    Is it okay to skip the surface agent and just paint directly onto the tacky surface? I’m building a teardrop trailer and plan on painting with a bed liner. Could that go directly onto the polyester resin?

    hello.
    When our latex mold was dry and we wanted to make a fiberglass mother mold, what material should we use so that the fiberglass mother mold does not stick to the latex mold?

    Thanks for this video. Please what is the mixing ratio between the vinylester resin and catalyst

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  Год назад

      Typically 1.5 to 2.5%, but depends on the specific vinylester you are using and temperature you are working in.

  • @esaleh9250

    This might be a silly question, but can you dilute the catalyst? Essentially we need the ratio of resin to catalyst to be like 10:1, could that be possible with polyester resin or it's fundemantly not possible?

    I have lots of experience with epoxy building large RC jets but non at all with Polyester. I'm making the switch to poly cause the price of epoxy is just nuts now. Please tell me how you would join two parts that are made of poly. Its my understanding that poly wont stick to poly. Also when should you use Waxed and Not waxed? If I make a mold out of Blue foam, what should I use for tooling coat that wont melt the foam.
    Thanks so much

      Epoxy is better

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  Год назад

      Epoxy and MMA (methyl methacrylate i.e. plexus) adhesives are two options. Without getting in the weeds too far, poly will stick to poly but timing, joint type, and surface prep are all important. I get that epoxy is expensive but I'm not sure I would switch on high performance parts like RC jets.

    Is it safe to do polyester fiberglassing without a respiator?

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад

      That really depends. Styrene, which is the chemical you smell in polyester resin is heavier than air, some shops have the airflow designed to move the down and away from the laminator and may not wear respirators. We do recommend you wear a respirator, I usually don't in a video like this so that the audio is better.

    Hi How long does it take to gel or hardened. ? Often i find some polyester takes overnight to cure ( i did it this alvo at 6 pm and it was probaly 16 degrees celcius) and it hasnt hardened and its 9 pm . Thankyou

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  Год назад

      Depends on the resin system, temperature, and catalyst amount, but generally it will gel in 20-45 minutes and should be hard within a few hours. It may remain tacky to the touch for some time unless it has wax in it and that is normal to allow bonding subsequent layers without sanding. It does sound like you have some issues, which could be bad resin (it will go bad over time), insufficient catalyst added or not mixed properly, or the catalyst has gone bad (that happens too).

    So if I wanna mix 4 ounces of resin how much hardener do I add?

    • @jimbailey9257
      @jimbailey9257 10 месяцев назад +1

      For every four ounces of resin, how much hardener do I need? I want it by teaspoon, or 1/4 teaspoon. So simple, but no answers.

    1 or 2 % of weight or volume? or is that depending on the resin system?

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 года назад

      Because they are so close in specific gravity you can go with either, we usually use volume. This applies to polyester resin, for epoxy the ratios between weight and volume are different because the specific gravity between the resin and the hardener are different.

  • @kisoia

    Thanks for the video. I was taught to add catalyst based on weight, not volume. Is adding catalyst by volume recommended by resin manufacturers?

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  3 года назад +2

      Interesting question. I have seen both weight and volume used on resin manufacturers data sheets, general practice is to mix by volume. The difference between the two is negligible and because with polyester resins you can vary the amount of catalyst you add this small difference should have no adverse effects on the performance of the resin. Just to be clear we are talking about polyester resin systems, not epoxy, epoxy is a completely different chemistry.
