I'm also 15 years vegan + 10 years vegetarian prior to that.
    1. The health benefits came from discovering various allergies and issues.
    2. The being cheerful part came from learning how to deal with life, nothing to do with veganism.
    3. Being non-aggressive... That's my entire life, I can certainly be angry at stuff though.
    4. I have nothing to miss prior to being vegan, that stuff ain't for me in any way.
Veganism affects everyone differently, and not allot of people actually stick to it, only those that it fits them.

Whenever I have a cheese and dairy period, which is usually around the big holidays, I get all bloated, soggy and tired and my skin breaks out. So I quickly go back to my colorful vegan meals that are so energizing and full of flavor. When I eat mostly plan based my body is flexible, light, full of energy and my skin is clear and bright. Loved your video. This is the first time I’ve seen you, I’ve missed too much of your life! I’ve been vegetarian since 1994, and vegan since the year 2000. There is a HUGE difference in what food is available now. Back when I started vegan, it was really only beans and tofu. As far as dating a non-vegan, I don’t base my attraction on another person on what they eat/don’t eat. I live with a pescatarian/chicken/turkey eater. Yes, it smells up my kitchen when he cooks these foods, and I insist all fish cooking is done on the grill outside. But he’s a fabulous, loving, caring man, that it’s a non-issue otherwise. I give him the food I cook from scratch, which he loves. He’s mentioned many times that he could easily go vegan, if I cooked like this every night. Some nights I just want a potato, so it’s not every day that I will make a big meal. I will make a soup and have that same soup for the rest of the week for my dinner. I also have a gentle, caring side to me, that probably didn’t happen until much later in my vegan life. I also can’t imagine ever eating meat, or why I even liked it back in my youth. If I have a social function to attend, I will eat my own food beforehand, because I’d rather just be around interesting people, than worry about what I’m going to eat. If it’s only a few hours, I can do without the food anyway.

In my life I was raised meat-eating, went vegan for about 6-7 years, and recently switched back to meat-eating/omnivore.
Switching back and forth made me realize what a difference it makes in your heart, but I don't know how to say it because it sounds too sentimental- you're right though, it gets you in touch with the gentle side of yourself. I was a kinder and gentler person when I was vegan, to people as well as animals. The difference in my own psychology and behavior is noticeable and shocking (even though right now I eat very little meat/animal products, and when I do it's all pasture raised/ humanely grown, blah blah blah. The difference between that and vegan is still huge.)
I like that you talked about that, it's one of the biggest reasons I think I'm going to go back to it. I feel like I might be betraying a part of myself and others in the world by choosing the less gentle way. Our thoughts and values influence our actions, but our actions also influence our values and our thoughts.

    • @AuthorThings

Idk your reasons for going back to Omni... Buuuuuut, you can always view it as more of a spectrum. Been vegan 5.5 years now but I have had dairy or eggs a few times due to extenuating circumstances where it just wasn't possible not to unless I starved myself... So, if you wanted, you could go vegetarian and view it as a spectrum... It doesn't have to be all or nothing. It'd be better for the animals if everyone drastically cut down rather than a few people cutting it out all together... If it's some sort of deficiency that was created, by all means, please take care of yourself. If it's just a convenience thing... Please consider keeping some stuff prepped and in the fridge ready for later.

I love this video. I was vegan for three years but my diet was altered by food restrictions due to an autoimmune disease. I still believe in my heart that it is the healthiest way to be and still eat plant-based a lot but am not exclusively so. It's complicated and I won't bore you with it, but just know that your message is warmly received. And I want to thank you for the light-bulb moment I had when you talked about simplifying your diet so that your meal planning / buying / prep is a no-brainer. Yesterday it took me forever to plan out the next couple days of meals, and it all felt so absurd. Thanks to you, I am putting together a list of our favorite healthy easy meals we can eat on repeat so that I can stop this madness!
I am super excited to order your book. I remember a while back when you shared a small writing sample for us to read, and it really stayed with me. It's not easy to be memorable in such a heavily saturated book market. You clearly have a gift, and I can't wait to read more of your work!

I've been a vegetarian since I was 14 and I remember the sorts of questions I used to get but now I know TONS of vegans and vegetarians and it's just so nice not to be alone anymore! I'm also a foster parent and our kid is lactose-intolerant - no problem when you already buy plant-based milks ;). It IS a bit odd raising a child who eats meat while I don't but I've never even been remotely tempted to eat anything he's having. I also agree with the decision fatigue, it's just so much easier to make decisions when you have a rule that lines up with your ethics.

Fellow vegan here, this is such an interesting video, I love it!! 😍
In my case, after going vegan I started to become REALLY interested in wildlife and animal welfare so that I decided to sort of start a whole new path in life. Even though I had already finished uni, I started studying biology and researching alternatives to animal testing ... and I'm now living together with a bunch of former lab rats because I try to help getting them out of the labs as often as I can. 😂 5 years ago I thought I'd spend my life working abroad as a translator, living in big cities and travelling all the time - now I'm doing the opposite and couldn't be any happier. 😅

The point about dating a non-vegan is so true! I turned vegan midway through my 6 year relationship and to this day it is the thing we argue about the most. Him being a dedicated meat eater and me cooking only vegan, I find myself hoping every day that he would stop eating meat - or at least in our home. But I know that it’s not fair to him either to push my food choices onto him.
Should we ever break up I’m 100% going for a fellow plant eater😅.

I would’ve liked to stick to being vegan but it made me very unwell. I have iron deficiency already and celiac disease, being vegan made me seriously anaemic and worsened gut issues. A lot of vegan foods, beans, lentils, pulses, veggies are hard to digest and I can’t tolerate iron pills. It’s best for me to eat meat but I’m glad I tried being vegan, apart from the negative health effects I found it quite easy to give up foods. The hardest part was the social aspect and feeling very aware of harm to animals that is happening and people not caring was mentally draining.

It’s not possible for me until I can cure whatever is causing the iron deficiency I guess. I eat very balanced and take multivitamin and iron pills but it doesn’t help. The only thing I can do is try to eat the best iron possible which is meat. I’m not going to suffer even more everyday and make myself more ill just to be vegan. I can’t even have eggs instead of meat cause I have egg intolerance also😂

Then I learned that 7.3 billion animals are killed every year in US plant agriculture alone. Squirrels, gophers, mice, snails, rabbits, deer, crickets, lady bugs, frogs,..and realized that all food has a biological consequence. So I am going to choose the foods that support my personal health and do my best to support regenerative agricultural practices for plants and animals. 💜

I was vegan when I started watching Jenny, and through 5 years of feeding a 3 person household, 2 of which were picky and non-vegan, I became tired of cooking 2 meals. Now I've ve been omnivorous for 2 years. However, I enjoy eating 1-2 plant based meals a day. I like knowing where my animal products come from that I do eat, so I buy free range/grass fed/wild caught whenever possible. It's important to know where our food comes from and support those in agriculture who are producing ethically.
I believe everyone needs more plants in their diet, from a health and ethical standpoint.

I have thought about being vegan often, as I eat loads of vegan options. The only reason why I haven't fully, is because the rest of my family I cook for are not vegan and it is sometimes tough to make meals for us all when they like meat (I do give them tofu and impossible meat/beyond meat once in a while and they are fine with it), but the main issue, is that one of my sons is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, and a lot of recipes include those (or have cheese made from cashews and such). I am mainly vegetarian with some pescatarian options regardless. I see a nutritionist because I am anemic and have high cholesterol from genetics (but live a very healthy lifestyle and really based off of that shouldn't have it high at all, but I do). My nutritionist has seen how adding fish has helped me a lot more than just the veggies and iron pills, etc. I have learned to balance it. I was vegetarian for two years and it actually caused me some health issues which is why I had to change it up a little. Anyway, I have never made congee and you have inspired me to try!
I have not had beef in 8 years and not had pork in 16.
Chicken, That one I have had here and there as well but only because I am pregnant and was told to add it. I will be off it again and was off of it for about 6 years.
