In January 2010, I decided I would quit tobacco. That being said, I would need to quit alcohol as well because it triggered my tobacco use. I didn't acknowledge my dependency on alcohol at the time as I was trying to solve the nicotine issue.
Alcohol is ingrained in what we do socially and is a hard habit to break. Drinking is a social activity that includes going to bars and restaurants, hanging out with friends, watching sports, listening to live music, and more. Alcohol occupies time, brings us together, and is relied on so heavily. Even if you're not drinking every night, when you go out on the weekends, much socializing revolves around alcohol.
After quitting in 2010, I had no alcohol for six months. I felt like I had control over my drinking, so I would still enjoy a glass of wine or bourbon once or twice a week. I was not getting drunk. But when the world shut down in 2020, my alcohol use ramped up. My wife and I would open a bottle of wine during the week, and my consumption started to escalate to the point where I felt like I was going in the wrong direction. I wasn't feeling as good as I used to and felt stagnant like my brain wasn't working right. I wasn't as happy.
I started to unpack what was different about me and why. I had a hard look in the mirror, realized that I was drinking too much, and thought of all the benefits I experienced when I quit drinking in 2010. I needed to stop and get out of my own way to change. I needed to accept the responsibility that I was doing something self-destructive.
Alcohol is like giving up a toxic friend. I used to drink because I felt like it would let me truly be me, and I would let my guard down. Ultimately, I realized I was a horrible drunk, and nobody wanted to be around me. I would do and say things that weren't necessarily consistent with who I felt I was or wanted to be. So, 30 days ago, I decided to quit and change things. It really impacted my life positively. I encourage every one of you to give up alcohol for the next 30 days. Even if you don't have a problem.
The starting point is the most significant difference between quitting in 2010 and now. I was a mess in 2010, getting blackout drunk and being very unhappy. My life back then was a disaster that I didn't realize. When I stopped making those bad decisions and drinking, I was more productive and made more money. I was better focused and had better relationships.
Over the last 30 days, my self-esteem has been better because I'm not beating myself up when I wake up after drinking. I don't have cobwebs in my head from drinking on the weekend. My mentality is clearer, and my emotions are more level because there are no more ups and downs from the alcohol's vicious cycles. I'm also more thankful and more grounded. Not drinking allowed me to step back, breathe deeply, and center myself. I've been a lot more aware of my surroundings and relationships.
Not drinking has allowed me to be thankful rather than constantly thinking about where I want to get or where I want to be. I didn't expect that. We are living in a crazy time where everybody is trying to be better and acquire more. Everyone constantly tries to fix what they perceive as broken or deficient, preventing them from truly embracing themselves. Sure, we should all strive to be better or achieve more, but not consuming alcohol allows you to be more present in your daily life and have a clearer mentality of who you are.
When you're continually masking how you feel with alcohol, you are prevented from honestly dealing with issues that have built up. I know I've talked about therapy a gazillion times, but when you quit drinking, it's an awakening. Your eyes are open, and you see life and the world differently. Many people utilize alcohol as a crutch to numb the pain and not deal with things. But we must deal with our issues to be truly happy and not continuously go through a vicious cycle.

I just randomly stopped drinking as I was having 2-3 beers couple days a week soon as I got home to mentally relax and then go catch up with my kids and wife. Started to feel like I had to do this after having a rough day at work to be more relaxed around everyone when I first stepped in the house. Started to become like everyday was a rough day and I was doing this regularly. Been two weeks so far and feel good about moving ahead without it.

Social and commercial pressures keep us at the bars. If you can figure out that drinking is a waste of time, money and detrimental to your health, you are on your way to stopping for good. Just stick to your own personal path and LEAVE DRINKING BEHIND!

After years of heavy drinking (I'm a 44 year old professional musician who's been in the industry for over 25 years), I completely stopped my consumption of alcohol a year ago and been hitting the gym since, putting on more muscle than I've ever had, and feel absolutely great. I still drink beer, but it's always non alcoholic beer simply because I love the taste and it feels good here in TX heat. Alcohol has resulted in very bad decisions over the years, fights, embarrassment, etc. I don't regret my life, but if I had the chance to be young again, I'd never touch alcohol. Glad to hear you are good 🤘🏼

I went from producing 1 track a month to like 5 per weekend. Mental clarity was at an all time high, I was getting quality sleep, like actually dreaming. Conversations when around people were more genuine and meaningful… then my 11 year relationship ended and I started to drown it all with alcohol.
Time to remove it from my life again. If I need to have alcohol to have a good time or enjoy things, maybe it’s not that great to begin with. Heads up kings! Let’s go!

I would’ve never imagined the life and change removing one substance from my life could have. Learned more about myself in 3 years than I had in the prior 7 years of drinking. Since then, I managed to build 2 successful businesses, have never had stronger relationships, friendships, and respect. I always cleaned up well on the outside though, and not many people would or could ever tell, so thank you for speaking up about it, really nice to see a big influencer talk about a seemingly difficult conversation, but really positive change that most everyone should experience at least once. I was self-medicating due to the fact I hated my life, but I didn't know where to start. It was way easier to just drink than to look in the mirror and be real with myself. It's not easy guys, but it is realistic/doable. You don't need to quit right away, sometimes you just need to take baby steps. Eventually you start having a clearer and sound mind where you're much more in tune with your soul and mind.

I can tell you a lot about how to get rid of an addiction. I deal with it daily with my clients. You mentioned the triggers that "you created". If you quit but don't remove the triggers the habit will most likely return. Learning how to reassign those triggers to mean something totally different is the key to solving the problem for good.

I went thru the same thing. I am 5 and 1/2 years clean now. You dont need alcohol, and can learn to have fun with out it. But it does take some time, and for me, depending on the Lord.

My sobriety date is December 1st 2010, which is also my daughters birthday. Alcohol almost destroyed me and my family! I knew I couldn’t get sober on my own so I started going to AA meetings. In the beginning I quit drinking for my children because as a single father I had to be present for them. Then I realized I had to stay sober for myself as well! Alcohol and drugs destroy lives and families. Once one loses control over alcohol and drugs, nothing good will ever happen in their lives going forward. Just my 2 cents.

I’m coming up on 12 years sober. Best thing I ever did… also the hardest. I have friends who drink and so does my wife, but I know I can’t because it will take me down a path I can’t control. I have a better life now than I ever did when I drank… and no amount of fitting in, is worth throwing away the life I’ve built for myself.

I’m trying to get myself straight too. I’m not a daily drinker. But, it’s when I drink I just drink too much. I say things I shouldn’t say. I hate it honestly. My entire social life revolves around food and drink. It’s crazy.

Respect. I was an alcoholic for years and then eventually, I got into heroin. I had an 11-year battle with it and then when fentanyl started hitting the streets, I graduated to that. Even heroin wouldn't relieve the fentanyl withdrawals. I was clean several times, mostly forced sobriety from prison stints. Anytime I got out and stayed clean from opioids, I drank. Heavily. REALLY heavily, thinking I was fine. Eventually, I would relapse on heroin/fentanyl again. It was a vicious cycle. I was homeless, living on the streets, for 2 1/2 years.
I got clean from alcohol in July '21 and haven't had a drop since. Got clean from the opioids in November '21 and was clean a lil over a year, then relapsed December of last year, went to rehab, relapsed again in February of this year, went to rehab again, and have been clean again since. I hit 6 months clean again August 22nd. My life has been better again. In fact, I just got hired on as a mental health tech at a local hospital. Never would've thought that'd happen when I was banging 2-3 grams of fentanyl a day.
Really proud of you, Aaron! Keep it up!

I quit booze 4 years ago this nov 31st. It was a weakness and was developing into a problem after 25 years. I did it because my son was 2 and my daughter 1 and made a promise to my late Mum. I was determined to be a role model for my children. On Dec 1st I decided that was it. My Mum passed from a stroke the next year which made me even more determined to be a t total. I will never touch another drop. I too lost friends but I had nothing much in common with them but boozing. Stay stoic.

I know. I have been sober for 32 years, since I was 37. I never went to meetings because of work schedule, but I can tell you 12 steps work.I overhauled myself spiritually , emotionally and physically, took me three years to to do this but had to be sober to do it. I know there is a lot more for you to learn ,hope to God you will . But most important , you realized you have a problem. Wish you the best on this hard journey.

I used drugs (class A and B) in the same way. It is difficult when you constantly replace one addiction with another. Dealing with the underlying issues is the big deal.
Alpha, you have been the father I never had. This is not some soppy thing, just that I didn't have a reliable man to respect growing up. Finding you when I separated from my ex wife and started my therapy was perfect timing. Today you have my love for this strong moment. Explaining your weaknesses and your journey is the strongest thing a man can do. Thank you for this video, above all the others!

Alpha, I gotta say I really respect you for sharing this part of your story. Honestly, I struggle with my smoking green stuff -- I've really grown tired of the "smog in the noggin" feeling, but when I stop for a day everything starts to feel loud. Your story is proof that overcoming addiction is like flying an airplane; it's not just about getting airborne, it's about maintaining altitude and anticipating obstacles in your flight path. Thank you so much for being an honest role model.
