Why I Don't Shoot "Drills"

- Typical shooting drills can be fun, no doubt. But are they really preparing you for winning a lethal force encounter? I don't think so. That's why I developed my own set of defensive shooting practices long ago.
#shootingdrills
Finally someone with "real world" experience and understanding to place shooting drills in the proper perspective. When involved in real life defensive handgun combat, instincts and gross motor skills take over. For one thing, you will "square up" to your threat, feet shoulder with apart and facing the bad guy, not bladed or whatever. Secondly trigger control is reduced to hard presses or jerking. I find double tap "drills" being the most valuable as well as the number of shot is determined as the fight ensues. Good job and a breath of fresh air, thank you sir!
One of the few tubers who get it about practice. If you are a beginner, practicing static drills at the stalls will help you in recoil management, aiming, trigger pull, site picture, etc..However, once you progress find a range that offers COF’s forward of the line. Look for CQE live fire and SIM, shooting while moving, moving targets, barricades. Example - CQE is most likely your main reality if having to defend yourself. At 3, 4 or 5 yards there will be no time to aim and the shot will happen at hip, compressed ready or while extending out at a target life size going for groin, chest box and head. Practicing that may save your life.
@Toddm,
Perfectly stated. That's exactly how the progression should be done 👍
What does COF and CQE stand for?
Antonius says at 9:10 "Don't let your range rules get you killed in the streets" #facts ... Thank you for reminding us about the importance of the length of time of the first shot ... Its so hard to find a range where I can draw and use a timer .. but if there is a will there is a way ... My CCW requires shooting at various yards including 10 yards ... I'm practicing at 12 yards with a super small target so that when I use the B-27 target I will enhance my chance of increased points ... Thanks for sharing ...
@Golden Gate
It sounds like you're doing everything right, given the range restrictions. You're very wise to use those reduced size targets right now, it may pay off one day for you 👌
"Keep it simple " no words have stated so much, gotta agree with your assessment SS, while it is essential that bullseye, rapid magazine change and thumbs forward seems to be vital for competitive shooting it is of little value in defense shooting and perhaps some of those RUclips channels should state that!
@spaceman063
Very good point, my friend. Not to cast other channels in a bad light, but most channels are more concerned with "viewer count". View count can determine if sponsors or advertisers will pay you to advertise for them, or they will "sponsor" (pay for) a video. It's about making money. To get high view counts, channels throw in "tacti-cool" or flashy, fancy type content, no matter if it's teaching anything correctly or useful. I have no sponsors, I make no income from my videos, so I don't have to do "tacti-cool" stuff. I have low view count, but my content is solid, so I'm happy.
@@shootinitstraight4162 well I was lucky to find your channel because after being verbally abused because of my "dinosaur " technique of thumbs down instead of tac cool thumbs forward and not buying the latest and must have tactical gear to modify my glock (skeleton firing pin, new springs etc.) It is a damn welcoming feeling to know that others out there teach with common sense and candor!

You have wisely discovered that "popularity" doesn't always equate to BETTER 👍
My "Drills" .. Are On Man Type Targets...
Including Multiple Moving Targets... And, Moving While Shooting.
. Battle Accuracy ..
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE...

Agreed 👌
I can definitely see how some drills & certain competition methods can lead to the shooter… drilling bad muscle memory/training scars in their head. Especially if they're only practicing 7 yards away from the target(s) in a static, standing position.
@allahilah
Bro, my notifications aren't working right, sorry. But yes, you're exactly right. However, I can see practical application in *some* drills that are taught, and I'm not trying to discourage all shooting drills. This is only how I personally feel about most of them. 👍
Question: So shooting at a index card on the range isn't beneficial but shooting at a reduced size silhouette is? Isn't an index card a smaller reference point just like a smaller silhouette?
@Keyboard Warrior
Which do you think would take more time to hit accurately? Index cards are great if you want sub 2" groups. You don't need to be that accurate in defensive shooting. The reduced size silhouette is still much larger than the index card, yet can yield good thoracic shots on a full size target.
@@shootinitstraight4162 I now see your point🤔
Incredible...almost everything I've heard here is wrong.
@Karl
Yes, I suppose I could benefit from watching YOUR videos on the topic. Oh wait.....
@@shootinitstraight4162 I don't claim to know what I'm talking about on the internet. But i know how much Flak you're getting from trusted people who both have been in combat and shot competition
@@sjambok1
Thank you, I appreciate what you're saying. I'm not worried about taking flak, because I have survived a deadly shooting event myself back in my early Law Enforcement days, and I have shot in CPSL and IDPA matches for several years. Somehow I managed to survive a shooting and maintain in "B" class in the matches without practicing any of the typical shooting drills. So I suppose it really just comes down to individual perspective. And as I stated in the video, I don't necessarily discourage any practice drills, I only state that I personally don't shoot them. Thanks for watching the video, brother 👍
@@sjambok1 I do believe that Shootinitstreight is pointing out that has been in an life or death situation during his years in law enforcement not competitive shooting and looking at it from that perspective, I really don't believe that his intentions in this video was to insult competitive shooters or those who have been in dangerous situations!
In what way is he wrong!?
I think you hit the nail on the head here, never been one to give in to all these newer shooting methods, drills, etc, etc. As I told you on another vid, I couldn't even get the " Competition Grip" to work for me, so all of this new fangled techniques are out the door in my book. Thx for the vid Antonius
