Thank you for sharing something so personal and an issue that has affected so many of my family members. When you have depression and anxiety but you’re too anxious to take medication because you’re worried about the side effects and all the what if’s, yeah that’s me. I wish there was a video like this that I could have watched like a decade ago when I was really struggling and at my worst. I’ve been going to therapy for a decade but this video made me rethink the medication route, it doesn’t seem as terrifying as I had imagined. Thank you so much for taking the time to help others understand something that isn’t talked about much

As a mental health therapist and also someone who has been on antidepressants now for almost a year I found this video really informative and validating. I had the exact same feeling when I first went on my medication, “oh my gosh there are people who feel this way all the time? People who don’t fixate and get anxious about literally everything big and small?” I definitely feel like going on medication was the right decision for me. It changed my life completely in such a positive way and I feel like I’m finally who I was meant to be without being weighed down by my wonky neurotransmitters. Thank you for making this video!

This is amazing, I couldn’t have explained it better especially the part where you said that you still can ‘function’ AND be depressed. Many people think if you still get things done - you’re not depressed. A lot of times I’ve experienced this with people not taking me serious enough. I run my own business, live alone, have a dog, have support from friends and family yet still suffer from severe depression and anxiety. Love how transparent you are, you have such a great spirit! 🦋

I agree. But at times you can also question the wording of "functioning". Because - at least for me - I've become so good at pretending to be functioning or I just try SO hard to try to appear it. And like you said, despite being severely depressed. There are many types of depressions and also people have different ways of trying to cope with it

I’m only 25 and social anxiety was not talked about. People just kept telling me not to be so shy as if it was something I was choosing to do. My mother had anxiety, but she never talked about it so I never knew it existed and when I started to have major anxiety and panic attacks it was just ignored. I didn’t figure any of it out until college. And only recently upon reflection I’ve begun to realize I’ve had this major anxiety disorder and depression since I was 2. Or at least that’s as far back as I actually have memory. Thank you for talking about this. If mental health had been discussed and more normalized growing up maybe I could have gotten help and developed healthy coping mechanisms sooner. I’ll always believe in having these discussions for that reason, we can help people understand what’s going on within their minds so they can get help themselves.

Reading this made me realize that the extreme "shyness" I experienced when I was young (which would regularly lead to me throwing up) was most likely anxiety (something my mother also experienced but never talked about). Thanks for sharing.

I had a similar experience. I sometimes wonder if it is a consequence of living as an introvert in this extroverted world. As Esteé mentioned, I think we learn to "push through" these issues, maybe because the society requires us to do so, but this impacts out mental health...

And world in general! I hope it grows and continues. Authenticity and vulnerability breed inspiration and connection. Your words at the end about worrying about nothing being able to help brought me to tears. I’ve been struggling with anxiety that’s recently turned to depression for about a decade. Too afraid/ worried/ anxious, and ashamed to try meds. Especially with the rise in anti pharma ( which I understand), but I think I’ve tried pretty much everything and it’s time to try medication. I’ll never know until I try and it’s not a permanent decision. I think in a lot of cases the stigma keeps people suffering. Thank you for your story 💕

I like that you mention depression doesn't always mean staying in bed. I know several people who are clearly depressed but reject the idea of getting help because they go to work and do every day things without much issue. A lot of people just think being depressed is just how things have to be, or "everyone's depressed" so they're nothing special, but it doesn't have to be like that.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I’ve struggled with the anxiety/depression combo for most of my life, and how you described being on the hamster wheel but you’re actually a sloth that can’t run, that’s exactly how I feel it. I was on medication for a very long time, and people would always ask when I’d be coming off it, like it was some kind of temporary treatment. There’s still this stigma around depression where people seem to think it’s temporary. Like you go through a tough time and get depressed but then you recover. I’m sure that’s how it is for some people, but for me it will be a lifelong condition that I manage.
Meds for me never made me feel 100% normal or better, but they did lift me just enough to me to be able to start working to improve things. I am now off them, because mine had some pretty difficult side effects around weight gain and also drowsiness, but I was only able to stop successfully after 6 years of cognitive behavioural therapy. If I hadn’t been on the meds I wouldn’t have been able to do what was required of me in therapy to succeed. And that’s not to say I’ll never need them again, either.
There was a time in the middle of all of that where I went off them because I felt a lot of pressure from the whole “natural is better” crowd and I hate that that’s a thing. It really set me back a long way and ruined a good chunk of my early 20s. Which is why it’s so great to hear you talk so openly about meds in a positive way. Of course no one is out here promoting that everybody take medication, but if it’s the right choice for you then it’s the right choice and no one should be able to shame you for it.

Thank you I needed this today. I'm struggling because I have depression right now which would be like a walk in the park compared to the low functioning depression I experienced in the past. I've been struggling with actually calling it depression, seeking out help, and being gentle with myself because I can't stop thinking I'm just being sensitive and lazy.

Thank you for making this! I've also been on antidepressants for anxiety since my early 20s (and am also 30 now) and tried over the past week to go down a dose. I had already decided today that it's just not the time to "push through" and I'm going to go back to the dose I'm used to for a little bit, and seeing this video pop up was a nice validation.

Thank you for sharing this! I have had anxiety for as long as I can remember and have been on and off medication for it for years. I totally relate to stoping/wanting to stop taking medication and then coming back. It's a hard journey that we'll probably be on as long as we live!

This really resonated with me as I'm sure it will with a lot of your viewers. Thank you for using your platform to talk about this. It is so often not discussed and especially with "influencers". It can be so hard seeing people living what seems like a perfect life online So to have you, someone i've watched for 10 years and respect, talk about it is like a relief. Depression and anxiety is a bitch, but we don't have to deal with it totally alone.

I can't even begin to describe how much of a role model you are to me. I've watched you for years throughout high school and university. Your videos have always brought me a sense of peace, and I am so grateful for all your hard work to make as much content as you do.
I have really struggled with my mental health over the past few years and had to spend more time than I'd like to admit in psych hospitals and outpatient programs. So having someone who I really look up to talking about their experience with mental health and being on meds makes it feel so much more normal. It also allows me to feel like there's hope for my future (as corny as that sounds) because I can see someone who I admire so much who deals with mental illness and still has a fulfilling life. Thank you for talking about this, it means more than I think you even know! :)

Thank you for this video, Estee! I've dealt with anxiety for years, and aside from a college nurse prescribing me lorazepam a few years ago that I ended up never taking because it was right before final exams and I'd heard it could mess with my memory, I've never sought professional help. I do yoga almost every day, I eat a balanced diet, I have a regular sleep schedule, and those things do help but I still deal with thought spirals and health anxiety and often even hearing other people talk about anxiety makes me anxious. Things have gotten worse in a lot of ways since the pandemic, and your video inspired me to finally do something about it and make an appointment with my primary care doctor. Despite everything I know, I still felt uncomfortable telling the scheduling person the reason for my appointment, which is so crazy! I wouldn't feel that way if I was calling with flu symptoms or anything else! Not sure what next steps will be but thank you for sharing your experience and letting me and so many others know that it's okay to take medication xx

This is a really helpful video thanks. I’m currently pregnant so avoiding medication but it’s definitely been very hard and can’t wait to be a bit more balanced. I totally agree with the idea that I always used to assume everyone felt like this.

Thank you so much for this very open and raw video, Estée, I have enjoyed it greatly. You always give us food for thought and you are so wise ❤️

Knowing how much it helped you, eased my anxiety about starting an SSRI this week. Thank you for this great content!

  • @isadesusa4565
    @isadesusa4565 3 года назад

Estee thank you so much for talking about this! I take an SSRI now and it was one of your earlier vids (from years ago) that convinced me it might be okay to try.
So many important points highlighted here - the anxiety/depression exhaustion is so real. And the last thing anyone suffering needs is judgment from others when they opt for medication because they just need a break from their mind.
I've been on my SSRI for about 9 months now and you reminded me of what I was saying when I was first on it. I couldn't believe how much lighter my mind felt. 24/7 headache gone. And not waking up every day literally shaking and feeling nauseous changed my life.
It took four years of panic attacks, two rounds of therapy, and endless runs/meditations/yoga/naps to realise that I'd put in enough work by myself, and that it was okay if I opted for medication.. maybe I was one of the people that the medication is made for.
I think it's also important to highlight that it's entirely a personal decision to come off/stay on medication. It's no one's business whether you take medication for 6 more months or forever. Besides a qualified medical professional who you have consulted for a medical need, absolutely no one is entitled to pass judgment on what medication you take each day.
Last point is that I tried citalopram about 1 year ago and the side effects were nuts for me - after 3 days I had to stop it. I was immediately terrified of all antidepressants. But 3 months later I plucked up the courage to try again, called the GP and was prescribed sertraline. It was way easier to adjust to (minor, minor side effects in the beginning) and it has changed my life. So for anyone out there, reading this and thinking about trying medication, really don't get discouraged by the idea of trial/error to find the right one. It's not as big of a deal as it sounds and it's 500% worth the effort.

Thank you Estee for sharing your story. I also struggle with my mental health since I was very young. When I was 23 I decided to ask for help for the first time which was far too late. I hope with you sharing your story, others will find help sooner. Since the beginning I was against medication. Hearing you being so open and positive about it makes me want to look into it better. Thank you for being such an inspiration!

Thanks Estee for being so vulnerable and sharing your story! For those that have just started on antidepressants, they usually take about 6-8 weeks to fully 'work' and you may feel worse than before during this 6-8 weeks (its due to the mechanism of action of the antidepressant) so just like how Estee mentioned in the video, make sure family/loved ones are near to let you know if there are any mood changes because they will notice it earlier than you. If you are unable to push through, please see you pharmacist/doctor and do not stop the medication by yourself, as this may lead to unwanted side effects, the dose has to be slowly tapered down depending on how long you have been on it.

Bravo for tackling this subject with such poise as always. I have been on a similar medication for years and have sometimes considered coming off, but am afraid of the spiral I was in when I was finally diagnosed. I am so much more balanced now and not sure how I survived most of my life before. School years and young adulthood would have e definitely been so much easier. Thank you for sharing your story and I hope you stay on the meds this time. Life is better when your mental health is in check. ♥️
