I was hiking at Clingmans Dome and a fellow hiker stopped me and showed me how to use my hiking poles properly. I really appreciated him taking the time out of his hike to do that. That was over 10 years ago and I still appreciate him doing that.
Trekking poles are more complicated than they seem for newcomers. Before we went to Colorado for some hiking, me and my son practiced using them at the local park, doing the grip like you say, adjusting the height, trying some half gloves with them (cause they can wear out the skin on your hands), going up and down hills, etc. People were looking at us like we were idiots but it really helped later in Colorado.
All of your tips were new to me. I have never heard about the o-ring before, trekking pole was new, don't go to town on Mondays and Tuesday. The only one I had heard was that getting out of Maine was a pain. Thanks for the info on where to fly out of.
When I used that filter I carried some garden hose o-rings for when the original failed or disappeared. Very handy to have. Also I gave up on wrist straps a long time ago after I had a bad fall where my wrist caught in the strap. Yanked my shoulder and I fell onto a boulder, hurting a rib. So now I remove my straps and replace them with a string loop so I can hang them up if I want to.
There are some good videos about how to use the trekking pole. You basically explained it. All weight on the strap and don't "grip" the pole. =) I think one of the ideas behind it is also that you don't want to "exert" yourself and want to relax because any grip will just tire you out too. Kind of leaning into/putting weight on the strap lets you relax while still being able to "catch" yourself on that strap if you are about to fall. It's not obvious without being told but once someone shows you it's easy to do. =) Oh when I got my first pole I didn't know how to use it (it was a folding set) and it kept coming apart while walking. Eventually realized how to "click" it in place. xD
Great video and probably to things new hikers don't think about. I think the Arizona Trail could be a good one if you pick time away from hot weather. That one is about 600 miles. Good luck on your next adventure.
It's so good to continue to hear from you and get tips and insight, I've haven't heard from honey bee for months love your back drop go luck on your next adventure
The AT lodge in Millinocket picks up at the Ranger Station in Baxter. The then daily shuttle to the bus station where you can catch the bus to Bangor. We caught an Uber in Bangor to the hotel and hotel shuttle to the airport the next morning.
Great video tips. I learnt that about the seal through household taps believe it or not and some geocaching containers lol. Great tips for the hiking poles, I have been surprised at just how many people have not been taught how to use treking poles, when used correctly they are a great extension of your body. I have seen one out that broke his thumb in a fall by holding with the strap the wrong way. You are coming up with great content and looking forward to your upcoming hikes. Hope you can take us along :)
Great advice for proper use of the trekking pole strap. Makes a huge difference! I also use a pair of fingerless gloves (like a glove for weight lifting) for a bit more cushion on the hands, too.
Great information! Thank you for sharing especially regarding closure of businesses on Monday and Tuesday. Very helpful indeed. I look forward to your upcoming hikes. - Jiffy Pop
Great tips👍 Not only only will over tightening damage the O ring but I’ve had the base of the filter body crack as well! 😮 Tried taping it together to no use 😢… The filter was then totally 100% useless…
I am still so amazed that you had no prior backing experience! You handled it like a pro and you did it girl!!! Looking forward to see your future hiking adventures! Sounds like you have some fun stuff planned to look forward to! 😊
A lot of restaurants are closed on Monday because they are open all weekend. Am looking forward to your future hikes. Thanks for being willing to share them with us. Christmas wishes to you and your family. Hope you'll have a bit of time off during the holidays. Stay safe.
Good tips! I wonder if that's the reason my Sawyer squeeze always leaks. I gave up Sawyers because of the constant leaking and moved on to the Katadyn Befree, but maybe I should just get a new o-ring and give Sawyer another shot
Good tips. So you're planning a PCT hike in the future? Great! The most recent PCT/AT hiker I see putting out good comparisons between his expectations of the PCT and comparisons to the AT is Kyle Hates Hiking, he comes closest to describing the PCT that I know living here. You might save some time watching a ciouple of his after-hike videos on what he would do differently. I'll look forward to seeing you on the PCT somewhere in northern Oregon.
@@hikingdancer Kyle has good information and a goofy attitude I enjoy. I got to talk with Kyle and Jupiter at PCT Days, they seem like opposites, but both introspective and thoughtful in their approach. Jupiter's PCT videos just started coming out.
Hi Juliane, how you doin’ Plummers use Teflon tape to wrap around the threads of pipes before they’re tightened. It could be wrapped around the Smart bottle threads before it’s tightened in the Sawyer.(just a thought) Could you hang some lights from the bridge for Christmas?😬
Juliane disregard that tip about the Teflon tape. I looked into it and Teflon tape is meant for metal pipe threads and is not to be used on plastic threads. I was just trying to think of a way to give a better water tight fitting without tightening down on the Sawyer to much.
You are looking healthy, must be eating nutritious food since you're off trail. Glad you have some hikes planned and you are keeping your channel going!
Some good advice here… but I never understood why people hike over 2400 miles but then can’t make their way to an airport or train station by walking a bit more. The AT, and all these trails with names, are just man made arbitrary starting and stopping points so that people who believe the make-believe can keep score. There’s no beginning or end to planet earth. Walk as much as you want. So that said, people should just plan ahead on where to walk so they can get home. It’s just part of the trail. Good for you to point out the difficulty at the “end”, but there is no end.

Yeah I had absolutely no idea how to use poles

So far I’m still liking the wrist straps. Once I stopped tightening my filter that much I didn’t have to replace another o ring

That was such very good information for new hikers! I remember struggling with a couple of them when I first started hiking.
I’m happy you like it
Can't wait to hear where you are going next! 🙂
Im happy to share soon
Wow! How informative! Keep the videos coming. They’re much appreciated!
Thank you

Oh nice
Thank you for these tidbits! It's the little things like picking town days that I haven't thought about.
Yeah I never heard about this until I experienced it
Great information! Thank you for sharing especially regarding closure of businesses on Monday and Tuesday. Very helpful indeed.

Thank you Jiffy Pop. It definitely was a bit annoying when the stores were closed and we were hungry 😜

Great information thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
You are the first person to advise about avoiding town days on Monday & Tuesday. 👍
🥾🥾🥾
Really? Good thing then
Happy Holidays and a Healthy New Year. Good Luck, Rick
Same to you
Great video done by Bigfoot a few years ago covers transportation options post hike after Khatadin. Look up Follow Bigfoot and Baxter State Park.
Gonna check it out
All helpful, thanx!
Glad it was helpful!
If you replace o ring with one from a water hose (soft plastic is better) the filter won't leak and the o ring will stay in filter.

Looking forward to you back on a trail...As always good to see you...😊😊
Thank you

I’m excited for the upcoming hikes
Look forward to and enjoy your videos! PS: You are beautiful and don't need any makeup!! BEEP BEEP!

... Nice to see you in good spirits .... This is called learning ,, so now you are an experienced through hiker of the AT ....
Feels strange to be the one with knowledge
Great information, as always. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
Thank you chickpea
Great to see you! You would know about the Monday Tuesday stuff because, after all, your tramily was the zero heroes😂😂🤣
Exactly
Well done HD, be well and keep up the great work.

Makes total sense about restaurants, but as a hungry hiker it’s the saddest day.
This is all super helpful. Thank you!
Yay. Glad it helps

That could very well be the reason for leaking.
Some of the smaller Mom and Pop restaurants here in Florida are closed on Monday also. It's their slowest day and it gives the owners a day off.
Makes sense
Are you gonna try the Katadyn "Be Free" filter, instead of your Sawyer Squeeze, on your January hike?
I think I might
Hi Roadrunner! Will you be posting your live session from today, Sunday the 18th? I missed most of it and I’d like to watch it all.
Thanks,

I’m sorry Jimmy, I didnt plan to keep it public.

I wonder if spitting on the o-ring might allow you to tighten it without breaking it.
Mhhh it’s a thought
Aahhh. Someone said Honey Bee 🐝 That would be a good trail name. Would be very interested to know where you’re hiking in May
I’ll talk about it soon
The other comment was referring to another 2022 NOBO vlogger whose trail name is Honey Bee: www.youtube.com/@Maybe_Jessie
