the family!! xx
netflix has many documentaries that are very educational
LoL true. The documentaries on RUclips are free (for me at least).
Why have netflix when you can torrent anything in 1080p?
Ger Unkwon how do you torrent? Is that a download? And how do you know it doesn't have viruses?
I don't know how I landed on your channel, but I'm happy I did. Listening to you is like a breathe fresh air. You are great motivational speaker. Minimalist looks good on you. I am a subscriber and looking forward to more of your videos.👍
Great video! Everything you said really spoke to me. I have really been trying to not shop much at all lately and it feels great! Less stuff to find space for and more money in my wallet! Money that I can use for trips and other experiences.
Yes! Yes! Yes! :)
I'd love to see you minimalist makeup collection, and book collection!
Thank you for watching Ashley! Will do :) xo
Love your video!!! What you said is so true! especially during this holiday season. Keep following your dreams and blessings to you!
Thank you so much
I just sold everything I own to move into a tiny home and hide. How's that for minimalizim?
+Raymond Hessbrook good for you Raymond
@Zoey Arielle. Oh it wasn't by choice honey lol
Raymond Hessbrook i really wish I could do this. I hear Tiny Homes are a terrible investment but I could totally live in one. Sorry it wasn't your choice tho.
It's not an investment, it's a liability to me. it's actually a brilliant idea let me know when you figure it out.
hahaha!
Glad I found your channel! New subscriber! Love these tips and the reasons behind it. I have also stopped buying seasonal decorations or changing my decor to match the seasons. It's so freeing! I stopped buying clothes that doesn't match my current lifestyle or clothes that doesn't currently fit hoping to fit into one day.😊
+Uyen Smith Yay! So happy for your positive changes Uyen :) thank you for joining the family here!! Xx
I love being a minimalist! It gives you such freedom!
+LoveGuruBlaire ain't that the truth!! xx
I love your thoughts Blaire :) I agree!
I started watching the video thinking I would find some new tips, but I had stopped buying clothes, jewelry, feminine products, decorations and TV for many years already. It wasn't done at the same time, but I have reached a point in which I learned how to live with less and less things. Nice video, Zoey!
You are an inspiration Maria :) !
I stopped TV 5 or 6 years ago, and it still feels very good. (especially it is good to be less exposed to ads)
:)
Much love
Amazing tips! Thank you so much for sharing Joe :)
DVDs:
Don't buy (this coming from a guy who has a LOT of DVDs) if you only plan to watch a movie once. Don't even rent it. Get a free library card and borrow a movie from the Public Library. Try to get them early because they are often in bad shape if they have been borrowed a lot. They have fist run movies the day they are released to the public.
Books:
Check out a book from the library. They also have audio books and ebooks. Some of which can be checked out online.
I'm so happy I found this channel! Subscribed while watching and plan on watching more! Thanks! Look forward to watching your future videos.
Thank you Fernando!
Your shirt is minimalist!
"...without logos because I want people to see something else"
mission accomplished
Oh my word...
Lol without enough fabric and there’s nothing Minimalist about her cleavage on camera always.
@@lovingpurrs8388 geesh harsh..focus on what she is saying..so judgmental but why ???
This video is the first "minimalist" video I've ever watched. It really has made me re think my life. This seems like such a stress free healthy lifestyle. Your appearance in front of the camera is so professional by the way! You've earned a new subscriber. I love your channel.
+melissalucy21 Melissa! ❤️ thank you for the kind comment, I really appreciate it 😊 welcome!
Hi Arwa :) Thank you! I actually have a whole Playlist on the topic: "Book Recommendations" xx
I totally agree I do zero logos
Thanks for the video! I like that you summarise after each point you have given. The background is lovely, too.
+ShiaGirl18 Thank you :)
You're welcome!
I didn't know I was a minimalist, I thought I was just a cheapskate!
Thirty years ago or more, it was called "voluntary simplicity" and we got really into that movement. Sometimes it's called "frugality."
Also, BBC radio 4 have a lot of free, brilliantly narrated reading, so if you ever get tired of audible you can always check the BBC iPlayer for entertaining content to listen to :)
Best wishes from a viewer in the UK x
Thank you for sharing your amazing tips and your journey with us :)
Thank you!
I would like to add that baying 2nd hand helps to protect the environment and save you money.
Love the content of this video.I recently dropped off a lot of my clothes at the donation center and sold some of the stuff at a local store called Buffalo. What a liberating feeling.I plan on following your advice. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you for watching :) You're right, it is SO liberating! Proud of you.
everything but the books ... I read them all, I love them all...
Same 😁🤙
I have ~650 books in my house (mostly in my bedroom). No shame!
Yes! I love your view points! Having a certain brand on your clothing or accessories doesn't define who we are or the lives we live! Recently I've stopped doing that as well and stared shopping at thrift stores when I need clothes!
It's good for the environment and my wallet lol
The book addiction resonates with me. My New Year's Resolution is to read all my unread books before buying any more.
That's a great resolution Mary!
You just gave me my new year resolution. I am borderline shopaholic. And i resolve, I will not buy a single piece of clothing this year. no matter, if mine is not trendy enough, or is repeated at an event. Thank you !
+Chintan Kella you can do it!!!
OMG ALL THESE THINGS! You just listed all the things I stopped buying too. I feel like I'm not where I want to be yet but on my way at least!
+mirambling glad to hear love! 😄 Keep it up!!
I just buy clothes online because of the flexibility of looking for specific pieces that are not brand oriented
thrift stores are good too!
Carmen Benitez me too but alot of times they don't fit
Hanna I purchase something inexpensive to figure out my size and then keep ordering
Carmen Benitez good idea
Great tips. I aspire to be a minimalist. I still have lots of work to do but your video is for me a step in the right direction. Thanks for sharing!
+LaTostis thank you for watching :)
Trisha Paytas needs to see this video lol
Raven Monroe foreal!!
Raven Monroe most people similar do. I can think of a large handful of you tubers who would benefit from this.
Laura P Everyone who does hauls
Raven Monroe ciaoobella needs to see this video
That woman needs professional help lol
The more people who share what they stopped buying it will spread. I was encouraged by your choices and may this trend spread. We don't need more things...we need what is free like nature, reading, meditating, quiet breathing and helping someone else whenever we can.
+terry crane amen Terry!!! Thank you for the uplifting comment
It was a good video, I try to live minimally! Talk about food and shelf life!
Great vid! I adopted most of the things you mentioned about 2 years ago and I am happier, more self-aware and have saved tons of money. It's amazing to see someone else living this life, too!
+rosasNoir yay :) I love to hear that!!
I like this video I just have to disagree with not watching news that is upsetting. People in war-torn areas or places where injustice is happening deserve our attention.
Senada SteadfastSlaveofALLAH Exactly!
Zoey, you're amazing. I'm definately interested and have been for quite some time with minimalism. Just never had that urge to go minimalist cold turkey. But now I'm back in the game. Subscribed ;) Keep up the good work dearie
You go Erkut! Get that dream life :D xx
Don't give Arielle a hard time people ref Starbucks! It's her life, it's her choice of how she spends her money and what she "treats" herself too.
Valencia Sanchez similar!! I almost exclusively buy clothes gently used, so it's recycling AND much cheaper. :) right there with ya, girl!
I saw you on minimalism amino! Super cool Chanel! I'll keep an eye on it! Much love!
Thanks for stopping by Monica :D xox
I'm glad I found your channel. You're a girl after my own heart!
Good stuff Zoey! Great idea to stop spending money on things that you don't actually need. Focused living creates a focused life.
Thank you for watching and leaving a kind comment Derrick :)
A cashier at Publix told me if she doesn't use something in a few days, she returns the items to Publix.
Great tip Jess! Thank you for sharing!
