  • A short video on the basics of mixing epoxy resins.
    Key points:
    Glove up and keep wet epoxy resin off of you. Wear appropriate PPE as your situation dictates, this could include tyvek suits, face shields, googles, etc. Uncured epoxy is a skin sensitizer and irritant.
    Use the correct ratio, ratios will vary depending on epoxy type and formulation. The weight and volume ratios are often different so make sure you are using the correct ratio for the system and measuring method you are using.
    Mix thoroughly scraping the sides and bottom of the container to get everything mixed correctly and completely. Mix for at least 2 minutes.

    great video thanks so much! looking forward to your next videos :) Quick question: in terms of staining wood before applying epoxy. What type of staining mix would you use, to make sure the epoxy penetrates the wood and ultimately protects its from water? Big thanks

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад

      By staining do you mean a pre-coat of epoxy to saturate the wood and seal it? Personally I don't usually pre-seal the wood unless it is a really porous piece or species. Some people do and if I were going to do that I would either use a lower viscosity epoxy like the Contemporary Composite Technologies Epoxy or System Three Clear Coat (both which we sell). Even a higher viscosity epoxy works well if you put a little heat to it or to the wood and use a slow hardener to give it time in its liquid state to soak in. The folks at WEST system did an excellent article on epoxy penetration into wood that can be found here: www.epoxyworks.com/index.php/penetrating-epoxy-legend-myth/

  • @Undefined9

    Every epoxy brand is different and, for beginners, low viscosity is definitely recommended because high viscosity versions are a gigantic pain in the ass to mix, remove air bubbles and its super easy to end up with a cloudy mess if you don't combine both parts JUST RIGHT.

    now i am confused, I have read on different epoxy containers and online that the ratios for weight and volume are slightly different, yet i see most surfboard builders using epoxy by weight and a ratio of 2:1, are there epoxy systems that use the same ratio weather mixing by weight or volume? thanks

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад +1

      The density of the resin and the hardener are different hence the difference in ratios when measuring by weight rather than volume. That said the actual acceptable mix ratio is often a range, not a fixed number and while a 2:1 by weight (100:50) might not be the stated mix ratio (it is usually 100:44 for most 2:1 by volume systems) it may fall into the acceptable range for a given system. How do you find out the range? Some data sheets will give it to you like ProSet www.prosetepoxy.com/wp-content/uploads/ACE-166_ACE-265.pdf (which the 2 ratios do not overlap) or you may need to contact the epoxy manufacturer. Also even though the epoxy mix may be slightly out of ratio it may still cure, although it will not reach its full physical properties.

      for a mold surface or a mixing container? We have used metal muffin pans for molds, we coat it with a release agent to get an easy release. Some plastic containers also work. The problem that you will run into with a mixing container is that it is pretty common for there to be spots on the surface of the container that did not mix and will be sticky or not fully cured.

      It will start to cure as soon as you mix the resin and hardener so can’t really be reused.. I would get in the habit of measuring out how much you will need to use for your project before mixing it. There’s calculators online for this or just eyeball it. If you mix too little for your project, you can always mix more if you work quick enough!

    Is it a must to use a hardener to use epoxy?

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  4 года назад +1

      Generally speaking since I do not know what system you are using and because your question indicates there may be some confusion to whether you are using an epoxy system or a polyester system, many epoxies will bond well to raw concrete and result in a bond that when it fails is due to substrate failure (the concrete fails). Polyester or vinylester systems require a tie coat or primer like AT Prime II. Again generally speaking most epoxy systems are a 2 part system that requires a hardener.

      Generally we dispose of the container. If mixing by weight it is possible to reuse the container. Also if using a pump or metering system it may be possible to reuse the container. Unwaxed paper buckets work the best for reusing as the resin bonds to it and won’t flake off.

    Once the two part epoxy is poured, how much time do you have to mix it?

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  Год назад

      Do you mean once the two components are poured together how much time do you have to mix it? It depends on the specific system and temperatures but for most systems at room temperature you should have plenty of time to mix it (we recommend mixing for 2 minutes) and usually 15-20 to get it out of the mixing cup and onto the project. Again those are general guidelines - specific epoxy systems can vary to much shorter and longer times so consult the data sheet for your epoxy or contact us via phone or email.

    What's the difference between epoxy hardener-hard and epoxy hardener-soft?

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  3 года назад +1

      I am not familiar with an epoxy hardener-hard or -soft, I assume that you are referring to -fast or -slow. The chemistry of the hardener determines the speed at which it cures for a given temperature. For an epoxy resin (a side) there are usually a number of hardener speed options like fast, medium, slow, extra-slow, or tropical for each manufacturer those can vary in what they offer and what the actual speed is in minutes. Again keep in mind that the speed that the resin gels and cures is dependent on the hardener speed AND temperature, the hotter it is the faster it will gel/cure and the colder it is the slower it will gel or cure. Most data sheets give gel data at 25C for every 10 C you go higher the time will be half that and for every 10C colder double. Gel data is usually given for 100 to 150 gram mass, thin film times will be longer.

After pouring the second mixture, which is only about 5 minutes later, I realised the plastic bottle mold got heated up in a few minutes and deformed the mold.
    Without pigment: Previously i had done it in one go and without adding any pigment, and it went perfect.
    What could be the reason for the extreme heat that deformed the plastic bottle mold and the resin expansion? Kindly help me mitigate the problem 🙏

      🤔🤐

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад +2

      To troubleshoot a problem like this we want to look at:
      Mold temperature the previous times and this time.
      Volume of resin mixed this time vs the previous times.
      Verify that we are using the same speed hardener as previously.
      Resin and ambient temperatures from both times.
      Were any exotherm mitigation techniques used either time.
      Time from mixing to pouring in mold.
      Resin is going to create heat as it cures this is called exotherm. The larger the mass of resin, i.e. the thicker the pour or resin volume is, the faster and hotter it will get.
      It is unlikely that the pigment itself caused the issue, but could be that if you mixed the resin and then let it sit while you opened the pigment or searched for something (I've done that before), that the resin in the mixing bucket was already starting to get hot and react faster causing a train wreck when you poured it into them mold.
      Basically you have a number of options to lower exotherm, reduce the sectional thickness of the part, work in cooler conditions, use a slower hardener, or use a method to cool the mold while the resin cures, are some of the options available. You can use a combination of those methods to prevent the exotherm from getting too hot.

There are are other systems that use different ratios, like 3:1 and 5:1 so double check the mixing instructions on the specific system you are using.

    Sorry if I sound stupid(it may be the case, though)but...you said thar by quantity(volume) it is one-two. In weight is 100% 40%? I can't make it cures very well. It is(almost)always some "honey like" residues when the whole is hardened. And it takes at least 2 days depending on the size to solidify.
    Thanks for de vid, was useful!

      What specific resin system are you using? Are you mixing well? Is the residue waxy like in appearance and on the surface? If so it is most likely amine blush, which generally can be washed off with water and a scotchbrite pad, it is a byproduct of the amines in the hardener reacting with CO2 and water in the air.

    Question: is it sticky stuff? In other words, will it bond well if poured onto a painted surface? When it goes off will it detach from a painted surface?

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад

      That is a good question but one that is really hard to answer due to type of paint, condition of paint, and any other surface contaminates. Even if it does stick to the paint the next question is how good of a bonding layer is the paint to the substrate? If I was wanting to go over a painted surface I would run some tests to see how well it does. In surfboard building we do often go over painted foam with epoxy, but that is a textured surface so we have some mechanical bonding also taking place in that situation.

      What brand and system number is it and what speed hardener? First thing is to double check your temperature and the cure times given on the data sheet for the resin against how long it has been since you mixed it. It may just need more time to cure. If that is not the case mix up a small test batch around 100-150 cc and see if that hardens up, be careful to measure the batch precisely and to mix it thoroughly. If that doesn’t set properly you may have an issue with your resin system if it sets properly there was an issue with measuring/mixing the first batch. Also you need to verify whether the ratio is by volume or by weight, as densities of the epoxy and hardener are often different the mix ratio by weight will be different than the mix ratio by volume.

    My epoxy mix got milky-cloudy when cured... Did some research, turns out it's the moisture in the air that may contribute...

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  Год назад

      Yes that could be. Amines in the hardener react with moisture in the air to create amine blush which can manifest as a milky white especially when wet or very humid. This can be a problem if you let the mixed resin get wet while it cured or had very high humidity.

      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад

      Our experience has been that the most important two things for getting a proper mix are to be on ratio and to mix thoroughly scraping the sides and the bottom. We have not found there to be any difference whether the hardener or epoxy goes in first.

  • @Thedog30

    So the answer is two parts resin to one part hardener

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад

      Depends on the system, in this case it is a 2:1 system. Check the data sheet for your resin or container for mix ratios. 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 5:1 are all common epoxy mix ratios, but the ratio will be specific to the formulation you are using. If you purchased your epoxy from us feel free to contact us directly and we'll help you out.

    As much as i read resin is chemically dangerous so we should wear the right mask while mixing. Seing from what you're doing is not wearing a mask. Do you not get any harm to your health ?

      Generally speaking epoxy systems have low voc content and can be worked with in liquid form in open and well ventilated spaces safely. In confined spaces safety precautions should be taken. You should always check the specific safety data sheet for the product that you are using. West System has a great page on epoxy safety here: www.westsystem.com/safety/

    Far from perfect. Thumb down. Not done homework for making multiple reuse of containers and how to mix small quantities. I personally believe a silicone stick from kitchen is better then wooden stick because it will mix better to the edges of a container and epoxy doesn't bond to a silicone, so in theory you can reuse that mixing stick many times. I'm looking for a small silicone reusable containers for the same reason. Not sure if they're easy to use, but I hope.
